Quilava's combination of good Speed and Special attack allows it to function as a strong wallbreaker, and its STAB Fire Blast threatens special walls such as Gloom and Dustox. Charcoal allows Quilava OHKO physically defensive Tropius and Salac Berry Anorith with Overheat. Overheat also allows Quilava to OHKO Castform once it gets down to Blaze range. Quick Attack helps to pick off Abra and other weakened faster attackers. Hidden Power Grass is Quilava's best attack against Rock-types, as it helps shred Corsola, Onix, and Rhyhorn, which would otherwise safely switch into Quilava's Fire-type attacks. If Quilava gets down to Blaze range, it can OHKO Pokemon such as Flaaffy and specially defensive Gloom with Fire Blast. Quilava's Hasty nature preserves power on Quick Attack while guaranteeing Blaze range after a Tropius Earthquake.

Quilava appreciates physical attackers such as Aipom and Anorith threaten special walls like Noctowl and Tentacool, allowing it to clean through the rest of the team. Electric-types such as Elekid and Voltorb to complement Quilava, since they can repel the Water-types that harm it, while Quilava is capable of handling Grass-types. Gloom makes for an excellent teammate to Quilava, as it can stomach hits from Water-types like Staryu and Wartortle and threaten them out with Hidden Power Grass. Gloom can also use Stun Spore to debilitate faster Pokemon such as Aipom and Volbeat, allowing Quilava to eliminate them safely. Quilava is vulnerable to status from Pokemon such as Drowzee and Porygon, so clerics like Flaaffy and Mightyena are appreciated. Salac Berry sweepers such as Anorith and Beedrill appreciate Quilava being able to weaken physical walls like Koffing and Onix.

Fire Blast threatens a lot of the tier's premier special walls such as Gloom and Porygon Dustox. Charcoal allows Quilava to secure an OHKO to physically defensive Tropius and Salac Berry Anorith with Overheat at the expense of special attack drops (dex info). Overheat also allows Quilava to secure an OHKO on Castform once it gets down to Blaze range. Quick Attack helps to pick off weakened Salac Berry sweepers such as Abra and Voltorb Abra and weakened faster attackers (Quilava's QA doesn't KO most berry users from 25%). Hidden Power Grass shreds Rock-types such as Corsola, Onix, and Rhyhorn that would otherwise switch into Quilava's Fire-type attacks (Also mention that it's Quilava's best attack against Water-types until it's in Blaze range). If Quilava gets down to Blaze range, it can OHKO Pokemon such as Flaaffy and specially defensive Gloom. Quilava can use Charcoal to secure an OHKO on Mightyena with Fire Blast and Castform with Overheat when it is in Blaze range. (This might be niche, but mention Hasty is used to preserve power on Quilava's QA and also to get it in Blaze range after Tropius's Earthquake and guarantee it isn't OHKOed by Corsola's Surf)

(Here, mention Pokemon that specifically benefit from a special wallbreaker like Quilava, especially compared to Ponyta eg cleaners like Abra.) Quilava finds difficulty breaking down Ponyta, so physical walls such as Lileep and Wartortle are appreciated by Quilava, (AC) as they can withstand Double-Edge. Quilava appreciates physical attackers such as Aipom and Anorith who help break down that can threaten special walls like Noctowl and Tentacool, allowing it to clean through the rest of the team. (add a sentence here on Electric-types and how they offensively answer Water-types, while Quilava handles Grasses) Gloom makes for an excellent teammate to Quilava, as Gloom it can stomach hits from Water-types like Staryu and Wartortle while being able to and threaten them out with Hidden Power Grass. Gloom can also use Stun Spore to debilitate faster Pokemon such as Aipom and Volbeat, allowing Quilava to eliminate them safely. Other paralysis spreaders like Castform and Porygon help make it easier for Quilava to switch in. Quilava is also vulernable vulnerable to status (provide some examples Pokemon that would try to status Quilava), so offensive clerics like Flaaffy and Mightyena are appreciated. Salac Berry sweepers such as Anorith and Beedrill appreciate Quilava being able to weaken physical walls like Koffing and Onix. Spikes support from Snorunt are appreciated by Quilava, allowing it to 2HKO Delcatty and Specially Defensive Lombre after 1 layer. (Stick to Pokemon that are ranked on the VR for analyses)
