Metagames are dynamic, ever-changing, and constantly subject to change. However, there are always key Pokemon which must be prepared for and acknowledged during team building. This project is a great way for the community to come together and find ways to tackle these threats and develop a greater understanding of the tier as a whole.

  • Every round, I'll pick one Pokemon from the "NeverUsed Viability Rankings" to be discussed. The submission stage will last one week.
  • During the round, post a Pokemon of your choosing which is able to check / counter the current threat, with a Set, Description, and Calculations if necessary. (Note that they MUST be viable, no gimmicks like Trapinch or Whiscash, in some cases I'll be a bit more flexible with what's allowed).
  • At the end of the week we start over, until we have an entire compendium of checks and counters for each Pokemon on the VR.
At the end of the round, results will be archived, so that eventually we'll have a bank of checks and counters for each threat in the tier with descriptions and sets to match.

Rules:
1. When nominating your check/counter please take into consideration this defintion from The Smog:

Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

There are some parts of those definitions that may be confusing to the unfamiliar, so now I'm going to make sure we're all on the same page. "Hax" does not mean cheats or codes used to win. "Hax" means, loosely, things that have a chance of happening but usually don't, for example, critical hits (under most circumstances), Ice Beam freezing, and Fire Blast missing. This means that we don't take into account these types of things when we analyze if one Pokémon checks or counters another. Despite this, it's unwise to declare that one Pokémon checks another when the victorious Pokémon relies on hitting Focus Blast three times in a row, or something like that. Basically, you're often okay ignoring hax unless something that doesn't have a high chance of happening must happen in order for a Pokémon to check or counter another.

There are some things, like flinching, which you would normally consider to be hax but aren't always so. For example, Jirachi has a 60% chance to flinch a slower opponent with Iron Head, so in this case, flinching is not hax because it happens over half the time. For things such as missing or secondary effects, such as a Scald burn or Special Defense drop from Seed Flare, that have a decently high chance of happening, you need to think about them when you analyze checks or counters. Even though they might fit the standard definition of hax, they happen often enough for you to expect to see them in real situations somewhat commonly. There's no official or best guideline, but in my opinion, if some form of "hax" has a 30% chance or higher of happening, you should keep it in the back of your mind because it's not a negligible occurrence.
2. You may NOT post Shedninja
3. Only post sets and Pokemon viable in NU. Try to stick to Pokemon on the Viability Rankings, however exceptions can be made on rare occasions.
4. Reservations are allowed, however if you don't complete your post within 24 hours someone else is free to take your Pokemon.
5. If someone posts an unviable set / mon, you can help them out, but be nice.
6. Post calcs if necessary.

Alcremie can easily switch into Cofagrigus as it takes little damage from Shadow Ball and resists Body Press and can recover off, benig able to beat Cofag by setting Calm Mind up, even at +6 Cofagrigus still barely 2HKOes Alcremie, while Alcremie can 2HKO Cofagrigus at +2 with Dazzling Gleam. As a bonus, since Alcremie is slow, it gets more dangerous if Trick Room is still active after Cofagrigus faints.

Clefairy functions as a counter to Cofagrigus. It can switch into the aforementioned pokemon pretty much for free taking less then 30% from Shadow Ball and less then 20% from a neutral Body Press, not to mention that thanks to its ability in Magic Guard it ignores any possible hazard damage. At +6 Body Press barely has a 19% to 2HKO while and easy to pp stall thanks to Softboiled+Wish. Moonblast also does a solid 20% chip so you always win the 1v1.

Depending on whether Stealth Rocks / Spikes / Toxic Spikes are up or not, Cursola can be a check or a counter to Cofagrigus. I'll only cover the calcs without hazards on the field when you switch in. Without hazard-damage you'll never be 2HKOed by Shadow Ball from Cofagrigus (SpD-drops and crits not included!). In return, you OHKO Cofagrigus 100% of the time with Choice Specs - Shadow Ball. As an extra, Cursola and Cofagrigus speedtie so you actually have the chance to kill it first, even under Trick Room.

:Garbodor: is a very strong check as it can whittle down Cofagrigus with inflicted damage due to a 100% hitable Toxic. Toxic wears down Cofagrigus pretty fast and Garbodor has a good typing to resists Body Presses coming from Cofagrigus and even a +2 Body Press won#t do too much to Garbodor.
As explained above Garbodor is a strong answer to this Cofagrigus-Set and it can eat up any hit pretty well but in return can Toxic Cofagrigus. It can also set T-Spikes on the field to whittle down Cofagrigus later in the game and also hits Cofagrigus' teammates.

RestTalk dubwool is a very interesting counter to this Cofagrigus set. It is able to boost its defense alongside Cofagrigus, while only tanking 21-25% from Body Press when neutral / both are maxed out. More so, because of Colbur Berry and not Leftovers, Cofagrigus will chip itself down thanks to Rocky Helmet. If it decides to stay in, then Cofagrigus will be PP stalled thanks to Rest turns, and likely will KO itself from the contact damage. It's not exactly the most threatening counter in return, but Dubwool no doubt has the edge needed to force Cofagrigus out while still being a cool switch in thanks to taking nothing from its attacks.

Scarf Arctovish is a check to Sandaconda. If you think that Sanda will go for Stealth Rocks then you can safely switch into Arcto. Since this Arcto has Scarf, it won't suffer for being slower and therefore it can use Fishious Rend twice while living a Body Press, Stone Edge, or Earthquake (calcs below). Rotom-Frost is a check because you cannot switch into multiple stone edges over time from sandaconda. Rotom-Frost can easily defog away the rocks that get thrown up and immediately threatens with a powerful supereffective blizzard. You could even run pain split to have slightly better longevity vs Sandaconda as well, even if you are still threatened by edge.

Eldegoss is a strong counter to Sandaconda. It can easily switch into any of Sandaconda's moves for several turns, remove the Stealth Rocks Sandaconda tries to get up with Rapid Spin and recover the damage with either Giga Drain or via switching + Regenerator. Heavy-Duty Boots allow Eldegoss to switch into Sandaconda's attacks more frequently, ignoring possible annoying hazards like Toxic Spikes. Malamar @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Psycho Cut
- Throat Chop
- Superpower

:malamar: is a check to indeedee-f as it can come in on its psychic stabs unharmed and can easily abuse indeedee-f as set-up fodder with superpower. it can also come in on mystical fire as it doesnt mind the secondary effect mystical fire has.
however it should be careful with switching into indeedee's hyper voice, but in general malamar poses a really good check to indeedee.

calcs:
252 Atk Malamar Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Indeedee-F: 147-173 (52.3 - 61.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Malamar Psycho Cut vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Indeedee-F in Psychic Terrain: 96-114 (34.1 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Malamar Throat Chop vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Indeedee-F: 294-348 (104.6 - 123.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Malamar Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Indeedee-F: 356-420 (126.6 - 149.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Indeedee-F Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Malamar: 225-265 (71.8 - 84.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Indeedee-F Mystical Fire vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Malamar: 124-147 (39.6 - 46.9%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Sawk @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Knock Off

Check. Obviously it cannot come in on anything since it dies to everything Indeedee-F throws at it (STABs and all) except for Mystical Fire. But should Sawk be brought in safely from a Parting Shot or smth, it can OHKO with Knock Off:

252 Atk Sawk Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Indeedee-F: 294-346 (104.6 - 123.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

submitting Musharna as a counter.

:musharna:
Musharna @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 184 HP / 200 Def / 104 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Moonlight
- Psychic
- Moonblast

This spread ensures that CM Musharna is never 2HKOed by Indeedee-F's Hyper Voice after Stealth Rocks. That means that it can switch in, heal a few times if it clicked Hyper Voice, and Calm Mind up on it for free.

The spread is kind of weird - i was going to go 252 HP / 68 SpD to ensure that it always avoids the 2HKO by Hyper Voice after SR, but 184 HP / 104 SpD does the same thing while saving 32 evs (yay efficiency) due to Musharna's high HP stat.

Musharna is not currently on the Viability Rankings, but this CM set can also put in work versus teams that don't have a dark type, which is fairly common. It can still be effective vs teams with Dark-types by moonblasting them on the switch.

If you want to be less worried about status, you can run RestTalk + CM + Moonblast / Psychic / Stored Power. However, this makes it a much less reliable answer to CM Indeedee, since you don't have reliable recovery, you struggle to switch into Hyper Voice.

252 SpA Choice Specs Indeedee-F Hyper Voice vs. 184 HP / 104 SpD Musharna: 166-196 (39.6 - 46.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Indeedee-F Hyper Voice vs. +1 184 HP / 104 SpD Musharna: 111-132 (26.4 - 31.5%) -- 18.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Musharna Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Indeedee-F: 69-82 (24.5 - 29.1%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO

Stunfisk-Galar @ Leftovers
Ability: Mimicry
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Yawn
- Protect/Snap Trap/Stone Edge

Stunfisk-Galar is probably one of the best countrers Indeedee-f has in NU. Thanks to mimicry its not weak to any move indeedee can go for (unless you face the rare shadow ball) while also resisting its STAB psychic moves. Hyper Voice can sting a bit but with protect and a normal resist its easy to play around. It can force it out with Yawn or 3HKO it with Earthquake.

252 SpA Choice Specs Indeedee-F Hyper Voice vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Stunfisk-Galar: 144-169 (34.1 - 40%) -- 32.8% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Indeedee-F Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Stunfisk-Galar in Psychic Terrain: 46-55 (10.9 - 13%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 SpA Choice Specs Indeedee-F Mystical Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Stunfisk-Galar: 80-95 (18.9 - 22.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Stunfisk-Galar Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Indeedee-F: 86-102 (30.6 - 36.2%) -- 50.6% chance to 3HKO
