Some stuff to write in to get the ball rolling;
  • Ridiculous bulk makes it one of the best Articuno checks in the tier
    • This lets it serve as a nice mon to PP stall Wrap with, which by extension makes it among the better Rest user.
    • Gets a good amount of free turns due to said bulk which lets it fish for paraslam.
    • Only 5HKOed by Seismic Toss, making for a good mon to stomach the hits, lots of people forget this!
    • Vaporeon's defense is above average(100934 Defensiveness, ~90417 average). However, it isn't perfect; Persian and Kangaskhan tend to deal large chunks to it, this should be emphasized.
      • Kangaskhan Hyper Beam vs. Vaporeon: 217-255 (46.8 - 55%) -- 71.4% chance to 2HKO
      • Persian Slash vs. Vaporeon on a critical hit: 161-190 (34.7 - 41%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
    • Vaporeon makes a good Pokemon to use as a para sack since it can rest it off with impunity and isn't incapacitated by it in the interim.
      • Thus, Vap works as a good status blocker until you decide to rest it off.
  • Offensively, while pretty damn strong, it gets shut down by Omastar and Dewgong. Tentacruel resists Surf and Blizzard, but Body Slam paralysis is spooky as it guarantees it'll Rest sooner or later. This could go in checks and counters.
    • It's naturally checked by Electabuzz I guess?
  • Speed tier is as awkward as an anime fan at a bar, it's 2 points slower than Hypno but faster than like, Clefable. Makes the Hypno matchup difficult sometimes.
  • If you don't have a fast mon left or everything is paralyzed (read: you don't use Vaporeon for its purpose), it has a lot of trouble fighting back against Wrap.
Some other options in addition to Hydro Pump;
  • Note what Hydro Pump does over Surf: what calcs does it change to be worth the accuracy and PP drop?
  • Quick Attack is kinda interesting for guaranteeing hits on Wrappers, especially Dragonite, which lacks recovery on most sets.
  • Acid Armor for the normals, difficult to set up in Tentacruel's world but it has a potentially high payoff.
    • Kangaskhan Hyper Beam vs. +2 Vaporeon: 108-127 (23.3 - 27.4%) -- 71.2% chance to 4HKO
    • Note that Persian's Slash ignores the boost, and this is a big reason why you wouldn't consider it.
  • I'd say note that either Body Slam or Blizzard should be replace for either of these.
