OU Kommo-o

QC: PK Gaming, Colonel M, p2
GP: The Dutch Plumberjack

[OVERVIEW]

* Kommo-o can use its unique and solid offensive typing to act as a special sweeper with Autotomize.
* It resists priority like Sucker Punch, Aqua Jet, and Water Shuriken, which, when coupled with its solid natural bulk, makes sweeping easier.
* It has a lot of boosting moves to choose from, but most of them are outclassed by other Dragon- or Fighting-types.
* Kommo-o has a mediocre stat distribution for a sweeper. Its offensive stats and Speed are rather poor by OU standards.
* A 4x weakness to Fairy and an inability to touch most Fairy-types with its STAB moves hurts Kommo-o's viability.

[SET]
name: Autotomize
move 1: Autotomize
move 2: Clanging Scales
move 3: Focus Blast
move 4: Poison Jab
item: Life Orb
ability: Bulletproof
nature: Rash
evs: 28 Atk / 252 SpA / 228 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Autotomize allows Kommo-o to boost its Speed, letting it potentially sweep an opposing team.
* Clanging Scales is a decently powerful move, hitting bulky threats such as Landorus-T and Mega Venusaur for neutral damage.
* Focus Blast covers Steel-types and is Kommo-o's strongest attack.
* Poison Jab hits most of the Fairy-types that resist Kommo-o's STAB moves. It deals solid damage to Tapu Koko and Tapu Lele, and it can OHKO most variants of Tapu Bulu.
* Earthquake can be used in the last slot to do more to Alolan Muk, Nihilego, Gengar, Tapu Koko, and Assault Vest Magearna. It also lets Kommo-o KO Heatran and Magnezone without relying on Focus Blast, although it loses coverage against most Fairy-types.
* Flash Cannon can be used in the last slot to 2HKO physically defensive Clefable as well as do large damage to Mimikyu. However, it does less to all of the Tapu group, meaning Poison Jab is almost always superior.

Set Details
========

* The Speed EVs allow Kommo-o to outspeed maximum Speed base 70s such as Bisharp and Breloom unboosted, as well as Choice Scarf Latios after an Autotomize boost.
* Maximum Special Attack investment and a Rash nature allow Kommo-o to hit as hard as possible with special attacks without lowering its Attack.
* The remaining EVs are placed in Attack to somewhat increase the damage done by Poison Jab.
* If no physical move is used, the remaining EVs should be placed in HP instead and a Modest nature should be used.
* Kommo-o has a few viable alternate spreads. With 160 Speed EVs and a Naive nature, Kommo-o will never be outsped and revenge killed by Modest Kingdra under rain after an Autotomize boost. With 180 Speed EVs and a Naive nature, Kommo-o will never be outsped by Adamant Sand Rush Excadrill under sand after an Autotomize. It also lets it outspeed Jolly Tapu Bulu and Jolly Mega Scizor while unboosted, letting Kommo-o revenge kill them if the situation demands it.
* A slower spread with more Attack investment can be used to deal more damage with a physical attack while still outspeeding a notable Choice Scarf user such as Tapu Lele or Garchomp.
* Bulletproof gives Kommo-o an immunity to a few relevant attacks, such as Gyro Ball from Ferrothorn and Sludge Bomb from Mega Venusaur.
* Life Orb increases Kommo-o's damage output and is the most viable choice for an item. Poisonium Z lets Kommo-o OHKO Tapu Koko and Tapu Lele, but the overall loss in power is not usually worth it.

Usage Tips
========

* This set is mainly used as a late-game cleaner, to outspeed everything and hit hard once Pokemon that resist its attacks are worn down enough.
* Early on, feel free to predict incoming Fairy-types and hit them with Poison Jab.
* When sweeping, don't rely on Focus Blast's shaky accuracy if Clanging Scales will do the trick.
* Similarly, avoid using Clanging Scales if Poison Jab can net a KO, as the associated Defense drop can hurt Kommo-o's longevity.
* Both of Kommo-o's STAB attacks only have 8 PP, so be careful not to use them all up early in a game.

Team Options
========

* Steel-types make excellent partners, as they can deal with the Fairy-types Kommo-o struggles with. Excadrill, Mega Metagross, and Magearna can switch in on and deal with threats to Kommo-o such as Tapu Lele or Tapu Koko.
* An Electric-type such as Tapu Koko or Rotom-W can deal with Tapu Fini and Celesteela, which trouble Kommo-o.
* Kommo-o appreciates entry hazard support from Stealth Rock or Spikes setters such as Landorus-T and Ferrothorn to wear down the opposing team and make sweeping easier.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Kommo-o can use Choice Specs to bolster the power of Clanging Scales, Focus Blast, and its coverage moves. It faces such fierce competition as a Choice Specs user from faster, stronger Dragon or Fighting types such as Hydreigon, Keldeo, or Latios that it is nearly entirely outclassed, though, and as such it generally shouldn't be used.
* Work Up can be used to boost the power of a special move and a physical move, but Kommo-o can't really give up the moveslot.
* Taunt can prevent defensive Pokemon from healing up on it, among other things. However, again, in using it, Kommo-o gives up valuable coverage or boosting moves.
* Sky Uppercut can be used to always 2HKO Chansey.
* It can use Swords Dance or Belly Drum for wallbreaking, but it's outclassed by stronger and faster wallbreakers like Terrakion and Garchomp.
* Kommo-o learns Dragon Dance, but there are too many Dragon Dance users in OU that do its job better than it. As a bulky Dragon Dance user Zygarde and Dragonite outclass it, and as an offensive one Salamence and Mega Charizard X have it beat.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-types**: Kommo-o cannot deal much damage to most Fairy-types with its STAB moves, and it takes huge damage from Fairy-type attacks due to its 4x weakness. Common Fairy types like Tapu Lele, Tapu Fini, Tapu Koko, and Magearna easily OHKO Kommo-o with Moonblast, Dazzling Gleam, or Fleur Cannon.

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Pokemon with good special bulk can take hits from Kommo-o and heal off the damage. Celesteela doesn't take much at all and can weak Kommo-o down with Leech Seed. Clefable and Tapu Fini take on all variants of Kommo-o in general and can heal up or hit back with Moonblast. Chansey can take a Focus Blast somewhat comfortably and proceed to inflict status. Mantine is bulky enough to take two Clanging Scales and heal up.

**Priority**: Kommo-o is generally resistant to priority due to its typing and high Defense stat, but certain priority users can hit it super effectively, like Mamoswine, Weavile, and Mega Pinsir. These can KO Kommo-o after a few turns of damage add up. Also, if Kommo-o uses Clanging Scales, the resulting Defense drops can lead it to being knocked out by priority more easily.

I think this is QC ready. I'm not expecting much cause it's Kommo-o, but it does have like the tiniest niche imo.

And if you're wondering where Choice Specs is, I opted not to include it for a few reasons, which I will outline here:
  • It's not very fast. 85 base speed is really mediocre. Notably, its closest competition which is probably Hydreigon, can achieve the same Speed with a Modest nature, and hits considerably harder.
  • It's ass.
  • It's not strong enough. The arguments people made about its power in the previous threads summed it up well. Two Clanging Scales from this mon are weaker than two Draco Meteors from any of Specs Hydreigon or Latios. If you make the argument that Clanging Scales is a spammable Dragon move, the truth is that it's only marginally stronger than the most spammable special Dragon move, Dragon Pulse.
  • 252 SpA Choice Specs Kommo-o Clanging Scales vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew: 225-265 (65.9 - 77.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 252+ SpA Choice Specs Hydreigon Dragon Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew: 222-262 (65.1 - 76.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • Of course Hydreigon will usually run a Timid nature, but the point is that Modest Hydreigon seems to really outclass this. I mean STAB Focus Blast is great but Kommo-o has less coverage than its competitors as well. At least Autotomize can run Poison Jab to hit most fairies hard.
If you think I'm wrong feel free to try and change my mind.

I would also mention in priority that Clanging Scales makes it easier to revenge kill as it lowers Kommo-o's Defense.

Solid otherwise.

Make sure to at least mention Specs in OO in order to clarify the immense competition it faces for the set with Hydreigon, for example, just for readers that might wonder where the set is and think they should go and use it anyway.

Congrats on finding any OU niche for this guy. I gave it a few days and couldn't come up with anything solid. The set you've got here looks like a job that isn't completely outclassed by the rest of the 600BST dragons.

An especially sad note is that Kommo-o's awesome-looking defense / Sp. Def stats are barely better than Garchomp's... because Kommo-o's low 75 HP grossly weakens its defense.

252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kommo-o: 175-208 (60.1 - 71.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Garchomp: 220-261 (61.6 - 73.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Adaptability Porygon-Z Tri Attack vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 247-291 (84.8 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Adaptability Porygon-Z Tri Attack vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 294-348 (82.3 - 97.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

------------

I'd bet that there are enough people out there making this mistake... so maybe a line like:

Low HP stat mitigate's Kommo-o's defensive stats. Its not any bulkier than Garchomp despite being much slower and weaker.

Or something similar?

I don't think that's necessary to put in an analysis. I wrote "solid natural bulk" cause in spite of the low HP, it's still solid overall, and comparing it to Garchomp is not really needed. At the same time, it's not like I'm overhyping its bulk, I'm simply mentioning here and there that it's "decently bulky"

How viable would be a spread of 208 Atk/ 172 SpA/ 128 SpD, Rock Polish instead of Autotomize and a Naughty nature? I tried it once and I got some decent sucess with it. It has just the right speed to outspeed Scarf Lele after the Speed Boost and has a 81.3% chance to OHKO without SR. SpA is lacking, but it's just enought to ensure KOs on almost all dragons.

Another possible spread could be something like 40 HP / 40 Atk / 252 SpA/ 176 Spe. It tradesspeed for some small bulk and power for Poison Jab, while at the same time outspeeding Scarf Chomp.

I added a line about using slower spreads to hit harder with a physical move. I'll leave the main spread the same as it outspeed a basically every scarfer which is cool, but tbt scarf latios is really uncommon so that much speed is really unnecessary usually. either way I would still run it for that extra insurance against all scarfers, it's only barely more than creeping scarf keldeo or scarf Kartana. At the same time being able to run more Attack investment helps you with certain things. I wouldn't run any less than max Special Attack though, you need all the power.

Also added Earthquake into move details. It 2hkos AV Alolan Muk and AV Magearna. Also OHKOs Gengar and Nihilego. Nihilego can sometimes dodge the 2HKO from Clanging Scales actually so this makes things a lot safer. You still maintain coverage against Koko which is cool, but now Tapu Bulu walls you and you only do like 50 to Lele.
