Hannibal

One of the most fascinating literary characters comes to life on television for the first time: psychiatrist-turned-serial-killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In this new drama from Bryan Fuller, based on the characters from Thomas Harris' classic novels, we see where this incredible story began.
Hannibal is a TV series on NBC that first aired on April 4th. It's three episodes in so far, and I have to say that I've particularly enjoyed them. Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, The Hunt) plays the titular character, Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist who assists Special Investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) with a particularly intriguing case. Elements of the show are adapted from the novel Red Dragon, which takes place immediately before the events of The Silence of the Lambs. Although it is not a strict prequel to the novel, in terms of continuity, it chronologically occurs before Red Dragon, and focuses more on the budding relationship between Hannibal and Will.

I find the show to be brilliant in its pacing, character development, and performances from the main cast. Lawrence Fishburne (from the Matrix triology) plays Jack Crawford while Lara Jean Chorostecki portrays and excellent Freddie Lounds, who is female in this adaptation and is as off-puttingly parasitic as ever. Mikkelsen in particular does an amazing job of playing Hannibal, and exudes the same atmosphere as Anthony Hopkins did with the character.

A warning to the squeamish - this show can get incredibly graphic, and has quite a few disturbing dream sequences as well as gore and several disgustingly demented crimes.

So, how about it? Does anybody keep up with the show, or plan to start watching it? The next episode airs on Thursday, at 9:00 EST on NBC.

Oh, and happy 2k to me, I guess.

I was keeping up with it. Ya know. Until Fuller and NBC pulled the 4th episode and decided to air episode 5 instead because of utter bullshit and contrived reasons.

Edit: Mads is a fucking awesome Lector regardless.

I can understand wanting to pull a violent episode because of recent tragedies, but it's not like the 4th episode features a serial killer setting off a bomb in Boston. Plus, the show is already incredibly graphic - I really don't understand why there was so much trepidation about the episode.

For those who don't know, the fourth episode, which was going to feature a serial killer who convinced children to kill other children, was pulled from the air because of the Sandy Hook shootings and the Boston bombings. It'll still air internationally a few days after this week's episode, though.

It's such a shame too, because shit like that seriously destroys any semblance of continuity which is what this show is about. It's not some criminal minds procedural. Ratings will likely drop and the show will get canned. Just like every other Fuller show.

If you want to watch it, wait a week or so and download episode 4 then watch 5 and 6 which will be out by then. I think the rest of the world is a week being USA?

From what I've seen on Reddit, there's actually extremely little loss of continuity caused by skipping episode 4, although we might miss out on references and subtleties.

Episode 5 (the next episode to air in North America) will be on the 25th and episode 4 will be released on the 30th.

Well, Season 2 started last night so if there are people actually interested in this show on Smogon, here's the place to discuss. Thread didn't get a whole lot of traction last season but I'm hoping the fanbase has built up a little bit.

and we're back, folks. not sure if anyone else is actually watching this show (since this thread has mostly been dead despite my attempts to resuscitate it)

i've been a little delayed in watching the season 3 premiere, so i just finished it a few minutes ago
