[OVERVIEW]
Whimsicott is a very versatile Pokemon; its good offensive Fairy typing and immaculate Speed tier let it revenge kill Pokemon such as Virizion and Swords Dance Gallade, and it has a defensive presence with its great typing, Prankster, and ability to annoy opposing Pokemon with status moves. It is difficult to play around due to the unpredictability that comes with the great variety of sets it can run and its Speed. However, Whimsicott lacks the Special Attack and coverage to deal much damage; it notably struggles to beat Virizion despite being a Fairy-type. This make it rely on utility and status moves to disrupt foes. It also lacks great defensive stats to constantly check threats such as Regirock.
[SET]
name: Offensive
move 1: Moonblast
move 2: Energy Ball
move 3: U-turn / Psychic / Hurricane
move 4: Switcheroo / Hurricane / Psychic
item: Choice Specs / Pixie Plate
ability: Chlorophyll
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
U-turn is used to get Whimsicott out of bad matchups, especially after using Switcheroo, when its power is lower. It is especially useful against Silvally-Steel, which walls this set and is not affected by Switcheroo. Psychic hits Poison-types very hard, doing massive amounts of damage to Garbodor and Weezing, while being a reliable way to hit Fire-types neutrally. Hurricane hits Fire-types harder, with a high chance to 2HKO offensive Charizard and Talonflame, but is much less reliable than Psychic. Switcheroo is used to disrupt defensive cores, as Whimsicott can force in a Pokemon such as Charizard, Alolan Sandslash, or Talonflame that would otherwise wall it and limit the Pokemon's counterplay by giving it Choice Specs. Pixie Plate is an alternative to Choice Specs that sacrifices strength for flexibility, making prediction less of a factor. Whimsicott offensively pairs well with Pokemon that break Fire- and Steel-types, most notably Fighting-type Pokemon that can run Rock-type coverage such as Passimian and Virizion. Defensively, it appreciates support from Steel-types such as Silvally-Steel and Togedemaru to switch into Poison-, Flying-, and Ice-type moves, as well as a bulky Water-types such as Vaporeon and Lanturn to handle Fire-and Steel-types. With U-turn, Whimsicott can form solid VoltTurn cores with these partners.
[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Moonblast
move 2: Knock Off / Encore
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Defog / Stun Spore / Leech Seed
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Prankster
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Knock Off allows Whimsicott to remove important items such as Leftovers and Heavy-Duty Boots from defensive Pokemon such as Talonflame and Alolan Sandslash, making them much less effective at checking offensive threats, while Prankster Encore deals with offensive Pokemon such as Toxicroak by locking them into a setup move. U-turn is a crucial move for this set, allowing Whimsicott to let wallbreakers such as Lycanroc and Passimian in on its answers like Charizard and Togedemaru. Stun Spore provides speed control against fast Pokemon such as Talonflame and Choice Scarf Braviary on the switch so that Pokemon such as Virizion can sweep much more easily. Leech Seed gives Whimsicott a form of recovery, allowing it to exploit defensive Pokemon to increase its longevity. Whimsicott pairs very well with Pokemon that like its usual Steel-, Fire-, and Flying-type switch-ins crippled, such as Frosmoth and Scyther.
[SET]
name: SubSeed
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Leech Seed
move 3: Moonblast
move 4: Psychic / Knock Off / Encore
item: Leftovers
ability: Prankster
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
This set uses Prankster to its fullest potential, catching opposing Pokemon with a Leech Seed and then using Substitute before they can act. The combination of Leftovers and Leech Seed recovery almost makes up for the HP loss of using Substitute every turn, slowly draining the opposing Pokemon's HP until it's in range of a Moonblast. Psychic can be used to annoy Poison-types that can easily break your Substitute, while Knock Off is used to disrupt defensive Pokemon with recovery that can stall Leech Seed. Encore can be used to prevent setup Pokemon such as Ribombee from taking advantage of this set's passive nature while also stalling out the recovery of defensive Pokemon such as Vaporeon and Palossand. This set struggles most against Grass-types such as Tangela and Tsareena, and Whimsicott must be wary of moves such as Dual Wingbeat from Archeops and Talonflame that both break its Substitute and damage it. Defensively, Whimsicott needs Pokemon such as Silvally-Steel and Stunfisk-Galar that can tank hits from Pokemon that can get past its Substitute, and these teammates can also benefit from the passive recovery that Leech Seed gives them. It also benefits from Flying-and Fire-types such as Talonflame, Charizard, and Magmortar that deal with the Grass-types it struggles against.
