Teambuilding Process

I really love the dual offensive Lando and Thundy core. They are both powerful, able to defeat each others checks

The team was really weak to Ice, so decided to add Mega Scizor, as he is also a great set up sweeper, and bulky offensive mon in general, stopping Fakespeeders in there tracks

Team was weak to fire, and needed a Special Defense tank. So chose T-Tar, as he can stop things like MegaZard Y on the switch in, and Belly Drum Talonflame. Also is my rock setter.

I needed a check to the omnipresent setup sweepers in the metagame, and Sableye fits the bill perfectly. I also chose him as he is immune to Normal (something that is valued in this STABmons)

I finally chose Aegislash as it is a very great mon in the metagame. He is a nice check to Mega Scizor, and another great check to normal types (just because)

This is the team. I didn't really have any changes in the team, besides movepool changes.

Landorus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force

Landorus is a major threat. I personally love the all out attacker set with Life Orb, as Sheer Force negates the recoil damage while also giving the boost of the Life Orb and the moves that have secondary effects. It is fairly simple, Earth power for STAB dealing heavily amount of damage against mons like Mega Scizor, and Azumarill. Hurricane is another powerful STAB option, being able to hit the things that are immune to ground such as other Landorus or Charizard. Oblivion Wing is there for recovery, so Lando doesn't become to passive, and is a safer option compared to Hurricane, especially under Sun and Sand. Focus Blast is to heat things like Ferrothorn and Chansey super effectively.

Thundurus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

- Nasty Plot

Thundurus is another pokemon you should watch for, having access to the coveted ability in Prankster, aswell as having great offensive stats. The NP, T-Wave + 2 Attack set is one of the best in my opinion. Thunderbolt is his best special electric STAB option, and is mandatory. Oblivion Wing is again a great option for recovery, while also dealing a lot of damage since it has STAB. Thunderwave is a great tool for crippling set up sweepers since it has priority. Nasty Plot is it's best setup move giving an automatic +2 SpA raise.

Sableye @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe

- Foul Play

One of the best mons in STABmons in my opinion. Sableye's ability to control the tide of the battle is simply amazing. Also having access to Prankster, Sableye's new movepool is great with options like Dark Void to cause priority sleeping. Also having Topsy-Turvy to inverse the boosted stats of a setup sweeper, and Parting Shot to gain momentum and cripple mons, allowing your own mons to come in safely. Foul Play is there to hit the opposing mon, and not just be a sitting duck when taunted. I invested everything in defense, as I usually would like to face physical sweepers with him, as most of them are normal type.

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite

EVs: 168 HP / 252 Atk / 88 Spe

Fairly standard set. Mega Scizor is one of the best setup sweepers, if not the best in STABmons. It gets access to two great steel moves in Shift Gear and Gear Grind. Bug Bite is there for STAB, dealing a nice 135 power. Brick Break is to hit Steel types and Normal types super effective. 88 speed is to outspeed 206 speed initially. Putting the rest in Atk and HP, making him more Bulky surviving a surprise amount of pokemon.

Tyranitar @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 108 Atk / 148 SpD

- Diamond Storm

Tyranitar is a great bulky offensive mon, with Sandstorm boasting his SpD to amazing levels. Stealth Rocks is there for obvious reasons. Knock off is a great utility move, having great power and use. Pursuit is nice to trap mons like Lati@s and Aegislash on the switch outs. Diamond Storm is it's powerful Rock STAB move, having a 50% chance to raise it's defense. I invested this much in SpD so he can take a Focus Blast from Thundurus in sand.

Ability: Stance Change
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 168 HP / 252 SpA / 88 Spe
Modest Nature

Aegislash is a really good mon. In STABmons, it has access to Doom Desire, a 150 bp move that deals the damage the turn after it was used. Once used, it can make great use of King Shield to wait for the attack to hit. Shadow Ball is a nice STAB move, to hit Mega Scizor and Heatran. HP Ice is specifically for Landorus, Thundurus and Gliscor. 88 speed is placed to hit 178 speed. Leftovers is used for longevity.

Threats to Team

Opposing Landorus's can be a trouble for the team. Contemplating if I should run HP Ice on Thundurus as well.

MegaZard Y can be a problem aswell if Tyranitar is no longer present, or sun is up when facing it with Tyranitar.

Shell Smash Azumarill can also be a challenge if they have Knock Off for Aegislash, or Aqua Jet for Sableye

Mega Scizor with Knock Off and Bullet Punch can be a problem

ScarfTran can easily make a dent in the team

I've read two different things and I'm not sure which is accurate.

Marriland.com says: "Damage is calculated at the time the move hits the final target instead of when the move is first used."

Bulbapedia says: "Doom Desire will do damage against the target, using the Attack stat of the user and Defense stat of the target at the time of use (not at the time the attack actually hits; if the target is switched out, the attack will hit its replacement)."


I know those Bulbapedia mechanics are from Gen III and that Doom Desire damage is now calculated based upon the special defense stat of the mon hit, as opposed to the mon targeted. I am just curious how this works exactly, especially with Stance Change.

Mystery solved. Blade forme Doom Desire did more than Shield. This is relevant and worth posting in the STABmons thread as well.

Funbot28 Double genie is a great STABmons archetype, because like you said, they are awesome at breaking down each other's checks and have the power to blow through a lot of teams without dedicated special walls or Ice priority. Here are my thoughts.

The Landorus-I set is fairly standard. Ground+Flying is superb dual STAB so running 3 STAB moves is forgivable in this case, especially since one of them recovers HP while also having perfect accuracy for when you need your Flying attack to land.

Thundurus-I is standard-ish also but a little outdated. Twave is a great stop to sweepers and can even let Thundurus spook rivals like Aerodactyl, who hate getting paralyzed. However, you don't have Taunt on this team, which is a deterrent prior to setup, and Sableye already carries Topsy, which is a stop to setup once it gets going. So I'd -Twave and +Taunt. This lets you break down Chansey no sweat since all she can do is Seismic Toss if she has it while you just gobble up HP with Oblivion Wing and spam Nasty Plot. Taunt also shuts down Sableye, a comment I'll expand on later.

Yeah this little devil is good. The set looks fine. I've run Knock Off over Foul Play, but Tyranitar has it so that's fine. I prefer WOW myself to Dark Void, but that's personal preference. I just think burns are more detrimental in the long run versus sleep and a lot of this metagame runs on physical setup. However, PS is a pseudo mixed burn, and gets you important momentum after you sleep something.

My biggest beef with this team is with your Scizor. I'm not a fan of Bug on the mega forme, mainly because it has horrible coverage with Steel and even resisted Gear Grinds will often still 2HKO targets, making it the preferred STAB move to carry. One of its biggest checks, Heatran, resists both STABs times four. Aegislash, defensive Gyarados, and Skarmory can also switch into this and then status, phaze, or attack you. In Aegislash's case, it can even setup.

You mention taking advantage of its great bulk and resistances, but I see you don't have Roost. I highly recommend Roost on most Mega Scizors so you can turn the tide on would-be checks and setup on them instead. I'd -Bug Bite and -Brick Break and +Roost and +Knock Off. Steel/Dark is only resisted by Mega Gyarados and Azumarill in the S/A rank mons. However, Mega Scizor's goal is to setup and recover, setup and recover, until it can overwhelm the opponent with hugely powerful Gear Grinds. Without Roost it loses longevity, one of the biggest reasons it's an S-rank mon.

I really like Double Dark/Diamond Storm/Rocks Ttar myself, so this looks good. I've run Sucker Punch over Knock Off, and you might consider it now that Scizor has Koff, but the STAB power of that attack coming from Ttar is just so spammable. Pursuit is underrated in the metagame and lets you catch lots of stuff (like you mentioned) on the run.

Good set but Hidden Power Ice is not super important for those threats you listed. Here's why. Landorus-T and Gliscor are setup bait for your bulky Mega Scizor and Doom Desire already does a number to them. Thundurus takes a fair amount from Shadow Ball and you can get in Ttar to wrestle with it so long as you're confident it won't Focus Blast on the switch. Landorus-I is a threat, but Ground/Flying is resisted by your Thundurus, who outspeeds and can siphon it down with Oblivion Wing faster than it can to you.

I know you have a small Speed investment, but you might consider going mixed and running -HP Ice for +Sacred Sword. Scrappymons Kangaskhan and Stoutland look troublesome for this team and Aegislash is your biggest sitting duck versus them, so as they hit Belly Drum and activate Sitrus Berry, +112 Atk is all you need for Sacred Sword to KO at 75% health. Sacred Sword also gives you a hit on incoming ScarfTran. You already have two strong Special attackers, so shifting Aegi toward the physical spectrum isn't a huge loss since Doom Desire will still do tons of damage. To take advantage of the physical investment, you might even consider -Shadow Ball for +Shadow Sneak or +Shadow Force. You lack a damaging priority attack right now, so Sneak can snipe some threats for you if Sableye is down. Shadow Force is really strong with the drawback of that charge turn. However, it's unblockable (like Doom Desire) and tends to lure Normal-types, for which you now have Sacred Sword. A new spread with the Attack investment looks like 248 HP / 112 Atk / 148 SAtk, Brave.

Now, as a whole, there are a few things this team still lacks. You have no status absorber and sleep is pretty common. You also lack a Parting Shot absorber. Basically, nothing on your team wants to switch into Sableye. This is all the more reason to carry Taunt on Thundurus, since at team preview if you see Sableye, a lead nine times out of ten, you can lead with your own Thundy. Unfortunately, an offensive sleeper like Darkrai or Weavile has the potential to rip through a lot of the team. Your best bet would be to fodder something and try to sleep them with your own Sableye or bring in Scizor to tank a hit, set up Shift Gear, and then Gear Grind. You also lack hazard control, but with recovery on 3 of your mons and Leftovers on the other 3, this is not too bad.

A Magic Bouncer would solve a lot of those issues, so if they become overbearing, you could swap the mega slot between Scizor and Sableye. Regular Scizor is very similar to the mega but misses out on a lot of bulk. Leftovers or a Choice Band are good on it, and then you can bring back your Bug attack. If you ran a Band, I'd do Gear Grind / U-turn / Knock Off / Bullet Punch or Superpower. Sableye can almost keep the same set, as you can use regular Sableye until you need a bouncer, but to try something else I like WOW / Knock Off / Recover / Parting Shot, or if you want to set up, Calm Mind / Recover / WOW / Night Daze or Snarl. This leaves you a little more vulnerable to setup, in which case keeping Thunder Wave on Thundurus and adding Sucker Punch to Ttar and Bullet Punch to Banded Scizor are not bad ideas.
