Every generation is different and the metagame is constantly changing. However there has always been and always will be threats. Whether they are defensive threats or offensive threats, every competent player should have a way to handle top-tier threats. That's where you guys come in! This project aims to gather some of the common top-tier threats in the metagame and find Pokémon that can either check or counter them.

Procedure:

1. Every round, I will nominate a Pokémon for discussion. Within one week's time, you guys will have the ability to discuss and nominate various Pokémon that you think can either check or counter the victim of the week, with a description explaining how they can do that (look at other nominations for example!).

2. After the deadline, I will choose the top three checks and the top three counters. Should there be a lot of nominations, I will discuss my choices with other skilled players to ensure the selections are not biased and that all nominations have been considered thoroughly.

3. The results will be archived and the process will continue week after week.

Rules:

Update: to avoid confusion, everyone has to post damage calcs when they're submitting their check/counter. This makes it easier for everyone to see how effective the Pokemon in question is as a check/counter.

1. When nominating your check/counter please include:
Description, set and calcs

2. Follow the definitions of checks and counters that was posted in The Smog issue #32:

Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

3. Only post sets viable in PU. Niche Pokemon such as Natu or Dusclop are totally acceptable, but bottom-of-the-barrel stuff like Slaking and Regigigas aren't. The viability ranking thread is your best friend, so if something isn't ranked there, 95% of the time it's not worth posting here.

4. From Saturday - Tuesday, each person can only nominate one Pokemon. From Wednesday to Friday, you can nominate as many as you want.

5. Help people out if you think they're wrong, but please be nice. That includes you, fagtron

6. Do be creative. Dont put shedinja either, as that is easy for specific pokemon

7. If you not sure how to format, check other examples

8. Have fun!

9. If you reserve something, you have to do it with in ~1.5 hours, or i will let someone else do that mon

Physical/Special Defense avalugg as a check

These calcs show that Avalugg is a solid check for Sneasel where even specially defensive is still 3hko'd, I wouldnt say that its a solid counter because if it has prior damage the sneasal can easily kill it before taking avalanche damage or even the occasional rocky helmet.

Physically defensive poliwrath as a counter

Easily walls everything, rests of damage, OHKOs without an issue, and sneasel can't switch in for fear of scald burns

Physically defensive Carracosta as a counter

Carracosta (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Scald
- Stone Edge
- Aqua Jet / Toxic

252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carracosta: 99-117 (28.1 - 33.2%) -- 83.7% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Low Kick (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 82-97 (23.2 - 27.5%) -- 82.1% chance to 4HKO

It can't switch in more than a few times but it's a pretty solid switch-in regardless. It can get up SR against Sneasel or just OHKO it with Stone Edge. It's also a pretty solid set in general (pun unintended but still funny), as it is also a really good answer to Tauros and is just ridiculously bulky in general.

RestTalk Throh as a counter

Throh (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Circle Throw
- Knock Off

252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Throh: 165-196 (37.1 - 44.1%) -- 100% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Low Kick (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Throh: 104-123 (23.4 - 27.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

Tho it can't switch into Icicle Crash like Poliwrath can, RestTalk Throh can come in on a Knock Off and KO with Circle Throw. It can also recover any lost health with Rest and Sleep Talk lets it not become fodder for opponents to set up.

Pignite @ Eviolite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Superpower
- Wild Charge
- Sucker Punch

252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Low Kick (80 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Pignite: 99-117 (25.8 - 30.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Pignite walls Sneasel and smacks stuff around. The only way Sneasel wins is if it Knocks Off the Eviolite, then comes back later to 2HKO with Low Kick on the switch but that scenario is difficult to pull off and by that time the recoil damage will add up. I don't actually know how good Pignite is outside of countering Sneasel but Mont and unfixable say it's good so it's probably good.

Well then,

counter

Relicanth @ Leftovers/Zoom Lens (96% accurate head smash)
Ability: Rock Head
Relaxed Nature
- Head Smash
- Stealth Rock
- Yawn
- Waterfall/Aqua Tail/Toxic

252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Low Kick (40 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Relicanth: 57-68 (14.1 - 16.8%) -- possible 9HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Relicanth: 43-52 (10.6 - 12.8%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Relicanth: 99-118 (24.5 - 29.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

This is flat-out a better counter to sneasel than Carracosta. Nothing sneasel does can dent it much, and relicanth always OHKOes back with head smash. Not to mention it has more offensive pressure than Carracosta due to the sheer power of Head Smash, even uninvested, which means few pokemon can switch into it for free.

Also, don't worry about lack of Solid Rock, because:
252 Atk Life Orb Tauros Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Relicanth: 143-169 (35.3 - 41.8%) -- 79.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

If you are going to reserve something at least post it.

New rule from this line onwards (so monferno doesnt count). If you reserve something, you have to do it with in ~1.5 hours, or i will let someone else do that mon
Sorry about that, someone else can do it - it seems that the defensive monferno set is bad and the lead set isn't meant to switch into anything.

CHECK

Luxray @ Choice Band
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Wild Charge
- Superpower
- Ice Fang
- Volt Switch

DA CHECK. This basically takes any 2 hits from Sneasel in a Pinch and can easily force it out to gain momentum with Volt Switch or just hit somehting hard. This eats SD Sneasel for Breakfast too lol.
Too lazy for calcs. Use CB Luxray

CM+RestTalk ROCK WITH EYES as a counter

Carbink @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Moonblast
- Calm Mind
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

You can simply 2HKO Sneasel with Moonblast, or you can opt to use it as setup bait. Icicle Crash fails to 3HKO Carbink from full health, even after Leftovers has been knocked off, so you can set up and let Sneasel die to LO recoil.
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carbink: 44-53 (14.4 - 17.4%) -- possible 8HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carbink: 79-95 (25.9 - 31.2%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carbink: 79-95 (25.9 - 31.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Low Kick (20 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carbink: 14-17 (4.6 - 5.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Ice Shard vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carbink: 39-47 (12.8 - 15.4%) -- possible 9HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

4 SpA Carbink Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Sneasel: 152-180 (60.5 - 71.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 4 SpA Carbink Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Sneasel: 224-266 (89.2 - 105.9%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO

Need more checks, so here is zebstrika:

Zebstrika @ Life Orb
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Overheat
- Hidden Power [Grass]
Zebstrika is a decent Pokemon in PU now every one is using fast pokes like tauros, jumpluff and sneasel. Zebstrika's base 116 lets it be the second fastest relevant Pokemon in PU (the fastest is only used on rain), meaning it can come in and revenge kill sneasel without problem. Standard set is used, as it is most effective, and overheat is used to nab the ohko on sneasel. Zebstrika does have poor bulk, but enough to tank a sneasel Ice shard. Zebstrika can also volt switch predicting a switch to gain momentum.
252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Overheat vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Sneasel: 338-400 (134.6 - 159.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Or tbolt if sneasel is weakened:
252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Sneasel: 175-208 (69.7 - 82.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
While zeb can take an ice shard:
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zebstrika: 99-118 (34 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Week one is now over:
Checks: Zebstrika (Anty) / Luxray (galbia) / Avalugg (BenOhver)
Counters: Poliwrath (Megazard Z) / Carbink (Pawou) / Carracosta (Magnemite)
If you are wondering why your Pokemon didnt get chosen, it is either to do with viability (eg pignite), or other checks where better (eg throh)
The OP will be updated shortly

Week Two:
Scyther @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Aerial Ace
- Knock Off
- Quick Attack

Similar end time

Tauros as a check

Tauros @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Climb
- Zen Headbutt
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide

Tauros can take any of Scyther's hits once, but it doesn't particularly enjoy switching into a banded U-turn, so it's better used as an offensive check. Tauros outspeeds Scyther and OHKOes with Rock Slide. Fire Blast and a Naive nature is another option to better handle Avalugg/Tangela and the like, but Rock Slide is better for the purposes of checking Scyther, as Rock Climb won't OHKO if Tauros has been knocked off.
252 Atk Choice Band Scyther U-turn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Tauros: 159-187 (54.6 - 64.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Aerial Ace vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Tauros: 204-241 (70.1 - 82.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Choice Band Scyther Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Tauros: 147-173 (50.5 - 59.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Tauros Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scyther: 556-660 (197.8 - 234.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Sheer Force Tauros Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scyther: 428-508 (152.3 - 180.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Avalugg as a check

Avalugg @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Recover
- Avalanche
- Toxic / Roar / Earthquake

Pretty simple and efficient check. Avalugg takes every possible Scyther atk without taking any significant damage even without Def investiments, with them even better, and he just oneshots him with Avalanche without EVs in atk lol, also he has a recovery so he doesn't get worn down by U-Turn momentum and can live even without Leftovers taken by Knock Off. Avalugg also has rapid spin so he can capitalize on Scyther maybe locked on a move that isn't U-Turn to get hazards off your team.

edit: Changed it to check if possible since he is 2HKO by U-Turn if he enters on Stealth Rocks as said by Texas Cloverleaf.

252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Aerial Ace vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Avalugg: 115-136 (29.2 - 34.6%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Choice Band Scyther U-turn vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Avalugg: 90-106 (22.9 - 26.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Quick Attack vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Avalugg: 51-61 (12.9 - 15.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever

252 Atk Choice Band Scyther Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Avalugg: 83-98 (21.1 - 24.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Avalugg Avalanche vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scyther: 356-420 (126.6 - 149.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Physically defensive Carracosta as a counter

Carracosta @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Scald
- Rock Slide
- Knock Off / Toxic

Physically defensive Carracosta takes very little damage from U-Turn and Knock Off and resists Aerial Ace and Quick Attack and can OHKO Scyther with Rock Slide. Carracosta can also set up hazards for its teammates if Scyther is locked into any move thats not U-Turn or use Toxic or Knock Off to handle a switch-in to Carracosta.

252 Atk Choice Band Scyther U-turn vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carracosta: 91-108 (25.8 - 30.6%) -- 1.6% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Choice Band Scyther Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carracosta: 84-99 (23.8 - 28.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Aerial Ace vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carracosta: 58-69 (16.4 - 19.6%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Quick Attack vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Carracosta: 26-31 (7.3 - 8.8%) -- possibly the worst move ever

0 Atk Carracosta Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scyther: 412-492 (146.6 - 175%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Piloswine @ Eviolite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Spear
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock

Piloswine serves as an effective counter to scyther due to the masive damage it can pose in the face of one. If scyther has prior damage or has been affected by stealth rocks, it dies immediately to ice shard.

252+ Atk Piloswine Icicle Spear (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scyther: 276-330 (98.2 - 117.4%) -- approx. 93.8% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Piloswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scyther: 146-174 (51.9 - 61.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Piloswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scyther: 146-174 (51.9 - 61.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Aerial Ace vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Eviolite Piloswine: 156-184 (38.7 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Disputing Avalugg as a counter; if SR is up, Avalugg will come in on a U-turn and be immediately forced out by the opponents response to Avalugg; having taken roughly 40-45% worth of damage. It can then no longer switch in under SR without being 2HKOed by either of Scyther's STABs (or having the same problem with U-turn). Piloswine and Carracosta are alright due to the lack of SR weaknesses making it more difficult to pressure into residual damage.

Avalugg is better suited as a check.

Stunfisk as a check:

Stunfisk @ Leftovers
Ability: Static
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Discharge
- Earth Power
- Toxic

Stunfisk can switch in without fear to Aerial Aces aimed at teammates like Roselia, Throh or Poliwrath, as Stunfisk only takes a maximum of 22% from CB Jolly Aerial Ace. Additionally, there is a 30% chance to activate paralysis on Scyther via Static, which can neuter it for the rest of the match if a cleric isn't present on the other team. During the turn Scyther switches out, you're free to use Stealth Rock or Toxic the switch in.

Scyther's hardest hitting move on Stunfisk is its U-Turn, which is a 4HKO. U-Turn still does quite a bit of damage (34% maximum) to Stunfisk. With hazards up, U-Turn continually hitting and paralysis not happening, Stunfisk can be worn down rather quickly when facing off against offensive teams, which is why I consider Stunfisk a check to Scyther and not a counter. In return, uninvested SpAtk Stunfisk does a maximum of 73% to Scyther with Discharge if it's dumb enough to stay in.

Stunfisk is also a great check because of its ability to disrupt standard volt turn cores (e.g. Scarf Raichu + Band Scyther), so it definitely has a place on slower teams that may struggle against this combo otherwise.
252 Atk Choice Band Scyther U-turn vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Stunfisk: 123-145 (29.2 - 34.4%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Aerial Ace vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Stunfisk: 79-93 (18.7 - 22%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Scyther Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Stunfisk: 113-134 (26.8 - 31.8%) -- 34.9% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Stunfisk Discharge vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Scyther: 174-206 (61.9 - 73.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Carbink eats up hits for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and supper and just boosts in Scyther's face, then Rest keep walling it

Since no one wants to list any more counters (and I don’t want to say Relicanth again), here you go.

Zapdos 2.0

Emolga
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP/ 252 Def/ 4 SpD
- Acrobatics
- Volt Switch
- Roost
- Toxic/Knock Off/Nuzzle

Physically defensive Emolga is a comprehensive wall to any Scyther form.

252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Aerial Ace vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Emolga: 96-114 (30.5 - 36.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Choice Band Technician Scyther Quick Attack vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Emolga: 86-102 (27.3 - 32.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Choice Band Scyther Knock Off vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Emolga: 93-110 (29.6 - 35%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

It can switch into any of Scyther’s moves, take a hit, and roost off the damage, EVEN IF STEALTH ROCK IS ON THE FIELD. Acrobatics is an easy 2HKO, and Volt Switch helps gain momentum.

*The ability is static to punish mindless U-turn spamming
