***[VOTE] The final Deoxys-S "discussion" thread***

Hmm, that's an interesting question.

I'm not sure I agree with your premise "slow metagame = more skill" though.

In regards to those high-paced sweeper teams, it often takes a LOT of prediction to get the exact sweeper you need in, especially when they have choiced sweepers, etc.

I might have say, CBCross. I figure that you may have a Hera counter of some sort. So I go to my Specsmence to pose an immediate threat to said Hera counter. Just a simpe example of how a pure offensive team take a good deal of skill to use.

There is a bit of skill to prediction of course, but among two skilled battlers it boils down to nothing but straight guesswork. Long term thinking requires much more flat-out skill than prediction does.

Could someone explain to me what this whole "Deoxys-s killed a playing style" argument is. There are still a lot of offensive or "glass cannon" teams out there. They still perform well. In fact deoxys-s fits on those teams extremely well! I was around before deoxys-s was unbanned and I'm still around now obviously, somehow I missed this trend.

I played a lot pre-Deoxys-S and post-Deoxys-S and I played well and I consider myself to be a top player in both periods.

I do not note a significant change.

Do you see how simply saying that means nothing?

What you, Iggybot, IPL and the like need to do is more effectively clarify what you mean by Deoxys-S reduces the viability of certain types of teams, because now even husk is asking what exactly you guys are talking about.

I might be too harsh or whatever the fuck (lol), but I am sure you can respect husk's confusion regarding this statement and clarify more.

OK, so far through this topic, Iggybot (and others) have talked about Deoxys-S reducing the viability of some type of offensive team. At this juncture, I am not going to say I agree or disagree, so leave comments like this...

Imperfectluck said:
I stated my perspective. You disagree. How about we leave it at that? I'm not sure how much more I'd need to clarify things in order for you to understand...

...out of any responses. Also, I'd prefer if Iggybot (and others) did not say "I've already stated it in the topic," (as seems to be a disturbing pattern) because A.) obviously the description was not sufficient, and B.) it's a pretty damn long topic, so perhaps it bears repetition at this point.

So far through this topic, the most detailed description I am getting about Iggybot's and IPL's blanket statement is that Deoxys-S reduces the viability of some type of offensive team. This topic has told me that Iggybot believes it is "sweeping offense." Well, I went on irc and #smogon, I found out that evidently Iggybot has not stated what he means, and that I was being unfair by not "assuming what he meant" or whatever. Ignoring that obviously preposterous comment for a bit, I am right now calling out Iggybot and asking him to explicitly and sufficiently both explain and define what he means.

Because evidently it is not this...

Iggybot said:
Despite what some of my previous posts look like, I am not complaining about my teams not being able to deal with Deoxys-S. My point isn't the fact that just a couple of teams can't deal with Deoxys-S, but a whole entire style team is incapable of dealing with Deoxys-S. These offensive teams that I'm referring to work by utilizing resistances to get in, and speed and attack to hit hard. They are essentially glass cannon teams, and yes, they are very viable. However, when Deoxys-S is most likely hitting at the very least, 4/6 pokemon for SE damage, and outspeeding the whole team, the very foundation of these teams is gone.

Well Iggybot, since on IRC last night you mentioned that I should have known what you meant, perhaps you should explicitly define it here, if that paragraph does not explicitly state what you mean.

IPL has also mentioned similar sentiments, as on IRC lastnight he mentioned "offensive teams that utilize resistances" as the style of team he was saying Deoxys-S reduces.

Well, I'll wait for a much more detailed explanation for this blanket statement (and in my opinion, a very irresponsible blanket statement without much more detailed explanation) before I say I agree / disagree.

@ Lyfasho, I'm agreeing with Iggy. I haven't seen a sweeping or scarfed Azelf in at least 2 months. I only ever see it with Stealth Rock and Explosion now. I see much less of Scarf Gengar, Heracross, and slightly less Scarf Heatran. But where is Weavile? Breloom? Electivire? Porygon-Z? They were all used a ton on glass cannon teams, but Deoxys-E put 2 of them out of a job and people realized Electivire sucks.
Actually, I just played against a team with a scarfed Azelf, and I've seen a bunch of Scarfed Azelfs over the past few months myself(Not so much the Nasty Plot sweeper though). I always felt that Eavile was overated, along with Electivire and Porygon-z. And about Breloom, I think Celebi's huge rise in Usage has been the main factor in Breloom's case, not Deoxys.

And I am also agreeing with Jabba and Bologo, that deoxys might be a good thing for the metagame because it is doing what we want, minimizing luck. Sweeper teams might be dominant without Deoxys, and I vaguely(Not really, actually very clearly) remember before Deoxys was unbanned when in the main chat I would hear everyday:"I hate Choice Scarf!!", "Stupid ScarfChomp, he's too good", "Choice Scarf takes skill away from the game", "I just lost to a choice scarf team, something should be done about that cheap item!", things along those lines. This is all assuming you are correct about the decline in Scarfers(Which there is no proof for atm), but the lack of scarfers could be a good thing.

What does Cosmic Power Deoxys have to do with banning it. Clefable can use Cosmic Power or a Calm Mind sweeper, if I switch in the wrong counter it will already have 2 cosmic power boosts, and it's bulkier with better typing! That set isn't broken at all. The set that is so controversial is the Late game sweeper, where he cleans up the remaining pokemon in the opponents team so easily. I will agree, that Deoxys is the best at cleaning up Late game, and I have used him to great success on the shoddy ladder, but just because he's the best at it doesn't mean he should be banned. Also, the player is executing his strategy of getting rid of Deoxys' counters and then sweeping with him. He should win in that case. It's no different than me executing my strategy of fooling Gliscor with my Ice Beam Tyranitar so I can set up a Lucario sweep. If I manage to do that, I executed my strategy first and I deserve to win. For these reasons, I believe that Deoxys should be OU

There is a bit of skill to prediction of course, but among two skilled battlers it boils down to nothing but straight guesswork. Long term thinking requires much more flat-out skill than prediction does.

Well, "sacrificing things" as you generally must do involves long-term thinking too. You have to think about what you need to keep alive to break through their defense versus what you want to let die. Say I have a Scarf Heatran with Explosion, and I'm having trouble getting through a Celebi/Vaporeon combination. I have no other fire moves on my team. I don't know the rest of the team (He has 5 pokemon left). If I explode and take out Vaporeon/Celebi, what might I end up losing to because I wasn't able to break through a bulky steel or something.

Thank you for making my point for me yourself. If Garchomp destroyed an ENTIRE style of play, he would have been banned already. He doesn't do that now and there is still the controversy to ban him.

How would you know? Apparently Deoxys - S is destroying an entire style of play. If Garchomp actually did the same, a similar discussion about it would be going on as well.

It doesn't even completely destroy the whole playing style; it destroys a team based solely on that style. Can an offensive team not be made that incorporates a bulky sweeper ( say Metagross) to counter Deoxys that is still based on the concept of switching in on resistances and immunities and revenge killing? I know Metagross does not have synergy with every offensive team, but in the same way, you can't just make a team that has a Garchomp weakness and stick Cresselia on it randomly.

To sum up, I believe Deoxys - S does not prevent people from using this style, rather it prevents people from making teams that contain only fast, frail sweepers, the key components of this style.

That has nothing to do with long term thinking though. Since offensive teams move so fast you often don't see your opponent's last pokemon until the last turn, there's no way to properly plan for the end of the match. How should I know that i should keep my Lucario when my opponent hasn't shown his snorlax yet? That's why it's nothing but a low skilled beatdown. I will admit that prediction takes some skill and that teambuilding is a very important process in making these teams. However I feel a metagame dominated by these teams may not be the perfect atmosphere.

Jabba, you can't say that at all. Frail offensive teams take a ton of skill to use just like any other kind of team, as a poor handler will get swept easily by an opponent with a clue. And whether the change in the metagame is good or bad, the significance is that he was a major part of the shift and you already agree about limiting team combinations.

They require immediate prediction, which I don't believe takes as much skill as long term thinking. That's just my opinion though.

Forgive me if my post is somewhat irrelevant to the topic, but from what I have gathered from reading the last few pages of this topic is that some of the best players of this game are actually promoting a Pokemon that requires rarely any skills to use.

Comparing Deoxys-E to Wobbuffet in my opinion is relevant to the point I am about to make. Many of the top players want to ban Wobbuffet because it removes skill from the game. Why then, are these same top players willing to play in a metagame where Deoxys-E can revenge-kill almost every top sweeper in the game? If the point of this metagame was to encourage skill, we should allow only Pokemon that fit the prototype. Deoxys-E requires no brain to use. Simply bring it in on any of the 480 or so Pokemon it is faster than, KO it, and repeat at will.

For this reason, I say Deoxys-E is Uber, for the sheer fact that it is the best late-game sweeper in the game, and promoting its usage is something that removes one of the reasons we play this game.

While some have been arguing that deoxys-e destroys offensive teams, there have been enough posts that suggest it limits the usage of choice scarfers or offensive sweepers. Quoting the second post on the topic, for instance :

This implies both that offensive teams have a much harder time to exist with Deoxys-E around AND that offensive sweepers (such as the ones I listed) become harder to use alltogether (see the bolded parts, specifically). While the former may be true, the latter clearly isn't.

Your statistics still don't prove your point because A.) they don't show the item or set that the pokemon is using and B.) never anywhere in IPL's post did he say that those offensive pokemon were declining in usage individually, but rather in the context of a team. I don't know what you're getting at.

For Aldaron: I will discuss this with you on IRC

You're ignoring the fact that your opponent could switch to something that can survive the hit. Also, you could say the exact same thing about every sweeper in existence.

1.Bring it in on something slower
2.Click a super effective move
4. opponent dies

Does it somehow require more skill in your mind to kill something faster than
you?

Opponent sent out heracross.
you send out gliscor
heracross used stone edge
gliscor used aerial ace
heracross has fainted

that took more skill than this then right?

Opponent sent out heracross.

You clearly don't understand the reason people say that wobba removes skill at all.

Nope your missing the point. Suppose you set up SubSalacChomp for a sweep, who is one of the fastest pokemon in the game at +1, only Timid Scarfgars are known to outspeed it. What TOF is saying is that all that work you used will be in vein because Deoxys-E will just end it. Then you can set up Gyarados for a sweep with +2 DDs... Deoxys-E ends it. If you switch, he still ended it. That's what TOF is getting at.

Deoxys-e fails to outspeed salac chomp unless it's (lol)max speed. Even if it does that's not "removing skill" it's just reducing the viability of a single set.

as funny as it is, ive seen deoxys outspeed my 250 speed kingdra in the rain before and finish it off. Some people max speed and special attack.

many people gear their deoxys to outspeed modest scarfgar, which means deoxys hits 479, which can be accomplished with 160 speed evs and a +nature if memory serves. also, subsalac chomp has to be jolly to outspeed standard deoxys, as the adamant ones only hit 459.

Deoxys-e fails to outspeed salac chomp unless it's (lol)max speed.

Just curious, but what is funny about being able to out speed a salac chomp? Max speed Deoxys-S isn't terrible, its absurdly fast and shuts done many stat uppers. Deoxys-S is faster then a large number of sweepers that could potentially Scarf themselves, and can pack any number of attack boosting items.

Deoxys-S essentially gets the best of both worlds for sweeping, not to mention a powerful tool in Taunt, a great move pool, and base 90 defenses.

I won't say Deoxys-S is as bad as Wobbuffet, as it has a clear disadvantage from it, allowing the other player to have a choice. But I do believe that Deoxys-S is one of the best sweepers in the game with its stat distribution and move pool. It outshines anything that wishes it was fast and wants to pop on a Scarf.

Sure, it can be handled by bulkier Pokes, but I believe Deoxys-S actually limits usable strategies by shifting the game to a more defensive position. It isn't like those Bulky pokes didn't have a place before, its just now the purely offensive ones have less of a place now (and fewer options).

i have played several high ranked players now who have outsped my max speed deoxys after 2 dragon dances with gyarados. this can be accomplished with an adamant nature. this spread also outspeeds base 125 baser's best efforts after just one DD, so it is well worth the investment for more than just deoxys if you're building a fast-paced, hard hitting team. so there ARE players who are already adapting, and winning.

earlier you said tihs proves your point somehow, because deoxys-s changes the game somewhat. but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. this game is all about adapting. if deoxys-s were just a new, non-legendary pokemon introduced in the 4th gen, you would have just dealt with him and added him to your threat list (at the top!) when designing your glass cannon team. so deal with him now!

No! Thats the whole point. Deoxys destroys certain team combinations. ONE pokemon destroys a viable team combination and strategy. NO other pokemon in OU can do that. It doesnt matter if thats good or bad its the fact that its happened. Garchomp influences more Ice Beams and HP Ices into the metagame. Is that good? Well it sure helps me deal with Salamence and Dragonite so its good! How the fuck does that correspond to the question of if that said pokemon is uber or not?

Except there is no reasonable way to counter Deoxys-Speed on a glass cannon team, so your entire post is telling him to use something that doesn't even exist (which is also the logic you and many supporters of Dexoys based your vote off of)

I don't have an opinion on this subject as my experience with Deoxys-E is far too limited to make a call, however there is one thing I've been wondering:

Have glass cannon teams (as jrrrrrrr put it) ever actually been viable?

I seem to remember at the start of D/P they were somewhat effective, everyone running around with Infernape and Weavile and Electivire etc, but didn't the metagame swiftly move away from that style of play anyway? Pretending for a moment that Deoxys-E is moved back to Uber, will running a team of glass cannons suddenly become viable again? I really don't think it will; iirc, people quickly realized that "all-out offense that can't take a hit" is ruined completely by anyone running a team bulky enough to take a hit or two. Even Aldaron's team - arguably the most well-known offensive team - had Swampert/Heatran/Hitmontop.

I may be right or I may be wrong (and feel free to tell me which), but assuming I'm on the right track for now, we're left with one question: Is making an entire style of play not viable even a problem when that style of play isn't any good to begin with?

I'd argue "no". If a Pokemon was created that, through a combination of stats and movepool, made Sunny Day teams in OU non-viable, would that be grounds for banning it? Sunny Day is hardly ideal in OU as it is, so if it was made even more ineffective than it already is thanks to this new hypothetical Pokemon, would there really be such an outcry?

Likewise, if glass-cannon-and-nothing-else dropped out of usage because it kind of sucks rather than because of Deoxys-E, does Deoxys' further stomping of it really matter in the end? If it's not effective even without Deoxys-E, but is even less so when he's around, then I'd argue that the damage to the metagame in this particular regard is either completely nil, or entirely negligible.

I may be totally wrong with some of my observations (I didn't Shoddy all that much early-D/P), so just disregard this if I'm way off base.

And at that point was when Deoxys was official unbanned or some time around that. So the answer is, yes, all offensive teams did always work beforehand.

I don't have an opinion on this subject as my experience with Deoxys-E is far too limited to make a call, however there is one thing I've been wondering:

Have glass cannon teams (as jrrrrrrr put it) ever actually been viable?

The simple answer to this is "yes". I personally used a glass cannon team to get to #1 on the shoddy ladder before Deoxys-Speed was introduced and I know I wasn't the only one to do it. I can paste it here if enough people want to see an example of the glass cannon teams that I have been talking about, or if you want to see it you can just PM me. The basic outline of it is: LorbMence with 4 attacks/DDGyara/Sleep&Sweep Gallade/CBHera/Specs Starmie/SDLorbChomp (this was before Yache was thought of)

edit- thank you Aeroblacktyl for addressing this much more thoroughly with those logs

The metagame did shift slightly, but in my observation it did not start doing so until after the introduction of Deoxys. Aldaron's team was offensive, but not in the glass cannon form of offense. Swampert, Heatran and Hitmontop are not glass cannons. They are very sturdy and provided a solid defensive foundation so that his priority attacks could whittle away at the opponent.

I may be right or I may be wrong (and feel free to tell me which), but assuming I'm on the right track for now, we're left with one question: Is making an entire style of play not viable even a problem when that style of play isn't any good to begin with?

"that style of play isn't any good to begin with" is entirely subjective. That style of play is very good to me, personally, along with many others. Even if it was not a good style of play, would completely eliminating it be justified?

I'd argue "no". If a Pokemon was created that, through a combination of stats and movepool, made Sunny Day teams in OU non-viable, would that be grounds for banning it? Sunny Day is hardly ideal in OU as it is, so if it was made even more ineffective than it already is thanks to this new hypothetical Pokemon, would there really be such an outcry?

Sunny Day teams are different in the sense that there are ways to counter them without having to limit your own team's offensive ceiling. You could just use any Fire-type, for example. Chlorophyll pokemon can also be beaten by Choice Scarfers. Sunny Day boosted Fire moves can be beaten with a water type. These are all normal things to have, whereas placing Bronzong or Cresselia is not commonplace on a "glass cannon" form of offense and is really limiting to the design of certain teams.

Yes, if stall was ever actually able to overtake hyper-offensive play then Deoxys-Speed would just be icing on the cake. Unfortunately this isn't the case, D-S played a huge role in the decline of these teams. Lets look at the shoddy usage list, shall we?
  1. Garchomp (54486271 points)
  2. Gengar (44895630 points)
  3. Blissey (43662002 points)
  4. Gyarados (40781829 points)
  5. Tyranitar (40712470 points)
  6. Bronzong (38561213 points)
  7. Lucario (33603937 points)
  8. Heatran (32296203 points)
  9. Infernape (28406707 points)
  10. Salamence (28394085 points)
  11. Metagross (27920032 points)
Of the top 11 most used pokemon, only 2 of them are consistently used as walls. Stall has *still* not taken over offense completely. The fact that offense still exists, but glass cannon teams do not is the determining factor in deciding whether or not Deoxys-Speed is killer to an entire viable style of play. I believe this to be evidence of its overcentralizing of the metagame.

MoP, that team is not a glass cannon team. How is a team with Metagross, Garchomp and Tyranitar a glass cannon team ?_?

Also Jrrrrrrr, I never remember you getting to #1 with that team =/

I remember you getting to #1 with the ScarfZapdos team. And while I certainly do not want to make this a discussion of your team, that team seems extraordinarily poorly put together. It has almost no method of dealing with ScarfChomp (the most popular Chomp before Deoxys-S) + Stealth Rock, has more weaknesses than resistances to Electric and Ice attacks (how common are BoltBeam), and of course, the complete susceptibility to Yanmega / Togekiss is a huge issue O_O

Did that really make it to number 1? It seems to have plenty of issues before Deoxys-S (though it sure looks like Shadow Ball, Psychic, Thunderbolt Ice Beam Deoxys-S does a number to you :P)

Except there is no reasonable way to counter Deoxys-Speed on a glass cannon team, so your entire post is telling him to use something that doesn't even exist (which is also the logic you and many supporters of Dexoys based your vote off of)

Okay, so then why SHOULD you be able to win with a team of 6 guys who are weak to the fastest threat in the game? You act like this is a god-given right and if this isn't the case, then something is wrong.

Trick room teams often need a fast guy or two for those in-between times. Rain teams, sun teams... all themed teams can all benefit from a member or two without the shared weakness. So why cant you fill our your themed team with a bit more balance? It's a strategy game for crying out loud, you need to use what will win, not just what you want to use. why is having to build a more balanced team seen as a bad thing? Why is it a bad thing that I can't win with 6 Deoxys-weak pokemon if i want to? Or with an all-out kamikaze pawn offense in Chess if i want to?

Also, glass cannon teams have ALWAYS faced the problem of having that one pokemon on their team that is faster than their remaining members (or randomly scarfed) and can threaten a late game sweep. If you have a non-scarfed infernape, gengar, and salamence left, does it matter if their last pokemon was a life orbed aerodactyl with earthquake, crunch, and ice fang, an Alakazam with Psychic and HP Ice, a Scarfed Outrage Garchomp, or a life obed deoxys with psychic and ice beam?

I got there twice, that ScarfZap team was the second one (which ipl also used to get to #1). If you want to count the team I made for Mystica that she got to #1 with, that makes three :D </irrelevant bragging>

The team *does* have a way of getting around Yanmega, ScarfChomp (which was not the most popular at the time. ScarfChomp's rise in usage was much of the reason why I decided to use a Steel-type on my next team), and Togekiss. I simply hit them so hard that they couldn't set up. I needed to get 1 KO in a match and then all I needed to do was roll downhill since everything I had could hit pretty much everything else hard enough to throw it into desperation mode. Togekiss isn't going to try to come in and sweep if Heracross is throwing around STAB CB Close Combats.

In short, I could "play around" those threats even though you're right, my team would never last more than 30 turns in a match because the only defense invested is in the resistances. I only need that Electric resist once, because if I let the boltbeamer come in more than once then I have done something wrong anyways. Deoxys does not give the option of "playing around" it, you are forced to carry a counter for it since you can't back it into a corner with revenge killing.

Deoxys has the unique property among threats in the fact that its movepool lets it ignore the resistances that these otherwise defensively capable teams utilize instead of sheer numbers. Yes, these teams are vulnerable to late-game sweeper types, but the whole point in using them is to prevent them from ever setting up. If you lose to a SubSalac Chomp with one of these teams, its because you predicted incorrectly and allowed it to set up on you. Deoxys removes skill by being faster than everything AND ignoring resistances, this allows it to require no prediction to use very effectively. It is a "no risk, high reward" pokemon. Sure, you switched your Garchomp into my Thunderbolt. Now you have to live through an Ice Beam because there is no way that you can force me into a corner where I either have to switch or get KOd with the glass cannon style. Limiting team building concepts by requiring people to carry "more balancing" (read: tanks [which then can lose to the PressureStall set]) pokemon is centralizing by definition.

And to answer your theorymon question, yes, it is different. That Aerodactyl can be played around by switching to Mence on the EQ, back to Ape on the Ice Fang, then back to Mence for another intimidate. Let it kill something, and then the -2 Aero can not OHKO Gengar and will lose. That is actually a great example of the point I'm trying to illustrate. Unlike in the Aerodactyl situation, that team of 3 would lose to Deoxys every single time without fail unless the Gengar is Timid Scarf, which has seen a huge increase in popularity for reasons that I suspect relate to the potentially centralzing nature of a certain DNA Pokemon...The fact that it does it without potential for failing is the larger argument here. I feel that a failproof pokemon does not reward skillful players, it acutally makes skill more obsolete (even if it is only failproof against one style of play).
