Elder Scrolls

i was pretty indifferent to morrowind the one time i played it. sure, the gameplay was pretty neat, and they did the whole sandbox thing well, but i fucking hated the levelling system. sure it makes sense, but it just wasn't fun to play imo.

never played oblivion, probably won't play skyrim. good old ps2...

Nirnroot in Oblivion
Trailer for Skyrim has confirmed Nirnroot to be there.

I love some of the small details of the game that the trailer shows, such as the lowered backing speed (which will really improves in realism). Also, I am still curious to see how the new attribute system will work - with it being taken down to only the three. ALSO NO ATHLETICS AND ACROBATICS

So, after visiting this thread a couple of times, I decided to fire up good ol' Oblivion again. I've already beaten the game once, so I decided to make yet another new character. He's nothing special, really; he's a Nord, so that's all combat, except I threw Conjuration in there. And have a strict rule for only using battle axes (I may use warhammers one day, but we shall see).

And so, in playing this file for a while, I've remembered one of the most annoying things about the game to me personally: Clannfear. Holy fucking ghost of Cubone's mother, how I hate those things. They are so freaking fast, and have some stupid reflect damage spell on them or something. WHY, BETHESDA, WHY?! Why do they need to reflect damage when they're already hard to take down? They piss me off even more than Mountain Lions, and those fuckers are a whole 'nother story...

oblivion was gross, the people looked the same, the dialouge was the same, etc. what i really hated about it was those skeleton champions and what not. there would be like 2 or 3 of them, and each one would summon a guardian, add to that some random mob would join the fun, and what do you get? NERDRAGE.

i agree with the poster above, clannfear were a bitch to take down.

i checked out Oblivion after i fell in love with Fallout 3... and its definitely no Fallout 3. but a good game regardless, ill likely grab Skyrim

Is it bad that, upon watching the video, I immediately obtained and maintained an erection the likes of which have never before been seen?

Also, dear Lord, I'm worried about the glitches. Bethesda can't make a game without a million glitches, and when you factor in that there are dragons flying around, well, shit's gonna get real. Currently, my enemies have decided that they should attack me from one direction, then teleport to a completely different side of me and strike from there. No movement, just teleportation. If the dragons do that, I will cry. Blocking better damn well be better too.

Honestly, coming off of Oblivion, Bethesda has a fair amount of room to improve this time around, and given their fanbase (and the fans' expectations), they had better deliver.

@Hipmonlee: I thought the same thing. Pokemon has forever addled our brains. Also, sigged.

Wow, that does look very, very cool..

Also when he was fighting the dragon, I still get that reaction of "dont use fire moves during rain you idiot, least of all on a dragon type".

Have a nice day.

Seeing one-hand and two-hand being confirmed as weapons skills was the only bad thing for me in that footage. Combining of spells will be fun, and I am interested to see whether or not you can combine different properties of spells (like a flame spell in one hand, a frost in another) and how the damage from these and MP will work.

ALSO MAMMOTHS CONFIRMED.

What I think will be awesome is, how spells are more dynamic. Like instead of just different kinds of ranged spells for destruction. You can spay the floor with fire or lay a rune to explode when an enemy walks over it. Same for ice and whatnot.

That E3 gameplay on G4 was amazing. Those dragons' AI is really interesting AND OH GOD MAMMOTHS. The skill menu looks a little unnecessarily complicated but wow I'm blown away. Those spells look amazing.

this looks absolutely incredible

i am a big fan of both the elder scrolls and fallout stuff, and i think it is fair to say bethesda have done a good job of learning from each of the games in either series to improve the later ones, so i'm really optimistic. weather looks great, environments look great, character models look great, combat, dragons etc etc

I'm completely sold on Skyrim, Bethesda have been busy. The thing that most impresses me are the new graphics, Oblivion had good graphics, but they were somewhat inconsistent, especially lava and grass always used to bug me. Oblivion was good but it did have some major ascetic and engine related flaws.

Skyrim's definitely a step toward their policy of "we create a massive game and let the player do whatever the hell they want". It's a similar size (area) to Oblivion apparently - I see that as a good thing because Morrowind, and Oblivion to an extent, were just too big for someone who plays casually. It was always nice to have a large map, but it can also be annoying and can be seen as a waste if you don't explore everywhere unless you pour 100+ hours in (which most players don't).

As a "hope", I hope they make the game overall more challenging, maximum difficulty on Oblivion was still a joke with summon Storm Atronach + paralysis + blocking (if you were a high level), and that's not even getting into the various terrain exploits for the AI. The Dragons do look to be more of a challenge, and a step towards having to be reasonably skillful in aiming spells is a step forward from Oblivion/ Morrowind where you could basically play with 2 fingers as long as you were making smart decisions. Also, as Hitmonlee said, the leveling system just doesn't work. Hopefully it can be rewarding and challenging. The main plot seems to be an improvement on Oblivion also.

Oblivion is awesome, but there are certain things about it that really irritate me. First of all, not being able to fight while on a horse is just stupid. It's a basic skill that you should be able to do. Also, I was really disappointed that they took some of the spells out (levitate and mark and recall). Also, I wish there was a character similar to the mudcrab/scamp in Morrowind. For those of you who don't know about these characters, they will buy anything you sell them at full price, regardless of your mercantile skill. Also, taking out the spears and bows (composite, longbow, short bow, etc) is just dumb.

fast travel makes mark / recall in oblivion generally pointless, and the other things that you point out are generally to simplify combat (spears and different types of bows besides material) and to get rid of glitching (levitate)

and have you ever ridden a horse

it's hard

you're not going to be swinging a sword at the same time either

Ugh, I really didn't like Oblivion. I hated how monsters leveled with you, making there seem like no sense of progression whatsoever. For example, I could make a really neat spell that gives the target +100% weakness to fire, than unleash a bitchin' fireball on them... and it'd do about 10% of their health. >_>

My rage culminated when I had to do an escort mission through cave for one of the guild quests, and every tussle always combined at least two of those damn spider daedras that summon their little hell babies and one Xivilai. @__@ Needless to say the weak as hell escort always died within the first two fights. At that point I was just about done with the game.

Also, archery was ass.

Still, I have hopes for Skyrim! The E3 footage looks pretty cool, and I hope they tone down the monster scaling a bit, but that's just my personal hope.

In case anyone is having problems with the combat in Oblivion, high elves are by far THE BEST race to choose. Why?? Everything in oblivion revolves around magic. Combat is nice too, but magic can do everything combat can do and MUCH MUCH more. Seeing as how high elves have the highest amount of magicka, they are naturally the best choice for this. Sure, their weakness to magicka may hinder them slightly, but you can just wear enchanted items that allow you to resist those weaknesses. As far as what type of magic to use, chameleon is IMO the best spell in the game. If you have a 100% chameleon ring, NOTHING can stop you. I go on random killing sprees all the time and the guards NEVER find me xD. After chameleon, I'd have to say that paralysis and silence are probably the two most useful spells, as they allow you to incapacitate whatever is getting in your way.

An 100% Chameleon ring is non-existent. If you mean a wardrobe of Chameleon gear, then yes, you can achieve that. However, it is literally the most broken thing one can do in Oblivion, as no one can see you. It is like casting Invisibility, except you can still attack and whatnot. Closely following that are reflect damage + resist magic/spell absorption/reflect spell. You only die to poison and arrows in regular fights. I did it once, and it was too easy. I don't play that file anymore. Though I agree, magic is one of the easiest ways to play the game.

Horse riding is a bit hard in Oblivion, and apparently they're making it smoother in Skyrim. However, I don't see the appeal of fighting on the back of one. It'll just be harder for you to hit them if you're not using a weapon with decent range, and most horses are weak as hell anyway, so they'll just get taken down. Oh, side note, doomstones are returning, and they change the character's birthsign, as opposed to just adding an extra greater power like in Oblivion.

Monster scaling seemed alright to me. The game would've been way too easy if the enemies weren't stronger. But the dungeons in Skyrim apparently level lock once you enter it (meaning if you go in at level 1, all enemies will always be level 1 enemies), so maybe you'll like that. Don't quote me on that though until I remember where I read it, lol.

Yeah, I knew there was some kind of item that gave you 100% chameleon. I forgot whether it was a ring or something else but I knew there was something.

Anyways, on an entirely different topic, is anyone a vampire in Oblivion?? I tried in once, but it gets kind of tedious and it's annoying not being able to go out during the day.

I used magic in Oblivion since the battle system was pretty dull as pure hack and slash and block. That's also part of why shouts sound interesting, you get some additional variety in combat even if you don't use a magic-based character.

Oblivion was really the game that got me into gaming. I've probably sunk more than 1000 hours into it >.>

Needless to say, I'm eagerly awaiting Skyrim with bated breath.
