demotivational: the stopgap between gen 1 (unorganized, text added in paint) and gen2 (rage comic) memes. Then we had gen2.5 as rage became widespread as fuck, and gen3/3.5 as real impact memes moved in. I'd call gen 4 everything from 2013-2015. We are currently in gen 5, the era of webm, twitter memes, and vine. John cena would not be possible in gen4, it's amazing how far we have come. At last, in 2013 "LOL" humor became widely recognized as cringey.
