Project Victim of the Week

Week 99: Thanks for all the votes, especially Albacore for breaking the tie.

The results are:

Checks: SD Salac Endure Garchomp (NotFalse) | ScarfChomp (llSECRETSWORDll) | Talonflame (jordanthejq12)
Counters: Heatran (Skarmx2) | Mega Slowbro (-Magic-) | TankChomp (Sobi)

Week 100:

First, a quick shoutout to great contributors to this thread with 7+ entries in the archive

Thanks so much for your contributions, which have allowed this thread to go as well and on for as long as it has (100 WEEKS!). Thanks also to the many newer contributors who are well on their way to getting added to the Hall of Fame!

Now for what Pokemon to pick, I knew I wanted one that reminds me of post-Aegi X&Y, which was my favorite meta to play. Garde, Cham, Pinsir, and Terrakion are all good choices (and you may see them in upcoming weeks), but I decided to go with the one that was arguably the most scary for stall teams, and whose bulky set is gaining a lot of traction right now. That 'mon of course is... Mega Heracross!

Heracross-Mega @ Heracronite
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 248 HP / 76 Atk / 84 Def / 100 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance / Substitute
- Close Combat
- Pin Missile
- Rock Blast

Anyway, I'm so glad to have been able to run this awesome thread for 100 weeks, and truly it's all thanks to you guys who consistently nominate mons and as of recently vote on them. It's been a great 100 weeks, and here's to many more!

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Moonblast
- Flamethrower
- Wish / Thunder Wave
- Protect / Thunder Wave

so Clefable is a nice counter to Heracross thanks to Unaware, which means all of Heracross's stat boosts from Swords Dance are not taken into account when it attacks Clefable. The set can be tweaked however you wish, but Moonblast is there for STAB, Flamethrower hits it super-effectively, and the last two slots can be used to either cripple it with T-Wave or WishPass to your teammates.

calcs:

0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Mega Heracross: 188-224 (51.7 - 61.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

76+ Atk Mega Heracross Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 160-190 (40.7 - 48.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

mega altaria as a counter

334_Altaria.png

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 168 SpA / 92 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Fire Blast
- Roost
- Earthquake

altaria is basically a counter under the most common scenario, which is both mons mega evolved (i wont go into detail but it can be a shaky answer if hera holds off on mega evolving then sd's as altaria comes in but it's gonna mega evolve as soon as possible for the extra bulk so i think it's fair to count this situation out)

with that said, mega altaria easily switches into mega heracross because it outspeeds and ohkos 100% of the time if heracross has taken damage from entry hazards, it also easily beats substitute variants because hyper voice hits through subs.

76+ Atk
214-m.png
Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def
334-m.png
: 170-200 (48.1 - 56.6%) -- approx. 94.1% chance to 2HKO
168+ SpA Pixilate

Hyper Voice vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD

Gardevoir @ Gardevoirite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 16 HP / 8 Def / 232 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast
- Taunt / Will-O-Wisp / Calm Mind

Status: Check

Mega Gardevoir obviously cannot switch in unless Heracross is setting up either Swords Dance or Substitute. When it does switch in, it can simply outspeed and OHKO Heracross with Hyper Voice, even if Substitute is up.

Metagross @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt
- Hammer Arm
- Grass Knot

Mega Metagross can take any 1 attack from Mega Heracross, outspeeds and OHKOes with Zen Headbutt. If it's a SD variant, it's an even easier win for Mega Metagross.

76+ Atk Mega Heracross Pin Missile (5 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Metagross: 195-230 (64.7 - 76.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Metagross Zen Headbutt vs. 248 HP / 84 Def Mega Heracross: 308-366 (84.8 - 100.8%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Mega Gardevoir can't switch into Mega Heracross but it will always win 1 v 1 because it has a higher Speed and Hyper Voice bypasses Substitute.
Hey there, I kinda did that first, sorry to say that.

Granbull @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Play Rough
- Earthquake
- Thunder Wave
- Fire Punch / Heal Bell

This thing beats Sub variants. They get walled by it and Granbull 2HKOs back with Play Rough.

-1 76+ Atk Mega Heracross Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Granbull: 105-125 (27.4 - 32.6%) -- approx. 66% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
8 Atk Granbull Play Rough vs. 248 HP / 84 Def Mega Heracross: 188-224 (51.7 - 61.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

SD variants beat it, but not before it gets a minimum of 50% onto them.

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 12 Def / 196 SpD / 56 Spe
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Acrobatics
- Swords Dance
- Roost

As luck would have it, Gliscor has just enough power to OHKO this particular set with +2 Acrobatics, and just enough bulk to take a 2 Rock Blasts from it, and can thus switch in and beat it from full health.

76+ Atk Mega Heracross Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 244 HP / 12 Def Gliscor: 145-175 (41.1 - 49.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Poison Heal

transference (Tornadus-Therian) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 96 HP / 160 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hurricane
- Superpower
- U-turn
- Knock Off

Tornadus-T is certainly not the most reliable check in the world, but it resists both of Mega Heracross's STAB attacks and can live a hit from them, even after Stealth Rock damage, and OHKO it return with Hurricane. Tornadus-T can recover any damage lost over time thanks to Regenerator. Rock Blast obviously OHKOs though, as long as it doesn't miss, so be very careful about switching into that. Substitute can also be an issue.
0 SpA Tornadus-T Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Mega Heracross: 496-588 (136.6 - 161.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

76 Atk Mega Heracross Close Combat vs. 96 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-T: 140-165 (43.3 - 51%) -- 4.7% chance to 2HKO

Talonflame
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
Careful Nature
- Acrobatics
- Roost
- Bulk Up / Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp

Talonflame resists both of Heracross' STABs, allowing it to switch in on Pin Missile and survive one unboosted Close Combat if rocks aren't up, then OHKO it with Acrobatics.

However, problems arise if Heracross has already set up, or if Talonflame switches in on Rock Blast or Substitute. Boosting reduces Talonflame's switchin opportunities (and prevents it from switching in if rocks are up), Rock Blast OHKOs even if Heracross is burned, and Substitute makes it easier for Heracross to set up or use Rock Blast.

Offensive:

Aerodactyl-Mega @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Aerial Ace
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake / Fire Fang
- Pursuit / Roost

Role: Check

Mega Aerodactyl outspeeds Mega Heracross and easily OHKOes with Aerial Ace, making it a good check. But it cannot switch in safely, and it has trouble if Mega Hera is under a Sub due to Rock Blast and Close Combat OHKOing it.

645-s.png
Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 240 Def / 8 SpA / 8 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- U-Turn
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power Flying

This weird set is, surprisingly, a good Heracross lure (and also can lure Breloom, Chesnaught, weakened Celebi, Mega Pinsir, etc.). Thanks to Intimidate, Lando can safely come on Rock Blast while resisting Hera's STABs. HP Flying OHKOes after Stealth Rock, and also breaks the Sub (lol), forcing Hera out.
