The Rainbow League

*By Andrew

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Then, God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them.
To differenciate them, He created the colors, 8 colors for 8 Nations. Afterwards, God got bored as shit and left the World for a better place.

Without God, the 8 Nations started to skin themselves alive. To put an end to this madness, the 8 Nations decided to institute the Rainbow League.
By fighting in the Rainbow League, the Nations would decide which Nation would be the strongest, with (almost) no bloodshed. For this, each Nation would need to select a Champion, and send him to the Rainbow League, where he would fight the other Champions.
The winner of the Rainbow League is the Rainbow Champion, and since God left this world, he would be considered by all the Nations, as the one and only true God."

Sega Genesis 1.0 beta

Yesterday, the Rainbow Champion died (or got bored as shit).
YOU, are a citizen who decided to stand up, and fight for the right to be the one and only, Rainbow Champion.
First, you'll have to prove that you deserve to be the Champion of your Nation. Then, you'll have to fight the other Champions, in order to claim the title of Rainbow Champion.
So fight, fight for your color, fight for your Nation, fight for your family, your friends and your Pikachu, fight for those who can't fight themselves, or simply, fight to show that you're the shit.

The 8 Color Nations :

Red Star

The most ferocious of the 8 Nations. Its citizens are all fierce brawlers who have a really simple vision of the world around them : There are two kinds of people, the dominant, and the dominated. The previous champion was from Red Star, so you can tell that they are looking to assure their domination over the other nations.

Blue Moon

The most developed Nation, in terms of economy, or science. It is definitely where you'd live if you're looking for comfort. Its citizens are knowledgeable and peaceful people, but they also feel like the burden of educating the other Nations lie on their shoulders. They maintain a cold rivalry with Red Star, as the way they see the world is diametrically opposite.

Yellow Comet

This Nation is the poorest in terms of natural ressources, yet, it's also the second most developed Nation, technology wise. They live in an immense desert, and are very proud of their ability to survive in so inhospitable an evironment. The engineers of the Yellow Comet are able to do more with less, no one should undervalue their ingenuity.

Green Earth

The people of the forest, as the other Nations love to call them. Living in the biggest forest of the world, they are in total harmony with Nature. They consider themselves as the true heirs of Mother Nature. Their ability to survive in such a wild world is a proof of the rough strength of the Green Earth nation.

Brown Field

The richest nation in terms of natural ressources. The Brown citizens are farmers most of the time. Their life is usually really simple : receive what your parents left, and work all your heart to build up an even better property for your children to inherit. Threaten what their line built over time, and they will defend it with a fury that you would never expect.

Purple Sky

The mystical Purple Nation. Simply alluding to the name of this Nation would strike fear into the hearts of most people. They are few, but are known as dangerous, and pernicious. Citizens of the Purple Nation are supposed to possess magic powers. Remember your mom's words : "You better eat all your meal, or you might become the new victim of a Purple malediction".

Pink Ozone

The rivals of the Purple Nation. These two Nations fought for years, and share a real aversion to each other.
The Pink Nation always criticized the Purple cult of mystical energies, and fight for the good ! Or so they say...

Gray Galaxy

The mines of the Gray Nation are a ressources that every other Nation would love to obtain. See, steel and iron are two rare ressources among the Nations, and the Gray Galaxy has a total control over this market. The strong minors of the Gray Nations are not fighters to be underestimated.

The 2 Man-made Nations

Black Hole

The war between the Pink and the Purple Nations generated a wasteland, made of the territories claimed over and over by the two Nations. In the end, a new bastard Nation was created : the Black Hole. Its citizens are creepy and ruthless, used to the life in the hell of a battlefield.

White Constellation

The citizens of the White Nations believe that they are supposed to spread the good Word. Anybody can become a citizen of this nomad Nation. As long as you believe that God is still here, somewhere, you'll have the right to claim your affiliation to the Holy Nation.

Tournament Specific Rules & proceedings

- There will be 64 entrants, and ONLY 64 (we'll find a way). I'll be really strict on the activity, and sub out anybody inactive really fast, so if you think that you can idle the first rounds, you're dead wrong. I may handpick the players.
- Every player will be randomly given a color, and will have to use pokemons belonging to this color. HERE is the color pokedex.
- You can use a Mega Evolution/alternate form, regardless of its color, as long as the normal form belongs to your color. For instance, if you belong to the Red Nation and use Charizard, then you don't break any rule by playing Charizard-X.
- If you're caught using pokemons of another color, you instantly lose the battle.
- You HAVE TO have a "mascot". Thats is to say a Pokémon belonging to your color that you will keep the whole tournament. For instance, Ash is a player of the Yellow nation and chose Pikachu as mascot. Thus, he'll have to play Pikachu at every game !
*You can break this rule if you betray your Nation in the Finals*

The tournament will have two main phases :

Phase 1) All the citizens of a Nation will fight in a single elimination bracket. In the end, the winner of this bracket will be the Nation's Champion.

Phase 2) The 8 Champions will fight in a single elimination bracket. To attempt to balance the disparities between the Colors, the startup Bracket will be as follow :
Green Champion Vs. Yellow Champion
Purple Champion Vs. Pink Champion
Grey Champion Vs. Brown Champion
Red Champion Vs. Blue Champion

The winner of each of these 4 battles, will be granted the power to use the pokemons belonging to the Color Nation he defeated.
On top of that, the winner between the Green and the Yellow Nation will rally the White Nation to his cause. And the winner between the Purple and the Pink Nation will rally the Black Nation to his cause.

The semi-finals will have a similar rule : The winner of a semi-final will be granted the power to SECRETLY drop his main Color (and thus, isn't bound anymore to use any mascot), in exchange of the main Color belonging to the Champion he defeated.

General Rules

General Tournament Guidelines apply (http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/tournament-rules-and-general-guidelines.3486049/).

Three things :

- I decided that the Finals would be a BO3, I feel like it suits better a tournament's finals.

- One word about the betrayal clause. You can change your main color for the one that you fought the previous round (you can't do this in the middle of the BO3 though!). For instance, FLCL could choose to betray the Yellow nation (his main color) and opt to fight for the Purple Nation (Lockheed's main color). It doesn't have any effect over the other colors that FLCL is allowed to play (which means that he'd still be allowed to play the White, and the Green Pokémons).

- pokebasket , if you want to get it done, get it done quickly, after Friday I won't accept your participation as valid anymore.

GL!

Hope you can do your match McMeghan and pokebasket! rooting for the chocolate prince to win the tour.

Lost semifinals vs McMeghan in a great game, very much closer than I could imagine xD

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-ou-46420

Blue is absolutely the best region, and if you mix it with Red, it's amazing and impossible to beat. My matchup was so awful that I don't know how I could lose just 1-0 xDD

Well, GG McM, good luck in finals and also GL to FLCL .

Finally, thanks and sorry, Reymedy , for being such a john, but I had troubles these weeks so I couldn't be online so much :s Thanks for hosting a really interesting tourney ;)

I appreciate your praise, but at the same time everytime I read comments blaming the matchups and such, it saddens me a lot.
Do you realise that you brought a team with only 1 water resistances (and ton of weaknesses) and in the end, it still was a very close one. I mean, it was up to you to find that little extra clutch set to turn the game around. With an AV Conkeldurr instead of, say, Excadrill, you probably would have won ! Actually MCM was prepared for the Sand Exca, and he got you on this one. I feel like it's really a bad move to blame the "matchup" when actually, you had all the cards on your hand, and simply needed to play them right.
Just like Lockheed, FLCL saw the Gliscor coming and he came up with Breloom Bulk Up, a good read from Lockheed would have been to play Acrobatics. You didn't, and that's your fault in a way.

As I said, it saddens me a lot when you blame the colors and such, when these kind of gimmicky tournaments allow you to innovate a lot (just like John and his Natural Gift Talon, or an amazing DD Aerial Ace Ttar I saw earlier in the tournament).
As long as you had fun though, that's cool, but I think it's really easy to admit that FLCL didn't have the best color, yet managed to bring the good teams for the good opponent, and got rewarded for that.

With this said, can't wait for the Finals to happen ! Let's see who will dare betray his Nation

Hold on dude, I didn't blame my color, just my matchup, which was completly in my responsibility. I had build another team, which would have a better matchup, I was just sad I did not choose that one. I don't think in this round any nation had an advantage, not even a small one. Everything was balanced fine, I just brought the wrong team.
That's also where I have to give credit to Reymedy for choosing the color-matchups in the Quarters, if you did it on purpose, which I totally expect. Because I haven't had the feeling there is a matchup where one nation shits on another, even though there might be small advantages. And I don't really feel like the Brown vs Grey Matchup was totally unwinnable, just gotta bring some innovations like most players did. From what I've seen, F.E.A.R. Aggron kinda recks Brown, just for example. And hell, who expects that?!

Well gonna say now, what i wanted to say after the Tour; At first huge probs to the host, even though I tend to be a difficult person (xd), I had huge fun, especially with all the wonderful art and background stories. Not sure if I would've put such effort in the tour, or even considered participating, if the layout just hadn't been that beautiful!
To the mode itself; It's all just about preparation. Just counterteaming and putting affort into that. That's also the reason average players like me have a chance at getting a good result, just because preparation make 70% of the whole mode I feel like. :')

tl;dr FLCL to win it all ^,^

FLCL

Agree with Reymedy on the matchups also. I think an underrated aspect of the tour is that you not only have to get inside your opponent's head during the games, but in teambuilding, too, and consider all the possibilities for sets that they see. Really a challenge that you don't see to such an extent in other tours. I don't like to comment this much about tournaments but this was a really good one and Reymedy did an excellent job hosting it; I was glad to be able to help with it.

I agree that there's a lot of matchup problems but i'm sure YABO would agree there was no fucking way Gray was beating Brown

Well, I agree with you, Reymedy , I could have built a better team, but the fact was that without Excadrill, any of his boosters would have easily swept me. Furthermore, I didn't bring Conkel because I was afraid of Talonflame. I complained about matchup but I know it was my fault building the team. Anyway, I said that Blue + Red had more useful pokes which threatened my team a lot.

But well, despite all of these things, I am proud of my tourney because I think I built a really good brown team for the first rounds, and I almost beat BossMeghan xD

I think I'll post my first team in a while, and I think the 8 champions should do it.

Have some Coba Berry Conkeldurr pokebasket :D
Choice Band 252+ Brave Bird vs. 248HP 8Def Conkeldurr: 59-69.7%
even +2 Sharp Beak has only a 1 in 16 chance to OHKO this!

and give something in return:
252+ Thunder Punch vs. 0/0 Talonflame 84.1-99.6% OHKO after recoil (also good vs Gyarados, if he brought that monster)
or even more hilarious:
252+ Rock Tomb vs. 0/0 Talonflame 136-160.2% (speed drops help against every other setup sweeper as well)

lesson to be learned: get more crazy with your counter sets in believe in them. It might be worth to endure a bit of trouble or stay when your opponent thinks you are a goner.
