A long time ago, back when DPP was the current gen, and there was no team preview, the above question was often asked. You had to be prepared for anything in that last slot and use your deductive teambuilding skills to figure out just what your opponent was saving in the back. Still today, we can use these skills to better build our own teams. When building, there will be times when you have 5 perfect Pokemon. Mons that fit together so well that you just can't seem to pick a final Pokemon. Or sometimes you have a crippling weakness to a major threat and can't think of a mon that will cover it that fits the team. This project aims to let the community figure out what the best last Pokemon would be for a given team of 5.

Every round, I will post a team that is missing one Pokemon. You guys will then post suggestions for the final mon. Over the next few days, these nominations will be discussed amongst the users until voting begins. Once the vote starts, people will choose the last mon that they think fits the rest of the team best. At the end of the round, the Pokemon with the most votes will be the winner! The team will be archived, and the user who suggested the set will have his or her name alongside the team. Think of this as a lesson in team building!

RULES:
1. Standard NU forum rules apply. No flaming/antagonizing please. Also no one liners please.
2. No joke sets. Sets that are plain bad/unviable are not welcome.
3. Don't be a jerk and flame the team / sets that people post.
4. Reservations are okay, as long as you post the set within 24 hours of posting the reservation.
5. No weird gimmicks. If you think a low-rated Pokémon should add on the team, please give an in-depth explanation, but non-viable mons like Pikachu are not allowed.
6. No slashing in your suggestions. You can't have 5 moves in a battle, why here?
7. Only one suggestion per round. Please only pick 1 Pokémon.
8. No changing the other members of the team, INCLUDING SETS. Only I can change the team and movesets.
9. Voting for your own nomination is NOT ALLOWED.
10. Please PM me on Smogon or PS! if you want to send in teams. I can't promise that your team will be featured but it's worth a shot, right?
11. Happy Posting!

This team is very weak to Status-users such as Weezing or Vileplume, as they can easily status the majority of the team. with Zangoose as the only Status-absorber, the team needs a more reliable Heal Beller, as well as an answer to standard WispHex Rotom, as it otherwise falls apart to it.

Round 1

Sceptile @ Life Orb
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
IVs: 30 Atk / 30 Def
- Giga Drain
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Earthquake

Hariyama @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 232 SpD / 24 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Fake Out
- Bullet Punch

Pelipper @ Leftovers
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 248 HP / 156 Def / 104 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Roost
- Scald
- U-turn

Mesprit @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Psychic
- U-turn
- Thunder Wave

Rhydon @ Eviolite
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Rock Polish
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
This Balance team features two incredibly scary Pokémon in the current metagame being mixed Sceptile and RP Rhydon. these wallbreakers/sweepers are supported by Mesprit and Hariyama, which are both very solid pivots, and Pelipper, which provides Defog support as well as another Fighting resist.

Pyroar @ Life Orb
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Wild Charge

Pyroar is a good last mon for this team because it struggles with Rotom, and Pyroar can switch into its Will-O-Wisp and Shadow Ball. I like that U-Turn from Mesprit and Pelipper can give Pyroar some free switches, and Mesprit will be U-Turning on Steelix which lets Pyroar throw out a Fire Blast. I put Wild Charge on Pyroar because this team doesn't have the best scald switch ins, and getting rid of Mantine is good for Pelipper since it doesn't have Toxic. This team also has 2 great Hariyama Switch ins which Pyroar appreciates.

This seems like a fun thread! Like you say, sometimes you can have 5 mons that seem really strong. Regarding the meta at the moment, having something faster than Sceptile is always nice, and in general, extra speed on this team seems good.

Swellow @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Facade
- U-turn
- Quick Attack

Swellow provides exactly this. On top of giving the team extra speed, it also carries priority, making there's less pressure on yama to provide this. Since Mesprit isn't carrying hw, this seems handy. It also helps deal with grass types in general, giving rhydon an easier time. U-turn provides a nice fast and slower pivot core with peli. I decided on running the physical set since the team lacks a little immediate physical power, and can still easily pivot out on obvious switches to lix etc.

Skuntank @ Lum Berry
Ability: Aftermath
EVs: 232 Atk / 132 SpD / 144 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit
- Poison Jab
- Taunt

Skuntank covers the issues this team faces making it a good last slot in the team. Firstly, it gives the team an answer to deal with Bulky Calm Mind psychic types with a handy psychic immunity and the ability to threaten with taunt and dark stabs, furthermore it's covers a way to get around Mega Audino more reliably with Poison jab. Pursuit is able to trap these targets too along with threatening ghost types such as Mismagius, Rotom and Haunter, this also pairs well so that Rhydon and Hariyama can set up/ fire off deadly attacks. It's utility goes even further for team giving it a toxic immunity and being able to soak up t-spikes.

Clefairy @ Eviolite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 152 SpD
Calm Nature
- Calm Mind
- Soft-Boiled
- Moonblast
- Thunder Wave

A custom Clefariy spread I just made a moment ago gives you an answer to Spell Tag and defensive Rotom which is a great annoyance to the team. Also gives you another win con if Sceptile or Rhydon dies and with Yellow Magic support can slow down the opposing team since this team is very slow aside from Sceptile. You also have a backup fire check in case Yama gets worn down to quickly since Pelipper/Rhydon aren't reliable fire checks but this is mostly just a bonus and not a necessary role. It also allows you to use Rotom as setup fodder which really only Mega Dino can safely boast. Also this gives you a scald switch-in which Sceptile and Pelipper could take but didnt enjoy the burn damage.

252 SpA Spell Tag Rotom Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 152+ SpD Eviolite Clefairy: 144-171 (41.8 - 49.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Pyroar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 152+ SpD Eviolite Clefairy: 146-173 (42.4 - 50.2%) -- 1.6% chance to 2HKO

Ninetales @ Life Orb
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Energy Ball
- Psyshock
- Nasty Plot

Ninetales is cool on this team. A lot of its weaknesses are covered by other members, such as Pelipper providing Defog support, Mesprit and Sceptile pressuring common Ground-types, and Yama / Sceptile / Peli soft checking opposing Water-types. Ninetales is able to break down opposing balance teams and provides a means of pressuring Wisp users, such as Weezing and Rotom, which the team previously struggled a fair bit against. It's also able to crush stuff like Xatu, Magmortar, and Hariyama to give Sceptile an easier time late-game.

Rotom-Fan @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Air Slash
- Trick
- Thunderbolt / Wil-O-Wisp

Rotom-Fan is a neat last mon for this squad. The team is very weak to SD Sceptile (especially considering Pelipper runs U-turn > Hurricane), and Scarf Rotom-Fan alleviates this weakness while also providing further utility. Scarf Rotom can trick troublesome Pokemon preventing a Rhydon sweep such as Weezing, Ferroseed, and Barrier Musharna, while also providing an actual check to Swellow aside from Hariyama's dual priority and DD Rhydon. Rotom-Fan provides another solid check to Fighting Ground, and Grass types (Sceptile in particular), and is a great gluemon for this team.

Edit: Forgot to mention that Sceptile and Rhydon both really appreciate the momentum that Rotom generates with Volt Switch, giving them free switch ins to either nuke the opposing team or set up and win.

skuntank is the right answer here, it fixes up the team's glaring weak to psychics as well as helps out w/ rotom and t-spikes (so peli isnt pressured to defog all the time). i'll submit something a little different here tho.

Liepard @ Blackglasses | Prankster
252 SpAtk / 4 SpDef / 252 Spe | Timid
Copycat | Nasty Plot | Dark Pulse | Encore / Thunder Wave

pard adds in a psychic check (albeit a softer one than skunk) as well as adding a bit of speed and being a soft-ish check to Barbaracle, which kinda cleans through this team p easily atm (esp if you go skunk, cause you'd have to run enough speed to taunt it before it sets up). it also works well w/ sceptile in wearing down yama so there's that too.

standard pursuit skuntank spread outspeeds adamant barb ya doofus - bolts
