Introduction

Welcome to yet another Judge a Pokémon Express! This issue we'll be covering the controversial new version-exclusive Ultra Beasts, UB-02: Absorption and Beauty, plus other cool new Pokémon like Passimian, Oranguru, and Rockruff's awesome evolution, Lycanroc (Midday and Midnight form). Let's welcome pupper!!!, FellFromTheSky, heritage, Pikachu315111, GatoDelFuego, DHR-107, and {Pokemon_Vigilante}.

Lycanroc

DHR-107

DHR-107

The coming of the Werewolf. Or at least one of them is. Rockruff becomes the first Pokémon to have a game-based evolution. In Pokémon Sun we get to see Midday Lycanroc, and in Moon we see Midnight Lycanroc. Midday form is the more logical evolution. It keeps the same colors and improves on the already nice dog aspects of Rockruff. It gets much taller and lankier. It gives it a more graceful look; not as classy as a Pokémon like Furfrou or Ninetales, but it still has some elegance to its design. The eyes are large and piercing, likely as a form of intimidation versus foes.

Midnight form is where things get a little strange. This form of Lycanroc has decided that walking on its back legs is better than using all four. Its hands and feet have become oversized, presumably to help it keep balance while it's attacking. This form's lankiness has been taken to the extreme. Its arms seem to be ridiculously long, almost knuckle-dragging length, while being very thin. I can only assume it battles while wildly flailing its giant hands around. This form of Lycanroc apparently loves to fight, goading foes into making attacks so it can strike back with a devastating hit.

Both forms get different moves and different abilities. I hope they both get different stat distributions too. Midday form appears to gain access to a priority Rock-type attack, Accelerock, something that should help out against certain threats. It also gains access to Sand Rush to again bolster its likely already high Speed. Midnight form has access to Counter, which compared to what Midday form gets is a bit of a letdown. Along with its appearance of a werewolf, it also gets Vital Spirit. Again a letdown compared to its counterpart. I can see lots of trading happening so people get the form they want!

Passimian

DHR-107

DHR-107

American Football Lemur. Passimian only appears in Pokémon Sun. Passimian has broad shoulders and a long flowing tail, allowing it to be agile and powerful when the need arises. They live in large groups, working together to find food. The small touches of green on its shoulder denote which Passimian is which. I hope this translates to slightly different in-game models for Passimian. Even small changes like this could be very interesting. Obviously there shouldn't be as many as Spinda, but a couple of different "decals" would be cool. Passimian train long and hard to make sure their coordination is top notch. They even look for this in their trainer; some poor trainers will struggle with training a Passimian and unlocking its full potential.

Receiver is a brand new ability Passimian can utilize. If Passimian is on the field when an ally falls in a doubles or triples match, it gains that Pokémon's ability! The ability switched over could be anything if you aren't careful, but it could be potentially game-changing in a doubles game where Passimian is the last man standing. Imagine inheriting Huge Power or Magic Guard against defensive teams. There are lots of ways this could be a powerful ability.

Oranguru

DHR-107

DHR-107

Mystic Mage Orangutan. Oranguru only appears in Pokémon Moon. Its main body is a ghostly white in color, which is spruced up by the deep purple of its shaggy cloak. This shaggy cloak gives the design a lot of character, especially the nice touch of it using its own fur to bind its leaf fan together. Oranguru lives a solitary existence, meditating high in the tree tops. It seems apt that it gains Inner Focus and Telepathy as its abilities. Normal / Psychic typing is interesting but very usable. It negates Normal's Fighting weakness but adds a few other nasty ones. Telepathy is the interesting ability here, as it has great synergy with Oranguru's brand new move, Instruct.

Instruct allows Oranguru to "command" its partner Pokémon in double or triple battles to use the same move it just used again! This allows possibly stronger teammates to attack twice. I am hoping Oranguru has some decent defensive stats to use with this move and Telepathy. The two together could make this a frightening addition to double battles.

UB-02: Absorption

DHR-107

DHR-107

These Ultra Beasts are getting a little bizarre. We've gone from ethereal grace to bulging and powerful muscles. On a mosquito. A mosquito with arms that are more muscular than my legs. I'm not really sure what to think of this beast. Its powerful body and long proboscis show it can definitely hold its own in a fight. The color is a deep red-and-black design that exudes anger and potentially conflict, which is its end goal. We are shown it appearing in a showdown with Tapu Koko and Hala, presumably fighting for control.

The name also relates to chemistry once again. Along with all the other chemistry references in Sun and Moon, this one is a little bit more brazen. Absorption implies that it can capture and transform energy into a different form. It could use this to strengthen itself with abilities from several Pokémon. Much like Lycanroc, this form only appears in Pokémon Sun. Whether it is forced into this form by Solgaleo is unknown.

UB-02: Beauty

DHR-107

DHR-107

The complete opposite of Absorption. This tall, slim, dressed-up insect looks more ready for the catwalk than for a battle with Hala. It has a certain white pureness to it that is engaging and ethereal in a way that is different to UB-01. It is said that its long legs can propel it to a speed that allows it to evade lightning. It is considered so beautiful by Pokémon that it can infatuate anyone who looks at it regardless of their gender. Considering how irritating infatuation can be in-game, this could be a giant pain if you fight it conventionally.

It seems to replace Absorption in Pokémon Moon. The imagery shown to us shows the same fight between Hala and the Ultra Beast, with Tapu Koko coming in and protecting the Kahuna. These set piece battles might be part of a new way of story telling in Sun and Moon.

Lycanroc Midday & Midnight

FellFromtheSky

FellFromtheSky

Lycanroc's Midday form is fine. Not great. Not horrible. It's just fine. The relatively well-executed design has a nice color scheme and does exude a certain sense of "animal grace," but it isn't terribly interesting. It's long and graceful limbs as well as its large, crystalline blue, eyes are also nice touches—but everything Midday Lycanroc's design brings to the table has been done before. We find instances of graceful canines everywhere in the Pokémon world—Suicune and Ninetales (both its old and new formes) are prime examples.

Lycanroc's Midnight form, on the other hand, is an incredibly new and innovative concept for Pokémon—a werewolf. One might sense a touch of sarcasm in the previous comment, but that would only be half true. The werewolf is, thus far (though perhaps surprisingly), an unexplored concept for Game Freak. However, while Lycanroc's Midday incarnation had an uninteresting concept but was decently executed, the wolf's Midnight forme faces the reverse issue. While its eye-catching new color scheme and glowing eyes are most certainly in the edgy werewolf's favor, it seems to me that it's "hunched over" stance and stubby tail make the design feel far too cartoon-esque or even incomplete.

Strangely enough, what I truly think would have made an ideal design for Rockruff's evolution would actually have been a sort of middle ground, or fusion, between the two formes. Midday Lycanroc's elegant shape combined with Midnight Lycanroc's color scheme, glowing eyes, and werewolf elements is what I think the werewolf Pokémon should have looked like.

Passimian

FellFromtheSky

FellFromtheSky

In general, primates have not had a good track record as the basis for Pokémon designs. Mankey, Ambipom, and the elemental monkeys are all examples of how poorly such designs are usually executed. The sole gem among these failures of Pokémon designs is the Infernape line, and I am glad that it no longer stands alone as the only well-executed primate-based Pokémon. Passimian has only a decent concept behind it, but it is very well executed. Its official art depicts it in a stance that effectively portrays its underlying basis (monkey rugby/American football player) but is also, simply put, just plain cool. Its sleek form and simple base colors only increase my affection for the primate. Even better, its grey-and-white fur is offset by a cheerfully colored helmet and striking eyes. At any rate, Passimian is a charming design that stands out among this most recently released batch of Pocket Monsters.

UB-02: Absorption

FellFromtheSky

FellFromtheSky

This Ultra Beast is perhaps the most difficult for me to provide critique on. Unlike UB-02: Beauty and UB-01, UB-02: Absorption has a bright and warm, primarily red, color scheme, nonexistent eyes, and an imposing form. It certainly serves as a nice foil to the stick-thin Beauty and the diminutive UB-01—which is, in my eyes, its sole redeeming quality. However, composition-wise, UB-02: Absorption is a bit of a mess. It has four legs and odd, almost armor-like, patterns covering its body. In addition, its overly muscular form looks very out of place among the rest of the recently released Pokémon designs (and the rest of Pokémon designs, in general). However, I suppose this might be intentional on Game Freak's part, as both of the other two Ultra Beasts revealed so far have been composed with an ethereal, otherworldly, and decidedly alien design sense. I suppose that it's seems only natural that the aliens of the Pokémon world would stand out as unnatural and foreign-looking in contrast to the natives of the Pokémon world.

UB-02: Beauty

FellFromtheSky

FellFromtheSky

If there's one thing you should know about UB-02: Beauty, it would be that it is in no way deserving of its name. The vaguely insectoid creature has extremely obvious design parallels with with the Aether Foundation President Lusamine—they even strike the same pose in their official artwork (though UB-02: Beauty lacks Lusamine's awesome shoulder slant)! Unfortunately for UB-02: Beauty, everything Game Freak did right with Lusamine, they did wrong with UB-02: Beauty. Both have long slender legs and an odd cape-like mane of... hair in Lusamine's case and... wings? I think? However, all of Lusamine's personality is absent in UB-02: Beauty. Understandably, this is at least partially a result of the fact that Lusamine is human and, accordingly, a lot of Lusamine's features—notably her charming expression—can't (or shouldn't) really be expressed on the alien creature that is UB-02: Beauty. At any rate, I suppose the white-and-gold color scheme is nice, but its ridiculously thin limbs and cockroach-esque silhouette ruin any chance UB-02: Beauty designer might have had of earning my respect. I do admit, though, that everyone can have an off day. I hope this thing was theirs.

Lycanroc

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Back in 2008, Sega released a video game called "Sonic Unleashed," in which Sonic the Hedgehog had something or other happen to him by Dr. Egg Person and for some reason he would change into a werewolf at night. Don't ask me about the details, I never played it myself. But from the reviews, it seems that people really liked the daytime segments and REALLY hated the night segments. Aaaaand that's my thoughts on Lycanroc. The Midday Form is a damn cool wolf design: sleek (with the aesthetic obviously designed to work with Sand Rush), bright, correct anatomic proportions on the leg joints... at heart, it is a wolf. But there's enough about it that's been changed from just a wolf picture (it's been slimmed down, and the spiky mane has been added) to make it into its own Pokémon design.

Midnight Form Lycanroc, on the other hand... just looks totally awful. How many things can I name wrong with this design? First, the ~swishy~ emo hairstyle. Has Lycanroc not graduated sixth grade? Next we have the red eyes and spiky teeth. In my past reviews I've given praise to both evil eyes (such as with Vikavolt for putting the finishing touches on an already-dangerous design) and gnashing teeth (when used in a cartoon sense, such as on Yungoos and Bruxish). Put those two together, and they not only cancel each other out, but drag down the entire design. The issue is that Midnight Form Lycanroc is using the edgy design elements as a crutch to try and look dangerous, because it doesn't look dangerous or scary on its own. There's even more problems, too. Hunching over your character to make them look strong only works if they've got... well, actual muscle. Lycanroc looks like it's in serious need of some protein powder. Hunching over the design just makes it look like Igor the hunchback. "Oh yeah, but werewolves are only hunched over because they are men that can run on all fours now that they're a hybrid." But that doesn't make any sense, because Lycanroc is by default a quadruped. By standing up on its hind legs it gained the worst qualities of human designs without gaining actual stature (unlike successful evolutions Quilava-Typhlosion and Mudkip-Swampert) while losing out on the low-profile, quick wolf aspects. The whole things is just a total mess.

The name is pretty sick, though.

Passimian

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

So, the rugby monkey rumors were true after all. I suppose there really is no hope in wishing for ANY Pokémon in Generation VII to remain a secret, but oh well. Passimian's color scheme reminds me more of zaboomafoo than a monkey; why go with black/white striping? I guess it's supposed to be a sports jersey kind of coat, but I don't think the coloring takes it far enough to differentiate itself from a standard striped animal. It just winds up looking like a skunk to me. I'm being a little hard on this design for no real reason—I think this Pokémon is really cool! A sports monkey? That's only something you could find in the Pokémon world. While the color scheme might not instantly make me think of a monkey, I still really like it. Green + black + white looks awesome, and just about everything else about this design just clicks together for me.

Oranguru

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Ah, now this is something interesting. Oranguru succeeds in my mind at being a "Pokémonified" animal more than Pasimian. This is an orangutan with some extra mystic elements added on, rather than starting from those design elements and blending it with animal qualities. Purple Equals Psychic (thanks for clearing that up, Game Freak!), but I'm glad the design doesn't stop there and includes a fan for Oranguru to use. I'm guessing it's a "focusing tool" for Oranguru's mental powers, similarly to Alakazam? Oranguru is supposed to be intelligent enough to understand how to use tools like humans, just like primates in real life. Oranguru ticks all my boxes: good color balancing, great lore, and a solid animal design.

UB-02: Absorption

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Ahhhh, Ash, we meet at last! Now... witness the terrifying power of my Sutando! 「Red Mosquito」 has the power to suck you dry, if its Fists of Fury attack doesn't pummel you to smithereens first!

Ok, so at this point I accept that I made a mistake in the past: Ultra Beasts are not Pokémon, so I shouldn't judge them as such. Absorption looks... odd. Odd in a hilarious, good way? I don't know. I don't have a real basis to judge Ultra Beasts by considering they're new, but I kind of like Absorption. It's toned to perfection, and the muscle bulges just make it look absolutely ridiculous. Who knows what it will be doing in Sun & Moon? That's the only aspect that I'm concerned about. What role will UBs actually play?

UB-02: Beauty

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

There's really not to much to say about this design. It's an idol with long hair and antennae. It reminds me of a cockroach with the way the hair forms the outline of a shell, but that's probably a rude thing to say. From what I've seen of the Ultra Beasts so far they look more like they belong at a Lady Gaga concert than in a video game, but that's just me.

Lycanroc

pupper!!!

pupper!!!

Lycanroc looks new, but at its core is just more of the same. Just like Rockruff, it is just a bog-standard canine. The interestingly sculpted snout and cool spiky collar are dragged down by the utter standardness of the rest of the design. I must confess it does look halfway decent, but I just can't find anything that tugs at me in the concept (rock + wolf, nothing really inspired here), so that may be coloring my perception of the design.

Midnight Lycanroc, on the other hand, clearly possesses no redeeming qualities design-wise. It is the Shadow the Hedgehog of Pokémon, but somehow it is even worse than Shadow the Hedgehog and the first Shadow the Hedgehog of Pokémon, Zoroark. Its ungainly, club-like paws swing from noodle arms, and its devious smile is blunted by the awkward, geometric design of its nose. Clashing further with its angular snout are the sloping curves of its edgy ducktail, which for some reason extends all the way from its back, where it sprouts from a strange series of protruding rib-like rocks that only serve to look like some kind of weird saddle. Talk about cutting edge gone wrong.

Passimian

pupper!!!

pupper!!!

Passimian is a 'mon in possession of a fantastic concept whose design potential is blunted by the middling execution (that is to say, a design that, while hitting all the right marks, does nowhere near enough to take advantage of the full potential of the core concept). The reason being it stays a little bit too faithful to its natural inspiration (monkey) without taking enough from its football player concept. Yes, so it's holding a ball and has bulky shoulders and is wearing a helmet on its head and has leaves that look like team markings... but I get the feeling that these features just aren't emphasized enough. Obviously there is something to be said for subtlety in a design, but with a concept as off-the-wall and bombastic as a football-playing monkey, I think Game Freak could have gone a bit further. That is to say, even bulkier chest and shoulders, brighter, more sporty colors (the oranges and greens seem kinda soft and don't really scream "SPORTS"), and of course a bit more personality would help (the blank eyes don't give off the aggressive vibe you'd expect from a football player). Of course I am by no means upset with the design, only a little disappointed. It still looks good... it just could've been great.

Oranguru

pupper!!!

pupper!!!

Oranguru is nice. Solid color scheme, great core concept, and a strange resemblance to ninja (maybe it's just me). I don't think it's anything super amazing, but I still like it. I do wish that its purple "mane" of fur had been integrated a bit more smoothly into the rest of the Pokémon—perhaps purple patches or motifs here and there would have helped it seem more like shaggy fur and not some kind of cloak. I also am not a fan of how the fan was included as part of the official art and design, since it seems like something unnecessary to the core concept and only seems like an artificial addition made to make up for some nonexistent lack of visual flair. But whatever, in the end I think Oranguru's design is a stable one and one that can stand nicely on its own despite the rather redundant addition of its fan.

UB-02: Absorption

pupper!!!

pupper!!!

UB-02 Absorption is beautiful. A work of art. A zenith of form. An epitome of mastery (redundancy be damned!). Its glistening forme is the best thing to happen to Pokémon since... well, since Pokémon. Personally I see Absorption to be on a level of anatomical exaggeration higher than (or at the very least comparable to) Alolan Exeggutor... and that's a good thing! It shows a willingness to split from the "natural" without compromising the fundamentally organic nature of Pokémon. It looks alien, yet familiar, playing off the already unsettling qualities of mosquitoes and combining them with grotesquely swollen formes to create something formidable and unfamiliar. Jutting spikes are rounded so as to not clash with the overall bubbly look of the design or the main attraction: the massive, needle-sharp proboscis extending from its bizarre disclike head. Only thing I don't particularly understand is the inclusion of another pair of legs, because although this emphasizes its insectoid origins more, it makes its movements far more awkward looking, like those of some strange centaur instead of a powerful arthropod assailant. But maybe that was the point! Either way, I think it's a small gripe that nowhere near sinks this truly audacious and awe-inspiring musclebound mite.

UB-02: Beauty

pupper!!!

pupper!!!

Not sure how I feel about this one. You can tell that, similarly to Lopunny and Gardevoir, Game Freak really tried to push a feminine, humanoid angle here to simulate "beauty." I think they half-succeeded...? The lithe forme of UB-02 is definitely graceful and imperious... but its insectoid nature kind of dooms it to grossness, in particular the strange triangular head. Perhaps if Game Freak had given UB-02 a more natural, mammalian or humanoid head players would be able to better understand the reasons for its ability to attract Pokemon of all types. Obviously this is kind of a strange argument, but I do think if Game Freak is going to purposely try to make a Pokémon "attractive," they may as well go whole hog. As it is now, UB-02: Beauty is about as attractive as Gothitelle—they both have the air of a fashionista, but their bodies have become too geometric and too abstracted to elicit any real emotional response... from human viewers, anyways.

Lycanroc (Midday Form)

Pikachu315111

Pikachu315111

Finally a full-fledged wolf Pokémon! Midday Lycanroc looks real slick with its sleek body and rocky spikes jutting out of its mane. Of the two Rockruff evolutions, Midday Form looks like the most "natural" one, keeping Rockruff's color scheme and design aspects such as the rocks in its mane and having marks on its feet (though they change from brown to white) and ear tips. Midday Form looks like it's ready to get down to business, ready to strike with glaring eyes and sharp claws.

If there's one thing about Midday Lycanroc that is a downside, it's how its generic wolf design doesn't tell you much about its personality. Unlike real world wolves, Lycanroc have an independent personality, each having their own territory they keep to. But contrary to that, Midday Lycanroc will be loyal to its trainer, especially if they raised it since it was a Rockruff. A major battling aspect of Midday Lycanroc is its speed, having the ability Sand Rush to double its Speed stat in a sandstorm and an increased priority Rock-type signature move in Accelerock. A loyal and swift lone wolf; if I ever get one I'm naming it Geralt or Ciri (depending on its gender of course).

Lycanroc (Midnight Form)

Pikachu315111

Pikachu315111

We have a wolf Pokémon in a game whose theme is split between the Sun and Moon, so it would be a missed opportunity not to have a split evolution and make the Moon-exclusive Lycanroc into a werewolf-like beast. Midnight Lycanroc is a mixed bag for me. I like the concept of a split evolution with one being a werewolf, and Midnight Lycanroc would be terrifying to meet in a dark ally, but then you see it in the light. Midnight Lycanroc looks more cartoon-y due to being bipedal, having a slasher smile, and the mane being turned into a sort of mohawk. It also distances itself from Rockruff in other ways such as having red fur, glowing red eyes, and its "rock" element being limited to a pair or rocks clasped to its abdomen.

What Midnight Lycanroc loses in design, it does make up for in attitude. Midnight Lycanroc looks like a blood-thirsty maniac, and that's exactly how it's described (though oddly its not part Dark-type). Midnight Form is a blood knight; not only is it not afraid to get hurt, but it also invites the opponent to attack first so it has an opening to strike back viciously, its eye glowing more red in excitement. But contrary to that, it'll still trust its trainer, as long as the trainer lets it battle the way it wants. A lot of what Midnight Lycanroc does is made to be the opposite of its Sun counterpart, Midday Lycanroc, which sadly hurts it. It gets the ability Vital Spirit, which makes their shared ability Keen Eye look a bit more appealing (but not by much), and instead of an intriguing signature move it gets the underused Counter. A blood knight werewolf that plays by its own rules, but those rules sadly make it feel inferior to its Sun counterpart.

Passimian

Pikachu315111

Pikachu315111

"Leaks" are a dime a dozen when a new Pokémon game is coming out, especially during the early months. One reason for this is because every so often a leak will actually be revealed to be true, and one such leak now has gained a lot of credibility. And it's all because of this Pokémon, Passimian, the rugby monkey. Or rather the rugby lemur, but it's still a primate. When I first read that leak I couldn't imagine what it would look like without it being silly. However, now that I'm seeing it, it's not as awkward looking as I imagined it. Its a slightly bulky lemur that wears half a melon like a helmet, uses a whole one like a ball, and has created a logo on its shoulder with leaves. And it being in a well-known rugby (and gridiron football) stance is the icing on the cake. For such a ridiculous-sounding premise, they didn't do that bad of a job.

And it's not only its design that is rugby based. Its description is all about living in team-sized troops and having a leader that has them go through rigorous training and designs the mark on their arms to represent their troop (another bit of description and art working together, though I doubt we'll see Passimian with different marks in the game). This even goes for the trainer too; they won't listen to a trainer who has poor form when throwing a Poké Ball (well it was good enough to catch YOU!). But this also leads us to an interesting signature ability, Receiver, where Passimian will gain the ability of a fallen ally. While useless in Single Battles, in Double and Triple Battles (and by extension VGC) this is an ability to build a strategy around, but it'll all depend on how versatile in stats and movepool this ball-playing lemur is.

Oranguru

Pikachu315111

Pikachu315111

There are some "faces" when it comes to Pokémon leaks, and this is where our next Pokémon ape comes from. For Oranguru, all the leaker did was post an image of Wu Yong, a fictional character from classic Chinese literature who was a scholar and military strategist. He was given the nickname "Zhi Duo Xing", which translates to "resourceful star". But "xing" can also translate into "orangutan" to make the phrase into "orangutan with much knowledge". I think I don't need to go on explaining. Oranguru takes a lot from its Wu Yong inspiration such as the sage-like appearance, star on its head, and the fan. It comes together quite nicely, even if its odd to see a white orangutan (though we have Darmanitan if you want a more color-appropriate orangutan Pokémon).

While its appearance takes a lot of inspiration from Wu Yong, its description takes more from its orangutan origin. Oranguru live solitary lives in deep jungles and are called "the people of the forest". This is a neat little reference to where the word "orangutan" comes from, the Malay and Indonesian words "orang" and "hutan" meaning "person of the forest" (and it was originally used to refer to people who actually did live in the nearby forests until Europeans started applying it to the local orange ape). It even has been seen using human items including Poké Balls (so are there Oranguru trainers? Sounds like a Totem Pokémon to me!). However, its Wu Yong origins are still around such as it meditating, it providing medicine and food for weak forest Pokémon, and the fan it made out of leaves that it bound together with its purple robe-like fur (once again, art and description working together). This all leads to its signature move, Instruct, which has the targeted Pokémon use the same move it last used again. It's a move made for Double and Triple Battles and, with abilities to either prevent it from flinching or protecting itself from its ally's attacks, it's a partner any Pokemon with powerful and multi-targeting attacks would want at their side.

UB-02: Beauty and Absorption

Pikachu315111

Pikachu315111

UB-01 didn't really impress me that much as an "Ultra Beast"; if I didn't know it was an Ultra Beast I would have thought it was a Pokémon. I cannot say the same with the UB-02s. While still not what I was imagining an Ultra Beast looking like, the UB-02s have made me much more interested in the Ultra Beast's story. UB-02 Beauty is obviously the most interesting of the two for its resemblance to Aether Foundation president Lusamine. It gives a major alien vibe, with it being able to infatuate any gender with its presence accentuating this.

UB-02 Absorption is an odd one. At first glance it looks like a muscled humanoid, but that's only for the upper body and arms, since its head is like a mosquito, and it's a quadruped. Where Beauty looks creepy, Absorption looks intimidating. Its description agrees, saying the strength of its punches are off the charts (which, if being compared to a Pokémon, is something to be afraid of) and its "mouth" is as hard as diamond (in addition to being very long and quite sharp looking). Combined with Beauty being fast enough to dodge lightning, the battles with the UB-02 are building up to be quite the fight.

"UB-Lillie" THEORY UPDATE: Last time, I theorized Lillie was actually a young Ultra Beast, UB-00, brought over to our dimension due to an Aether Foundation experiment. She took a form of a young Lusamine, being the first person she saw, as a self-defense mechanism and was then raised by the Aether Foundation as Lusamine's daughter. After many years the Ultra Beasts finally found a way to get into our dimension to get Lillie back. With recent revelations I have additions and corrections to make. First, where does the UB-02s come into this? I'm going to say the UB-02s are the closest thing we can call Lillie's "parents". UB-02 Beauty took the form of Lusamine, as that's who Lillie recognizes as a mother figure, trying to get Lillie to remember who she is. UB-02 Absorption I more imagine as being an angry father; he's not going to mess around with psychology, he's going to take his daughter back by force and thus has taken a form of a muscular creature instead of a human character that's close to Lillie. As for the corrections, with it revealed that UB-01 has a subtitle I'm going to say Lillie is also a UB-01. The UB-01 we were shown is Lillie's "sister", which is why she took a form similar to her. We don't know what UB-01's subtitle is, but I'm going to guess it'll be a flower (I'm guessing "Tulip" as its one of the most recognizable member of the lily genus) as Lillie is probably designated as UB-01 "Lily".

Lycanroc

heritage

Oh man did these reveals get me excited. I was so excited when I heard that Rockruff was going to have a werewolf-based evolution, and not only did we get that, but a pretty cool feral, four-legged evolution as well. I have to admit, it looks a bit... basic (?), but I think it captures the "Rock-type wolf" alright. It certainly looks more like a Rock-type than Rockruff at least. Its in-game model and official art make it looks like it's ready to pounce on its prey at a moment's notice. And a priority Rock-type attack? Thank god for that, Talonflame is not a fun Pokémon. I'm a bit bummed that they're apparently version exclusives, though, I would have loved a mechanic of form changing based on the time of the day. Oh well.

But... Midnight Lycanroc... is just sooo much yes. I've been waiting for a real werewolf Pokémon for a long time, and Midnight Lycanroc does not disappoint. There are so many small details that add so much to the overall design: the crazed red eyes, the extra pair of claws on its back... its color scheme reminds me a lot of Yveltal as well, which I can totally get down with. And can we talk about its in-game animations? The way it sways back and forth on its legs and the little "come and get it" hand motions it makes. It seems like, unlike its daytime counterpart, Midnight won't be getting a signature move... which sucks. The biggest issue I have with it is that it's Rock-type. At least with the Midday form there is some resemblance, but Midnight looks like a Dark-type through and through. A bit disappointing, and I would have loved to see it be Dark / Rock, as that's a really cool typing, but I feel like they dropped the ball there. Overall though, I still think it will be on my final team, since I'm getting Moon, unless the overall stats are garbage.

UB-02: Beauty

Now this is more like it. Unlike UB-01, Beauty over here is just that, beautiful. While it almost has a "cockroach" feel to it (and trust me when I say that I can't stand cockroaches), they are way uglier than UB-02. The long, draping cape coming from its head makes it look so much more elegant than the hideous UB02: Expansion, and they did a really good job animating it in-game. Beauty doesn't look like a normal Pokémon, especially when comparing it to the rest of Sun and Moon's Pokémon, but I'm hoping that's what they were going for. It looks very alien, but at the same time it has this feminine pose to it that makes it look like it wants to be a model, I love it. On the website it says that it can infatuate any Pokémon regardless of gender, which would get downright infuriating if it turns into a real game mechanic, but I think it fits the design really well. It's clearly brave enough to face up against Tapu Koko, and it has the essence needed to be an antagonist character. Looking forward to seeing it.

UB-02: Expansion

I, uh... yeah there's no dancing around this, Expansion is just downright hideous. What's the point of the huge muscles? It's a giant bug, not a weight lifter (if there ends up being lore about this then fine but... eh). If they were going for the "terrifying" look to be the opposite of Beauty, then they got that down pretty well, but I feel like the muscles are a bit overkill. They could have removed those while keeping the same overall design, mainly the colors and long nose, and it would have had the same effect on me (while not looking so ridiculous). It's a disaster of a design, plain and simple. This might be bias against bug designs in general speaking to me, but Beauty has a bit of that, although not to the same extent, and I had no problems with that design. At the very least I'm interested in learning more about them? It seems like they'll be adding a lot more to the plot, which I like, at least.

Lycanroc (Midday Form)

So I looked at Lycanroc in its Midday Form, and the first thing that struck me is that this Pokémon reminded me of a gorgeous wolf, like one you'd see in a painting. It has great design and beautiful color, and everything that could make this Pokémon look realistic was included. I wish it had a special move, like Majestic Howl or something, that would really allow it to showcase its true beauty. I'm almost certain that many people would consider Lycanroc's Midday form almost as attractive as Ninetales, which was the most majestic Pokémon for a long time in my opinion. But Lycanroc, in Midday form, not only takes the beauty from Ninetales, it also takes the stern and powerful posture that reminds me of Arcanine. Now keep in mind that the Pokédex entry for Arcanine has its species as Legendary Pokémon, so I can honestly say that like Arcanine, in my opinion, Lycanroc's Midday Form looks legendary in every sense of the word.

The full moon must be in full swing! Are we sure they didn't just throw Teen Wolf into the game? Either way, this Pokémon will be arriving on the scene 19 days too late for the perfect season befitting of having a crazed-looking werewolf running around. The shades of red used to color this wolf make my hairs stand on end. But more than anything, this is one werewolf I'd never cross in a dark alley. There aren't many Pokémon that actually look like they may strike fear in the hearts of trainers, but this may be one of them for sure. So here we have a mohawk-wearing werewolf that is likely a counterpart to Gengar and Houndoom, which in my opinion were the standards for fright and fear. Whether you fear it or find it cool, Lycanroc's Midnight Form has no flaws in my book, and I'm pretty sure that many trainers will feel the same.

Did somebody hire the folks at Nintendo to build a prototype NFL quarterback? I mean, this Pokémon has an arm! Skillset aside, there is a lot to like about this primate, from the color to the build and everything in between. This is one Pokémon that screams exotic to me, because the soft green color of its body is tropical in nature and actually kind of relaxing to the eyes. This is one Pokémon I can get behind, and I hope that everyone can get behind it, because I'd hate to get hit with that melon it's carrying. For anyone who loves monkeys, this is the Pokémon I'd go for, especially because it looks A LOT cooler than Oranguru.

UB-02: Absorption

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

This Ultra Beast reminds me of the cartoon series The Tick. I find nothing really great about the design or colors, and it leads me to think more along the lines of Larry the Lobster than a strong beast bent on possible destruction. Nothing here could remind me of power and domination, because I feel need to worry having to fight something that just doesn't seem to look intimidating. If it turns out to have a strong stats and cool moves, great. But otherwise, this one to me is a major joke in all the wrong ways.

There is no universe anywhere in time and space in which this Ultra Beast could be considered beautiful. It looks like something that crawled out of a Van Gogh painting, which would be good, if this one had ANY kind of depth to it. It looks like a plastic surgery project gone wrong. The only thing missing is a set of high heels. If this Pokémon had more color and depth to it, I'd be ok with the design, but that can't happen. So with that being said, there is no hope in my book for this one.
