VGC 21 Zapdos

[OVERVIEW]

Zapdos's powerful Max Airstream and good Speed stat allow it to be a potent offensive threat in the metagame. In addition, its typing letsvit effectively check common Pokemon such as Zacian-C, Rillaboom, and Kartana Its STAB combination super effectively hits many key Pokemon such as Kyogre, Rillaboom, and Urshifu-S that Zapdos outspeeds. However, as it has no way of increasing its damage output by itself, Zapdos tends to struggle against Snarl users such as Incineroar and screens from Grimmsnarl and Gigantamax Lapras. It also has a hard time dealing with Ground-types like Assault Vest Landorus-T and Groudon as well as Dialga, which resists both of Zapdos's STAB moves.

move 2: Hurricane
move 3: Heat Wave / Weather Ball
move 4: Detect / Roost
item: Life Orb / Safety Goggles
ability: Static
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Hurricane is a powerful secondary STAB move that lets Zapdos boost its Speed with Max Airstream when Dynamaxed as well as hit Grass-types like Rillaboom and Amoonguss.

* Heat Wave deals spread damage and hits Steel-types like Zacian-C, Kartana, and Solgaleo for super effective damage. Weather Ball is recommended when Zapdos is used alongside Kyogre, as it gains a powerful Water-type move to hit Pokemon such as Groudon and Landorus-T. Both of these moves also allow Zapdos to hit opposing Electric-types such as Regieleki for neutral damage.

* Detect allows Zapdos to protect itself when needed and is used over Protect to bypass Imprison users such as Indeedee-M, but Protect's higher PP is helpful against Urshifu-S locked into Sucker Punch. Alternatively, Roost can be used to recover health and stall the foe's Dynamax turns. Additionally, the removal of Zapdos's Flying typing can be helpful against Pokemon such as Calyrex-I.

* Life Orb is the most commonly used item, but Safety Goggles is also a good choice because it is helpful against sleep inducers like Amoonguss and Venusaur.

* Static is chosen over Pressure, as it rarely ever affects the outcome of a game, while Static can trigger against Pokemon like Urshifu-S, Zacian-C,and Incineroar.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Roost can replace Heat Wave or Weather Ball and can be ran alongside Detect for increased longevity at the cost of coverage. Thunder is an option when running Zapdos with Kyogre for a stronger Max Lightning at the cost of having two weather-reliant STAB moves.

(add something about naturally outspeeding kyogre and urshifu, those are pretty big. rest is good)

* Life Orb is the most commonly used item, but Safety Goggles is also a good choice as it is helpful against Coba Berry(Goggles Zap will beat p much any amoonguss) Amoonguss and Venusaur in sun.

(static being the ability of choice deserves a mention)

Roost can replace Heat Wave or Weather Ball and can be ran alongside Detect for increased longevity at the cost of coverage. (Mention Thunder here as an option for Kyogre teams and stronger Max Lightning at the cost of having two weather-reliant stabs)

Access to a powerful Max Airstreams and a good Speed stat allows Zapdos to be a potent offensive threat in the metagame. In addition, its typing lets Zapdos check common Pokemon such as Zacian-C, Rillaboom and Kartana effectively. Its STAB (Gonna let GP get the call on this, but I think it would be preferred if we stated the typing if possible - just because then it is super clear to the reader what types are doing something.) combination hits many key Pokemon such as Kyogre, Rillaboom and Urshifu-S for super effective damage, while also outspeeding them. However, as it has no way of increasing its damage output by itself, Zapdos tends to struggle against Snarl users such as Incineroar and screens from Grimmsnarl and Gigantamax Lapras. (Just a clarity change, because only Gmax Lapras is setting the Veil) It also has a hard time dealing with Ground-types like Assault Vest Landorus-T and Groudon as well as Dialga which resists both of Zapdos's STAB moves and is not weak to Heat Wave. (Not super super necessary because the main point has been addressed, but welcome to keep it if you think it's necessary)

* Hurricane is a powerful secondary STAB move that lets Zapdos boost its Speed with Max Airstream when Dynamaxed as well as hit Grass-types like Rillaboom and Amoonguss.

Both of these moves also allow Zapdos to hit opposing Electric-types such as Regieleki for neutral damage.

* Detect allows Zapdos to protect itself when needed and it is used over Protect to bypass Imprison users such as Indeedee-M (My thought on this is that Protect can still be recommended for the greater PP. It might not come up super often, but just like Imprison Indeedee-M, there are non-zero situations. I think this is more my opinion however). Alternatively, Roost can be used to recover health and stall the foe's Dynamax turns. (A mention of removing Zapdos's Flying-type is relevant when talking about things such as Calyrex-I or Nihilego, say)

* Life Orb is the most commonly used item, but Safety Goggles is also a good choice as it is helpful against Amoonguss and Venusaur in sun.

* Static is chosen over Pressure as Pressure rarely ever effects (I'm gonna let GP team handle this, but I think this is the wrong one) the outcome of a game, while Static can trigger against Pokemon like Urshifu-S, Zacian-C and Incineroar. (Pressure does have a use however: as it triggers on ETB or at the start of the game, you are able to see what speed tiers exist, which is super relevant against Choice Scarf Kyogre as Pressure would trigger after Drizzle in this case)
