1.) Open Mouth or Closed Mouth?

2.) Burrowing/In the ground or On the surface?

3.) Main Color? Brown/Steel-ish Grey
Kai, you've been helpful to a lot of people in this thread, I respect you. To answer your questions:
1) Definitely open mouth. When his mouth is closed, its like he's screaming on the inside. Let him shout!

2) On the surface, so we can see all of him. It also makes him look a bit more grand in that sense.

3) Color can be one of the hardest things to choose, just remember there is also a shiny sprite avaliable! Brown for sure, its the tones that make it seem Ground.

You had it spot on at the beginning pretty much, but there's not enough ornamental design to it. Many possible things: Spikes; patterns; aura, try experimenting.

Thanks for the help Elegy.

I also agree with Xaqwais. Themutant, your liony thing should defenitaly be a mix of the colors. You brown is a little dull and your red is way to bright. Mix! Mix! Mix! ^-^

Obviously based off of a pyramid. No one is quite sure what the Pokemon inside looks like other than its arms and eyes, as it just closes up its "shell" if anyone happens to sneak a look.

It gets around by digging, which is a whole lot faster than dragging itself around with its big hands.

Feedback works

@Nardd: Nice concept. The bulky body seems a little too... Bulky. If it's going to be burrowing, have the hands be like one claw and the bottom have a spike or something. Other than that, just clean it up mostly. Little messy, but good job.

@GreatMind: Actually, I like none of the above. I think your old red-orange and grey scheme was the best. Also, your last one (bottom-right) looks almost green. Make it more tan'y and it would look pretty cool for a shiny! :)

Tortferngatr, I'm really liking your new design. It'd be cool if you could put more detail into it and smooth it out. Good job!

Thank you! Well, at least it's more commentary than the mole! (BTW: Fixed typo. It's Tortferngatr, as in Torterra, Infernape, Feraligatr, the names of the final forms of my starters/to be, not Tortferngator.)

Anyways, remake of the kangaroo as ordered:

I decided to include some edge spikes on the feet, just to make its cleat feet (which are its main way of channeling ground attacks) a little more obvious. I played around with line thickness a little more, too. In addition, I tried to make it feel a bit more aboriginal. Hence, in addition to the extra lines I added, I included a reference to a famous aboriginal cave painting on its shields, and a little mouth on its abdominal armor, to make it look like a tribal mask. (I also make its waist a little bulkier, modified the snout, and shifted the position of the chest armor.) Also note the inclusion of gradients, which I was hesitant to use originally because of the fact I'd used them liberally on my Mole, to the point I actually had to ask about whether it fit the rules or not....

BTW, should I save him in PNG instead of JPEG from now on? JPEG ruins some thin lines, but I heard it's usually a better format...

Alright, one more thing before I start preparing my final. Should the Armor, horns and tail of Monkeymon be the skin color or should they be steel grey?
An example with the copied color:
BAM
The original steel grey armor:
SLAM

I made the eyes light yellow, I hope that was an improvement.

Here is my first design. As you can tell, I was going for an evolution to Donphan. But it looks alot like Mamoswine right now. I'm working on a better image for it. I also have an idea for a dark version of Claydol, but I'm waiting to see how the style bias turns out before working on it. I figure this would be for physical, and the dark Claydol for special. What do you think so far?
elephan.jpg

BTW: The Pokemon in question is going to be entirely separate from the official mons. We aren't doing evolutions. If you can make him resemble something separate from Donphan or Mamoswine, then go for it.

Once again, Kangaroo commentary?

Updated SandCastle.

My comments toward others:

Elegy, I prefer the skin-armor color.

SkyteAero, try to differentiate him from existing Pokemon.

GreatMindLizard, I like your supporting art, but not your main pose. It seems a bit awkward. Perhaps you could try a different pose? (and I like your first or fourth color schemes)

DracoYoshi8, right now it seems a bit too realistic, and more poison than dark.

TortfernGATR, would it be too much to ask for some other poses?

It seems that in my absence many great ideas just kept overflowing into the thread!

<Narwhal <3 >
A few more sketches. They're based on a Chupacabra, a pot, and a narwhal. Also I haven't abandoned the ant-eater. I'm just cycling through ideas right now.

While it may not really fit the design, or garner much support, I fell in love with your Narwhal. I really don't have any valid reasoning for it, other than I saw it and it just clicked with me.

<Cyclone>
Well, made the colors a little better and added the flying debris/dirt within the black smokey dust just like you wanted. I think it looks better personally. Great ideas and suggestion, keep them coming! Thanks!

This is turning out to be quite a contender. This is just my opinion, but I believe it would fit much more viably if you added "Hands". Much like a few others have been doing, instead of just clumps of sharp rocks, give it digging-esque claws. I also think the top portion of head spikes could be elongated, while the smoke could be streamlined a bit. As I said, though, these are just my takes on what I can picture in my head.

I can easily see your concept withdrawing it's smoke-like body into the ground, leaving only it's sharpened areas exposed, and tunneling around much like Diglett.

Ok, after a major visit to the design workshop, I have settled on one I'm happy with.

I loved the Hyenamon, I really did. I also loved my WolfHorse from CaP4. So like any other parent, I took my kids and smooshed them together to create one super baby! What's that? Parents don't usually do that? Oh...

Well anyway, this "new" design combines attributes from those two designs and tweaks them to fit in our scope here. The end result is a Pokemon with a nimble body for making agile and swift movements, as well as powerful legs and claws for burrowing and escaping in a pinch.

Like most dark types, This bugger is an ambush predator; easily using the cover of darkness to pursue and overwhelm its prey. During the day, it burrows underground and rests. To protect itself while digging, its limbs have been naturally reinforced with a thick carapace which provides a means of defense as well as enhanced digging strength.

The long tail serves a few uses. Like most sprinting animals, it serves as a means of balance whilst running. The tuft of fur at the end can also be flicked around at a rapid rate and is often used for fanning in the dry arid heat as well as kicking up a sandstorm in an effort to escape would-be attackers. The tail is also very flexible and can be used in a whip-like manner to attack.

The color scheme is still in the air for the moment, but I'm happy with it thus far. The body stripes are only there for aesthetic reasons, like in Zangoose's case.

I can honestly say that I am not dissapointed. The color scheme works with the picture flawlessly, conveying a sense of Dark and Ground in both it's demeanor and color. It seems my patience was rewarded with another excellent idea from you. :)

Are there any plans for a picture in which his mouth would be open? I am curious as to exactly what kind of teeth he has. It seems like it would fit to have rows upon rows of jagged ones, or it could just be an abyss. My curiosity has been brought forth though.

I came into this gem as I was browsing through the pages. While it seems very heavy and cumbersome, I absolutely love the way it was depicted. Definitely a thumbs up from me. I believe I saw the comment somewhere else... not sure, though. However, I believe he could do with some brushing up. Mainly with the colors. I feel the colors perfectly depict his typing already, but they are very basic. The brown spots, mainly, I feel could be cleaned up to make it a top contender for the final spot.

Nice, Darkchicken...I may want a little bit more...sandy...walls, but otherwise this is one of the most creative, cool entries yet! (Doesn't quite fit the Stat Bias, though...)

Anyways, what do you think of revised Evilroo, everyone?

Tort, the ears really shouldn't be attached like polygons, they're flesh and should be connected as such.

If you're making it a Kangaroo, then think about the anatomy of one. Kangaroos' legs are connected by bone, they can't be separated and that's why Kangaroo's move their legs synchronized. Yet yours has its legs apart. Also, Kangaroos arms are short and close to the body, yet yours are spread out far.

I honestly didn't see a Kangaroo when I first looked at it, but maybe with a couple anatomical corrections it would reveal itself... as a Kangaroo.

BTW Thanks for the shaded eye suggestion, it helped.

Oh neat CAP9 started.

Lack of image quality/size/colour etc. is due to lack a of scanner, coloured pen(cil)s and own computer for that matter...

As for an explanation about the design... Pretty simple, Cubone justifies bone=ground, and possibly it can be reflected in eventual colouring (which I haven't decided on yet, suggestions are welcome). Plus I can easily see this thing digging with its thicker fingers/toes. Dark should speak for itself... I mean it is dragging around an entire spine, skull and bone-claws. Plus it keeps its body low to the ground, I think that pretty much reflects the sinister theme Sneasel and Murkrow got going for them.

Issue atm is that I have limited resources. I can get myself some colouring material if this thing gets any support, possibly bribe a friend into letting me use a scanner. But if someone feels generous and wants to colour it, feel free to.

OK, cleaned up as requested. I also made the hands more claw-like, though it digs top-to-bottom, point down (like a drill). That way, it has more grounddynamics and can just tuck up into its pyramid to go under.

I'm actually pretty happy with this, and will get a drawing showing how it digs and PURSUITs an enemy.

@ GreatMindLizard
The first color scheme is your best, but mostly because of the sandy color used. You could put in onto the blue and purple ones to really see which is better. Also, try to outline the neck from the body a little, as it looks really fluffy now, almost like it doesn't have a neck. Also, you could (maybe) add some lines to distinguish the fur, like you did on the legs, as it looks too 2-dimensional. I love the concept though.

@DracoYoshi8: Realism is fine, just not my cup of tea. I just don't think it feels like a pokemon, which is a moot point, I guess. And it's probably the color scheme that suggests poison, which is also irrelevant.

Anyway, those are my two cents, but by all means keep it however you like.

Yeah...then again, Elegy, anglerfish don't have two lures, hippopotamuses aren't very vulnerable to water and don't shoot sand out of their backs, eggs cannot survive a direct hit from a bolt of lightning, earthquakes are lethal seismic phenomena instead of a mere attack move, and a lot of creatures don't actually stand up on their hind legs. And weasels/wolverines don't exactly have long appendages, either...or feathers, for that matter...yet Weavile isn't really bashed much on that.

In short, this is Pokemon and we have a "creative nonsense" license.

evilroo_remake2.png

However, I am making some changes anyway...legs aren't changing, as quite honestly it functions as a Pokemon Coconut Effect, plus this guy has design inputs BESIDES kangaroos, but I did shorten the arms (thank God for Powerpoint art,) and make the ears a bit more firmly attached (though I used the same shapes, they look a little bit less like polygons.) I also made 2 small armor pieces on its hips, just because the design looked a tad inconsistent without something covering there. I also saved it as a PNG this time, for comparison to JPEG to see which is better.

Please comment?!

Wow, Nardd, that's wonderful! Go with this design!

@Nardd: Love it. Arms still seem a little messy and the claws could always get sharper. Other than that? Awesome!

@Bird: Sexy. Lol. Each picture got better. :D

Since evolutions are not permitted, here is something I just came up with. The hand is supposed to be sand. Which I was trying to make fingers, but it failed. With the hand I want sand to be falling off of it, but I want those fingers first.

What do you think?

:)

Since my first concept was too "Rock", I created another. This was originally inspired by a Roly-Poly Snake, but now I realise that it is more of a milipede.

It has a dark, sluglike texture to its main body, allowing dirt and mud to stick to its back, creating a shell. The eye and fang patterns are obviously there for intimidation of foes. (Note: this does not mean Intimidate is its ability; example, Scizor's claws are made to look like extra heads and it doesn't have Intimidate.) Its body is vlexible enough to allow it to roll up and wheel itself around. While rolled up, it can perfectly control its body, and can thus do stunts like useing its tail as a springboard, and then unraveling itself in midair.

So, here it is, (insert random WIP name here) / RPS (Roly-Poly-Snake)

C+C is highly smiled upon, as one can clearly see.

If this is too big, just delete the pic please, and I'll fix later. Don't delete the entire post please.
