[OVERVIEW]
Ponyta has great defensive stats and access to recovery in the form of Morning Sun, as well as the ability to burn physical threats with either Flame Body or Will-O-Wisp, making it a great wall that can check threats like Mienfoo and Pawniard. Ponyta possesses a great Speed tier, reaching 19 Speed, and thus being faster than most of the unboosted metagame. It can also run a special set with Sunny Day. However, its mono-Fire typing leaves it weak to entry hazards, and easily revenge killed by Diglett. Ponyta also relies on recoil moves to do damage, which further wears it down.

Moves
========
Flare Blitz is Ponyta's best STAB option, hitting hard even without much Attack investment. Morning Sun provides Ponyta with reliable recovery, allowing it to handle physical threats better and have more opportunities to switch in even with entry hazards up. Will-O-Wisp cripples physical threats, allowing Ponyta to check them. Wild Charge hits Flying-types, such as Archen, as well as weakened Water-types. However, Toxic is usable to beat opposing Fire-types and Porygon, the latter of which can otherwise beat Ponyta one-on-one. Hypnosis lets Ponyta neutralize a threat on the switch by putting it to sleep.
Set Details
========
A Jolly nature with 196 Speed EVs lets Ponyta hit 19 Speed, outspeeding most of the metagame. 76 Attack EVs allow Ponyta's Flare Blitz to OHKO Pawniard 100% of the time after Stealth Rock. 156 Defense and 76 Special Defense EVs give Ponyta 14 in both defenses, which is optimal when using Eviolite. Flame Body is helpful for potentially inflicting burns when Ponyta is switched in on physical attackers.
Usage Tips
========
Take advantage of Ponyta's physical bulk and Speed to switch into physical attackers and burn them. Flare Blitz and Wild Charge are to be used when the opposing Pokemon is in KO range; otherwise, you should try to avoid having Ponyta take recoil damage. Toxic and Hypnosis should be used on predicted switched to a Ponyta check such as Chinchou or Porygon. If entry hazards are up on your side of the field, try to play Ponyta more carefully, as taking entry hazard damage hinders its ability to wall threats. Try to get the entry hazards out of the way as soon as possible. Also, you should play Ponyta carefully when the opponent has Diglett, which revenge kills Ponyta with ease.
Team Options
========
Ponyta appreciates entry hazard removal, so Pokemon with Defog, such as Archen and Vullaby, or Rapid Spin, such as Drilbur and Staryu, are good teammates. Ponyta can also beat common spinblockers for Drilbur and Staryu in return. Pokemon that benefit from physical threats being weakened appreciate Ponyta checking most of them. Grass-types, such as Foongus, Pumpkaboo, Lileep, and Ferroseed, check annoying Water-types that threaten Ponyta, and the latter two can also set up entry hazards. Water-types, such as Slowpoke, handle Rock- and Ground-types for Ponyta. Spritzee is able to aid Ponyta in longevity with Wish, which is nice because entry hazards force Ponyta to use Morning Sun frequently, whittling down the move's PP quickly. Spritzee also appreciates Ponyta's ability to check Steel-types, and Foongus.

Moves
========
Sunny Day allows Ponyta to take less damage from Water-type moves and makes Solar Beam execute in one turn. Under sun, Ponyta also recovers more health with Morning Sun. Fire Blast is Ponyta's best special Fire-type move, and it is especially strong under the sun. Solar Beam is used to catch many of Ponyta's checks, such as Chinchou, off guard and weaken or KO them. Morning Sun is used for longevity and to heal off passive damage from entry hazards and status ailments.
Set Details
========
With 76 Special Attack EVs, Ponyta is able to 2HKO Eviolite Chinchou, and OHKO Berry Juice Chinchou with Solar Beam after entry hazard damage. A Timid nature with 196 Speed EVs maximizes Ponyta's Speed so that it can outspeed as many foes as possible. With 156 Defense and 76 Special Defense EVs, Ponyta's defenses hit even numbers, which are beneficial with an Eviolite. Flame Body can potentially burn physical attackers and cripple them.
Usage Tips
========
Use this set to surprise Water-, Rock-, and Ground-types. Sun-boosted Fire Blast hits hard, so use it if there's a free opportunity to. Fire / Grass coverage is walled by other Fire-types, so be careful to only use Sunny Day when it benefits Ponyta and not the opposing team. When facing bulkier Pokemon, watch out for Thunder Wave and other status moves. Moreover, when facing teams with Diglett, play carefully with Ponyta, as Diglett always revenge kills Ponyta with ease.
Team Options
========
Entry hazard setters allow Ponyta to beat Sturdy users; furthermore, with either Stealth Rock or a layer of Spikes, Ponyta OHKOes non-Eviolite Chinchou with Solar Beam. Defog or Rapid Spin support from the likes of Archen and Drilbur, respectively, helps Ponyta switch in and out throughout the game. Flying-types such as Fletchling appreciate Ponyta luring out and KOing Chinchou, one of their biggest checks, and dealing with Rock-types. If Ponyta is on a sun team, other Chlorophyll users, such as Bellsprout, can benefit from Sunny Day.

Other Options
=============
Agility or Flame Charge can be used to let Ponyta outspeed Diglett, but they take up important moveslots. Iron Tail lets Ponyta hit Rock- and Fairy-types without incurring recoil damage. A physical or mixed Life Orb set can be used to pressure teams, as with a Life Orb, Ponyta becomes a strong attacker on its own.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Diglett**: Diglett is able to always revenge kill Ponyta, as it outspeeds it and OHKOes with an Earthquake.
**Water-types**: Water-types resist Ponyta's STAB moves, and most of them can OHKO or 2HKO Ponyta with ease. Defensive Water-type Pokemon, such as Chinchou and Skrelp, give Ponyta more problems over the course of the game, while offensive Water-types, such as Omanyte and Tirtouga, are able to use Ponyta as setup fodder and threaten a sweep. However, Water-types struggle with the SunnyBeam set, and certain ones may not be able to beat Ponyta depending on its coverage.
**Timburr**: Timburr benefits from Will-O-Wisp due to Guts, is able to boost with Bulk Up in front of Ponyta due to its good bulk, and can restore its HP with Drain Punch.
**Residual Damage**: Stealth Rock and Spikes give Ponyta a hard time switching into attacks, as Ponyta one-quarter or more of its HP with Stealth Rock and Spikes up. Toxic also wears down Ponyta, and Morning Sun can be stalled out of PP over the game.
**Paralysis**: If Ponyta gets paralyzed, it loses its, Speed and thus its ability to check many physical threats not at its Speed tier.
**Rock- and Ground-types**: While Rock- and Ground-types do not appreciate getting burned, many, such as Drilbur, can weaken or 2HKO. Onix can take a Solar Beam at full health with Sturdy and can weaken Ponyta.
