VGC 21 Venusaur

[OVERVIEW]

Venusaur is an excellent Grass-type attacker when paired with sun setters such as Groudon and Torkoal. With a Chlorophyll boost, it can outspeed some of the metagame's fastest threats like Regieleki, Zacian-C, Calyrex-S. Venusaur has an incredible offensive and supportive presence, as it can either wear down foes over the course of a game with G-Max Vine Lash and immobilize threats with a fast Sleep Powder. It also has access to both Max Quake and Max Ooze to boost its Special Defense and Special Attack in addition to its already great natural bulk. It's this wide array of options that can make Venusaur very hard to predict against. However, Venusaur is far less effective if sun is not active, meaning it can struggle against Pokemon with ways to change the weather like Rain Dance Tornadus or any Pokemon with access to Max Rockfall or Max Hailstorm. Additionally, Sleep Powder's poor accuracy means that misses will occur somewhat often, putting Venusaur on the backfoot quickly. Its Grass typing also makes it a prime target for common Max Airstream users such as Thundurus and Galarian Moltres.

[SET]
name: Chlorophyll
move 1: Leaf Storm / Frenzy Plant
move 2: Earth Power / Sludge Bomb
move 3: Weather Ball / Sludge Bomb
move 4: Sleep Powder / Protect
item: Focus Sash / Life Orb
ability: Chlorophyll
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
in-battle alt: Gmax

[SET COMMENTS]

* Leaf Storm is used to give Venusaur both a powerful G-Max Vine Lash and a strong STAB move to use while outside of Dynamax. Having a Grass-type move is essential for hitting the likes of Groudon and Kyogre. Frenzy Plant can be used for a stronger G-Max Vine Lash at the cost of a less reliable STAB attack while not Dynamaxed.

* Earth Power allows Venusaur to hit Incineroar and Steel-types such as Zacian-C and Solgaleo while boosting its Special Defense with Max Quake, while Sludge Bomb can hit Grimmsnarl and boost its Special Attack with Max Ooze.

* Weather Ball is an excellent option for hitting both Steel-types and opposing Grass-types such as Kartana and Rillaboom. Unfortunately, its reliance on sun means it cannot always be used successfully.

* Sleep Powder is a way for Venusaur to immobilize major threats such as Zacian-C and Regieleki while its partner goes on the offensive.

* Focus Sash is typically used alongside Sleep Powder to give Venusaur increased security in the event that it misses. Life Orb is more commonly used on three attacks + Protect sets that are looking to increase damage output and use Venusaur in Dynamax as often as possible.

Weakness Policy is an option to capitalize on Venusaur's numerous weaknesses, but there is no guarantee that it will be activated over the course of a game. Coba Berry can be used as a fringe option to provide insurance against Max Airstream users like Zapdos and Yveltal if Focus Sash has already been taken on its team. Similarly, Assault Vest is helpful for allowing Venusaur to consistently survive Max Airstream while walling other special attackers like Kyogre and Regieleki.

Venusuar's access to G-Max Vinelash and Sleep Powder make it threatening both offensively and supportively, keeping the opponent on their toes for the duration of the match. It also has access to both Max Quake and Max Ooze to boost its Special Defense and Special Attack in addition to its already great natural bulk. G-Max Vinelash also applies residual damage over time making it easier for Venusaur and its partner to take KOs. Venusuar is far less effective if sun is not active, meaning it can struggle against Pokemon with ways to change the weather like Rain Dance Tornadus or any Pokemon with access to Max Rockfall or Max Hailstorm. Additionally, Sleep Powder's poor accuracy means that misses will occur somewhat often, putting Venusaur on the backfoot quickly. Its grass typing makes it a prime target for common Max Airstream users such as Thundurus and Galarian Moltres.(One thing I've always felt when playing against Venusaur is that it forces so many mind games so maybe try to work that into the analysis if it works.)

(Sleep Powder is still used on Life Orb Sets often so maybe reword to say that "Protect is used on Life Orb sets that want to focus on damage output")

Frenzy Plant gives Venusaur the strongest possible G-Max Vinelash, but is far less usable than Leaf Storm while not Dynamaxed. Weakness Policy is an option to capitalize on Venusaur's numerous weaknesses, but there is no guarantee that it will be activated over the course of a game. Coba Berry can be used as a fringe option to provide insurance against Max Airstream users like Zapdos or Yveltal if Focus Sash has already been taken on its team.

* Leaf Storm is used to give Venusaur both a powerful G-Max Vinelash Vine Lash and a strong STAB move to use while outside of Dynamax. Having a Grass-type move is essential for hitting the likes of Groudon and Kyogre. (As I added in the set, I think Frenzy Plant is worth a mention just because of the raw power - see the points made about Dialga Draco vs Roar and Charizard Blast Burn vs Heat Wave)

* Sleep Powder is a way for Venusaur to immobilize major threats such as Calyrex-S or Kyogre (Venu can probably just be a nuisance to it with Vine Lash, so I'd just consider this but it's probably still fine. That and we've made the mention that Grass move is beating Kyogre) while its partner goes on the offensive.

* Focus Sash is typically used alongside Sleep Powder to give Venusaur increased security in the event that it misses. Life Orb is more commonly used on three attacks + Protect sets that are looking to increase damage output and use Venusaur in Dynamax as often as possible.

Frenzy Plant gives Venusaur the strongest possible G-Max Vinelash Vine Lash, but is far less usable than Leaf Storm while not Dynamaxed. (I would be tempted to give this a main set mention as we do for similar situations in other sets). (I know it's not the most common, but I know a bunch of us have taken more of a liking to Assault Vest Venusaur recently, so up to you if you would like to include this)
