The entire Bay Area is overpriced and similar to your description. Oakland is no different, just a lot more crime.
You get more quality and quantity for your money in Oakland, the same shit in SF is more expensive or shittier. I'm talking about food (both restaurants and grocery stores), clothing, bike maintenance, rent. Is it still expensive? Of course, but it's still less money for (usually) higher quality stuff. Crime is nbd, you don't bother it and it won't bother you. I used to live off San Pablo never had anything happen to me more important than a bike wheel getting stolen, and that shit happens everywhere.

Detroit is still considered a city?

I've never been to any of those cities, so I have no opinion of them. I've been to Chicago and hated it. It rained the entire time(which caused me to get sick), a taxi I was in wrecked, the ratio of good to rude people favored the rude, at a aquarium, a sea otter spat water in my face(actually that might of caused my sickness), the tour guide was a complete moron, and some guy tried to sell me drugs( guess it wouldn't be the "complete city experience" if that didn't happen). I did get to see the Blue Men Group live and I ate some really good pizza, so yeah plus side. I've also been to Orlando, which I loved, but it's sadly in Florida and I have no desire to step into that state ever again.

I've genuinely never heard of Anchorage, is this something to be ashamed of?
I can't really answer the question properly since I've lived in London all my life and the only other city which I've spent significant time in is Tel Aviv. I don't speak Hebrew (yet) so for now I'll have to dismiss it.

From the inside, though, London does seem to be fantastic

I don't think Detroit is as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The area around the stadiums is nice as well as Mexican Town and some of the downtown areas. I think the media really plays up the desolation a lot and hopefully the bankruptcy will be the kick in the ass needed to set the city straight.

Of course it does have its flaws, but I had to pick it and rep Michigan.

Also whats up with the list? No New York, Boston, DC or parts of the world beyond 'MURICA?

If I was to include everywhere I have been I would most likely pick Madrid.

London's where it's at - it's a multicultural hub and also it has astounding amounts of parkland for a city (best parks are Blackheath Park, Richmond Park, and Hyde Park). It has loads of great restaurants from every cuisine imaginable, and has great historical and cultural interest, with loads of great art galleries, museums and theatres - my personal favourites are the V&A museum and the National Theatre. It's got a good nightlife as well. However it's a nasty place to drive in, very congested, and some parts are annoyingly twee. Best parts are Notting Hill, parts of Brixton, Kilburn, the South Bank, Islington, and Tooting in my opinion.

I always preferred Celadon, it is where all the best shops and people are, including a casino and a restaurant, its a much more active and living place than lets say Saffron.

Also, lol Anchorage. I'm pretty sure no one gives a damn about/likes anywhere in Alaska.

As for non-American cities, I've never been to any but I would like to visit Tokyo and other Japanese cities like Osaka (I find Japanese culture/Japan interesting)

Copenhagen, Denmark is gonna be my pick the reasons shall be listed below.

- Drinking a lot at parties is not looked down upon - not even if you are 15
- We have the best soda in the entire universe - Faxe Kondi

- The women look good.

Edit: also because in Danish the city is called København - "Køb en havn" literally means "Buy a harbor" in Danish; how awesome is that?

If they had San Diego i'd totally vote for it.

Gotta agree with everything here, just add Dalston and Shoreditch onto your list an it's all good!! I'm so gutted I'm going to miss Notting Hill carnival this year though, if anyone is in London around that time you absolutely have to go, it's the highlight of the year

Honolulu, obviously!!

It's nice all year 'round. It's beautiful. Food is great, people are friendly, and it's the perfect cultural melting pot. Obviously I'm biased by coming from here. However, there's a reason when Hawaii people go to the mainland, we start every other sentence with "Well, in Hawaii, we [do it this way, yadda yadda]."

By the way, remember that "Hawaiians" and "People from Hawaii"/"Hawaii people" is a clean distinction-- the former is the ethnic group, while the latter is the residential identity. You don't call all folks from Georgia "Cherokees" right?

How disappointing. At least I can take solace in the fact that everyone from Texas is a cowboy.

From the poll, I've only been to LA and San Diego but I can't say they are my favorites.
For favorite city, Carcassonne; it's a castle like fortress and the shops are really cool too (i.e. medieval stuff and dragons). Second would be Edmonton; West Edmonton Mall is awesome.

The poll is terrible, haha Anchorage has >300k population.
I've lived in the UK all my life and I've visited some brilliant cities, and some terrible cities.

My favourite British cities are:

Edinburgh (go during the fringe & stay in a hostel)
Sheffield (Beautiful city which blew my mind after expecting it to look like it did in the Full Monty)
Lancaster (Really nice town centre, brilliant night life for it's size and it's not morecambe)
Carlisle (Where I grew up)
London (I love architecture, I love history and culture and London is superb)

Favourite foreign cities:

Venice (but only for a Day)
Bern

I have been to Paris and have never been impressed.

Edinburgh is my favourite city ever. It's just wonderful. During the fringe, there is literally nowhere that matches the awesome atmosphere.
