UU Tentacruel

QC: Bouffalant / Hikari / dodmen
GP: P Squared / Weebl

Overview
########

With a great defensive typing and excellent natural bulk, Tentacruel has carved a niche for itself as one of the best utility Pokemon in the tier. Tentacruel is one of the few Pokemon in UU that has access to both Rapid Spin and Toxic Spikes, which helps it fill a spot in almost every team archetype. Tentacruel also has a great Speed tier for a utility pokemon, along with good offensive stats that give it a solid offensive presence. Unfortunately, Tentacruel's lack of recovery leaves it very prone to being worn down.

Utility
########
name: Utility
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Toxic Spikes
move 3: Scald
move 4: Knock Off / Toxic / Sludge Bomb
ability: Liquid Ooze
item: Black Sludge
evs: 240 HP / 244 Def / 24 Spe
nature: Bold

Moves
========

Rapid Spin gets rid of entry hazards and supports its teammates. Toxic Spikes wears down the opponent's grounded Pokemon, and especially helps against bulky ones, such as Vaporeon, Chesnaught, and Swampert. Scald is a good STAB move that gives Tentacruel offensive presence and cripples physical attackers, thus complementing Tentacruel's physical bulk. Knock Off is great when paired with Toxic Spikes, as it helps by further wearing down the opponent's team and removing foe's items. Toxic helps wear down non-grounded Pokemon, which are immune to Toxic Spikes. Sludge Bomb is a secondary STAB move that helps Tentacruel beat Fairy- and Grass-types more effectively.

Set Details
========

The given EVs with a Bold nature maximize Tentacruel's physical bulk, allowing it to take on a plethora of Fire- and Fighting-types in the tier, as well as outspeeding Adamant Honchkrow. Black Sludge, Tentacruel's only method of recovery, is used over Leftovers to scare away Trick users. Liquid Ooze is the preferred ability, as it punishes Leech Seed, Giga Drain, and Drain Punch users. Liquid Ooze also allows Tentacruel to reliably beat Chesnaught, a common Spikes setter.

Usage Tips
========

Tentacruel should be brought in on weak or resisted hits to aid its team with Rapid Spin or Toxic Spikes. Even with HP and Defense investment, Tentacruel struggles with strong physical and special attacks, and as it lacks reliable recovery, it's important to keep it as healthy as possible. However, it should be brought in often if entry hazards are stacking up, as neither Tentacruel nor its teammates appreciate having to take the extra damage. In the event that Tentacruel is able to force a switch, try to set up Toxic Spikes or use Scald for a possible burn.

Team Options
========

Tentacruel appreciates Wish support; therefore, Pokemon such as Umbreon, Florges, and Aromatisse work well with it. Umbreon gets a special mention, as it has excellent synergy with Tentacruel; Tentacruel takes Fighting- and Bug-type attacks for Umbreon, while it takes Psychic-type attacks aimed at Tentacruel. Bulky Grass-types such as Shaymin work well, as they take on the Ground- and Electric-type Pokemon that give Tentacruel trouble. Pursuit trappers make for good partners, as they can trap the Psychic-types that give Tentacruel trouble. Krookodile gets a special mention here, as it can also hit the Steel- and Poison-types which are immune to Toxic—and the latter of which removes Tentacruel's Toxic Spikes. Hydreigon is a great partner for Tentacruel, as they have perfect defensive synergy together; Tentacruel resists all four of Hydreigon's weaknesses, and Hydreigon is immune to both Ground and Psychic and resists Electric. Pokemon that take advantage of Toxic Spikes are great partners for Tentacruel. Other hard-hitting Pokemon that appreciate Tentacruel's help in wearing down their grounded switch-ins, such as Mega Aerodactyl or Entei, are good partners for Tentacruel.

Other Options
########

Clear Body lets Tentacruel use Rapid Spin against Sticky Web teams without a Speed drop; however, Liquid Ooze is generally the superior option. Haze is an option to deal with setup sweepers that try to set up for free on Tentacruel. Finally, Ice Beam and Icy Wind are options to hit Dragon-types on the switch. Ice Beam hits harder, while Icy Wind offers significant utility to Tentacruel's teammates in speed control.

Checks & Counters
########

**Psychic-types**: Psychic-types such as Alakazam and Espeon take minimal damage from Scald and can threaten Tentacruel with a powerful STAB move.

**Dragon-types**: Every Dragon-type in the tier threatens Tentacruel with a strong STAB move or a boosting move, and doesn't care about Scald damage. Physical ones such as Salamence or Haxorus need a Lum Berry to avoid getting burned, though.

**Ground-types**: Most Ground-types can threaten out Tentacruel with an Earthquake. Krookodile, Nidoking, and Flygon are more dangerous as they can also outspeed Tentacruel. Swampert threatens Tentacruel and shrugs off damage from Scald.

**Electric-types**: Mega Ampharos, Heliolisk, and offensive Rotom-H threaten Tentacruel with STAB Thunderbolt and—with the exception of Rotom-H—don't care about Scald.

**Residual Damage**: Tentacruel lacks reliable recovery, so it has issues with being worn down by burn damage and other residual damage.

Your EV spread has extra EVs. I'm assuming you meant 240 HP / 244 Def / 24 Spe ?

Sludge Bomb seems better to me than Acid Spray. 30% chance of poisoning the opponent and hits hard than Acid Spray even after the Sdef drop. Acid Spray is so weak Slurpuff can setup Belly Drum on Tentacruel after SR damage.

Pokemon that appreciate toxic spikes are great partners with Tentacruel. Jirachi appreciates toxic spikes since it allows it to do huge damage with Iron Head + Toxic Spikes. Ground types, such as Krookodile and Nidoqueen, can hit both Steel and Poison types with a powerful ground STAB and force toxic damage onto the other team. Other hard-hitting pokemon that appreciate their grounded switchins being worn down, such Entei or Mega Aerodactyl, also make great teammates.
Tentacruel + Nidoqueen seems a little bit redundant.

Add Ice Beam and Icy Wind in OO. Coverage against Dragons and the latter slow down possible switch ins.

OK I added Sludge Bomb in place of Acid Spray, removed Nidoqueen from possible teammates and added Ice Beam and Icy Wind to OO. Should be good for a second QC check.

For Moves, give a few examples of Pokemon that Toxic Spikes are really good against - my favorites are Vaporeon and Arcanine but you can put whatever you want. And for Toxic, specify that it only hits *non-grounded* immunities to Toxic Spikes like Hydreigon, since it still won't affect Steels and Poisons.

Set Details should say specifically that Defense investment is used (rather than SpDef) to better handle the Fire- and Fighting-types of the tier, since that's what its typing is meant to do. In Team Options in the first line, you need to say Wish support (cleric support means only Aromatherapy and Heal Bell).

Instead of saying "Jirachi can use Toxic Spikes..." you should say "can take advantage of Toxic Spikes" ("use" implies it has access to the move). The next sentence should read: Ground-types, such as Krookodile, can use their powerful STAB attacks to hit grounded Steel- and Poison- types, both of which are immune to Toxic and the latter of which can absorb Tentacruel's Toxic Spikes. (Might need changes from GP but that's the idea of what the sentence should say.)

Well done, gonna stamp after these are implemented.

Edit: 3/3

OK, those changes should be implemented. I added Vaporeon, Chesnaught and Swampert to the Toxic Spikes section of Moves as pokemon that Toxic Spikes help to wear down.

With a great defensive typing and excellent natural bulk both on the physical and special side of the spectrum ('spectrum' is discouraged; there is no middle ground), Tentacruel has solidified itself as one of the best overall utility Pokemon in the tier. Tentacruel is one of the few Pokemon in UU that has access to both Rapid Spin and Toxic Spikes, which helps it fill a spot in almost every team archetype. Rapid Spin is mandatory on Tentacruel, getting rid of entry hazards and supporting its teammates. Toxic Spikes serves as a very nice utility move, wearing down the opponent's grounded Pokemon. Toxic Spikes especially helps against bulky Pokemon that are easily (or something? 'bulky Pokemon that lack reliable recovery' or whatever makes the most sense... it sounds strange to just have 'worn down' here) worn down, such as Vaporeon, Chesnaught, (comma) and Swampert. Scald is a good STAB move that gives it Tentacruel offensive presence and has a chance to burn, which helps with Tentacruel's physical bulk. Knock Off is great when paired with Toxic Spikes, (comma) as it helps to wear down the opponent's team and get rid of items. Toxic helps wear down non-grounded Pokemon which that can avoid Toxic Spikes. Sludge Bomb is a secondary STAB move that helps Tentacruel beat Fairies and Grass-types more effectively.

Usage Tips

Tentacruel should be brought in on weak or resisted hits to aid its team with Rapid Spin or Toxic Spikes. Even with HP and Defense investment, Tentacruel struggles with strong physical and special attacks from either spectrum (again, no spectrum. if you want to maintain the message you can add 'physical and special' where I put it, but eh), and without as it lacks reliable recovery, it's important to keep it as healthy as possible. However, it should be brought in often if entry in the case of hazards are stacking up, as neither Tentacruel nor its teammates appreciate the extra damage. In the event that Tentacruel is able to force a switch, try to set up Toxic Spikes or use Scald for a possible burn.

Bulky Grass-types, such as Celebi, work well, (comma) as they take on the Ground- and Electric-type Pokemon that give Tentacruel trouble. Celebi is deserves a special mention, (comma) as it resists all three of Tentacruel's weaknesses and Tentacruel can take Fire- and Bug-type attacks for Celebi. Pursuit trappers make for good partners, since as they can trap the Psychic-types that give Tentacruel trouble. Hydreigon is a great partner with for Tentacruel, as they have perfect synergy; Tentacruel resists all four of Hydreigon's weaknesses are resisted by Tentacruel (passive), and Hydreigon is immune to both Ground and Psychic and resists Electric. Pokemon that can abuse Toxic Spikes are great partners with for Tentacruel. Jirachi can take advantage of Toxic Spikes to wear down the opponent with flinches and residual damage. Ground-types, such as Krookodile, can hit both Steel- and Poison-types, both of which are immune to Toxic and the latter of which can absorb Tentacruel's Toxic Spikes. Ice Beam hits harder, while Icy Wind offers significant utility to Tentacruel's teammates in speed control (this is correct btw; it should be lowercase. idk, a lot of people get that wrong).

**Psychic-types**: Psychic-types such as Celebi, Alakazam, (comma) and Starmie take minimal damage from Scald and can threaten Tentacruel with a powerful STAB move and take minimal damage from Scald (subjective but i feel like it fits better before).

**Dragon-types**: Every Dragon-type in the tier threatens Tentacruel out with a strong move or a boosting setup move, and doesn't care about Scald damage.

**Ground-types**: Most Ground-types can threaten out Tentacruel with an Earthquake, with Krookodile, Nidoking, (comma) and Flygon outspeeding Tentacruel as well. Swampert threatens it and shrugs off damage from Scald.

Yeah sorry I've been busy with exams, I was planning to finish this one tonight/tomorrow, I can finish it tonight.

alright finally implemented these changes (after a full month lol). ready for a 2nd GP check.
edit: also removed celebi + raikou mentions because rip

Swampert threatens it Tentacruel and shrugs off damage from Scald.

**Electric-types**: Mega Ampharos, Heliolisk,(add comma) and offensive Rotom-H threaten Tentacruel with Thunderbolt and,(remove comma + add dash) with the exception of Rotom-H,(remove comma + add dash) don't care about Scald.

**Residual Damage**: Tentacruel lacks reliable recovery, so it has issues with being worn down by burn damage or and other residual damage.

GP 2/2

Worked over Queez's amcheck and talked to him about it on PS!
Minor fix in Moves: "Rapid Spin gets rid of entry hazards and supporting supports its teammates."

No worries.

I'd completely forgot about this since LiberalLucario went AWOL on me :o I made all of the changes for him as well as adding some of my own, but since it's been so long and there were so many things, I'd rather have another GP checker give it a third check. Goddess Briyella , if you aren't busy could you look over this? Otherwise I'll post on the GP Queue thread. Thanks in advance.

I've looked over it thoroughly and it's fine to be uploaded as far as GP is concerned.

Excellent, thank you! Any other change that might be needed can be taken care of via SCMS anyway, so I'm just gonna upload it.
