Following the same basic idea as the other teambuilding compendiums found throughout the PU sub-forum, the basic goal of this thread is to provide a visual tool to assist teambuilding by giving players a quick way to pick checks and counters for the metagame's top threats. Basically, a "check" as defined here is anything that reliably beats a threat, and they're separated in this list by whether or not they can switch in. The Pokemon will be listed by sprites rather than name for the sake of easy and quick reference, and they will be organized in descending order of viability ranking. As I want this to be a community-built resource, I encourage everyone to suggest changes as you see fit.

There are three categories that the checks will be divided into for each entry.
  • Guaranteed Switch-Ins (GSI): These Pokemon can switch into basically anything a threat can throw at them and win the matchup, within reason. This often means switching in on more than one set, for example Samurott can be a Swords Dance sweepers and a Life Orb Special wallbreaker, so lacks a guaranteed switch in. When evaluating which moves a check must be able to switch into, I have used what I think is good enough to be standard, but obviously that is subjective.

  • Situational Switch-Ins (SSI): These Pokemon can switch in safely under certain circumstances, but not always. Pokemon in this category can either switch safely into some variants of a threat but struggle against others, or they struggle with common coverage moves but can at least switch into a threat's STABs and other moves commonly used on switches (such as boosting moves and Knock Off) and win the matchup. This is somewhat of a "gray area" category, so there's a bit of flexibility here.

  • Non-Switch-Ins (NSI): These Pokemon cannot switch safely into a certain threat, generally because they are beaten by one of the threat's STABs, lose if they switch in on a boosting move, etc. Pokemon in this category can, however, defeat a threat in a 1-on-1 matchup. This includes faster revenge killers, as well as Pokemon that can take a single hit and KO back.

There might be exceptions to the above rules, so these will be handled on a case-by-case basis. My advice for using this compendium is to take a look at the RU Viability Rankings and make sure that you have an answer to the highest ranked threats first, since these are generally going to be some of the most dangerous and common threats and as such are high priority when teambuilding. Once you have those covered, then you can more comfortably prepare for the lower ranked threats. Also, don't worry about having a GSI for everything; that's basically impossible given how many threats there are an how hard it is to fully counter some of them. Instead, try to at least have an SSI for the top threats so that you'll have something that you can throw in front of them somewhat reliably. More offensive teams can probably make do with a couple of NSIs and proper offensive pressure. Bottom line is that you shouldn't get too carried away with trying to have perfect counters for everything, but this compendium should give you a wide range of checks to choose from so that you can build until you feel you can cover what you need to between team synergy and in-game decision making.

You may post now, for the S/A threats, I did it in a low time so it may be a bit poor, post if you have any concern :)

i think sd spdef cradily can be listed as a sigilyph counter/check, as spdef sd is able to take some boosted air slashes, cradily gets recover, and with sd boosting it +2 can 2hko with rolls and +4 is guaranteed 2hko (while burned).
0 SpA Sigilyph Air Slash vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Cradily: 58-69 (15.4 - 18.3%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage
+1 0 SpA Sigilyph Air Slash vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Cradily: 85-102 (22.6 - 27.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage
+2 0 SpA Sigilyph Air Slash vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Cradily: 114-135 (30.3 - 35.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage
+2 0 Atk burned Cradily Rock Slide vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Sigilyph: 162-192 (46.5 - 55.1%) -- 67.2% chance to 2HKO
+4 0 Atk burned Cradily Rock Slide vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Sigilyph: 243-286 (69.8 - 82.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Cradily Rock Slide vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Sigilyph: 164-194 (47.1 - 55.7%) -- 73.8% chance to 2HKO

Gourgeist could be added to a bunch of these, especially if it's running Fire Blast. Mega Steelix, Mega Abomasnow (either SSI or NSI depending on the set), Durant (probably SSI), Virizion, Dugtrio, Bronzong, Seismitoad, Rotom-C, Qwilfish, and Escavalier (either SSI or NSI).

Saying there are guaranteed and safe switch ins to Dugtrio kinda contradicts what Dugtrio does. Putting all those mons into NSI seems better since unless Dugtrio switches into a Flying type(which it wont) or a Shed Shell mon(lol).

Lovely project, gotta check out all the subdivisions carefully but right now virizion is by no means a GSI to dugtrio when aerial ace is a legit option for it. Virizion just dies.

Realistically dugtrio has no switch-ins outside of levitators and flying types but eh, that works, semantics.

Gotta comment on other sections later on.

Vileplume can be listed as a Scrafity check when running Moonblast, Vile tanks any Scrafty's move and can hist hard with a 4x SE move.

252+ Atk Choice Band Scrafty Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Vileplume: 162-192 (45.8 - 54.3%) -- 5.5% chance to 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
0 SpA Vileplume Moonblast vs. 156 HP / 0 SpD Scrafty: 264-312 (85.1 - 100.6%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

+1 252 Atk Life Orb Scrafty Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Vileplume: 192-227 (54.3 - 64.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
0 SpA Vileplume Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Scrafty: 264-312 (97.4 - 115.1%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

Now Haryiama as a Mega-Abomasnow check, Haryiama thank's to AV has a greath bulky what alows him to switch well into Giga Drain/Blizzard only feraring Wood Hammer/EQ but Haryiama outspeed Mega-Aboma anyways then it's fine cause in return Yiama can Ohko with Close Combat.

252+ SpA Mega Abomasnow Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 136 SpD Assault Vest Hariyama: 114-135 (26.5 - 31.4%) -- 35.1% chance to 3HKO after hail damage
252+ SpA Mega Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 136 SpD Assault Vest Thick Fat Hariyama: 84-99 (19.5 - 23%) -- 91.8% chance to 4HKO after hail damage

252+ Atk Hariyama Close Combat vs. 152 HP / 0- Def Mega Abomasnow: 434-512 (120.8 - 142.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

So, I know Zebstrika isn't in Viability Rankings atm (it should be tho) but it actually does pretty well against a fair few mons:

Mega Abomasnow = SSI. Zeb's Sap Sipper lets it switch into any Grass-type STAB and can easily take unboosted Ice Shards. It can be OHKOed by +2 Ice Shard with some prior damage tho.

Alomomola = GSI. Self explanitory. As a special attacker, it doesn't mind Scald burns and TBolt is an easy 2HKO. Can also use Volt Switch to build momentum.

Durant = NSI. Dies to anything other than Iron Head and Thunder Fang, but it naturally outspeeds Durant and has TBolt and Overheat.

Fletchinder = GSI. +2 Acrobatics can't OHKO and Zeb is a special attacker, thus it isn't nerfed by burns.

Glalie-Mega = NSI. Anything of Mega Glalie's kills Zeb, but it outspeeds and has Overheat. Can take an Ice Shard.

Sigilyph = NSI. TBolt and Volt Switch allow Zeb to revenge Sigi.

Tangrowth = SSI. Sap Sipper allows Zeb to switch into any Grass move, including Sleep Powder. Focus Blast destroys Zeb tho.

Virizion = SSI. Read Tangrowth. Calm Mind reks Zeb. Any Fighting STAB reks Zeb.

Escavalier = NSI. Everything but Iron Head drops Zeb. Overheat bones Escavalier tho.

Qwilfish = GSI. Immune to T-Wave. Doesn't get nerfed by burns. Destroys with Electric STAB

Rotom-Mow = GSI. Sap Sipper gives Leaf Storm immunity. HP Ice + Overheat 2HKOes any variant. Trick doesn't kill Zeb (hurts tho)

Samurott = SSI. Bodied by H-Pump. Immune to Grass Knot. Can take a +2 Aqua Jet. Electric STABs bone Samurott

Sneasal = NSI. Can take an Ice Shard and KO with Overheat. Sneasal kills with virtually any move if Zeb tries to switch in tho

Jellicent = SSI. Frailty causes Scald / Shadow Ball to do a fair amount. TBolt 2HKOes

Accelgor = NSI. Can live any one hit and KO back with Overheat, but can't outspeed.

Amoonguss = SSI. Immune to Spore, Stun Spore, Giga Drain. Sludge Bomb can hurt. Overheat does a buttload

Braviary = NSI. Loses to Scarf. Can revenge any other set not behind a Sub.

Clawitzer = NSI. Dies to any move. TBolt OHKOes tho

The set I was using for all of this was Volt Switch / Overheat / HP Ice / TBolt w/ Life Orb.

In regards to emboar switch-ins neither quagsire or seismitoad are guaranteed switch-ins since emboar learns grass knot. It may not be a super common choice for emboar but it's definitely not something I have never ever seen before.
In regards to escavalier quagsire isn't a guaranteed switch-in either cause look as this megahorn damage
252+ Atk Choice Band Escavalier Megahorn vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 265-313 (67.2 - 79.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
LOL the switch-in is here boys /s
Also in no world is weezing a switch-in to sawk it literally never has been and never will be:
252+ Atk Choice Band Mold Breaker Sawk Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Weezing: 178-210 (53.2 - 62.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Mold Breaker Sawk Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Weezing: 222-262 (66.4 - 78.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Slowking and Houndoom are not guaranteed switch-ins to delphox
Anything that dies to a +2 zen headbutt/is 2hkoed should be on SSI instead of GSI to virizion(grass/poisons that kinda stuff)
Fletchinder is a guaranteed escavalier switch-in, quagsire isn't
Seismitoad is not a guaranteed switch-in to mega camerupt
Drudd isn't a guaranteed switch-in to houndoom
Gurdurr isn't a guaranteed switch-in to scrafty, pelipper and rotom-fan are
Escavalier, braviary and amoonguss are not guaranteed switch-ins to tangrowth
Jellicent, wrath and pelipper are not guaranteed switch-ins to durant, stunfisk deserves a mention as a guaranteed switch-in to it(and a bunch of other shit for that matter)
Mola's GSI list is really wrong, remove everything that can get toxic'ed bar tangrowth, remove melo and sigil too, these should all fall under SSI
Add tangrowth as a SSI to meloetta

Mega abomasnow is listed twice

Ehh I'd argue houndoom is. Between immunity to it's dual STABs, resistance to grass knot, and a very slim chance to be 2HKOd by LO dazzling gleam (
252 SpA Life Orb Delphox Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Houndoom: 125-148 (42.9 - 50.8%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO) I would definitely say it is.

To the standard set yeah but there are people who have been running:
252 SpA Life Orb Delphox Hidden Power Water vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Houndoom: 190-224 (65.2 - 76.9%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
Not as common but it's relevant enough to be noted. Even with just Dazzling Gleam you still have to win the 50/50.
