[OVERVIEW]

Grumpig's uncommon access to Thick Fat sets it apart from other bulky Psychic-types in the tier by allowing it to switch into threatening Fire- and Ice-type wallbreakers, such as Magmortar, Vanilluxe, and Aurorus. Its useful defensive niche for teams is outlined by its variety of support moves, such as Heal Bell, Thunder Wave, Whirlwind, and Taunt, and its impressive special bulk. Additionally, Grumpig is one of the few Psychic-types in NU with access to Focus Blast, which allows it to fight back against the Steel- and Dark-types that try to switch into its Psychic-type STAB move. However, Grumpig is cursed with a lacking Defense stat, meaning it struggles to effectively check Fighting-types, such as Sawk, Primeape, and Hariyama, like its fellow Psychic-types. Due to a lack of reliable recovery moves, Grumpig is prone to being easily whittled down throughout a match. It also faces stiff competition from other bulky Psychic-types, such as Mesprit and Musharna, which have access to better utility moves and recovery and serve as effective Fighting-type switch-ins because of their superior physical bulk.

Moves
========

Psychic is Grumpig's strongest STAB move, but Psyshock can be used as an alternative to hit some physically frailer Pokemon, such as Magmortar, Ninetales, and Cryogonal, for more damage. Focus Blast provides great neutral coverage alongside Grumpig's Psychic-type STAB move because it nails Dark- and Steel-types, such as Liepard, Mawile, and Klinklang. Taunt shuts down slower Pokemon that rely on status moves to beat Grumpig, such as defensive Mawile, Mega Audino, Ferroseed, and Regirock, and prevents them from taking advantage of Grumpig. Thunder Wave cripples fast offensive Pokemon, such as Lilligant, Vivillon, and Mismagius. Alternatively, Toxic whittles down bulky Pokemon that Grumpig has trouble with, such as Mesprit, Mega Audino, and Musharna. Signal Beam can be used instead of Focus Blast to hit Malamar and Psychic-types harder while still retaining super-effective coverage for Dark-types. However, without Focus Blast, Grumpig struggles to take down opposing Steel-types.

Set Details
========

Maximum HP investment is preferred to take advantage of Grumpig's great special bulk. Running 96 Speed EVs allows Grumpig to outspeed everything up to Adamant Pawniard. The remaining EVs are invested in Special Attack with a Modest nature to give Grumpig's attacks some more power. Thick Fat sets Grumpig apart from other bulky Psychic-types by providing it with invaluable Fire- and Ice-type resistances. Leftovers provides Grumpig with passive recovery throughout the match. Colbur Berry can weaken a Dark-type's STAB attack for Grumpig to give it the opportunity to retaliate with Focus Blast, Signal Beam, Thunder Wave, or Toxic. Additionally, Fighting-types that commonly carry Knock Off, such as Sawk and Hariyama, cannot OHKO Grumpig if it's holding a Colbur Berry.

Usage Tips
========

Use Thick Fat to switch Grumpig into high-powered Fire- and Ice-type attacks from the likes of Magmortar, Vanilluxe, and Aurorus. However, do not keep Grumpig in against strong physical attackers, such as Archeops and Tauros, because they can KO Grumpig with a little prior damage. Make use of aggressive double switches to prevent Pokemon with Pursuit, such as Liepard and Skuntank, from trapping Grumpig. Grumpig should spread paralysis on opposing offensive teams to slow them down to a pace that it can keep up with, while it can defeat slower, passive Pokemon, such as Mega Audino, Regirock, and Pelipper, by incapacitating them with Taunt and whittling them down with attacks or Toxic damage.

Team Options
========

Offensive Grumpig fits well on balanced teams in need of a stallbreaker with the ability to switch into Fire- and Ice-types. Grass-types, such as Tangela, Vileplume, and Lilligant, appreciate Grumpig's ability to switch into Magmortar and Ice-types. Physically bulky Poison-types, such as Weezing and Garbodor, beat the physical attackers that threaten Grumpig, such as Klinklang, Samurott, and Scyther. Additionally, Grumpig provides these Poison-types with a useful Psychic-type resistance. Ground-types, such as Rhydon and Sandslash, beat Skuntank, one of the safest switch-ins to Grumpig available. Ironically, Skuntank is a great partner for Grumpig as well because it is a safe switch-in to many of the Psychic-types in the tier, such as Musharna, Xatu, and Mesprit.

Moves
========

Psychic is Grumpig's strongest and most reliable STAB move. Heal Bell removes status conditions from Grumpig and its teammates. Thunder Wave slows down opposing offensive Pokemon that try to take advantage of Grumpig's weak offensive presence. Toxic whittles down bulky foes, such as Gourgeist-XL and Mega Audino. Whirlwind is useful to phaze Pokemon that try to set up on Grumpig, such as Klinklang and Mega Audino. Taunt can prevent slower Pokemon, such as Musharna, Regirock, and Roselia, from setting up entry hazards or healing against Grumpig. Signal Beam can be used to punish Dark-types, such as Malamar and Liepard, that try to switch into Grumpig.

Set Details
========

Maximum HP and Special Defense investment with a Calm nature maximizes Grumpig's special bulk, granting it a variety of safe opportunities to switch in. Thick Fat is Grumpig's defining quality because of the useful Fire- and Ice-type resistances it provides. Leftovers provides Grumpig with invaluable passive recovery.

Usage Tips
========

Because Grumpig fits best on defensive teams that require its unique combination of resistances and utility moves, you should play it safe and not make overly risky decisions that have a chance of incapacitating Grumpig. Grumpig should use its great special bulk and resistances to switch into special wallbreakers, such as Magmortar, Poliwrath, and Aurorus, while letting its teammates handle physical attackers because of its lacking Defense. If Grumpig's teammates have set multiple entry hazards, it can use Whirlwind to phaze foes to quickly whittle them down. If Grumpig or its teammates are afflicted by any detrimental status conditions, it can use Heal Bell to refresh your team's condition.

Team Options
========

Specially defensive Grumpig only fits on passive, defensive teams in need of a reliable Fire-type check that can support the team with Heal Bell. Mega Audino provides Grumpig with Wish support and a handy Dark-type resistance, which especially comes in handy for absorbing Knock Off to preserve Grumpig's precious item. Additionally, Mega Audino appreciates that it doesn't need to run Heal Bell if Grumpig already carries it. Garbodor is a more reliable Fighting-resistant Pokemon and sets up Spikes and Toxic Spikes, which work well with Grumpig's Whirlwind to phaze and whittle down its foes. Defensive Grass-types, such as Gourgeist-XL, Vileplume, and Ferroseed, appreciate Grumpig's Heal Bell and ability to switch into powerful Fire- and Ice-type wallbreakers.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A fully offensive set with maximum Special Attack and Speed investment, a Timid nature, and a moveset consisting of Calm Mind / Psychic / Focus Blast / Grass Knot can be used as a late-game sweeper, but it is mostly outclassed by Mesprit. Grass Knot is an option on the offensive set to deal a lot of damage to Rhydon. Shadow Ball can be used to hit Xatu while retaining coverage against other Psychic-types, albeit at the expense of coverage against Dark-types. A physically defensive set can be used to allow Grumpig to check Fighting-types, such as Sawk and Hariyama, but it faces stiff competition from Mesprit and sacrifices a lot of the utility of the specially defensive set.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Dark-types**: Dark-types that carry Knock Off and Pursuit can deal massive damage to Grumpig, although they must be wary of Focus Blast and Signal Beam. However, Malamar cannot be 2HKOed by defensive Grumpig's Signal Beam, so it is especially threatening. Skuntank is probably the hardest Dark-type for Grumpig to deal with because, at worst, it takes neutral damage from Grumpig's common coverage moves and threatens it with Pursuit and Sucker Punch. Additionally, Skuntank commonly carries Lum Berry, meaning it is not as susceptible to Thunder Wave.

**Xatu**: Xatu resists all of Grumpig's common coverage moves and isn't affected by any status moves because of Magic Bounce.

**Physical Attackers**: Grumpig is very physically frail, so it will often lose large chunks of HP against strong physical attackers, such as Archeops, Scyther, and Kangaskhan. However, most of these attackers cannot switch in because of the threat of status or Grumpig's coverage.

[OVERVIEW] bae pig

  • Typing and Thick Fat give it useful resistances to Psychic-, Fighting-, Fire-, and Ice-types
  • Nice support options with Heal Bell, Thunder Wave, Whirlwind, and Taunt
  • One of the few Psychic-types in NU with access to Focus Blast, allowing it to get past Steel- and Dark-types which switch in on Grumpig's STAB moves.
  • Impressive special bulk allowing it to check some neutral special attackers, such as Floatzel and Rotom-S.
  • Easily exploitable physical bulk
  • Eclipsed by Mesprit and Musharna who can serve as effective Sawk switch-ins specify their much greater physical bulk; I might also mention how the possess more utility in Stealth Rock and being able to run an effective Calm Mind set with recovery, respectively
  • Dependent on Wish support because of a lack of recovery

Moves
========

  • Psychic for STAB. I'd slash Psyshock or at least put it in moves, helps check AV Magmortar, Ninetales, Jynx, and Cryo better, especially if it doesn't pack T-Wave
  • Focus Blast hits Darks and Steels
  • Taunt shuts down slower Pokemon who rely on status moves to beat Grumpig, such as defensive Mawile, Cradily, and Regirock, Mega Audino's the biggest one imo, certainly more relevant than Cradily, as it can beat it 1v1; Ferro's also relevant here and prevents them from taking advantage of Grumpig to set up Stealth Rock.
  • Thunder Wave is useful for slowing down Grumpig's foes.
  • Toxic whittles down bulky Pokemon that Grumpig has trouble with, such as Mesprit and Exeggutor. and Mega Audino
  • Signal Beam can be used in place of Focus Blast in order to hit Malamr and Psychic-types harder, while stilling retaining coverage against Dark-types. However, Grumpig struggles against Steel-types, such as Mawile and Klinklang, without Focus Blast.

Set Details
========

  • Max HP so Grumpig can tank its resistances as well as possible.
  • 96 Speed allows Grumpig to outspeed Adamant Pawniard and the rest of the EVs are placed in Special Attack with a Modest nature to ensure Grumpig can hit hard.
  • Thick Fat is the preferred ability because it gives Grumpig handy Fire and Ice resistances. I'd phrase this on a way that emphasizes this more, it's Grumpig's biggest niche
  • Leftovers gives Grumpig some passive recovery which helps it switch in more throughout a match.
  • Colbur Berry can weaken a Dark-type attack for Grumpig, allowing it to retaliate with Focus Blast, Signal Beam, or status.

Usage Tips
========

  • Switch Grumpig in on Fire- and Ice-types, such as Magmortar and Vanilluxe.
  • Use aggressive double switches to prevent Skuntank or other Pursuit users from shutting down Grumpig.
  • Don't keep Grumpig in on strong physical attackers, such as Archeops and Tauros, as they can threaten a KO with just a little prior damage
  • Thunder Wave is Grumpig's best tool against faster teams to slow offensive teams down to a speed Grumpig can keep up at.
I'd add a point about Taunting slower Pokemon that can't do much back to it and proceeding to whittle them down with its attacking moves or Toxic

Team Options
========

  • Offensive Grass-types, such as Tangela and Lilligant, appreciate Grumpig's rare ability to switch into Magmortar. I'd add defensive Grass-types to this list too, Ferro and Vileplume (actually Poison-types in general too, Weezing and Garbodor are also nice partners) also have really good defensive synergy
  • Ground-types, such as Rhydon and Sandslash, beat Skuntank, which is one of the hardest Pokemon for Grumpig to beat. stuff like Rhydon, Piloswine, and Regirock also handle most physical attackers, which Grumpig struggles against
  • Ironically, Skuntank is a great partner for Grumpig without Signal Beam because it is a safe switch-in to many of the Psychic-types in the tier, such as Musharna, Exeggutor, and Mesprit.
maybe say "Grumpig mostly fits on balance teams that need the very specific things it offers over other Psychic-types"

Moves

  • Psychic STAB
  • Heal Bell removes status from Grumpig and its teammates
  • Thunder Wave slows down offensive Pokemon that try to take advantage of Grumpig's low offensive presence.
  • Signal Beam punishes Dark-types that try to switch into Grumpig.
  • Whirlwind forces out any Pokemon that can set up on Grumpig, such as Klinklang and Mega Audino.
I'd definitely put Taunt somewhere

Set Details
========

  • Max HP and max SpDef with Calm for max bulk
  • Thick Fat gives Fire and Ice resistances
  • Leftovers is Grumpig's only form of recovery

Usage Tips
========

  • Grumpig is a safe switch-in to many of the Ice- and Fire-types in the tier, such as Aurorus, Magmortar, Vanilluxe, and Pyroar.
  • Because this set is typically fit on defensive teams, do not make unnecessarily risky plays. Specially Defensive Grumpig is usually needed by its teammates throughout the entire match for its resistances and Heal Bell.
  • Let Grumpig's teammates handle strong physical attackers, such as Scyther and Sawk, because it is quite physically frail.
  • If you have multiple entry hazards set up, Grumpig can deal a lot of damage to the opponent's team by using Whirlwind to constantly switch out its foe.

Team Options
========

  • Specially Defensive Grumpig only fits on passive, defensive teams in need of a reliable Fire-type check that can support the team with Heal Bell.
  • Wish support from Mega Audino because Grumpig doesn't have reliable recovery. Mega Audino also handles all of the Dark-types not carrying Pursuit for Grumpig. Grumpig can also cover the Heal Bell slot for it, letting it carry something like Toxic or w/e
  • Garbodor is a secondary Fighting-type resist and sets Spikes and Toxic Spikes which rack up damage on the opponent's team with Grumpig's Whirlwind.
  • Defensive Grass-types, such as Gourgeist-XL and Tangela, appreciate Grumpig's Heal Bell and ability to switch into powerful Fire- and Ice-type wallbreakers. give Ferroseed and Vileplume mentions here

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Calm Mind three attacks, outclassed by Mesprit mostly
  • Grass Knot hits Rhydon
  • maybe mention Shadow Ball in the last slot of offensive for Xatu and other Psychic-types

Checks and Counters
===================

**Skuntank**: Skuntank takes neutral damage at worst from Grumpig's common coverage moves and traps it with Pursuit.

**Physical Attackers**: Grumpig is very physically frail, so it will often lose large chunks of HP against strong physical attackers, such as Archeops, Scyther, and Kangaskhan.

**Dark-types**: Knock Off and Pursuit destroy Grumpig, although they must be wary of Focus Blast and Signal Beam. give Malamar a special mention

**Musharna**: If Grumpig isn't carrying Signal Beam, Musharna can outlast Grumpig because it resists Grumpig's common coverage moves and can hit it super-effectively with Signal Beam. add Xatu here, it's a hard counter
I haven't used defensive Grumpig but Brawlfest posted this set in matchmaking and I'm not sure if it should be the main defensive one, but imo it deserves a mention (i.e. slash it in a way that also suggests this set)

Eh, brawl's set is probably a more 'tweakable' version to the existing sets, but the offensive set already has most of these moves (namely Taunt + Toxic) and I don't exactly see the defensive set taking better advantage of these.

Also Disjunction, I can suggest a more effective EV spread for the defensive set, which minimizes LO Mortar's chances of 3HKOing Pig with EQ (from ~70% of the time to ~1% of the time) while retaining good special bulk.

4 Atk Life Orb Magmortar Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 56 Def Grumpig: 117-139 (32.1 - 38.1%) -- 1.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Pyroar Hyper Voice vs. 252 HP / 200+ SpD Grumpig: 121-142 (33.2 - 39%) -- 8.8% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Btw, you can mention Signal Beam allows you to maintain pressure on Jynx, so you won't have to worry about forgoing Thunder Wave.

ok hi I implemented both with some artistic freedom

Pokedots I didn't really mention how Grass-types have good defensive synergy with Grumpig because they kind of don't outside of Grumpig covering some of their weaknesses. I added a separate point about Poison-types and mentioned it there, though.

I also discussed the slashes on the defensive set a lot with the QC team and we came up with the current one:

move 1: Psychic
move 2: Heal Bell
move 3: Thunder Wave / Toxic
move 4: Whirlwind / Taunt

Focus Blast and Signal Beam are less than optimal and Taunt is by no means a necessity on Defensive. lmk if you have any objections.

Punchshroom bolts didn't like the extra bit of defense because LOrb Mag isn't the best in the world, so we're sticking with max spdef.

I'll write this up soonish

An offensive set with maximum Special Attack and Speed investment, a Timid nature, and a moveset consisting of Calm Mind / Psychic / Focus Blast / Grass Knot can be used as a late-game sweeper, but is mostly outclassed by Mesprit. Grass Knot is an option on the offensive set to lure Rhydon. Shadow Ball can be used to hit Xatu while still hitting opposing psychic types, albeit at the expense of coverage against Dark-types. **Skuntank**: At worst, Skuntank takes neutral damage from Grumpig's common coverage moves and threatens it with Pursuit and Sucker Punch. **Xatu**: Xatu resist all of Grumpig's common coverage moves and isn't affected by any status moves because of Magic Bounce.

**Physical Attackers**: Grumpig is very physically frail, so it will often lose large chunks of HP against strong physical attackers, such as Archeops, Scyther, and Kangaskhan. mention how these arent meant to switch in, all crippled by a potential twave, chops takes a lot from psychic, kanga takes a ton from fblast

**Dark-types**: Dark-types which carry Knock Off and Pursuit can deal massive damage to Grumpig, although they must be wary of Focus Blast and Signal Beam. However, Malamar cannot be 2HKOed by Defensive Grumpig's Signal Beam, so it is especially threatening.

**Psychic-types**: If Grumpig isn't using Signal Beam, Psychic-types, such as Musharna and Mesprit, can resist its common coverage moves. Mesprit can overpower Grumpig with Signal Beam and Musharna can outlast it because of its superior bulk. musharna loses to grumpig with taunt and mesprit kinda does so idk
We can discuss changing the EV spread later, but besides that this is good.

Moves
========

Toxic whittles down bulky Pokemon that Grumpig has trouble with, such as Mesprit, Mega Audino, and Musharna. Signal Beam can be used instead of Focus Blast to hit Malamar and Psychic-types harder, (RC) while stilling retaining super effective coverage for Dark-types. However, without Focus Blast, Grumpig struggles to take down opposing Steel-types.

Set Details
========

Maximum HP investment is preferred to take advantage of Grumpig's great special bulk. Running 96 Speed EVs allows Grumpig to outspeed up to Adamant Pawniard. The remaining EVs are invested in Special Attack with a Modest nature to give Grumpig's attacks some power.

Usage Tips
========

Grumpig should spread paralysis on opposing offensive teams to slow them down to a pace that it can keep up with. Grumpig can defeat slower, passive Pokemon, such as Mega Audino, Regirock, and Pelipper, by using Taunt and whittling them down with attacks or Toxic damage.

Team Options
========

Offensive Grumpig fits well on balance teams in need of a stallbreaker with the ability to switch into Fire- and Ice-types. Ironically, Skuntank is a great partner for Grumpig because it is a safe switch-in to many of the Psychic-types in the tier, such as Musharna, Xatu, and Mesprit.

Moves

Psychic is Grumpig's strongest and most reliable STAB move. Heal Bell removes status conditions from Grumpig and its teammates. Thunder Wave slows down opposing offensive Pokemon that try to take advantage of Grumpig's weak offensive presence. Toxic whittles down opposing bulky foes, such as Gourgeist-XL and Mega Audino. Whirlwind is useful to phaze Pokemon that try and to set up on Grumpig, such as Klinklang and Mega Audino. Taunt can prevent slower Pokemon, such as Musharna, Regirock, and Roselia, from setting up entry hazards or healing against Grumpig. Signal Beam can punish Dark-types, such as Malamar and Liepard, that try to switch into Grumpig.

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

Because Grumpig fits best on defensive teams that require its unique combination of resistances and utility moves, you should be safe and not make overly risky decisions that have a chance of incapacitating Grumpig. Grumpig should use its great special bulk and resistances to switch into special wallbreakers, such as Magmortar, Poliwrath, and Aurorus. Grumpig should let its teammates handle physical attackers because of its lacking Defense. If Grumpig's teammates have set multiple entry hazards, it can use Whirlwind to phaze foes opponents to quickly whittle them down. If Grumpig or its teammates are afflicted by any detrimental status conditions, it can use Heal Bell to refresh your team's condition.

Team Options
========

Garbodor is a more reliable Fighting-resistant Pokemon and sets up Spikes and Toxic Spikes, (AC) which works well with Grumpig's Whirlwind to phaze and whittle down its foes. Defensive Grass-types, such as Gourgeist-XL, Vileplume, and Ferroseed, appreciate Grumpig's Heal Bell and ability to switch into powerful Fire- and Ice-type wallbreakers.

Other Options
=============

An offensive set with maximum Special Attack and Speed investment, a Timid nature, and a moveset consisting of Calm Mind / Psychic / Focus Blast / Grass Knot can be used as a late-game sweeper, but it is mostly outclassed by Mesprit.

===================

**Dark-types**: Dark-types which that carry Knock Off and Pursuit can deal massive damage to Grumpig, although they must be wary of Focus Blast and Signal Beam.

Although However, most of these attackers cannot switch in because of the threat of status or Grumpig's coverage.

[OVERVIEW]

Due to its uncommon access to Thick Fat, Grumpig sets itself apart from other bulky Psychic-types in the tier by being able to switch into threatening Fire- and Ice-type wallbreakers, such as Magmortar, Vanilluxe, and Aurorus. Its useful defensive niche for teams is outlined by its variety of support moves, such as Heal Bell, Thunder Wave, Whirlwind, and Taunt, and its impressive special bulk. Additionally, Grumpig is one of the few Psychic-types in NU with access to Focus Blast, which allows it to fight back against the Steel- and Dark-types that try and switch into its Psychic-type STAB move. It also faces stiff competition from other bulky Psychic-types, such as Mesprit and Musharna, which have access to better utility moves, (RC) and recovery, (RC) and serve as effective Fighting-type switch-ins because of their superior physical bulk.
