Blind send out for first Pokemon
Following the directions to the water gym, you reach a small lake surrounded on all sides by grassy hills, darkened into grey-scale by the cloudy skies. As the path finishes, you walk down a small pontoon over the lake, and look over the side to see that it is completely still, reflecting like a mirror the brewing storm above. The only interruptions to the lake are small sheets of ice which spread out like a spider's web, clearly emanating from a hut on the other side which seems to be partially underwater.

You stand still for a moment, watching thunder strike in the distance and feeling the occasional gust of wind begin to pick up. As the ripples clear, you notice the reflection of a man riding a Pokemon out from the old hut across the lake, and looking up you see a grey-haired man dressed all in blue standing proudly atop a Lapras, looking down at you as the Lapras moves silently out.

Welcome, says the trainer. I am Athenodoros, leader of the Water Gym. He rides out further until he can step out onto one of the ice sheets, and motion Lapras to move in front of him as he continues. In this gym we pay homage to the diversity and power of water and Water-type Pokemon. We battle on the lake, using only what you might expect to find in the harsh conditions when water is the only plentiful resource. But don't worry. The ice sheets serve as viable platforms and can support a weight or carry a pulse if need be. We battle three Pokemon against three. So begin! Let us see who will release first!

Conditions:
Pokemon battle on ice sheets. This means that there are no sources of grass, but adequate rock sources exist beneath the lake and clearly water sources are not a problem. It also means that Pokemon with a density (WC/SC) of more than 1 will fall through the ice after a round standing on it, losing HP all the time they are in, which is equal to their weight class. Exceptions to this are Pokemon which can breathe underwater (Dragonite line and Water-types), are Ice-typed, are Flying-typed or levitate through trait, ability or Magnet Rise, or have the abilities to give a water or ice immunity or resistance. This effect is doubled if a seismic move weakens the ice during the round.
The overcast sky cuts the affects of Solarbeam, Synthesis, Moonlight and Morning Sun like Rain, as well as cutting the duration of non-Heat Rock sun to two rounds.

Such confidence emanates from that quote...

Anyway, we are here today for what can only be classified as a "classic". On one side we have the Official Smogon Know-it-All Athenodoros, leader of the Water Gym, and on the other side we have ze gramma nazi Its_A_Random, aka the challenger.

Both players are very old-school (read: they are old) which means that they have developed kind of a twisted relationship. More on that later. But it also means that they know this game and their pokemon, so this should be at least interesting.

The Gym Leader is among the best of the best...if it weren't for a teensy rough patch. Coming from two losses and having little free time to retreat and regroup, Atheno's morale doesn't seem to be sky-high. But don't let this fool you! He is still athenodoros. And if you happen to be here for a while, you should know that this means something. His team is well-trained and his overall record is impressive, sporting 2 badges and countless wins and being one of the first players to max a pokemon (a Lapras to boot!). Personally, I am a huge fan, but that is not important.

Pay attention to Illuyanka the Kingdra. A Part Dragon Type here is the only thing Atheno has to fight those pesky grass-types (and a spoiler: IAR brought some of them). It's versatility and power may prove to make a difference here.

The challenger is Its_A_Random. Leader of the Ground Gym, he has (tied with puppylover44) the biggest number of badges: 3. Counting his own. He often plays the ruthless trainer that demolishes the opposition by abusing their subs and wrecking bad strategies. His long playing record and dedication gave him an extensive team (including 14 trained Ground Types), making him, capable of challenging different gyms while remaining unpredictable. As we will see here.

Pay special attention to Flowra the Sunflora. No I am not drunk nor crazy (well...not that crazy). I meant the Sunflora. Thanks to its ability and the Item I bet IAR will use on it, it will hit like a fucking nuke, destroying the opposition with some ease. Also, hitting SE against 5/6 of the leader's team surely helps haha.

SPEAKING ON TEAMS, LET'S GET TO IT!

Random entered the Gym Arena ready to take on his compatriot, & while he was satisfied that he got an advantageous matchup, the fact that he was ordering first in a gym challenge again did not bode that well with him. Still, nothing he had not done before...

"Well well well. Looks like your blind send-out did not seem to do you much favours, but this Kingdra? Nothing new to us. Sheeldon, attack this foe with brute force!"

Discharge > Discharge > Discharge
IF (Non-Combo) (Evasive Damaging Move) is issued without suspense, AND Kingdra out-speeds you, THEN use Dragon Tail that action, pushing actions back.
IF Discharge becomes successfully disabled, THEN replace all remaining instances of Discharge with Thunderbolt.

Okay then, time for bloody IAR. At least Kingdra should do reasonably, I think.

Round 1!

And the first matchup is Sheeldon the Eelektross vs Illuyanka the Kingdra. The Leader chose a neutral matchup while the Challenger opted for brute force. Normally Brute Force>Neutral Type Matchup, but let's see how this pans out.

Illuyanka begins the match by using Focus Energy to get extra pumped. But not even all the adrenaline in the world could counter what came next: Sheeldon attacked with a vicious discharge and managed to Paralyse Illuyanka! oh boy.

Next, now faster, Sheeldon proceeded the assault with a powerful Magnet-boosted Discharge, while Illuyanka countered with Surf, with a nice guaranteed Critical Hit.

Speaking of Critical Hits, Sheeldon can also do that and does so, attacking once more with Discharge hitting the weak spot in the process. Illuyanka did manage to deal hefty damage next with Dragon Pulse, but it was still far away on the damage race.

Not a good start for the Leader...

Kingdra: Focus Energy for 12 energy

Eelektross: Discharge: 8+3+4.5+4= 19.5 damage for 5 energy
Crit: 16 (no)
Effect: 3/10 (yes)

Kingdra was paralysed!

Eelektross: Discharge: 8+3+4.5+4 = 19.5 damage for 9 energy
Crit: 5

Full Paralysis: 75 (no)
Kingdra: Surf: 10+3+7+3 = 23 damage for 6 energy

Eelektross: Discharge: 19.5+3=22.5 damage for 13 energy
Crit: 1 (yes)

Full paralysis: 98 (no)
Kingdra: Dragon Pulse: 9+3+7+3 = 22 damage for 6 energy

Where the hell did my Tentacruel go? I honestly thought that I brought it, and I seem to have just missed the one Water-type that can take on Ludicolo... well damn.

But either way, Kingdra's not doing well on this trial match - it was never made for just slugging it out. Time to bring back the one Pokemon who can do something to those other two nasties.

Ah yes, items. I think I might be a bit rusty after my brief hiatusy thing.

Anyway Starmie, we can take this ridiculous eel on even without an item! Time for a demonstration of those trick moves which set you apart!

Round 2

The Leader retreats his Kingdra and sends out Astraea the Starmie with no items. Whoopsie?

Astraea begins the match by flooding the arena with a mighty Surfable wave that crashed right on our favourite mutant eel. Sheeldon then counterattacks by shooting a weird green beam that proceeds to Giga Drain some health back from the Starmie. Looks like there is more than one way of hitting Starmie super-effectively!

On the following turn, sensing danger, Astraea uses Reflect Type to become a pure electric type for 6 actions. Which helps it weather the blows that then comes as Sheeldon attacks with Volt Switch, getting in position to exit the battlefield.

Finally, Starmie attacks once more with a salty Brine that hits right where it hurts, but the lack of STAB took away some power of it. Sheeldon then delivers the coup de grace and uses Roar to send Astraea back to its pokeball while itself goes back as well.

On the leader's side Tethys the Cloyster is sent out and awaits an item. The Challenger now has the advantage of being able to exploit that. Let's see how that works for him.

Starmie: Surf: 10+3+1.5 = 14.5 damage for 6 energy
Crit: 14

Eelektross: Giga Drain: (8+3)*1.5 = 16.5 damage for 12 energy
Crit: 11
+8.25hp

Starmie: Reflect Type for 5 energy

Eelektross: Volt Switch: (7+3+3)*0.67+4= 12.71 damage for 4 energy
Crit: 8

Starmie: Brine: 13+1.5 = 14.5 damage for 7 energy
Crit: 11

Eelektross: Roar for 7 energy
Comes Out (1-4=Kingdra, 5 = Swampert, 6 = Slowking, 7 = Krillowatt, 8 = Cloyster): 8 (Cloyster)

Cloyster comes out!

I so hate phazing moves. There are never enough subs to take care of them somehow, and yet they're absolutely devastating at times.

@ NeverMeltIce

Oh and, the reason that this was so late was Smogon being weird. I couldn't quite tell if it was down or whatever, but it sure as hell wasn't working.

@ Athenodoros: Smogon got attacked by a DD Gyarados. Everyone was affected.

"Okay Poncho, your time to come out & play fate on these speed ties! Take this Miracle Seed with you & try to not get yourself into a spot of bother!"

Giga Drain > Energy Ball > Giga Drain
IF Bide is issued, THEN use Substitute (15 HP) on the first Bide action.
IF (Protective/Evasive Move) is used successfully, THEN use Mist on the first instance, Hone Claws on the second instance.

Ugh, speed ties are the bane of ordering second. But Ludicolo is the bane of this gym, so I have no qualms about a fairly explosive course of action.

Avalanche ~ Icicle Spear ~ Explosion + Explosion

This should at least leave us in a reasonable position.

Round 4

Poncho the Ludicolo, in a desperate attempt to add some damage, attacks the returner Astraea with Fake Out and manages to get a much lovely Critical Hit.

Starmie flinches. What did you expect?

On the following turn, Ludicolo pumps up adrenaline to Endure future hits. But Astraea won't allow that and attacks with a combination of Twister + Whirlpool, that got the ludicolo to health low enough for the strong water to flush it away.

Ludicolo fainted!

...but at which cost?

Ludicolo: Fake Out: 4-1.5+3 = 5.5 damage for 4 energy
Crit: 1/16 (yes)

Starmie flinched!

Ludicolo: Endure for 15 energy

Starmie: Twister + Whirlpool: 8 damage for 12 energy

Ludicolo lost 1hp due to whirlpool

Ludicolo fainted!

Leaf Storm + Leaf Storm combo > N/A (Solarbeam) > Giga Drain
IF Dive is issued A3 without suspense, THEN use Chill A3.
IF (Protective/Evasive Move) is used successfully A3, THEN use Razor Leaf A3.

If I get haxxed by the RNG here, I think I am going to kill someone.

I feel like I shouldn't be down to one Pokemon already. Let alone with such ridiculously impossible odds. But okay, here we go...

Rest ~ Sleep Talk (Bounce, Razor Wind, Focus Energy, Ice Beam) * 2
IF
it rudely wakes you up, use Ice Beam from then on
IF it uses Double Team, use Sleep Talk (Icy Wind, Surf, Muddy Water, Bubblebeam) on the following action

Aaaaaaaaaand the round starts! Kingdra decides to....fall asleep? Seriously? Ugh. Oh well, i am sure Sunflora is.....cooling down. Just great! What did it use?

.....

Leaf Storm combo? On a Starmie? Damn, i wish i was here to see it.

Aaaaaanyway, the sleeping restored 12 HP to Kingdra, and now it is sleep-walking to tap into a....Ice Beam? Niiiiiiice. It even scored a freeze!

The Sunflora is unable to move. Life really sucks, doesnt it? If only it had Leaf Guard....

Using it's sleep-walking abilites, Kingdra manages to Focus it's Energy and wakes up, fully refreshed after taking such a delicious nap, but the Sunflora is seriously angry now, and with an elegant damage, summons several petals that harm Kingdra, but not as much as it could due to it's Leaf Storm combo earlier.

A timely freeze has saved Athenodoros (for now, at least) and left Flowra stuck into Petal Dance. Will he manage to turn the tables around? Or will IAR manage to fight through this hax and secure the badge?
