Ferroseed

ferroseed.gif

Why doesn't it spin anymore? :(

[OVERVIEW]

Ferroseed has unique defensive typing that gives it nine resistances and one immunity, as well as great defenses, backed by Eviolite, to complement them, allowing it to check a multitude of threats in NU such as Samurott, Kabutops, and Ludicolo. Ferroseed also serves as a reliable entry hazard setter thanks to its typing and access to both Spikes and Stealth Rock. Ferroseed's ability, Iron Barbs, allows it to punish physical attackers such as Scyther and Barabaracle. Its low Speed also works in its favor, powering up Gyro Ball against fast threats. However, Ferroseed has a crippling 4x weakness to common Fire-type moves as well as a 2x weakness to Fighting. Both of these weaknesses make Ferroseed easy to lure, as many Pokemon have access to Fire- and Fighting-type coverage. Ferroseed also relies on Leech Seed to recover from damage, which hinders its walling capabilities. Its STAB types are also commonly resisted, allowing many Pokemon to take advantage of it, most notably Substitute users.

Moves
========

Spikes gets chip damage against any grounded Pokemon that switches in. Stealth Rock is an alternative if no other teammate carries the move. Gyro Ball, combined with Ferroseed's abysmal Speed that ensures that it is almost always fully powered, makes up for its lacking offensive presence. Knock Off cripples any switch-ins by removing their item. Leech Seed is Ferroseed's only form of recovery and pressures Pokemon to switch out. Protect, when used along with Leech Seed, lets Ferroseed wear down its foes and recover even more HP, as well as help scout for moves against Choice-locked foes. Thunder Wave cripples fast threats such as Pyroar, Sawk, and Magmortar, but do not use it with Gyro Ball, as lowering the Speed of opposing Pokemon powers down the move. Toxic hits Grass-types and stalls out opponents along with Leech Seed.

Set Details
========

The given EV spread increases Ferroseed's physical bulk and allows Ferroseed to avoid the 3HKO from Life Orb Samurott's Ice Beam. A Relaxed nature should be used with Gyro Ball to increase its power, but if Knock Off is being run, Impish should be used instead. Eviolite boosts Ferroseed's defenses significantly, making it very hard to take down. A specially defensive spread is an alternative if the team needs a more reliable answer to specially offensive Water- and Grass-types, but this makes Ferroseed less effectively wall physical attackers such as Kangaskhan and Swords Dance Samurott.

Usage Tips
========

Set up either Spikes or Stealth Rock against Pokemon that cannot do much in return, such as Kabutops, Lanturn, and Uxie, or on forced switches. Use Leech Seed to keep Ferroseed healthy and to deter Pokemon that try to set up. Sometimes it is best to use Leech Seed again expecting a switch to get more HP back and chip damage against the foe. Protect is good for scouting for Pokemon that try to lure Ferroseed, such as Hidden Power Fire Samurott or Superpower Kabutops, and should be used to gain more Leech Seed recovery. Try not to use the move too much, as the opponent will take advantage of that by setting up on the turn Ferroseed uses Protect. Protect also helps against Choice-locked attackers by scouting for what move the Pokemon will lock itself into. If using Thunder Wave, use it to cripple fast Pokemon such as Sneasel and Archeops. Thunder Wave is also useful against rain teams, as Ferroseed is able to switch in on the majority of rain sweepers and slow them down.

Team Options
========

Due to Ferroseed's exploitable Fire weakness, it is generally best to pair it up with Water-types such as Lanturn, Prinplup, Quagsire, and Carracosta. All of these Pokemon are able to switch in on Fire-types such as Pyroar and Magmortar and threaten them with their STAB moves. Ferroseed can also run Spikes over Stealth Rock if paired with Carracosta or Prinplup. More offensively inclined Water-types such as Samurott and Kabutops also pair well with Ferroseed, if using it on balance teams. Ground-types such as Stunfisk, Rhydon, and Golurk pair well with Ferroseed, as they have good synergy, with Ferroseed covering their Water- and Grass-type weaknesses. All of these Pokemon are also capable of running Stealth Rock, allowing Ferroseed to run Spikes. Having a Ghost-type such as Mismagius, Rotom, or Haunter to spinblock is also very helpful for Ferroseed. Colbur Berry Mismagius can also switch in on Sawk, which easily breaks past Ferroseed with its Fighting-type moves. Mismagius and Haunter also have access to Taunt to prevent Pokemon from using Defog. All of these Pokemon also threaten Xatu, which switches in on Ferroseed with impunity. Sneasel is another good partner for Ferroseed, as it threatens Xatu with its typing and STAB moves.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Seed Bomb and Bullet Seed are alternatives to hit Water-types such as Kabutops, Carracosta, and Samurott, but generally this leaves Ferroseed as setup bait for many Pokemon.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Xatu**: Xatu switches in on any of Ferroseed's attacks and bounces back any entry hazard-setting attempt, while in return Xatu threatens Ferroseed with Heat Wave. Xatu also uses Ferroseed as setup bait, setting up Calm Mind with impunity.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types such as Magmortar and Pyroar all force out Ferroseed with their STAB moves and resist both Gyro Ball and Seed Bomb, though neither appreciates being crippled by Thunder Wave or being worn down by Leech Seed.

**Taunt**: Taunt users such as Mismagius and Sawk cripple Ferroseed by preventing it from setting up entry hazards, using Leech Seed, and crippling Pokemon with Thunder Wave.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types such as Sawk, Gurdurr, and Hariyama threaten Ferroseed with their STAB moves and weaken it by removing its Eviolite with Knock Off. Gurdurr is also able to use Ferroseed as setup bait and takes advantage of Thunder Wave with Guts.

**Super Effective Coverage**: Many Pokemon that Ferroseed would normally wall such as special Samurott, Mesprit, and Exeggutor lure in Ferroseed and 2HKO it with Hidden Power Fire. Other Pokemon such as Jynx, Floatzel, and Ludicolo can all use Focus Blast to easily eliminate Ferroseed.

**Substitute**: Substitute blocks Leech Seed and status and because of Ferroseed's weak offensive presence, it cannot break through many Pokemon's Substitute. Klinklang takes very little damage from Ferroseed's attacks and sets up indefinitely.

Sorry for the wait. I got caught up in all of these other projects and forgot about the seeds :(

This is ready for QC now.

Comments in bold.
[OVERVIEW]
  • Unique defensive typing that allows it to check Pokemon such as Samurott, Kabutops, Cacturne
  • Access to both Spikes and Stealth Rock this is notable bc only one other mon has access to both rocks and spikes
  • Good defensive stats that are increase even further with Eviolite
  • Iron Barbs allows it to punish Pokemon that make contact such as Barbaracle and Scyther
  • Its low speed helps power up Gyro Ball giving it more of an offensive presence
  • Very low HP stat this is more what is significantly hindering its walling capabilities, its type weaknesses are just a negative since those types of pokemon are pretty common in the tier.
  • It is setup bait for many Pokemon due to its lacking offensive presence this contradicts with the 5th bullet point, fist you say that its low speed helps give it offensive presence and then you say it doesnt have much offensive presence.
  • 4x weakness to common Fire-type moves and weakness to Fighting-type hinders its walling capabilities
[SET]

I'd consider slashing seeb bomb first since it helps a lot with the increasing amount of water types like kabu/samu/costa/barb and even quagsire, and it also helps vs ludicolo; just seems more beneficial than gyro

  • Spike is a valuable support move that gets chip damage against any grounded Pokemon that switches in
  • Stealth Rock is an alternative if no other teammate carries the move
  • Gyro Ball combined with Ferroseed's low speed ensure that it is almost always fully powered, making up for its lacking attack stat
  • Seed Bomb is an alternative to hit Water-types such as Kabutops, Carracosta, and Samurott
  • Leech Seed is Ferroseed's only form of recovery and pressures Pokemon to switch out
  • Protect when used along with Leech Seed lets it wear down its foes and recover even more HP it also helps seed scout for choice locked attacker which is useful
  • Thunder Wave is an alternative to cripple fast threats such as Tauros, Sneasel, and Archeops, though do not use it with Gyro Ball, as lowering the speed of opposing Pokemon powers down the move
I dont really like the examples used here for twave because none of those mons are switching in or staying in on ferroseed in the first place. Not too sure what the best examples are but I'm sure you can think of something. Also I'd honestly go as far to say that Leech Seed is the only necessary move on the set, as its pretty feasible to run just about any combination of the other 6 moves listed.

Set Details
========
  • Maximum and HP and Defense EVs maximize Ferroseed's physical bulk
  • Relaxed nature is used if more physical bulk is needed while a Sassy nature gives Ferroseed more special bulk; both of which power up Ferroseed's Gyro Ball
  • Eviolite boosts both Ferroseed's defenses significantly making it very hard to take down
  • A specially defensive spread is an alternative if the team needs a more reliable answer to specially-based Water- and Grass-types
Usage Tips
========
  • Set up either Spikes or Stealth Rock against Pokemon that cannot do much back, such as Kabutops, Lanturn and Uxie or on forced switches.
  • Use Leech Seed to keep Ferroseed healthy and to deter Pokemon that try to set up. Sometimes it is good to use Leech Seed again expecting a switch to get more HP back and chip damage against the opponent.
  • Protect is good for scouting for coverage moves such as Samurott using Hidden Power Fire and should be used to gain more Leech Seed recovery. Try not to use the move too much, as the opponent will take advantage of that by setting up on the turn Ferroseed uses Protect. superpower kabutops is also somewhat common and the ferroseed user should scout for that as possible, just another example
  • If using Thunder Wave, try to catch Pokemon such as Pyroar and Sawk by crippling them on the switch. Thunder Wave is also useful against rain teams as Ferroseed is able to switch in on the majority of rain abusers and slow them down. uh idk why sawk or pyroar would switch into seed because they're really only switching in on an entry hazard or maybe gyro ball in pyroar's case, try and think of a better example
Team Options
========
  • Due to Ferroseed's exploitable Fire weakness, it is generally best to pair it up with Water-types such as Samurott, Kabutops, Floatzel and Carracosta. All of these Pokemon are able to use some of these Fire-types such as Pyroar as set up bait and threaten them with Aqua Jet. its not super important that they use them as setup bait its moreso just the general fact they they check fire types (some switch in better than others) and its an added bonus that they can setup on them Bulky Water-types such as Lanturn, Mantine, and Pelipper also pair well with Ferroseed, due to all of them good defensive synergy.
  • Magmortar is another good teammate, as it is able to break past many of Ferroseed's answers with its superb coverage, while Ferroseed supports it with hazards.
  • Psychic-types such as Musharna, Mesprit, and Uxie pair well, as all of these Pokemon can switch in on Fighting-type moves and threaten them with their STAB.
  • Ground-types such as Stunfisk and Rhydon also pair well with Ferroseed, as the former is able to switch in on Magneton, while the latter is able to threaten Fire-types with its dual STAB. I think ground types being able to switch into magnets isnt too notable since hp fire isnt that great or common on magents, its moreso that they appreciate having a bulky water/grass resist to fall back on
  • Having a Ghost-type to spinblock is also very helpful for Ferroseed so Pokemon such as Mismagius, Rotom, and Haunter pair well. Colbur Berry Mismagius can also switch in on Sawk, which easily breaks past Ferroseed with its Fighting type STAB. Mismagius along with Haunter, also have access to Taunt to prevent Pokemon from using Defog as well. All of these Pokemon also threaten Xatu which switches in on Ferroseed with impunity.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Ferroseed can use Toxic over Thunder Wave to stall out opponent's with Leech Seed and Protect
  • Knock Off is an option to hit Xatu and other Psychic- and Ghost-types its really more just for general utility or removing the foes item bc it does very little to them anyways
  • Curse allows Ferroseed to raise it's defenses even further and it powers up Gyro Ball significantly by raising its Attack and lowering its Speed
Checks and Counters
===================

make xatu first pls since it is the 100% counter to ferroseed, seed literally has no hope against the bird

**Fire-types**: Fire-types, such as Magmortar and Pyroar all forces out Ferroseed with their STAB and resist both Gyro Ball and Seed Bomb, though both do not appreciate being crippled by Thunder Wave. they're also bothered a bit by leech seed so be clear that they're not the best switch ins but obviously force it out easily

**Xatu**: Xatu switches in on any of Ferroseed's attacks and bounces back any hazards it may set up, while in return, Xatu threatens Ferroseed with Heat Wave.

**Taunt**: Taunt cripples Ferroseed by preventing it from setting up hazards, using Leech Seed, and crippling Pokemon via Thunder Wave. examples pls

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types, such as Sawk, Gurdurr, and Hariyama threaten Ferroseed with their STAB and cripple it by removing its item with Knock Off. Gurdurr is also able to use Ferroseed as set up bait and takes advantage of Thunder Wave with Guts.

**Substitute**: Substitute blocks Leech Seed and status and because of Ferroseed's weak offensive presence, it cannot break through many Pokemon's Substiute. examples pls
After the above is done,
QC

ferroseed.gif
ferroseed.gif
ferroseed.gif

- change the order of the moves to stealth rock / spikes and gyro ball / seed bomb. Stealth rock is way more common than spikes. Same goes for gyro ball.

- under usage tips, i would rather you say t wave is great for crippling faster teams by halving the speed of your opponents pokemon. For example, its decimates rain teams etc..

QC 2/3 once the above is implemented.

Overview:
- Don't talk about Base Stats. This is primarily referring to the points about its HP and defenses; the Speed is fine because you're not just saying "low Speed makes it good/bad."
- It's not a good Cacturne check because not only can it do nothing to Cacturne, but the best set, mixed Life Orb, beats it outright.

Set:
- Seed Bomb is terrible. Replace it with Knock Off and throw Seed Bomb in OO.
- I think Toxic should be slashed at the end of the last slot. It's the only way Ferroseed can do anything to opposing Grass-types, which is especially relevant for stuff like Ludicolo and Exeggutor.
- Why would you use Sassy with no SpDef investment? I like running mixed defenses, but max/max Defense should not be running Sassy, especially when 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpDef Relaxed gets you the same exact amount of SpDef amount with more Defense. A spread I often use is 248 HP / 148 Def / 112 SpDef Relaxed/Impish, which allows you to live three Life Orb Ice Beams from Samurott so if you miss a Leech Seed or something you don't just auto-lose to it.
- Don't agree with tennis on the Spikes / Stealth Rock order. Spikes are infinitely more valuable because of their considerably lower distribution. Stealth Rock is really easy to fit onto a team.

Team Options:
- I pretty much never use Ferroseed outside of super fat teams, and I don't think your Water-type partners are the best for it. I'd go for more relevant bulky Water-types for examples here--Lanturn, Prinplup, Quagsire, etc. Carracosta is fine because the defensive set rules. You can also mention that you have more freedom to run Spikes on Ferroseed if using it with a Stealth Rock partner like Prinplup or Carracosta.
- Again, I don't know why you'd list Magmortar as a Ferroseed partner. It doesn't even share good synergy with Ferroseed, and you're generally breaking Ferroseed's checks with status/hazards/Leech Seed rather than brute force.
- Wouldn't use an offensive spinblocker with Ferroseed for reasons endlessly repeated above. Rotom is ok because Scarf Rotom is a fine catch-all. I think people generally prioritize spinblocking too much when writing analyses for hazard setters. Ferroseed beats most spinners anyways, and it's fat as shit so you get multiple opportunities to set up hazards again later.

Other Options:
- I told you to put two of these three moves on the set, so obviously cut them from here. However, when you get to Knock Off under Moves, don't even mention Xatu because 0/0 Xatu still beats Knock Off Ferroseed.
- Curse sounds horrible, please cut it.
- Move Seed Bomb/Bullet Seed down here as a way to threaten offensive Water-types like Samurott, Barbaracle, and Samurott immediately. That's their only use, so they're niche enough for OO but not good enough for a slash.
- You can mention running 44 Atk EVs as a way to guarantee to break Magneton's Substitute after two Knock Offs. It's super niche and Magneton incredibly rarely runs Substitute, but 44 EVs is pretty minor so it's probably still fine to mention.

Checks and Counters:
- Mention Calm Mind Xatu setting up on Ferroseed as well. Even without Heat Wave, Xatu still shits on Ferroseed, but it can actually use it as setup fodder if it's running CM.
- You use the word cripple very liberally. I'd be wary of that because removing its Eviolite does not "cripple it" in that it doesn't prevent it from getting up hazards. It softens Ferroseed and makes it easier to beat with things it normally walls, but it hardly "cripples" it.

Implemented most of the things, but I can't say I agree on just putting exclusively bulky Pokemon to pair with Ferroseed. Ferroseed also works well on balance teams if in need of a bulky hazard setter that checks Samurott and other general rain mons. I did have line for offensive and defensive Water-types anyways. Also talking about base stats is fine unless I were to explicitly mention that it has base 91 defense so I see no harm in saying if it has a good stats in particular areas.

Anyways thanks for both of your input. I will get this written up soon after I fix some of these things up.

Overview
  • Not really sure if you should compare this to Crustle, while it's true they're the only relevant mons in the tier with both rocks and Spikes, they have completely different roles outside of that. Just say that its typing combined with entry hazards make it a rly good hazard setter (and more specifically, one of the very few ones that can check Water-types)
  • Mention somewhere that its two weaknesses in particular make it super easy to lure. Almost every relevant Pokemon in NU that it can check learns some kind of Fire or Fighting coverage.
  • I also wouldn't say its low HP stat hinders its ability to wall because it's still very bulky. Instead say it's hindered from its overreliance on Leech Seed, since it depends on that both for health and as its main form of passive damage.
Set Details
  • What specifically does phdef investment allow it to check better? You said spdef investment lets it check special Waters better which is good, but make sure the reader knows why they aren't just running a full spdef spread
Checks and Counters
  • Give a section to SE coverage here. Like I said before, it's super easy to lure, since tons of Pokemon in this tier get Fire and Fighting coverage.
Otherwise looks good, do this stuff Hootie and I'll stamp

All of these Pokemon are also capable of running Stealth Rock, allowing Ferroseed to run Spikes. Having a Ghost-type such as Mismagius, Rotom, or Haunter to spinblock is also very helpful for Ferroseed. Colbur Berry Mismagius can also switch in on Sawk, which easily breaks past Ferroseed with its Fighting-type moves(remove space). Mismagius and Haunter also have access to Taunt to prevent Pokemon from using Defog. All of these Pokemon also threaten Xatu, which switches in on Ferroseed with impunity. Sneasel is another good partner for Ferroseed, as it threatens Xatu with its dual STAB typing and STAB moves.

Other Options
=============

Seed Bomb and Bullet Seed are alternatives to hit Water-types such as Kabutops, Carracosta, and Samurott, but generally this leaves Ferroseed as setup bait for many Pokemon.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Xatu**: Xatu switches in on any of Ferroseed's attacks and bounces back any entry hazard-setting attempt, while in return, (remove comma) Xatu threatens Ferroseed with Heat Wave.

**Super Effective Coverage**: Many Pokemon that Ferroseed would normally wall such as special Samurott, Mesprit, (comma) and Exeggutor use Hidden Power Fire to lure in Ferroseed and 2HKO it with Hidden Power Fire.

Implemented. Thanks P Squared for the check. In regards to that Leech Seed line with Toxic I meant to say that Leech Seed in conjunction with Toxic stalls out opponents faster so I just changed the phrase to "along with" like you suggested to clarify.

This is done and ready to be uploaded :)
