This will serve as the central project thread for the revamp of the on-site Vullaby analysis. This revamp will include the addition of the Flyinium Z set, edits to all of the old sets, some consolidation, and a switch to bullet points when listing alternate EV spreads. Given the scope of this revamp and the immense relevance of Vullaby to the metagame, multiple LCers will be working on different facets of this project within this thread. I would also love to hear QC feedback from anyone at any stage.

The proposed sets, in order:
1. Physical Pivot (with a variety of EV spreads mentioned)
2. Mixed Attacker
3. Flyinium Z (written itt by LilyAC)
4. Choice Scarf
5. Nasty Plot
6. Overcoat

The WIP analysis will be in the next post.

[OVERVIEW]

Vullaby is one of the best Pokemon in the Little Cup metagame, thanks in large part to the ability to completely customize its moveset to suit the needs of its team. Vullaby's offensive typing allows it to hit every Pokemon in the metagame bar Pawniard at least neutrally with at least one of its STAB moves, and has powerful options such as Brave Bird, Knock Off, Air Slash, and Dark Pulse to take advantage of this fact. This leaves it with two "free" moveslots that can be used for a wide variety of coverage, support and boosting options. Vullaby's typing helps it defensively as well, with many useful resistances which make it easy to fit onto a team. Its terrific stats don't hurt either, giving Vullaby a mix of bulk and power that allows it to serve as everything from a sweeper, to a wallbreaker, to a blanket check to much of the meta. Vullaby's abilities also compound its usefulness. Weak Armor gives Vullaby to outspeed the entire unboosted (and much of the boosted) metagame after being hit by a physical attack, neutralizing its middling Speed and making it quite difficult to revenge kill. Alternatively, Vullaby can play more defensively with Overcoat, which gives it an immunity to Spore and does not lower Vullaby's Defense. In short, Vullaby's moves, item, ability, and EV spread can be customized to have it perform a wide variety of roles, and its typing and stats ensure that it will be successful in these roles. This makes it a useful choice on practically every Little Cup team.

Moves
========

Brave Bird and Knock Off work well together as Vullaby's STAB attacks, as Brave Bird's power forces in Flying-type resists which Vullaby can then cripple with Knock Off. The two moves also have terrific neutral coverage. U-turn allows Vullaby to chip away at and gain momentum against the Pokemon that can withstand its primary attacks, including Spritzee, Onix, and Pawniard. Vullaby is a safe and reliable choice for a Defogger thanks to how many switches it can force, an immunity to Spikes and Sticky Web, fantastic natural bulk, and potential Speed boosts from Weak Armor. If the team doesn't require Defog, Hidden Power Grass and Heat Wave are potentially useful coverage options for Rock-types like Onix and Steel-types like Ferroseed, respectively. It should be noted, however, that the Mixed Attacker set is usually a better choice on such teams.

Set Details
========

This Vullaby set can run an enormous variety of EV spreads depending on the needs of its team. This analysis will go over the important EV benchmarks in each stat, and then will list some common EV spreads that combine these benchmarks.

Many Vullaby run an Adamant nature and maximum Attack investment to reach 16 Attack, granting Vullaby a 75% chance to OHKO many Mienfoo and Timburr variants with Brave Bird and a 100% chance to OHKO Foongus after Stealth Rock. 16 Attack Vullaby is also able to 2HKO Eviolite-less Spritzee with Brave Bird more often than not, and can OHKO frailer variants of opposing Vullaby after a Weak Armor Defense drop. However, some spreads sacrifice this offensive presence in favor of greater bulk to more reliably check key threats. While 76 Defense EVs with no HP investment are sufficient to survive defensive Mienfoo's High Jump Kick and three hits of Onix's Rock Blast after Stealth Rock, with an additional 116 HP EVs, Vullaby avoids the OHKO from Reckless Mienfoo's High Jump Kick and from opposing Vullaby's Brave Bird after a Weak Armor drop. 116 HP and 156 Special Defense EVs allow Vullaby to avoid the KO from Focus Sash Abra's Dazzling Gleam after Stealth Rock, while the same Special Defense EVs coupled with 196 HP EVs allow it to avoid the KO from Snivy's Leaf Storm followed by Hidden Power Ice. 196 Speed EVs allow Vullaby to hit 15 Speed, Speed tying with opposing Vullaby and outspeeding +1 Speed Ponyta, +2 Speed Jolly Shellder, and +2 Speed Timid Omanyte after a Weak Armor boost. Lower Speed tiers are viable to run more bulk or a combination of bulk and power. 14 Speed will cause Vullaby to be less capable in mirror matchups and force it to tie against +1 Ponyta, +2 Jolly Shellder, and +2 Timid Omanyte. 13 initial Speed isn't usually ideal, as even after a Weak Armor boost, it will leave Vullaby outsped by faster Choice Scarf users, and the aforementioned Speed boosting Pokemon.

Commonly used combinations of the above EV benchmarks include:
  • The given EV spread, which maximizes Vullaby's Speed and Offensive power while granting it enough physical bulk to withstand some common attacks.
  • 116 HP / 76 Def / 156 SpD / 116 Spe with a Jolly nature, which gives Vullaby many of the defensive benefits listed above at the expense of substantial offensive presence. This spread checks Pokemon such as Abra and Choice Scarf Mienfoo better than the offensive spread.
  • 196 HP / 156 SpD / 116 Spe with a Jolly nature, which maximizes Vullaby's Special bulk. This spread is the best check to Snivy, Gastly, and Abra, but performs comparatively poorly against opposing Vullaby and Onix.
  • 196 HP / 76 Def / 76 SpD / 116 Spe with a Careful nature, which combines the benefits of the two bulky sets listed above but lowers Vullaby's Speed. This spread is a good blanket check to all the Pokemon listed above, but is weaker offensively and susceptible to being revenge killed.
Weak Armor is integral to this set's success; Vullaby's presence alone is often enough to deter the opponent from using certain physical moves. Vullaby is able to come in on attacks from common Pokemon such as Mienfoo's Knock Off and, if healthy, High Jump Kick, immediately threatening the opposition with powerful STAB moves or U-turn instead of remaining outsped the following turn. Berry Juice allows Vullaby to remain healthy without giving up valuable turns to use Roost; it synergizes well with Brave Bird because it ensures that the recoil isn't overly detrimental.

Usage Tips
========

Between Knock Off and U-turn, Vullaby is excellent at forcing in and weakening its checks early- and mid-game. Knock Off is often Vullaby's safest attack due to its high damage, extremely useful side effect, and lack of recoil; however, it may be punished by opposing Weak Armor users such as Onix, and enemy Vullaby. If you predict the opponent to switch to a Pokemon that Vullaby can't immediately break, such as Onix, U-turn can be used to gain momentum; however, be careful of using the move too frequently if Stealth Rock is up, as this can quickly wear Vullaby down. Brave Bird recoil and Stealth Rock chip damage are often helpful for activating Berry Juice after some prior damage, putting Vullaby out of range of certain KOs. Defog should be used when Vullaby forces out its foe; however, be wary of using it against a Pawniard switch-in if it can't be revenge killed at +2 Attack. Weak Armor lets Vullaby come in on physical attacks that don't OHKO it from enemies that it can force out, as Vullaby will almost always outspeed them the turn after, immediately shifting momentum into the Vullaby user's favor. Later in the game, when its checks have been worn down, Vullaby can use a Weak Armor boost to clean using Brave Bird. The ability does have its drawbacks; if Vullaby is unable to OHKO the enemy, it becomes vulnerable to attacks that hit its weakened Defense or are boosted by Analytic.

Team Options
========

Weak Armor Pivot Vullaby ranks among the easiest sets in LC to include on a team; there are far more teams than not that appreciate its ability to act as a wallbreaker, pivot, and soft check to a variety of threats. While this set lacks the longevity to reliably check the likes of Snivy, Abra, Fighting-types, and Foongus, it is able to soft check all of them while providing offensive presence, allowing Vullaby to fit onto teams that require secondary checks to these threats. Pokemon that appreciate Vullaby's Defog support, such as Ponyta, make for good teammates, though Pokemon that are especially reliant on hazards not being on the field may want more reliable hazard removal. Vullaby pairs particularly well with another Flying-type like Doduo to form a Flying-type stacking core, with Vullaby weakening mutual checks with Knock Off and keeping hazards off the field so that its teammate can pressure the opponent more easily. Similarly, Vullaby forms a potent Dark-type stacking core with the likes of Pawniard, Carvanha, and Alolan Grimer to muscle through shared checks with Knock Off and other strong attacks. Vullaby happens to synergize quite well defensively with Pawniard and Alolan Grimer in particular. Vullaby is incredibly adept at gaining momentum when paired with other VoltTurn users such as Mienfoo and Magnemite to form a VoltTurn core, and it synergizes extremely well with many of them. For example, Mienfoo handles Pawniard and Rock-types for Vullaby, while Magnemite forces out Fairy-types and Shellder; in exchange, Vullaby soft checks Foongus, Abra, and Fighting-types for them. Checks to Vullaby, including Spritzee and Magnemite, should be handled by the rest of the team. Examples of good teammates for this include Foongus, Ferroseed, and Ponyta. Eviolite Diglett is fantastic at supporting Vullaby by reliably trapping Onix, Pawniard, and Magnemite. Frailer variants of Diglett are more generally useful and can still support Vullaby quite well, but they struggle to trap Weak Armor Onix, Choice Scarf Pawniard, and Choice Scarf Magnemite.

Moves
========

Brave Bird is Vullaby's primary damage-dealing move. Knock Off is an alternate STAB attack with terrific neutral coverage alongside Brave Bird and the added utility of removing foes' defensive items. Hidden Power Grass hits many of Vullaby's most common switch-ins super effectively, 2HKOing Onix and substantially damaging Tirtouga. Finally, Heat Wave gives Vullaby an option to hit Steel-types, and, with the given Special Attack investment, it 2HKOes Pawniard, the only Pokemon in the metagame that resists both of Vullaby's STAB attacks. Defog can be used over either of Vullaby's coverage moves to support the team by removing hazards if either coverage move is unnecessary.

Set Details
========

The given EV spread grants Vullaby 16 Attack, notably allowing it to OHKO many variants of Fighting-types such as Timburr and Mienfoo, while still hitting 14 Speed to outspeed Scarf Gastly and Doduo after a Weak Armor boost. 80 SpA EVs with a SpA-reducing nature are enough for Vullaby to OHKO Berry Juice Onix and 2HKO Eviolite Pawniard after Stealth Rock with the appropriate coverage moves. Alternatively, an EV spread of 160 Atk / 76 Def / 80 SpA / 76 SpD / 116 Spe with a Serious nature sacrifices the raw power of investing solely in either Attack or Special Attack for some investment in each, allowing Vullaby to usually 2HKO Eviolite Pawniard and OHKO Berry Juice Ferroseed from full health, and has extra points in Defense and Special Defense to better handle common moves such as Mienfoo's High Jump Kick. Berry Juice works well on this set, allowing Vullaby to take a foe's attack, get a Speed boost, and return to full health.

Usage Tips
========

This Vullaby set can effectively lure in and surprise its common checks, such as Rock- and Steel-types. As such, bluffing a purely physical set early-game by not revealing coverage moves can be beneficial. Generally, Vullaby should use Knock Off early in a match to weaken its checks by removing their defensive items. When appropriate, Vullaby can use Heat Wave or Hidden Power Grass to surprise a check and remove it, allowing Vullaby to spam Brave Bird more safely. After its checks have been weakened or lured in and eliminated, Vullaby should attempt to come in on a weak physical attack to boost its Speed with Weak Armor and then use Brave Bird as appropriate. This Vullaby set lacks longevity or significant Defense investment, so avoid allowing it to be worn down by super effective attacks or Stealth Rock damage until Vullaby can provide the most use with its vast coverage.

Team Options
========

This Vullaby set is effective at taking out common Flying-type checks, including Rock- and Steel-types, so other Flying-types, including Doduo and Rufflet, have terrific offensive synergy with it. Other Pokemon that appreciate the removal of Rock-types offensively, such as Ponyta, also pair well with this set. As Vullaby gets worn down quickly by Stealth Rock, especially since it may be switching in frequently to aim for a Weak Armor boost, and it frequently forgoes Defog for coverage moves, hazard control from the likes of Staryu or Snivy is helpful. When Vullaby's Weak Armor is not activated, it is susceptible to being revenge killed, especially by Rock- and Electric-type attacks. Thus, Pokemon that can switch into these attacks, and especially Pokemon that can check Onix such as Mienfoo, synergize well with it. Finally, the immense pressure that mixed Vullaby's coverage puts on teams means that it frequently forces switches. Hazard setters, such as Onix and Dwebble, work well as partners because they can help Vullaby's team take advantage of the switches it forces.

Moves
========

Brave Bird and Knock Off form a strong STAB attack set, allowing Vullaby to deal heavy damage to opponents as well as soften up its own attempted counters or support its teammates by removing items like Eviolite, Berry Juice, or Choice Scarf. U-Turn allows Vullaby's team to preserve momentum by chipping away at incoming Vullaby answers and switching into a teammate to apply more pressure. While being locked into Defog causes Vullaby and its team to lose momentum, Defog provides valuable entry hazard removal support for the remainder of the team, particularly in scenarios where Vullaby is about to be knocked out or has had its Choice Scarf removed. Hidden Power Grass is an offensive alternative that nails common Rock-type Vullaby switch-ins such as Onix and Tirtouga, though it leaves Vullaby unable to do much damage to most other Pokemon.

Set Details
========

A 236 Attack EVs and an Adamant nature allow Vullaby to make up for its lackluster base Attack, giving Vullaby good odds of OHKOing Timburr or Foongus after Stealth Rock damage. 15 Speed allows Vullaby to outpace the entire unboosted metagame as well as slower boosted Pokemon like Modest Choice Scarf Magnemite as well as +1 Speed Torchic. A Jolly nature sacrifices raw power in exchange for outspeeding all Choice Scarf Magnemite along with other 15 Speed Choice Scarf Pokemon. A Naive or Naughty nature can be run alongside Hidden Power Grass in order to guarantee an OHKO on SturdyJuice Onix after Stealth Rock damage, but is useful for little else and compromises Vullaby's otherwise good bulk. The SpD EVs provide a significant boost to Vullaby's special bulk, while the given IVs allow Vullaby to run Hidden Power Grass without sacrificing any bulk. Overcoat is recommended for allowing Vullaby to switch into Spore from Foongus, though Weak Armor can be run to let Vullaby be hit by Knock Off and still maintain its Speed advantage.

Usage Tips
========

A lack of Berry Juice or Eviolite means that this Vullaby set lacks longevity if played without caution, and so Vullaby should attempt to avoid switching into even moderately strong neutral attacks. Careless use of Brave Bird as well as switching into Stealth Rock will also quickly reduce Vullaby's HP and put it into range of opposing priority attacks. Vullaby is best served using Knock Off and U-turn earlygame in order to chip away at its checks and build momentum for its team before attempting to clean a weakened team lategame with Brave Bird. Both Defog and Hidden Power Grass should be used sparingly as they often give the opposing team at least one free turn.

Team Options
========

Diglett is an excellent partner for Vullaby due to its ability to trap and remove Steel-, Rock- and Electric-types that check Vullaby, while Vullaby provides a safe opportunity for Diglett to enter the field with U-turn. Entry Hazard setters are recommended for allowing Vullaby to achieve KOs that would otherwise be difficult, as well as punish the switching that Choice Scarf Vullaby often causes. Due to Choice Scarf Vullaby's relative frailty compared to other sets, bulky teammates such as Ferroseed and Mudbray provide the team with ways to counter dangerous Pokemon, along with being able to set up Stealth Rocks for Vullaby. Mienfoo makes a good partner for Vullaby as it is able to form a pivoting core with its own U-turn as well as deal with Pawniard who Vullaby otherwise struggles to break through. Strong but frail attackers such as Gastly greatly appreciate Vullaby's Knock Off support as well as U-turn to offer a chance to get in safely, while other Flying-types like Doduo can form a strong BirdSpam core to break through enemy Flying-type checks. Stealth Rock removal support from Pokemon such as Staryu or Snivy is also appreciated to significantly increase Vullaby's longevity.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Nasty Plot drastically improves Vullaby's mediocre Special Attack stat, allowing it to function as a potent special sweeper in conjunction with Weak Armor. Air Slash functions as a STAB attack that hits the common Fighting-types for super effective damage and is Vullaby's better option for a neutral STAB move. Heat Wave hits most Steel-types, including Magnemite and Pawniard, for solid damage, especially after Nasty Plot. Hidden Power Grass provides useful coverage to hit Rock-types like Onix and Tirtouga very hard, though Dark Pulse is an alternative that allows Vullaby to OHKO Gastly without Nasty Plot.

Set Details
========

Maximizing Vullaby's Special Attack with 240 EVs and a Modest nature allow it to overcome its relatively low base Special Attack and low powered moves, turning it into a powerful sweeper after a Nasty Plot. With 116 Speed EVs, Vullaby hits 14 Speed or 28 after a Weak Armor boost, allowing it to outspeed practically every Choice Scarf user in the metagame and avoid being easily revenge killed. 116 HP EVs improve Vullaby's mixed bulk significantly, allowing it to usually survive attacks like Spritzee Moonblast from full HP and defensive Mienfoo High Jump Kick after Stealth Rock damage. Berry Juice improves Vullaby's ability to sweep significantly, as it is able to take most hits and return to nearly full HP on the same turn that it uses Nasty Plot, leaving it less vulnerable to priority attacks or potentially let Vullaby set up twice in a single game. Options such as Eviolite or Flynium Z can be run to allow Vullaby to set up on even more attacks or nuke potential checks such as Spritzee, but leave Vullaby unable to attempt a setup more than once and are much more vulnerable to opposing priority attacks. Weak Armor is mandatory on this set, as Vullaby is unable to effectively sweep most teams without the Speed boost.

Usage Tips
========

Vullaby can relatively easily find an opportunity to set up due to its solid Defense stat and plethora of resistances. Setting up against a physical sweeper is nearly always essential, as physical attacks are the only ones that activate Weak Armor and give Vullaby a boost in Speed. Obviously, Vullaby's checks such as Spritzee and Mareanie should be weakened before it attempts to sweep. Keep in mind that if the opponent knows that Vullaby is a Weak Armor set, they may avoid attacking it to prevent the Speed boost, which leaves Vullaby open to a revenge kill from a super effective attack. However, due to the plethora of sets Vullaby can run, it won't be immediately obvious what ability it is running. As such, it is advisable to refrain from using Air Slash or Nasty Plot too early in the game.

Team Options
========

Nasty Plot Vullaby appreciates Pokemon that can weaken special walls, specifically Pawniard, which can use Knock Off to remove their items and ensure a sweep later in the game. Other Knock Off users synergize well with Vullaby, especially Mienfoo, which wears down bulky Pokemon with Knock Off and High Jump Kick, as well as providing U-turn support for Vullaby to safely come in and prepare to set up for a Nasty Plot sweep. Other Flying-types, including Doduo and Rufflet, can form a Flying spam core with Vullaby due to its ability to bring in Flying-type checks, but generally other Vullaby sets perform this role better because they run Knock Off to weaken Flying-type checks. Entry hazard control is important as well; Pokemon such as Ferroseed and Onix can set Stealth Rock and Spikes to weaken switch-ins and help Vullaby get KOs on checks it would otherwise struggle against. These Pokemon also tend to bring in Fighting-type Pokemon Vullaby can set up on. Entry hazard removal in the form of Rapid Spin helps neutralize Vullaby's Stealth Rock weakness, which makes Staryu a good partner as well.

Moves
========

Brave Bird's high base power makes up for Vullaby's middling Attack, letting it check Fighting-types like Mienfoo and Timburr, despite the recoil damage. Knock Off alongside Brave Bird provides at least neutral coverage on nearly all of the metagame and allows Vullaby to support itself and its team by crippling Flying-type checks and bulky Pokemon through item removal. U-turn allows Vullaby's team to preserve offensive momentum while getting additional chip damage on Vullaby checks. Roost allows Vullaby to keep itself healthy throughout the match and utilize its extremely high bulk multiple times throughout a match. Defog is an option over either U-turn or Roost if the team requires hazard removal support, though it will cripple either Vullaby's longevity or ability to maintain momentum.

Set Details
========

The given EVs grant Vullaby a great deal of mixed bulk, allowing it to easily avoid most 2HKOs from neutral attacks, such as Foongus's Sludge Bomb after Stealth Rock even if poisoned. A more physically defensive EV spread of 116 HP / 236 Def / 76 SpD / 36 Spe and an Impish nature lets Vullaby check physical attackers better, avoiding the 2HKO from defensive Mienfoo's High Jump Kick after Stealth Rock. Vullaby's EV spread on this set is very customizable to the needs of the team. An EV spread of 116 HP / 156 Atk / 76 SpD / 116 Spe with a Jolly nature forgoes a significant amount of bulk in exchange for enough Attack to 2HKO knocked off Spritzee after Stealth Rock damage and has a very high chance to OHKO Eviolite Snivy, along with sufficient Speed to outpace most defensive Pokemon, such as Mienfoo and Mudbray. Another option is 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe with an Adamant nature, which maximizes Vullaby's offensive potential and allows it to OHKO Timburr at the massive expense of bulk; however, OHKOing Fighting-types is less important than on Weak Armor sets because the lack of a Defense drop allows Vullaby to defeat them in a one-on-one scenario without requiring that Vullaby OHKOing them. Overcoat's main draw is to allow Vullaby to act as a very strong counter to Foongus, who discourages Weak Armor sets from switching in for fear of Spore. Berry Juice is an option on defensive Vullaby to make it easier for Vullaby to drop Roost, however this reduces Vullaby's ability to act as a general check in the long term.

Usage Tips
========

Defensive Vullaby is very easy to use due to its very good bulk and ability to create momentum for its team. In general, Vullaby can take advantage of its good bulk and many resistances to come in and immediately put pressure on the other team by using strong attacks with a broad range of coverage and Roosting when its health gets low. U-turn can be used on predicted switches or against slower checks to keep the momentum for Vullaby's teammates. The popularity of more offensive Vullaby sets can often work in defensive Vullaby's favor, as its much higher bulk can let it defeat frailer offensive Pokemon that would KO Weak Armor sets. Keep in mind that, despite Roost, this Vullaby set is prone to getting worn down, as it will often repeatedly switch in and out of Stealth Rock and will often get poisoned by Foongus's Sludge Bomb over the course of a match, however it is still one of the best Foongus counters available.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can remove entry hazards support this Vullaby variant well if Vullaby itself is not running Defog. Staryu can use Rapid Spin and appreciates Vullaby's ability to check Foongus and Grass-types in general. Other Pokemon that benefit from Vullaby's ability to check Foongus, such as Fighting-types and Spritzee, enjoy having this set as a partner. Most offensive cleaners appreciate Knock Off support from this Vullaby, as it is one of the most consistent Knock Off users in the metagame. Other Flying-types, including Rufflet and Doduo, especially appreciate Vullaby's ability to lure in Flying-type checks and use Knock Off to cripple them. Pawniard switch-ins are useful, as Vullaby will frequently U-turn or switch out against it, making Ponyta, Mienfoo, and Timburr good partners. Finally, Diglett works well with Vullaby because it is able to trap and remove the Rock-types, Steel-types, and some Electric-types that give it trouble, while Vullaby is able to provide U-turn to get Diglett in safely.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Iron Defensive allows Vullaby to act as an incredibly strong general physical attacker check and take on its most common check in Onix, but is still vulnerable to strong special attackers and is rarely the best option for teams. Flyinium Z can be run alongside Mirror Move for the +2 Attack boost that Z-Mirror Move provides, potentially allowing it to sweep with Weak Armor; however, Vullaby's reliance on a Weak Armor boost to outspeed most offensive Pokemon, lowered bulk, and lack of power outside of Brave Bird makes this difficult to pull off. Hidden Power Fighting is an option over Heat Wave on the Nasty Plot or mixed attacker set, which hits Pawniard harder at the expense of hitting every other Steel-type for significantly less damage, as well as depriving Vullaby of its best way to damage Onix with Hidden Power Grass. Similarly, Rock Smash can be used to hit Pawniard and also run Hidden Power Grass, but Vullaby is usually better off running other moves as Rock Smash does pitiful damage to any other target. Tailwind is an option to boost Vullaby's own speed without compromising its Defense via Weak Armor, but the low duration means that Weak Armor is usually the better option for Vullaby to boost its own Speed, making Tailwind only particularly as a team support move.

Moves
========
Brave Bird is a strong STAB move, which when powered up into Supersonic Skystrike, can deal huge damage to anything that doesn't resist Flying or at least put a Flying-resistant Pokemon into range of one of Vullaby's coverage moves. Vullaby's second STAB move, Knock Off, is an alternative way for Vullaby to cripple its counters. Hidden Power Grass and Heat Wave provide coverage for Pokemon that would otherwise be reliable switch-ins, such as Onix and Pawniard. Rock Smash is an alternative that allows Vullaby to run an extra Speed or Defense point instead of Special Attack, but Heat Wave is generally preferred because it doesn't activate Onix and opposing Vullaby's Weak Armor, hits Ferroseed harder, and doesn't risk activating Pawniard's Defiant.

Set Details
========
The EV spread and Naughty nature maximize Vullaby's Attack stat so that Supersonic Skystrike does as much damage as possible. This importantly gives the best chance of OHKOing opposing Vullaby. A Naughty nature is used rather than an Adamant one along with 80 EVs in Special Attack so that Hidden Power Grass and Heat Wave break Vullaby's counters effectively, notably allowing Hidden Power Grass to KO Onix after a Supersonic Skystrike and Heat Wave to 2HKO Pawniard. Weak Armor lets Vullaby switch into physical Pokemon and outspeed them and makes it more difficult to revenge kill. With 116 Speed EVs, after a boost it can outspeed the vast majority of the metagame, including most Choice Scarf users. If you choose to run Rock Smash, you should use either a spread of 36 HP / 240 Atk / 76 Def / 116 Spe to take less damage from various physical attacks, such as Timburr's Mach Punch, or a spread of 36 HP / 240 Atk / 196 Spe to have a better chance of outspeeding opposing Vullaby and Pawniard.

Usage Tips
========
Without Berry Juice, Vullaby lacks longevity, so it's important that you use it at the most opportune moment to start breaking through the opponent's team. It's best used against physical attackers, because if it gets a Weak Armor boost, it's usually able to get more hits off - special attacks should generally be avoided if possible. Vullaby makes a great switch-in to Knock Off, because it activates Vullaby's Weak Armor while dealing minimal damage. Sometimes Vullaby makes a good lead because it's able to surprise other lead Vullaby and 15 Defense Fighting-types, which survive Brave Bird, with Supersonic Skystrike. Watch out for Onix because it's the Pokemon that best tanks a Supersonic Skystrike. Try to avoid activating Onix's Weak Armor if Vullaby has a Weak Armor boost itself by using Hidden Power Grass on predicted switches to it. If your team has a Diglett or Ponyta, you can first aim to trap or burn Onix respectively before using Vullaby.

Team Options
========
Ponyta burns physical attackers for Vullaby so it can take advantage of them via Weak Armor while staying healthy. Vullaby can also support Ponyta in return by luring Onix for it with Hidden Power Grass. Staryu is a great teammate for Vullaby because it can clear Stealth Rock, which Ponyta happens to appreciate too. Diglett is a good partner because it's able to trap Flying-resistant Pokemon like Onix and Pawniard. Because Vullaby lacks its usual utility against special attackers, it's important to remember to include checks to Abra and Gastly on the team, like the aforementioned Diglett and Pawniard. Another example is Mudbray, which synergizes especially well with Vullaby because of its ability to soft check Fighting-types, which is appreciated considering Flyinium Z Vullaby doesn't counter Fighting-types reliably. Doduo is a decent teammate choice for Vullaby because together they can overwhelm their shared checks and counters.

Moves
========
Brave Bird is a strong STAB move, which when powered up into Supersonic Skystrike, (comma) can deal huge damage to anything that doesn't resist Flying or at least put a Flying-resistant Pokemon into range of one of Vullaby's coverage moves. Vullaby's second STAB move, Knock Off, is an alternative way for Vullaby to cripple its counters. Hidden Power Grass and Heat Wave provide coverage for Pokemon that would otherwise be reliable switch-ins, such as Onix and Pawniard and Onix. It's a nitpick.
