Overview
########
Poliwag was blessed with an amazing Speed stat, outspeeding most of the unboosted metagame. It's one of two Pokemon in the LC metagame that has access to both Hypnosis and Belly Drum, allowing it to put a Pokemon to sleep and then Belly Drum to boost its Attack dramatically. Unfortunately, Poliwag's defenses are not that great, and there are better Belly Drum users out there, specifically Zigzagoon.

Belly Drum
########
name: Belly Drum
move 1: Belly Drum
move 2: Waterfall
move 3: Hypnosis / Encore
move 4: Return / Thief
ability: Water Absorb
item: Berry Juice
evs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========
Poliwag needs to have Belly Drum as a move, otherwise it is useless. Belly Drum allows Poliwag to boost its Attack to +6. Waterfall is Poliwag's main attacking move because after a Belly Drum, very few Pokemon can take a non resisted +6 Waterfall. Hypnosis is useful for creating opportunity to get off Belly Drum, as Poliwag outspeeds the majority of the metagame. Encore can be used on Fake Out users or Water-type moves that Poliwag is immune to, creating another opportunity to set up. Return or Thief can be used as the last move. Return hits hard and provides good coverage alongside Waterfall, but the likes of Frillish and Ferroseed can easily stop it. Thief allows Poliwag to steal the opposing Pokemon's items after Poliwag loses its Berry Juice when using Belly Drum and also allows Poliwag to hit Frillish.

Set Details
========
This set is simple to use. Poliwag puts opposing Pokemon to sleep with Hypnosis, then uses Belly Drum to reach a massive Attack stat. Then, it sweeps with Waterfall and either Thief or Return. Water Absorb provides Poliwag with an immunity to Water-type attacks, giving it a few chances to switch in. Berry Juice allows Poliwag to restore HP after using Belly Drum.

Team Options
========
Poliwag loves Sticky Web support, as it allows Poliwag to outspeed its common checks, such as Elekid and Choice Scarf Chinchou. Stealth Rock support is helpful for combating Magnemite and other Sturdy + Berry Juice users who can survive a hit. As for Pokemon that support Poliwag, Magnemite can help take out Poliwag's counters such as Ferroseed and Frillish.

Other Options
########
Poliwag has access to Swift Swim, allowing it to run a Rain Dance sweeper set, but rain teams are subpar in Little Cup. Poliwag can also use Wake-Up Slap as the fourth move to hit Ferroseed, but this wakes it up from sleep in the process. Protect can also be used to help against Pokemon who are attempting to whittle down Poliwag's HP by using Fake Out and then switching. Substitute can also be used to help prevent status moves, such as Thunder Wave from Porygon, from hindering Poliwag.

Checks & Counters
########
**Lileep**: Lileep can only be 2HKOed by Wake-Up Slap while taking all the other hits.

**Chinchou**: Chinchou can cause problems, as it can KO Poliwag with an Electric-type move, resists Waterfall, and if running a RestTalk set, it does not mind Hypnosis.

**Ferroseed**: Ferroseed resists Waterfall and Return, but has a slim chance of being 2HKOed by Thief.

**Frillish**: Frillish is immune to both Waterfall and Return. It only fears Thief from Poliwag.

**Croagunk**: Croagunk is immune to Waterfall and is only 2HKOed by Return while Sludge Bomb + Vacuum Wave KOes Poliwag.

**Carvanha**: Carvanha outspeeds after a Protect and KOes with Crunch.

**Elekid**: Elekid outspeeds Poliwag and can KO it with an Electric-type move.

**Fletchling**: Fletchling has a good chance to OHKO with Acrobatics.

**Timburr**: Timburr is only 2HkOed by Waterfall while KOing back with Drain Punch.

**Fake Out + Switching**: Aipom, Mienfoo, and Meowth can switch into Poliwag after a kill and chip away damage with Fake Out.

Overview
########
- amazing speed - 19
- one of 2 mons with access to belly drum + hypnosis
- frail
- hypnosis shitty 60% accuracy
- better bellydrum sweepers

Belly Drum
########
name: Bellywag
move 1: Belly Drum
move 2: Waterfall
move 3: Encore / Hypnosis
move 4: Thief / Return
ability: Water Absorb
item: Berry Juice
evs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========
- hypnosis to put foe to sleep
- Encore Water-type move / Fake Out
- belly drum to boost attack
- waterfall for stab
- thief to steal itmes / hit ghost types
- return gives poliwag nearly perfect neutral coverage besides frillish and ferroseed

Set Details
========
- hypnosis puts the foe asleep / encore water move to set up
- belly drum to boost attack with berry juice to recover the hp loss
- sweep

Usage Tips
========
- put pawn to sleep - sucker punch will KO
- sets up on any slower mon if you can get hypnosis to hit
- sets up on scarf water attacks

Team Options
========
- sticky web lets it outspeed scarfers
- trapper (pursuit user) to catch missy, since its not effected by sticky web and speed ties poliwag
- wynaut can give poliwag free turns to hypnosis and eliminate mantye, meditite, and croagunk if used properly
- steathrocks or spikes to break sturdy mons especially magnimite

Other Options
########
- rain dance sweeper set but rain is terrible
- can use wake up slap to hit ferroseed
- protect to protect against fake out users

Checks & Counters
########
- lileep (only gets 2hkoed by Wake Up slap)
- rest talk chinchou (dont give a shit about sleep)
- croagunk (2hkoed by Return, immune to Waterfall)
- ferroseed (resists waterfall and return)
- mantyke (immune to waterfall, 2hkoed by return or thief after bellydrum)
- missy (speed ties, can wow poliwag, not a guaranteed OHKO against eviolite)
- carvanha (outspeed at +1 and koes with crunch)
- fletchling (chance to OHKO with acrobatics)
- bulky timburr can take the hit and KO back
- fake out + switching out
- trace porygon (trace waterabsob and gets immunity)
- vital spriti elekid

wake up slap can be used to hit steels hard namely pawniard and ferroseed along with bulky normals like porygon. Thief can be used to hit frillish.

Mention:

- Protect/Substitute in other options to help protect (HAH) you against Fake Out or status.
- Encore in other options to help for set up on a move that you can set up on and has 100% accuracy
- Hypnosis has 60% accuracy, which means it's unreliable. You were probably going to mention that in the write-up, anyway.
- Sets up basically on anything that doesn't OHKO it, which does include stuff like Mienfoo (no High Jump Kick) and Pawniard (no LO).
- Comparisons to other lc belly drummers, Zigzagoon and Magby, Zigzagoon has +2 priority which means it's often more reliable as a sweeper than Poliwag.
- When you say trapper for Misdreavus, make it clear that you mean Pursuit users.
- Trace Porygon is immune to Waterfall, if it traces your Water Absorb.

"- speed tie murkrow who could be immune to hypnosis". What?

QC 2/3

Edit: I added some things, oops

I meant that you should probably expand that usage tip, as you only said, "- speed tie murkrow who could be immune to hypnosis", which isn't exactly a specific usage tip. Speed tie it with Waterfall after you used Belly Drum, and hope that you either survive a LO Sucker Punch, or win the speed tie against Brave Bird, or get Thunder Waved / Hazed; is what I'm assuming you mean. Yeah, I realize that Murkrow can have Insomnia as an ability, but it has so many moves and sets that are deadly to Poliwag, perhaps the usage tip should just be that you're fucked if Murkrow is alive. For instance, Insomnia LO Murkrow is especially dangerous:

236 Atk Life Orb Murkrow Sucker Punch vs. 116 HP / 0 Def Poliwag: 21-25 (95.4 - 113.6%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
(21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 23, 23, 23, 25)

+0 Waterfall only 2HKOs Murkrow and Prankster Berry Juice Murkrow can just Thunder Wave you, Brave Bird OHKO you, Haze, etc.

Goddess Briyella

Banned deucer.
  • Return should be the first slash in the fourth moveslot, as dealing damage after setup is a lot more important than stealing items, and you won't be getting around Ferroseed either way. Waterfall also hits every Ghost-type in the tier just as hard as Thief does, with the exception of Frillish, Phantump, and Pumpkaboo (Misdreavus and Gastly are the only really important threats).
  • Magnemite should be listed in Team Options, as it makes a perfect partner for Poliwag. It resists both of Poliwag's weaknesses and also gets rid of Ferroseed and Frillish, the two main problems Poliwag can run into.
  • Elekid's ability to check Poliwag should be given a lot more emphasis, since it has a ton of specific advantages against Poliwag: it easily OHKOs it with its STAB, outspeeds it 100% of the time with a Jolly nature, and is entirely immune to Hypnosis by virtue of its Vital Spirit ability.

Good work. QC 3/3

Goddess Briyella, Thief is usually more useful for Sturdy Tirtouga and other Sturdy Rock-types like Onix.

also, macle Substitute mention! great vs. stuff like TWave Pory, allows you to easily set up on it as it always goes for TWave
