NU Weezing [QC: 2/2] [GP: 2/2]

Weezing-Modell.gif

[OVERVIEW]
Weezing's good physical bulk, defensive typing, and access to Levitate and Will-O-Wisp allow it to check various physical threats such as Sirfetch'd, Toxicroak, Silvally-Ground, and Golurk all in one. Weezing can also restrict defensive Pokemon and bulky setup sweepers such as Vileplume, Snorlax, and Doublade with Taunt. However, Weezing has no reliable recovery besides Pain Split, meaning it struggles to stay healthy. Many special attackers such as Dragalge, Salazzle, and Exploud easily switch into and threaten Weezing due to its bad special bulk and limited coverage. Finally, Weezing faces slight competition with other defensive Poison-types such as Garbodor and Vileplume, which check similar physical threats and offer some nice support options such as Spikes and a useful secondary typing, respectively.

Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers such as Golurk, Drapion, and Copperajah. Pain Split gives Weezing recovery and helps wear down opposing Pokemon like Guzzlord. Taunt restricts defensive Pokemon, prevents slow entry hazard setters such as Copperajah and Mudsdale from setting their hazard, and shuts down bulky setup sweepers such as Curse Snorlax and Bulk Up Scrafty. Toxic Spikes can be used instead to punish grounded Pokemon and weaken them, which is especially helpful for bulky Pokemon such as Vaporeon, Diancie, and Sylveon. Levitate is the preferred ability to better check Ground-types and physical attackers such as Golurk, Drapion, and Mudsdale. Weezing should run no item to counter Poltergeist users such as Golurk and Decidueye. However, Rocky Helmet can be used instead to punish physical attackers such as Passimian and Ninjask. Black Sludge is also an option for some passive recovery. 44 Speed EVs allow Weezing to outspeed Vaporeon and prevent it from passing Wish with Taunt.

Weezing works best on balance and more defensive teams that need a reliable check for physical threats such a Sirfetch'd, Toxicroak, and Golurk as well as a Ground immunity. Bulky Dark-types such as Guzzlord and Scrafty pair well with Weezing, as they check Psychic-types such as Xatu and Starmie and can remove Heavy-Duty Boots with their Knock Off if Weezing carries Toxic Spikes. Bulky Steel-types such as Copperajah and Escavalier also check Psychic-types and various other special attackers such as Dragalge, Goodra, and Heliolisk that threaten Weezing. In return, Weezing checks Fighting- and Ground-types. Vaporeon and Sylveon are good teammates, since they keep Weezing healthy with their Wish support. Checks to Salazzle such as Dragalge, Vaporeon, and Mantine are also helpful, as it easily sets up in front of Weezing. Finally, setup sweepers such as Glastrier, Ninjask, and Braviary appreciate Weezing's Toxic Spikes support, as it weakens many of their checks such as Vaporeon, Diancie, and Sylveon, and they can stall for poison damage turns with Substitute or Protect.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
====
Weezing can use Toxic instead of Toxic Spikes to badly poison a Pokemon directly. It also allows Weezing to poison airborne Pokemon such as Talonflame and Mantine. Corrosive Gas is an option to remove opposing items, but it is hard to fit over another move. Neutralizing Gas can be used instead of Levitate to set Toxic Spikes against Xatu and better check physical attackers like Machamp and Araquanid. However, outside of these examples, it has little use, and Levitate gives Weezing a key niche over other Poison-types in NU. Flamethrower is an option to hit Toxicroak and Steel-types, but besides Escavalier and Doublade, it does not do much to the other Steel-types, and crippling them with Will-O-Wisp is often enough.

Checks and Counters
====

**Psychic-types**: Psychic-types such as Starmie, Xatu, and Indeedee-F threaten Weezing with their powerful STAB moves. In addition, Xatu prevents Weezing from using status moves with Magic Bounce. However, they all dislike being poisoned by Sludge Bomb.

**Special Attackers**: Due to Weezing's bad special bulk, strong special attackers such as Exploud, Heliolisk, and Goodra easily break through it.

**Poison-types**: Salazzle is a huge offensive threat to Weezing, since it takes little from Sludge Bomb, is immune to Will-O-Wisp, and easily sets up in front of Weezing. Other Poison-types such as Dragalge and special variants of Toxicroak also take little from Sludge Bomb and pressure Weezing with their strong moves, but they dislike the chip damage from Will-O-Wisp.

[OVERVIEW]
Weezing's good physical bulk, typing, and ability Levitate [in this instance, and for the rest of this analysis, try to put less emphasis on Levitate. It is not part of Weezing's core identity anymore, and instead should be presented as a useful option. Basically, just briefly mention Weezing's access to its two useful Abilities.] allow it to check Fighting-types and various physical threats such as Sirfech'd, Toxicroak, Glastrier, and Flygon all in one. Beyond that, it is also a good status spreader due to its access to Will-O-Wisp and Toxic Spikes. However, Weezing's niche in NU is small since it faces massive competitions to Garbodor, Vileplume and Dragalge Qwilfish, [Qwilfish is pretty niche; Dragalge is a better pick for referencing Pokemon that are generally more viable] which check Fighting-types too but also offer other nice support options for the team such as Spikes, Corrosive Gas, or a useful secondary typing. Furthermore, Weezing has no reliable recovery, especially if it is not running Paint Split, meaning it is easy to wear down. Finally, many special attackers can easily threaten Weezing due to its bad special bulk. [I would talk about its recovery issues and poor special bulk before mentioning the stiff competition from other Poison-types, just so its not implied that these issues are Weezing-specific (because they're not)]

Also, note that Weezing has access to
Neutralizing Gas, which is crucial for neutralizing opposing Abilities. If any examples of this need to go in the Overview, it would be that Neutralizing Gas allows Weezing to set up Toxic Spikes without worrying about Xatu's Magic Bounce.

These Set Comments and Usage Tips should be rewritten with Neutralizing Gas in mind. It's loaded with applications, and you don't need to reference all of these, but here are some ideas you can draw from:
bypass Magic Bounce Xatu (! definitely include this! )
Levitate Pokemon that switch into Weezing will be affected by Toxic Spikes or Spikes if they're on the field.
better Tauros check (Sheer Force),
better matchup against Heatproof Bronzong by using Flamethrower
evade OHKO from utility Dragalge (Adaptability) or Inteleon (Sniper)
nullify Araquanid's Water Bubble, taking less Liquidation damage, and being able to use Will-O-Wisp on it
Prevent Electric Surge / Psychic Surge Abilities from taking effect

I'll also leave some other comments below to think about.

Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers such as Flygon, Glastrier, and Toxicroak. Beyond that, it is also Weezing's best move to handle opposing Steel-types such as Copperajah and Escavalier. [<- There's no need for there to be two sentences describing Will-O-Wisp targets. Replace Toxicroak in the first sentence with Copperajah, and leave out the second one.] Toxic Spikes punishes grounded Pokemon and weaken them, which is especially helpful for bulky Pokemon such as Vaporeon, Diancie, and Sylveon. Taunt restricts defensive Pokemon and prevents slow entry hazard setters such as Copperajah and Bronzong from setting up their entry hazards. Paint Split gives Weezing a way of recovery and helps to wear down opposing Pokemon additionally. Flamethrower is an option to hit Steel-types such as Copperajah, Bronzong, and Escavalier, but besides Escavalier it does not much against the other Steel-types and to cripple them with a burn from Will-O-Wisp is often enough. [<- Since Will-o-Wisp and Flamethrower are slashed together, talk about them together. Move this part up a few lines so they're described as alternatives to each other.] Levitate is the preferred ability to better check Tauros, [Earthquake isn't a mandatory move on Tauros, and in fact, Neutralizing Gas makes it a much better check against Body Slam spam] Drapion, and Flygon. Rocky Helmet is the item of choice to punish physical attackers and U-turn users. However, Black Sludge can be used instead for some passive recovery. 44 Speed EVs allows Weezing to outspeed Vaporeon and to shut it down with Taunt before it can use Wish or Heal Bell. If Weezing is not running Taunt, these EVs can put into Defense.

Weezing works best on balance and more defensive teams, that need a reliable Fighting-type check and Ground immunity. [<- Just a reminder that many Weezing will not fill the Ground-immunity role, so this should be presented as a situational instance rather than a general Weezing trait.] Bulky Dark-types such as Guzzlord and Scrafty pair well with Weezing, as they check Psychic-types, especially Xatu, and remove Heavy-Duty Boots with their Knock Off. Bulky Steel-types such as Copperajah and Bronzong also check Psychic-types and various other special attacker that threaten Weezing and forms a good hazard stacking core with it. In return, Weezing checks Fighting- and Ground-types for them. [Make sure to differentiate the services that Levitate Weezing vs Gas Weezing can provide for a team. One checks Ground-types, the other is a more solid physical wall due to its interactions with Sheer Force, Water Bubble, Rock Head, etc. users] Vaporeon and Sylveon are good teammates, since they keep Weezing healthy with their Wish support and also check various special attackers such as Kingdra, Blastoise, and Goodra. [<- Vaporeon and Sylveon are used primarily as physical walls. The Wish comment is correct, though.] Since Weezing struggles with bulky setup sweepers such as Glastrier, Braviary, and Scrafty, [<- these are iffy, especially Glastrier and Scrafty, considering access to Taunt, Will-O-Wisp, and Neutralizing Gas, and the common usage of Rocky Helmet and Pain Split] strong wallbreakers such as Exploud, Sylveon, and Sirfech'd can help here out. Checks to Salazzle such as Dragalge, Vaporeon, and Aerodactyl are also helpful, as it easily setup in front of Weezing. Finally, Pokemon that benefit from the Toxic Spikes support such as Glastrier, Flygon, and Braviary pairs well with Weezing. [Do you have something in particular in mind that these Pokemon benefit from having poisoned, such as Vaporeon? If so, include their names.]
You'll need to mention that Neutralizing Gas Weezing should be accompanied by Pokemon that check Ground-types.

**Special attackers**: Due to Weezing's bad special bulk, strong special attackers such as Exploud, Heliolisk, and Dragalge easily break through it. Salazzle deserves a special mention here as it can setup in front of Weezing.

**Bulky Setup Sweeper**: Braviary and Glastrier are bulky setup-sweeper, whose Substitute Weezing cannot break. As a result, they can make use of Weezing and setup in front of it. However, if Weezing carries Flamethrower, it can break Glastrier's Substitute or burn it, if it is slower than Weezing. If Weezing is not running Taunt, Bulk Up Scrafty can also setup in front of Weezing since it can heal any status issue with either its ability Shed Skin or Rest. Note the comment above- Scrafty can't really count on Weezing lacking Taunt and Neutralizing Gas at the same time. Remember that the options here are supposed to be checking Weezing, not the other way around- Glastrier cannot reliably set up Substitute in front of Weezing.

No q/c yet. Neutralizing Gas is pretty big thing that needs to be talked about with regards to Weezing. Iron that out, and we'll take another look!
How come Neutralizing Gas is being slashed over Levitate? The reason Weezing faces competition with something like Garbodor and Qwilfish is because of there access to Spikes. Neutralizing Gas to get guaranteed Toxic Spikes doesn't seem that great because a Poison teammate is pretty normal on Xatu builds. Check out some examples of Xatu + Poison builds here from NUPL:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen8nu-561935

Prevent Electric Surge / Psychic Surge Abilities from taking effect
Checking common and viable Ground-types like Flygon, Golurk, and Mudsdale is way more viable than checking Electric Surge and Psychic Surge that has no appearance in NUPL. Sludge Bomb's poison is really good for pressuring Xatu. Pain Split should also be on Rocky Helmet sets. Neutralizing Gas feels like a secondary slash or just slap it in OO so I'd check with the team. Considering Toxic Spikes aren't that great as expressed by me and other members like meri berry and Expulso, I feel like it should be on the 4th slash. The following set is what I'd propose:

[SET]
name: Defensive
move 1: Sludge Bomb
move 2: Will-O-Wisp
move 3: Pain Split
move 4: Toxic Spikes / Taunt

The reason Weezing faces competition with something like Garbodor and Qwilfish is because of there access to Spikes.
You're right about that for sure- Weezing doesn't have Spikes, or Flip Turn, or Strength Sap, or a bunch of the other cool things that other Poison-types have in this tier. The question is, what does justify Weezing considering it doesn't have the above? There's a solid case to be made that Weezing is overall more sturdy than the others between its Will-O-Wisp access, as well as Levitate, and yes, Neutralizing Gas.

Checking common and viable Ground-types like Flygon, Golurk, and Mudsdale is way more viable than checking Electric Surge and Psychic Surge that has no appearance in NUPL.
The Terrain interaction was merely one example of a Neutralizing Gas benefit, included as part of a non-inclusive laundry list (please don't ignore everything else) of other interactions in which the ability comes into play. It would be a big stretch to say that Terrain is enough of a reason to run Gas over Levitate, but Sheer Force? Adaptability? Heatproof? Water Bubble? Torrent? Guts? There are plenty of individual cases in which Neutralizing Gas has a better defensive output over Levitate, especially in a tier loaded many high-rank Ground immunities already. There might be a discussion to be had over whether one deserves to be slashed over the other, but it most certainly is not OO material.

Neutralizing Gas to get guaranteed Toxic Spikes doesn't seem that great because a Poison teammate is pretty normal on Xatu builds. Check out some examples of Xatu + Poison builds here from NUPL
I can also go digging around for NUPL games where Xatu wasn't paired with a Poison-type.
[POS] elodin vs Luck O' the Irish [MMM]
[PAB] SoulWind vs Feliburn [HHS]
Further, even if Xatu is paired with a Poison-type, just knowing that Xatu can't block it straight up is notable- removing it manually, even by switching a Poison-type in, creates openings that can be exploited. I will reiterate that Magic Bounce is also just one ability that affects Levitate Weezing's ability to operate.

==
Also, because I'm relatively new, I had to get this approved by C&C leader before I posted a Q/C. I'm not going rogue here, if anyone's wondering.

Thank you very much Mariannabelle and roxiee for taking time to help me :)

I've read the discussion on Discord about Neutralizing Gas and took roxiee's set and gave Neutralizing Gas a mention in OO like roxiee and poh said. As a result, I didn't include any Neutralizing Gas mentions in the overview, set details, and team section. I didn't replace Qwilfish with Dragalge because Qwilfish gives Weezing more competition due to its role as a physical wall and access to Spikes. Next, I also remote the buky setup sweepers in the C&C section. I've implemented any other suggestions from Mariannabelle and made some overall changes. I hope I didn't forget anything and hope it is better now :)

[OVERVIEW]
Weezing's good physical bulk, defensive typing (I think specifying defensive/offensive is nice for the reader), and ability Levitate allow it to check various physical threats, especially Fighting- and Ground-types, such as Sirfech'd, Toxicroak, Glastrier, and Golurk all in one. (Glastrier isn't a "Fighting or Ground-types". I'd personally just keep it as physical wallbreakers/threats. The emphasis on Fighting/Grounds should be the same for like other physical attackers like Drapion, Glastrier, and even Decidueye.) It is also able to cripple them with Will-O-Wisp, while it can restrict (restrict - singular) defensive Pokemon such as Vaporeon, Diancie, and Sylveon with Toxic Spikes or Taunt. (I'd rephrase this point. I get the Will-O-Wisp point but I feel like you should start the sentence off like "Furthermore, its access to Will-O-Wisp allows it to cripple the aforementioned physical attacks along with xyz". Will-O-Wisp does cripple the defensive Pokemon you listed but I feel like Taunt should only be mentioned here since that move actually cripples them from recovering. They can always use Vaporeon can use Heal Bell and Wish and recover for example of Weezing isn't using Taunt so just remove Toxic Spikes). However, Weezing has no reliable recovery besides Pain Split, meaning it struggles to stay healthy. Many special attackers threaten Weezing due to its bad special bulk. (I'd provide some example of "special attackers" that threaten it out) Finally, Weezing's niche in NU is small since it faces massive competitions to other defensiv Posion-types, especially Garbodor and Qwilfish, which check similar physical threats but also offer some nice support options such as the more useful Spikes or a useful secondary typing. (Qwilfish is no longer on the viability rankings and that Pokemon was pretty dogshit to begin with LOL. I'd also say "massive" and "niche" is a bit harsh since Weezing is on generally different builds than pretty much all the Poison-types in the tiers. In fact, Weezing is the only Poison-types that has Ground immunity. I'd just say it faces competition with x and y since the former can do this and the latter can do this. You also have some noticeable grammar things in this last sentence~)

Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers such as Golurk, Glastrier, and Copperajah. Pain Split gives Weezing a way of recovery and helps to wear down opposing Pokemon additionally. Toxic Spikes punishes grounded Pokemon and weaken them, which is especially helpful for bulky Pokemon such as Vaporeon, Diancie, and Sylveon. Taunt restricts defensive Pokemon, prevents slow entry hazard setters such as Copperajah and Bronzong from setting up their entry hazards, and prevents that bulky setup sweepers such as Iron Defensive Bronzong or Bulk Up Scrafty can take advantage of it. (Switch these two sentences and I'd say "Alternatively, Toxic Spikes can be used to xyz") Flamethrower is an option to hit Steel-types such as Copperajah, Bronzong, and Escavalier, but besides Escavalier it does not much against the other Steel-types and to cripple them with a burn from Will-O-Wisp is often enough. (little to no room to fit Flamethrower, functionally so I'd move this down to OO) Levitate is the preferred ability to better check Ground-types and physical attackers such as Golurk, Drapion, and Mudsdale. Weezing should run no item to better check Poltergeist users such as Golurk and Decidueye. However, Rocky Helmet can be used instead to punish physical attackers and U-turn users. (I'd list 2 mons like Passimian and smthn else here. IDT you need to write U-turn users since that falls inside the physical attackers category) Black Sludge is also an option for some passive recovery. 44 Speed EVs allows Weezing to outspeed Vaporeon.

Weezing works best on balance and more defensive teams that need a reliable check for physical threats such a Sirfech'd, Toxicroak, and Glastrier as well as a Ground immunity. Bulky Dark-types such as Guzzlord and Scrafty pair well with Weezing, as they check Psychic-types, especially Xatu, and remove Heavy-Duty Boots with their Knock Off. (I'd just say "Xatu and Celebi") Bulky Steel-types such as Copperajah and Bronzong also check Psychic-types and various other special attacker such as Dragalge, Goodra, and Heliolisk that threaten Weezing and forms a good entry hazard-stacking core with it. In return, Weezing checks Fighting- and Ground-types for them. Vaporeon and Sylveon are good teammates since they keep Weezing healthy with their Wish support. Checks to Salazzle such as Dragalge, Vaporeon, and Aerodactyl are also helpful, as it easily setup in front of Weezing. Finally, setup sweepers such as Glastrier, Ninjask, and Braviary appreciates Weezing's Toxic Spikes support as its weaken many of their checks such as Vaporeon, Diancie, and Sylveon.

Weezing can use Toxic instead of Toxic Spikes to badly poison a Pokemon directly. It also allows Weezing to poison not grounded Pokemon such as defensive Talonflame and Mantine. Weezing can also forgo an item in order to better check Golurk, Dhelmise, and physical Decidueye as well as Knock Off users like Drapion. Corrosive Gas is an option to remove opposing items, but it is hard to fit over another move. Neutralizing Gas can be used instead of Levitat to setup Toxic Spikes against Xatu and better check physical attackers like Machamp and Araquanid. However, outside of these examples it has not much use and Levitat gives Weezing the key niche over other Poison-types in NU.

**Psychic-types**: Psychic-types such as Starmie, Celebi, and Xatu threaten Weezing with their strong STAB move. In addition, Xatu prevents Weezing from using status moves due its ability Magic Bounce. However, all Pokemon dislike to get poisned by Sludge Bomb and Celebi does not want to take one.

**Special attackers**: Due to Weezing's bad special bulk, strong special attackers such as Exploud, Heliolisk, and Dragalge easily break through it. Salazzle deserves a special mention here as it can setup in front of Weezing.

Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers such as Golurk, Drapion, and Copperajah. Common sense, I suppose. Pain Split gives Weezing a way of recovery and helps to wear down opposing Pokemon like Guzzlord. Taunt restricts defensive Pokemon, prevents slow entry hazard setters such as Copperajah and Bronzong from setting up their entry hazards, and shuts also shutting down bulky setup sweepers such as Iron Defensive Defense Bronzong and Bulk Up Scrafty. Toxic Spikes can be used instead to punish grounded Pokemon and weaken them, which is especially helpful for against bulky Pokemon such as Vaporeon, Diancie, and Sylveon. Levitate is the preferred ability to better check Ground-types and physical attackers such as Golurk, Drapion, and Mudsdale. Weezing should run no item to counter Poltergeist users such as Golurk and Decidueye. However, Rocky Helmet can be used instead to punish physical attackers such as Passimian and Ninjask, (RP/AC) and Black Sludge is also an option for some passive recovery. 44 Speed EVs allow Weezing to outspeed Vaporeon.

Weezing works best on balance and more defensive teams that need a reliable check for physical threats such a Sirfetch'd, Toxicroak, and Golurk as well as a Ground immunity. Bulky Dark-types such as Guzzlord and Scrafty pair well with Weezing, as they check Psychic-types such as Xatu and Starmie, (RH/AC) IMO the hyphen wasn't necessary and a comma would be better and can remove Heavy-Duty Boots with their Knock Off if Weezing carries Toxic Spikes. Bulky Steel-types such as Copperajah and Bronzong also check Psychic-types and various other special attacker such as Dragalge, Goodra, and Heliolisk that threaten Weezing. Weezing can use Toxic instead of Toxic Spikes to badly poison a Pokemon directly. It also allows Weezing to poison not grounded Pokemon that are not grounded such as defensive Talonflame and Mantine. Corrosive Gas is an option to remove opposing items, but it is hard to fit over another move. Neutralizing Gas can be used instead of Levitate to setup Toxic Spikes against Xatu and better check physical attackers like Machamp and Araquanid. However, outside of these examples, (AC) it has does not have much use, (AC) and Levitate gives Weezing the key niche over other Poison-types in NU. Flamethrower is an option to hit Toxicroak and Steel-types, but besides Escavalier and Doublade, (AC) it does not do much against the other Steel-types, and to cripple them with a burn from Will-O-Wisp is often enough.

Checks and Counters

**Psychic-types**: Psychic-types such as Starmie, Xatu, and Indeedee-F threaten Weezing with their powerful STAB moves. In addition, Xatu prevents Weezing from using any status moves due its ability Magic Bounce. However, all Pokemon dislike to get getting poisoned by Sludge Bomb.

**Special Attackers**: Due to Weezing's bad special bulk, strong special attackers such as Exploud, Heliolisk, and Goodra easily break through it.

**Poison-types**: Salazzle is a huge offensive threat to Weezing, since it takes little from Sludge Bomb, is immune to Will-O-Wisp, and it can easily setup set up in front of Weezing. Other Poison-types such as Dragalge and Special variants of Toxicroak also take little from Sludge Bomb and pressure Weezing with their strong moves, but dislike the chip damage from burn through its Will-O-Wisp.
