Alakazam @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 52 HP / 172 Def / 36 SpA / 4 SpD / 244 Spe OR 252 SpA / 4 Spd / 252 Spe

Zam's ridiculous speed tier + a Traced Swift Swim allows it to outspeed... well, basically anything in the rain, including swampert. Energy ball is quite mandatory to OHKO, otherwise this happens:
252 SpA Mega Alakazam Psychic vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Swampert in Psychic Terrain: 135-159 (76.7 - 90.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 52 Def / 204 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Leech Seed
- Stealth Rock/Protect

Ferrothorn absolutely MISHES on Mega Swampert, taking like nothing from most of its moves bar Superpower, which it still lives, while obliterating it with a 4x super effective Power Whip.

252+ Atk Mega Swampert Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 52 Def Ferrothorn in Rain: 48-57 (26.5 - 31.4%) -- 16.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Mega Swampert Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 52 Def Ferrothorn: 79-94 (43.6 - 51.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Mega Swampert Superpower vs. 252 HP / 52 Def Ferrothorn: 128-152 (70.7 - 83.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Swampert: 240-288 (136.3 - 163.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

The other moves are fairly standard. Gyro Ball is one of Ferrothorn's most spammable STAB moves, Leech Seed heals Ferro even further while chipping down more defensive switchins, while either Stealth Rock or Protect can be run in the last slot, with Protect being nice for chipping with Leech Seed or stalling rain turns if you already have a Stealth Rock setter. EV-wise, Ferrothorn has enough HP and SpD to 1v1 Sash Lead Pelipper, 3HKOing with Power Whip while being 4HKOed by Hurricane, with everything else dumped into Defense.

252+ SpA Pelipper Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 204+ SpD Ferrothorn: 57-67 (31.4 - 37%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Pelipper: 64-76 (38.3 - 45.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Not only does Washtom resist or take no damage from Mega Swampert's STABs due to its typing and Levitate and OHKO with a rain-boosted Hydro Vortex, but you also resist the STABs of its main partner, Pelipper, and OHKO with your Electric-type STAB! Even if the opponent has brought a Ferrothorn, Washtom can simply Volt Switch out into another partner, keeping momentum.

252+ SpA Rotom-Wash Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Swampert-Mega in Rain: 207-244 (118.2 - 139.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Golisopod @ Life Orb

Adamant Nature

Step 1. be bulky
Step 2. resist everything
Step 3. nice priority
Step 4. rain-boosted nukes

Golisopod is amazing. I really enjoy this thing for dealing with a whole bunch of scary Ground-type threats by virtue of its Bug typing and Skarmory-level bulk, but it has a special niche for dealing with Swampert. It resists all of Waterfall, Earthquake, Ice Punch and Superpower thanks to being Water/Bug, and is never OHKOed by the uncommon Stone Edge (well, if it crits then there's a slim chance), making it a watertight option in a 1v1 scenario. Unfortunately, Stone Edge will always put Golisopod into Emergency Exit range, but First Impression is a guaranteed 2HKO so if for whatever reason you can't scout for the Rock move, then just click First Impression, pivot out to your Rock resist, bring Golisopod back in on the Earthquake or whatever and pick it off. If you're confident it's carrying Superpower then Liquidation into Aqua Jet will always kill. This set is my favourite - Life Orb with 60 Spe to outspeed min speed Hippowdon. The "standard" is Choice Band with max HP so use that if you like but I really dislike move locking on a mon with quasi-Fake Out and an exploitable priority move - more or less the same reason I've never felt moved to use Specs Aegislash. I find that Life Orb is very useful as an alternative with your priority moves for deliberately activating Emergency Exit, adding greater depth to Golisopod's playstyle, especially with Leech Life. Love this mon best mon use it.

252+ Atk Mega Swampert Waterfall vs. 196 HP / 0 Def Golisopod in Rain: 47-56 (26.8 - 32%)
252+ Atk Mega Swampert Stone Edge vs. 196 HP / 0 Def Golisopod: 106-126 (60.5 - 72%)
252+ Atk Mega Swampert Stone Edge vs. 196 HP / 0 Def Golisopod on a critical hit: 158-188 (90.2 - 107.4%) OHKOs after a Life Orb hit so watch out - do your scouting chaps

Victim of the Week 56 - Zapdos

zapdos.gif

Up next we have the Electric Pokemon, Zapdos! Zapdos' Electric/Flying typing combined with its 90/85/90 defensive stats make it a good check to some of Battle Spot's premier threats, such as Mega Salamence, Landorus-T, Celesteela, Kartana and Breloom. However, it's weak to Stealth Rocks and doesn't take well strong unresisted hits. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!

Thanks to lightning rod, Marowak hard walls every Zapdos set. Perish Song is used to beat Toxic in a 1v1 scenario. The EV spread comes from VGC

Hippowdon @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Yawn
- Slack Off
- Ice Fang / Rock Tomb

Hippowdon's McDonald's addiction grants it the thickness it needs to take anything from Zapdos bar Toxic.

4 SpA Zapdos Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Hippowdon: 50-60 (23.2 - 27.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery
252+ SpA Zapdos Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Hippowdon: 66-78 (30.6 - 36.2%) -- 99.5% chance to 4HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery

Yawn gives Hippowdon an excellent way of threatening out Zapdos, potentially putting it to sleep, giving the Hippo time to heal with Slack Off or chip with Ice Fang. Ice Fang and Earthquake give Hippowdon ways of threatening two of Zapdos's most popular partners, Landorus-T and Mega Blaziken respectively. Rock Tomb can still be used to reduce opposing Pokémon's Speed if desired while still doing some damage to Zapdos without making contact, ignoring Rocky Helmet damage.

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
Level: 50
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Def / 12 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Infestation
- Toxic
- Recover
- Scald

Big Slug cares about exactly zero of Zapdos' attacks (outside of Toxic) and this set ensures that Toxic-spewing Zapdos go down with you! Infestation traps all Zapdos without U-turn and enables you to get a Toxic off on static birb followed by Scalds to weaken it. Even if Zapdos escapes the slug's Infestation, it will be too weakened to effectively check sweepers like Mega Mence!

For non-Toxic Zapdos, Gastrodon forces them to switch every time and enables you to trap your opponent's next Pokémon, guaranteeing that you get switch initiative on the next turn/allowing you to Toxic another fat mon.

Pointless Calcs:
252+ SpA Zapdos Hidden Power Ice vs. 244 HP / 12 SpD Gastrodon: 43-51 (19.8 - 23.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery

After seeing noms such as Gastrodon and Alolan Marowak, I was inspired to submit something a bit unconventional myself...

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

IVs: 0 Atk

Xurkitree resists Zapdos' Electric STAB, and can take two Heat Waves. You can then proceed to use it as setup bait. Shuca Berry and Air Balloon are two other item options to surprise Ground-types such as Landorus-T and Hippowdon. A bulkier spread can also be used as well, given Xurkitree's titanic Special Attack stat, not to mention Tail Glow.

0 SpA Zapdos Heat Wave vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Xurkitree: 57-68 (35.8 - 42.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

I wanted to nom Tyranitar but it is just bait for Zapdos to catch it with Volt Switch on the switch and go to its buttbuddy Blaziken, so here is this instead:

Swampert @ Lum Berry (best item for Zapdos matchup) / Leftovers / Sitrus Berry / Rindo Berry (with Mirror Coat)

Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock
- Scald
- Ice Beam / Rest / Yawn / Roar / Mirror Coat (With Rindo Berry)

Swampert completely walls Zapdos and switches into it for free. It is also an excellent Stealth Rocker, allowing it to provide great support to your team! Switch in on Zapdos, set up Stealth Rock to cripple it, Toxic it to cripple it even more. Lum Berry is the preferred anti-Zapdos item as it cures poison upon switch in and can also be used with Rest if you are truly worried about Zapdos. Sitrus is nice for general recovery if you are less worried about Zapdos. Lefties can be used to combo with Yawn. EVs allow you to live a Grass Knot from LO Koko from full health 100% of the time. Rindo Berry can be used with Mirror Coat to lure Charizard Y if you want, in which case you should modify the EV spread to your liking as Koko's Grass Knot will be a nonissue.

thicc boi does not care about anything Zapdos can do to it, outside of maybe a Heat Wave burn. Icicle Spear shreds Zapdos pretty efficiently, and fast variants can't Roost on Mamo thanks to Earthquake. Not much to say here, this is one of the definitive offensive counters to Zapdos.

Might as well copy the set I posted in Lure That Threat, since it works on a lot of flying types / floating mons besides Celesteela. It is worth noting that HP Ice is a clean OHKO on this set from offensive zapdos, so the yache berry is quite helpful here. Note that adamant lando does like 90% max to full physdef sets without a boosting item, so smack down chip is vital in those situations.
