Greninja @ Waterium Z
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Spikes
- Hydro Pump
- Gunk Shot
- Hidden Power Fire

Greninja's wide movepool in tandem with its Protean ability allows it to threaten defensive staples on bulky offense and balance such as Landorus-T, Ferrothorn, and Clefable. Additionally, its access to Spikes lets it capitalize on switches to put even more pressure on the opposing team. Hydro Pump is Greninja's strongest move due to its higher Special Attack and serves to hit the likes of Landorus-T and Heatran super effectively. When powered by Waterium Z, it deals massive amounts damage to neutral targets like Zapdos and Zygarde that would otherwise take a hit and OHKO it back. Gunk Shot and Hidden Power Fire cover some of the best checks to Ash-Greninja in the tier such as Ferrothorn, Assault Vest Tapu Bulu, and Tangrowth while also dealing with other targets that would require Greninja to waste the Z-Move like Assault Vest Magearna, Mega Scizor, non-Choice Scarf Tapu Lele, and Clefable. Unfortunately, three attacking moveslots isn't enough to cover every defensive threat in the tier, which leaves Greninja walled by Toxapex without Extrasensory, and even the likes of Mega Latios can force it out without Ice Beam. That's why Greninja works best when paired with a secondary wallbreaker that can take advantage of these Pokemon like Tapu Koko and Calm Mind Tapu Lele.

uh-oh, the game in trouble
Sick and tired of Ash Greninja? lol cringe I’ll change this
Hell yeah change this; also u typoed gren nature

Gunk Shot and Hidden Power Fire cover some of the best Water resists in the tier such as Ferrothorn, Assault Vest Tapu Bulu, and Tangrowth
Instead of water resists, specify ash greninja checks; this sets niche comes out of dumpstering the typical ash gren counterplay

That's why Greninja works best when paired with a secondary wallbreaker that can take advantage of these Pokemon like Calm Mind Tapu Lele
I think koko is the best example because of how good this gren set is at dumpstering the fat grasses for koko but lele is a fine example too, its just not the stereotypical mon that benefits hugely from the removal of fat grass types. Its fine the way it is tbh, but if you wanted another example koko and gliscor are great

id run naive gren, idk if this was just a typo but naive gives u a v good chance of 2hkoing tang before rocks w gunk if u predict it, and gives u a small chance to kill clef with pump into gunk, but like if you knock clef or smthing then its a good chance. also u have a good chance to 2hko mega latios w gunk after rocks.

even the likes of Mega Latios can force it out without Ice Beam.
maybe just me but i find this a bit confusing. you 2hko mega latios w gunk before rocks and if u get a poison you 2hko before them, so your able to punish mega latios unless ur opponent doubles mega lati or goes mega lati onto gren after a sack, which isn't great but not the end of the world.

Gunk does 41 min so its not guaranteed and you have to perfectly predict the switch which means if u click anything else ur forced out; in practice ive found mlatios to be annoying so i think its fine to leave that line in
