last generation's project of the same name

Every generation is different and the metagame is constantly evolving. However, there has always been and always will be threats - Whether they are defensive threats or offensive threats, every competent player should have a way to handle any threat - whether they are top-tier or are a niche pick. That's where you guys come in! This project aims to gather some of the common top-tier threats in the metagame and find Pokémon that can either check or counter them.

How does it work?

Each week, I will nominate a Pokemon for discussion. Within a week, your job is to discuss and submit various pokemon that you think can either check or counter the victim of the week. At the end of each week (Saturday), the submissions stage will end and the voting stage will begin.

Rules!

  • You must follow the definitions of checks and counters, as stated in this article.
  • You may only submit one submission per week, unless given permission by myself but please mention that you have been given permission!
  • You can only vote for one submission for each category and you cannot vote for your own submission.
  • Please give an explanation as to why your submission is a relevant check or counter. It doesn't need to be long, but a paragraph (or a minimum of 3 sentences) will be sufficient.
  • You may reserve a Pokemon to nominate, however, please write up your post within 24 hours of the reservation.
  • In saying that, you may take or reserve a set of a post if the reservation has not been altered for over 24 hours.
  • Different sets of the same Pokemon can be nominated. For example, one person can nominate Flyinium-Z Landorus-T as a check to something, while another person can nominate Rocky Helmet Landorus-T as a counter to the same thing in the same week. Just make sure it's a completely different set and not just a single different move.
  • You may help and discuss with people to improve their submission, but please be nice and civil.
  • *New rule!* Please do not use Shedinja as an submission!
  • Finally, please do not post one-liners, unless voting. Try to avoid double-posting if possible.

Reuniclus @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast / Energy Ball
- Recover
A dangerous but still underrated threat, Reuniclus makes for a dangerous setup sweeper with its access to moves like Calm Mind, Acid Armor, and Recover. Its pure Psychic typing allows it to set up on Pokemon like Mega Medicham, and Magic Guard allows it to set up against defensive Pokemon like Ferrothorn. Psyshock helps Reuniclus against opposing Calm Mind users like Magearna. Focus Blast aims to cover the Dark-types that would otherwise wall Reuniclus, while Energy Ball is able to target Ash-Greninja and Tyranitar, both targets of Focus Blast, while allowing Reuniclus to beat stall teams with Water-type Unaware users like Pyukumuku and Quagsire, and that with Mega Sableye.
Can you come up with something to beat this? Submissions end on 18/5 (Saturday)!

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 28 Def / 232 SpD
IVs: 6 Spe
Calm Nature
- Heart Swap
- Pain Split
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon

Heart Swap Magearna is a Counter because it is either resistant or neutral to Reuniclus' STABs and or coverage, can disregard any boosts by stealing them with Heart Swap, as well as heal itself with Pain Split, giving it a level of consistency. And when you're done walling it, you can Volt Switch out on it to gain momentum.

Also, quick note to xapx, when listing the subject in a post, centering it would be a good idea to make sure it doesn't look like a submission. Just an idea, you don't have to listen to me or anything.

Anyway reserving Eugene H. Krabs aka Crawdaunt

Crawdaunt @ Choice Band
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Crabhammer
- Aqua Jet
- Crunch

Crawdaunt is probably the hardest offensive counter the tier offers to all Reuni in general. The only way Reuni can get rid of Daunt is hitting Energy Ball/Focus Blast on the switch. Otherwise, Reuni is KOed by Knock or Crunch, or 2hkoed at +2 by the same moves if it AAs on the switch.

Scizor @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Def / 244 SpD
Impish Nature
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Roost
- Knock Off

Mega Scizor is a good counter to Reuniclus. Reuniclus practically can't do anything to Mega Scizor, as it takes nothing from Psyshock and can rack up boosts quicker with Swords Dance than Reuniclus can with Calm Mind, meaning that Focus Blast won't matter much either.

Hoopa-Unbound @ Choice Band
Ability: Magician
EVs: 32 HP / 224 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Hyperspace Fury
- Gunk Shot
- Fire Punch
- Drain Punch

Thanks to its Dark typing and sheer power, Hoopa-U easily threatens Reuniclus. Additionally, Hoopa-U's great special bulk lets it switch directly on Reuniclus several times throughout the battle. All these factors make Hoopa-U decent check to Reuniclus.

reserving mega mawile

10303-Shiny-Mega-Mawile.png

Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch
- Knock Off

Mega Mawile is a great wallbreaker in the OU tier and does this job of beating Reuniclus well too, Mega Mawile tanks anything Reuniclus
can go for and pressures it with a strong Knock Off due to its good Attack stat and its amazing ability.
It can set an Swords Dance on Reuniclus and can OHKO it with Knock Off, even an unboosted Knock Off has a chance to OHKO Reuniclus with ma max roll dmg.
Mega Mawile has to be careful about a +1 Focus Blast as it does a decent chunk to Mega Mawile, however Reuniclus has to be wary about a Sucker Punch coming from Mega Mawile
and Mega Mawile can use it for some mind games with some good prediction. It can easily pressure Reuniclus and can overwhelm it really quickly so0 Mega Mawile serves a as a great offensive check.

Calcs:
0 SpA Reuniclus Psyshock vs. 92 HP / 0 Def Mawile-Mega: 43-51 (16.2 - 19.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock

reserving tyranitar

Tyranitar @ Choice Band
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Atk / 48 SpD / 168 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Pursuit
- Superpower

Choice Band Tyranitar is a checker for Reuniclus, as it can enter the field through a double switch or in the Psyshock and easily kill with Crunch or trap with pursuit. However should be careful to enter in a Focus Blast, since guarantees the KO with rocks in the field (76% to 90%).

sorry if there is any spelling error, English is not my native language.

Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Def
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Protect

Or whichever set you want to run, honestly; MSab's Dark/Ghost typing counters Reun's Psychic/Fighting coverage no matter what. Reun's best bet is to either run Energy Ball or have a teammate set up Toxic Spikes, but even then, 1. Reun needs to be at +4 to 2HKO and 2. TSpikes are more likely to backfire than be successful with Mr Magic Bounce waiting in the wings.

Gengar sprite from Black 2 & White 2 & Black & White

Gengar @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Taunt / Will-O-Wisp
- Focus Blast

Gengar is a check to Reuniclus because if it is given a free switch into a +1 Reuniclus, it can kill it through the SpDef boost with a Never Ending Nightmare (it needs like 4% chip to be guaranteed, but a Volt Switch or U-Turn will do just fine). Additionally, Gengar has tools to annoy common Reuniclus partners like Toxapex, Tyranitar and Bulu with Taunt, Focus Blast/Wisp and Sludge Wave respectively.

Reserving the most unviable odd check of the bunch, Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers / Chople Berry
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 24 Def / 232 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Spikes / Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Worry Seed
- Power Whip
This set looks like it came out fresh from Crazyland, but let me explain. This is designed as a lure that can also do what is normally does, spread annoying status, set up hazards, and also trick Reuniclus. The idea is to toxic it early, either through a teammate or by yourself before switching out to force it out , then when it comes in to set up later on, you can switch this in, power whip a few times to pressure it to recover while it sets up on you, before Worry Seeding it to remove Magic Guard and having toxic pretty much ravage them. Another option is to immediately Worry Seed it, but it may just switch out immediately as well, losing the ‘oompt’ factor.

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Careful Nature
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 248 HP / 188 SpD / 72 Spe
- Wish
- Protect / Stealth Rocks
- Iron Head
- U-turn / Body Slam

All of the Jirachi sets completely wall Reuniclus without Shadow Ball, and can flinch it to death with Iron Head.

Wish Jirachi in particular takes advantage of 2 attacks Reuniclus to (1) heal a teammate, (2) set up Stealth Rocks, or (3) paralyze a switch-in with Body Slam.

0 Atk Jirachi Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 212+ Def Reuniclus: 78-93 (18.3 - 21.9%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 0 SpA Reuniclus Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 188+ SpD Jirachi: 158-187 (39.2 - 46.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+6 0 SpA Reuniclus Psyshock vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Jirachi: 103-122 (25.5 - 30.2%) -- 0.9% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Hydreigon @ Darkinium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 244 SpA / 32 SpD / 232 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Roost

Hydreigon can switch into even +1 Reuniclus and drop its Z to do a shitton of damage to Reuniclus, having a shot to OHKO it at +1, and it obviously beats it 1v1 on pivots and such. Obviously it has to be wary of Focus Blast, but many of the best answers have been taken already besides stall shit like Pyukumuku.

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Protect
- Moonblast
- Calm Mind

Thanks to unaware, Clefable avoids the 2HKO from Reuniclus' attacks, no matter how many boosts it has accumulated. Unaware also allows Clefable to not only wall Reuniclus, but break it as well; many people forget, but unaware ignores the opponent's stat boosts when the user attacks, so moonblast always does a decent amount of damage. Calm mind allows you to boost to the point where you 2HKO Reuniclus. Wish, protect, and leftovers prevent Reuniclus from beating you down before you get set up. Clefable is a counter, because bar hax and poor play, Clefable should always beat Reuniclus.

Kommo-o @ Kommonium Z
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Clanging Scales
- Close Combat
- Poison Jab

A recently discovered Stealth Rock user, Kommo-o is able to pressure common Defoggers like Tornadus-T and Zapdos once it has set up, and is great at blanket checking some of the tier's top-tier threats in Heatran and Ash-Greninja.

On a side note, I have shortened the period for both Submission and Voting to 5 days as most activities die out after the first few days.
Therefore, the deadline for the submission is 31 May. Happy posting!

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald / Knock Off
- Haze
- Recover
- Toxic / Toxic Spikes

Toxapex is one of the most solid counters to Z-Move Kommo-o because it can eat Clangorous Soulblaze followed by booste Clanging Scales (depends on the spread, however) and Haze off the omniboost.
