Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
With most of the teams being gone, feel free to post whatever you worked on for the sake of pools/playoffs/tiebreaks! Or anything else you feel like flexing!
Optimal spread vs sandstorm pokemon (when it mega evolves it gets Sand Force to beat Tyranitar)
Sharpedoknight (Sharpedo-Mega) @ Sharpedonite
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 192 HP / 116 Atk / 160 Def / 40 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Protect
- Crunch
- Screech
- Ice Fang
Sharpedo is a fun pokemon to build with because it has versatile and great abilities that support it in the 1v1 Metagame like Speed Boost and Strong Jaw. Sharpedo is seen as a fragile OHKO-lackluster but when you give it some bulk it actually take a hit and 2hko potentially with its STAB- and Strong Jaw boosted Crunch or Ice Fang. This set is Tanked to live a max attack Thunder Punch from Metagross-mega and an 252jolly Outrage from CharizardX. It's attack and speed are high enough to outspeed Greninja and Naganadel at +1 and to OHKO them safely. It's also high enough to OHKO max bulk Zygarde with Ice Fang at -1. Sharpedo takes care of the high-tier Psychic Types like Slowbro, Meloetta, Victini, Mew and Metagross that are now popular in the tournament scene as well as Stall thanks to Screech and Zygarde and Garchomp with Ice Fang. Sharpedo doesn't need Liquidation because it doesn't gain any more matchups than Crunch and Ice Fang already provide.
Dragoknight (Dragonite) @ Dragonium Z
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 188 HP / 128 Atk / 20 Def / 172 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Substitute
- Dragon Dance
I didn't like the original Dragonium-Z set so I made this one "Zard Proof" as Sub turn 1 basically forces Charizard to mega and Outrage in order to break the sub. This set also has a favourable matchup vs stall Magearna because sub on Turn 2 means youre blocking a potential Pain Split and get a free Earthquake.
Hi y'all, it's Charm (positive record in team tours mode) here to showcase a few fun and novel gen 8 teams and sets.
Sets:
Tapu Fini @ Assault Vest
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 52 Def / 96 SpA / 16 SpD / 92 Spe
Timid Nature
- Moonblast
- Surf / Hydro Pump
- Icy Wind
- Ice Beam
EVs to outspeed Naganadel after Icy Wind, kill 4 spd naga with Icy Wind into Ice Beam, and tank specs PZ hyper beam, rest in bulk for the best aggron rolls. This also lures Cresselia and some other trickmons (like Togekiss) and has a very good shot against subseed venusaur with Icy Wind into two Ice Beams. Hydro Pump is an option that allows for a very shaky Custap Zone matchup and also helps out against specs Rotom-Heat.
As Above (Togekiss) @ Wacan Berry
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 192 HP / 136 Def / 40 SpA / 140 Spe
Modest Nature
- Air Slash
- Mystical Fire
- Counter
- Nasty Plot
Cursed togekiss meant to lure Magnezone, Zeraora (which has to click Plasma Fists t1 to not throw vs scarf), and some unsuspecting AV metagross or glastrier sets. Can run Encore over Nasty Plot to punish anything slower that doesn't attack into your Counter.
Regi Set Go (Regidrago) @ Haban Berry
Ability: Dragon's Maw
EVs: 44 Atk / 172 Def / 168 SpD / 124 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Outrage
- Breaking Swipe
- Dragon Dance
- Laser Focus
Needed a Regidrago with good stall matchups, figured that DDance + Laser Focus would get the job done pretty well. As a nice bonus, Dragon Dance increases Speed without lowering Defense, which eases up on prediction vs some other haban dragons.
Ignore all the other junk here: this is actually good.
Trick Scarf P2 is like a slower normal-type Cresselia that's a lot harder to predict at preview. It retains most of the matchups of regular P2, but can now Trick on Sylveon and Fini, as well as some faster taunters like Heatran and Corviknight. Its speed is sufficient to kill Adamant Band/LO Shifu, so while it's definitely no hard counter it can cheese a few wins. The speed lets it outspeed zygarde-complete, while the bulk is enough to almost always tank and kill Regieleki (except a hit from Thunder which has a small chance to kill). HP definitely did something but it's slipped my mind what exactly. This P2 also has a hilarious Necrozma matchup where you get +1 spa, steal its specs, and then OHKO it with Hyper Beam.
In addition to those, I ran a few sets like Trick Scarf Metagross, Flamethrower Dracozolt, or LO Ninetales that were relatively unexplored when I played my games but have ended up in the compendium by now, so just go look at those there ig.
Teams:
Holy Terra (Landorus-Therian) (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 192 HP / 176 Atk / 104 SpD / 36 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Knock Off
- Smack Down
Big Red Dog (Entei) @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 132 HP / 124 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Protect
- Substitute
- Flare Blitz / Sacred Fire
- Toxic
Just a real fun team that makes use of some less common pokemon. AV landoT with Smack Down handles basically all fires, bulu takes care of waters and lures aggron (you outspeed and tank a Heavy Slam, gleam into CC kills), and Toxic entei handles a variety of mons that'd otherwise be problematic (ferrothorn, corviknight, most ices).
Rude Of You (Zarude) @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Leaf Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 28 Def / 4 SpD / 224 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Power Whip
- Darkest Lariat
- Superpower
- Bulk Up
Ex Nihilo (Nihilego) @ Power Herb
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 56 HP / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Meteor Beam
- Acid Spray
- Power Gem
- Substitute
Countertop (Avalugg) @ Choice Band
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Impish Nature
- Icicle Spear
- Body Press
- Heavy Slam
- Mirror Coat
Zarude + Nihilego is one of those cores I keep coming back to, as the amount of synergy those mons have between them is just insane. Superpower Zarude is a tech to beat Magnezone (and I figured Denis was never going to click an encoreable move into Zarude anyway), and Power Gem on Nihilego beats Metal Sound Heatran. Avalugg is max defense for the best mirror. Volcanion is somewhat annoying: Nihilego beats anything except scarf EQ, while Lugg beats the default specs and scarf sets (but loses to either teching Fling).
Turn To Burn (Arcanine) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 172 HP / 244 Atk / 84 Def / 8 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Burn Up
- Extreme Speed
- Outrage
Spark Notes (Zeraora) @ Life Orb
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 196 Atk / 152 Def / 4 SpD / 156 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bulk Up
- Plasma Fists
- Close Combat
- Play Rough
Whimsicott should be higher-ranked and I'll die on this hill. Anyway, this is just a nice fire/electric/grass core with Occa Whimsicott to lure necrozma and some annoying fires. Burn Up on arcanine improves registeel and avalugg matchups. Note that some kyurem sets, as well as Band Poison Jab Garchomp, can be problematic here.
Drago Counter? (Pheromosa) @ Choice Band
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Triple Axel
- Throat Chop
- Giga Impact
Drago Counter (Celesteela) @ Occa Berry
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 108 HP / 148 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leech Seed
- Substitute
- Protect
- Heavy Slam
Where's Fini (Regidrago) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Dragon's Maw
EVs: 196 Def / 116 SpA / 188 SpD / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Outrage
- Scale Shot
- Dragon Energy
Occa Celest is a great mon, AV drago is also a great mon, and Pheromosa gladly deals with some steels for those two. Bulky Tapu Koko is a 3-0 here but it's not that common. Also some fast trick band metagross sets might win, dunno if anyone runs those though.
Hi! I'm gonna post on the VR thread about specific sets so I won't be including all of the discussion here but I thought I'd still take the opportunity to showcase some of my favorite teams from the tour!
evenflow (Ferrothorn) @ Chople Berry
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
fuego (Carracosta) @ Power Herb
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shell Smash
- Meteor Beam
- Ice Beam
- Aqua Jet
Very likely the lowest base speed average of any team used in a 1v1 tour and has a lot of interesting dynamics at preview because of that. Aroma Veil and Sturdy really help to mitigate some of the issues that come with being slow so this worked out surprisingly well.
check it out (Tapu Bulu) @ Grassy Seed
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 12 Atk / 172 Def / 28 SpD / 44 Spe
Impish Nature
- Taunt
- Swords Dance
- Disable
- Horn Leech
save it for later (Rhyperior) @ Custap Berry
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 240 HP / 120 Atk / 100 Def / 44 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Rock Wrecker
- Earthquake
- Endure
prettier jesus (Thundurus-Therian) (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 12 HP / 12 Def / 252 SpA / 232 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Sludge Wave
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
These Bulu and Thundurus sets were some of my favorite things I've built. Not only are they quirky, they're good.
as necessary (Arcanine) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Def
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Burn Up
- Extreme Speed
- Outrage
run like hell (Silvally-Water) @ Water Memory
Ability: RKS System
EVs: 100 HP / 72 Atk / 160 Def / 176 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Multi-Attack
- Swords Dance
- Rest
- Parting Shot
Bringing Silvally Water was a blast from the past and this team worked out super well vs my opponent. Managed to grab a 3-0 with Silvally with its Trick immunity being a surprisingly large boon in the current meta.
frank (Hydreigon) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 176 HP / 72 SpA / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Flamethrower
- Focus Blast
aran (Metagross) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 152 HP / 252 Atk / 72 SpD / 32 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Bullet Punch
- Earthquake
- Rock Tomb
amelia (Tapu Fini) @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 100 Def / 20 SpD / 140 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draining Kiss
- Calm Mind
- Taunt
- Iron Defense
This was one of one of the two FDS teams I built this WC. It's nothing too out of the ordinary but I think Hydreigon is a lot more of a viable pick than some people think. Its ability to beat Metagross and most Urshifu can make it a really solid pick on some builds though I don't expect it to see much ladder usage.
really good (Kommo-o) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 252 Def / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Body Press
- Iron Defense
- Substitute
- Taunt
save it (Volcarona) @ Kee Berry
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Def / 120 SpD / 96 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Roost
- Substitute
- Bug Buzz
I got pilled into bringing Nidoking vs Denis but after some messing around with sets I actually decided to make a Nidoqueen instead. The extra bulk really solidifies some matchups and Specs makes up for the difference in power. This team really mixed it up from my normal builds and I really enjoyed that.
