Chimchar

--------

[Overview]

Chimchar has a great movepool, with access to stat boosting moves such as Swords Dance, Nasty Plot, and Flame Charge, but it is held back by its mediocre stats. Chimchar does, however, make a great lead, because it can either set up Stealth Rock, or deal massive damage to the opponent's lead with a combination of Fake Out and/or Overheat. However, after using Overheat, Chimchar will be left at a disadvantage, because it can either be easily revenge killed or set up on, since its Special Attack is cut in half. Team Preview has not been kind to Chimchar either, since the opponent will see Chimchar as a lead and rearrange his Pokemon accordingly to give it an outright disadvantage. Chimchar still makes a great lead though, and is not to be underestimated.

[SET]
name: Classic Chimp
move 1: Fake Out
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Overheat / Fire Blast
move 4: Hidden Power Grass / Taunt / Protect
item: Focus Sash / Life Orb
ability: Blaze
nature: Hasty
evs: 4 HP / 56 Atk / 216 SpA / 4 SpD / 188 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This is Chimchar's most effective set, where it plays the role of a "suicide lead". Chimchar can either set up Stealth Rock quickly, or deal massive damage to the opponent's lead. Fake Out breaks opponents' Focus Sashes or Sturdy, allowing you to KO them with Overheat, which hits very hard thanks to its high Base Power and STAB. However, the Special Attack drop can be problematic, because some Pokemon can take advantage of it by setting up on or revenge killing Chimchar. Hidden Power Grass is useful for hitting the pesky Water-type Pokemon who resist Overheat for super effective damage. The EVs are quite simple; max out Chimchar's Speed and Special Attack to improve its usefulness as a lead. Luckily for Chimchar, it needs only 4 EVs to raise its HP and Special Defense stats by 1 point each. The remaining EVs are invested into Attack to increase Fake Out's power.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Team Preview can sometimes give Chimchar a bad lead matchup, so sometimes it is counterproductive to use it as your first Pokemon. For this reason, a Life Orb can be used instead of a Focus Sash. The extra power is welcomed, and if you neglect to use Chimchar as your lead, there is a good chance that it will take damage from entry hazards and lose its Focus Sash when it does switch in. Additionally, Fire Blast can be used instead of Overheat for more consistent damage, because if Chimchar is used mid-game, it won't be acting as a suicide lead, and will appreciate the absence of the Special Attack drop. Taunt is a good option for stopping other leads that try to set up their entry hazards or dual screens. Protect is a another option to prevent faster leads with Fake Out, such as Meowth, Aipom, and Buneary from breaking your Focus Sash.

[Other Options]

Nasty Plot can be used to some success since Chimchar has access to a special priority attack in Vacuum Wave, but Ghost-type Pokemon will stop Chimchar cold thanks to their Fighting-type immunity. U-turn can be used for scouting, but finding a moveslot for it can be difficult. Flame Charge can be used to attempt a sweep; reaching 22 Speed after a boost, Chimchar can pose a threat to Pokemon that it wouldn't have before. However, Chimchar is very fragile, and is weak to priority, which gives it a hard time sweeping. Endeavor is an interesting move which Chimchar can use fairly well once it has been brought down to 1 HP, courtesy of its Focus Sash; it can then bring opposing Pokemon down to 1 HP too, making them easy to pick off. While Chimchar is a bit too slow for the Endeavor strategy, it can work well against opponents bringing in a counter to a predicted Overheat.

[Checks and Counters]

Fake Out leads, such as Meowth, Aipom, and Buneary, can break Chimchar’s Focus Sash, outspeed it, and KO it with their STAB attacks. Diglett is a problem since it can prevent Fake Out with Protect and bring Chimchar down to its Focus Sash with Earthquake. In this case, Chimchar must choose between setting up Stealth Rock or bringing Diglett down to its own Focus Sash with Overheat. Once Chimchar's Special Attack has been cut after an Overheat, many setup sweepers can take advantage of it. Dragon-type Pokemon such as Dratini and Bagon can freely set up with Dragon Dance, since they resist Fire-type attacks.

[Dream World]

Iron Fist is a nice ability, boosting the power of Chimchar's "punching" moves. But unfortunately, Iron Fist Chimchar is illegal in Little Cup.

Im no expert but for the fourth move i would suggest either u-turn or brick break. if your facing a dual screens lead then brick break might come in handy. but u-turn could also come in use because you could keep chimchar in as a late game scout. if you arent satisfied with either then just use hidden power grass

hope it helps :3

Scouting is useless this gen because of team preview, so U-Turn isn't gonna be the first option there. And Bronzor is pretty much the only screener in LC and he gets demolished by Overheat.

U-Turn / Protect / HP Grass / Taunt / Vacuum Wave.
Help me pick 2 / 3 of them guise :(

brick break is a no-no unless you have a genuine need to remove screens, and on a lead, there's really no point.
One thing, Chimchar gets swords dance and nasty plot, isn't there anything you can do with them?

No, it's far too frail and only has 16 speed so there isn't much that can be done there....

that is true.

Problem that I'm seeing is that if there's only a lead set, it loses viability. With team preview, it's difficult to have a consistent pokemon that you're going to use as your lead 100% of the time

Good Point. But doesn't match up horribly against many Pokemon. It will either get Stealth Rock up or cause massive damage.

Perhaps I'll rename it "Stealth Rock" but I want to get some more opinions about that first.

move 4: Taunt / Protect / HP Grass / U-Turn / Vacuum Wave (HELP! ;o;)

HP Grass/Taunt

HP Grass is really necessary to kill pesky Water-types, and hitting Rocks and Grounds isn't exacly detrimental.

Taunt is cool for stopping SRers. Gen 5 brought a lot of good hazarders, but they're all pretty slow, bar a few like centipede thing (which is fire weak).

Protect is redundant with Fake Out and its boosted priority. If you come up against a faster FOer, switch. It's not worth the utility of Taunt or the coverage of HP Grass.

U-turn is great usually, but Chimchar is SR weak and takes Spikes and Tspikes damage, and Kojofu kinda does the Fake Out+U-turn schtick a lot better. OC mention, or third slash.

Also, if you rename it, slash on LO. Chimchar will be taking hazards and weather damage, so sash is useless, and LO is neat for the power boost.

Similarly, slash Fire Blast with Overheat, as Chimchar doesn't need the power to kill common leads if it isn't a lead itself, and Fire Blast does more damage over two turns.

Vacuum Wave isn't necessary. Fake Out kills sashes. Although a possible revenging set could be used with LO, Fake Out, and Vwave, going mixed kills the power, and Meditite kinda does that better. It's also, again, SR weak.

NP and SD and Cheer Up in OC. NP's the best, +2 vwave hurts some would-be revenge killers.

HP Ice in OC to kill Gligar and dragons.

[Overview]

Chimchar has a great movepool, with access to stat boosting moves such as Swords Dance, Nasty Plot and Nitro Charge, but is held back by its mediocre stats. Chimchar does, (add comma) however, make a great lead, because it generally can either set up Stealth Rock, and failing that, or deal massive damage to the opponent's (add apostrophe) lead with a combination of Fake Out and STAB Overheat. However, after using Overheat, Chimchar can will be left at a disadvantage, because it can either be easily revenge killed or set up against on with its Special Attack cut in half. Team Preview has not been kind to Chimchar either, because since the opponent can see him as a lead and arrange his Pokemon accordingly, giving Chimchar a bad matchup will find out that Chimchar is a lead and accordingly rearrange his Pokemon to give it a bad matchup. Overall, Still, Chimchar still makes a great lead in this generation, and is not to be underestimated.

[SET]
name: Classic Chimp (Lead)
move 1: Fake Out
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Overheat / Fire Blast
move 4: Hidden Power Grass / Taunt / Protect
item: Focus Sash / Life Orb
ability: Blaze
nature: Hasty
evs: 4 HP / 56 Atk / 216 SpA / 4 SpD / 188 Spe
(you anyway mention that this is a suicide lead in the first sentence of SC; don't make the title too large.)
[SET COMMENTS]

This is Chimchar's most effective set, where it plays the role of a suicide "lead". It is very successful at getting Stealth Rock up and/or dishing out massive damage Chimchar can either set up Stealth Rock quickly, or deal massive damage to the opponent's lead. Fake Out is good for breaking breaks the Focus Sashes or Sturdy of other leads such as Dwebble or and Pineco, allowing you Chimchar to KO them with Overheat or scare them away, giving it the opportunity to while you set up Stealth Rock. Overheat hits very hard thanks to its high Base Power and which is further boosted by STAB. However, the Special Attack drop can be problematic, because some Pokemon can take advantage of it by setting up on or revenge killing Chimchar. Hidden Power Grass is useful for hitting hits the pesky water Water-type Pokemon who that resist Overheat for super effective damage. The EVs are quite simple, maxing out Chimchar's Speed and Special Attack to improve its usefulness as a lead. Luckily for Chimchar, it needs as little as only 4 EVs to raise its HP and Special Defense stats by 1 point each. The remaining EVs are invested into Attack to increase Fake Out's power.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Team Preview can sometimes give Chimchar a bad lead matchup and sometimes makes thus make it counterproductive to use it as your first Pokemon "lead". Because of this For this reason, a Life Orb can be used over instead of a Focus Sash. The extra power is appreciated welcome, and since if you neglect to use Chimchar as your lead, there is a good chance that it will take Entry Hazard damage from entry hazards and lose its Focus Sash when it does switch in. Additionally, Fire Blast can be used in the place of Overheat for more consistent damage., since if Chimchar is used mid-game, it won't act like a suicide lead, and will thus appreciate the absence of a Special Attack drop(join the two sentences). A Life Orb will make up for the drop in power.(You already mentioned that Life orb is an item option if Chimchar isn't used as a lead) Taunt is also great in the last slot, and is useful for a good option in the last moveslot, as it helps in stopping other leads who that try to set up their entry hazards or dual Screens. Protect is another good option to prevent faster leads with Fake Out, such as Meowth, Aipom and Buneary, from breaking your Focus Sash, such as Meowth, Aipom and Buneary. (shift the list of such Pokemon to the middle of the sentence)

[Team Options]

One Pokemon that always causes poses Chimchar problems is Diglett. With Arena Trap, Diglett traps Chimchar and will always win against it can effectively trap and revenge kill Chimchar. Dragon-type Pokemon and Gligar can also set up on Chimchar once it has used Overheat. For these reasons, Snover with a Choice Scarf Snover makes a great partner for Chimchar because as it can outspeed and revenge kill the mentioned Pokemon once Chimchar has been KOed Diglett once Chimchar has been KO'd. Also, Snover can hit Dragon types and Gligar with STAB Blizzard for super-effective damage. Snover can also switch in, resistant to Water-type attacks too, which is great synergy for Chimchar into the Water-type attacks which Chimchar sports a weakness to. Bronzor resists Dragon-type attacks, is immune to Earthquake and resists all of Gligar's other moves, making him it (you have used "it" to refer to Pokemon elsewhere in this analysis. Both are fine, but be consistent in what you use to refer to Pokemon.) a great partner for Chimchar.

[Optional Changes]

Nasty Plot can be used to some success because of special priority since Chimchar has access to a special priority attack in the form of Vacuum Wave, but Ghosts-type Pokemon will stop Chimchar thanks to their Fighting-type immunity. U-turn (it is U-turn) can be used for useful scouting, but finding a moveslot for it can be difficult. The strategy is to use U-Turn as they bring in their Chimchar counter and you switch to your according counter, giving you the upper hand (everyone knows how you use U-turn. No need to elaborate on this). Nitro Charge gives Chimchar a much appriciated speed boost can be used to attempt a sweep. Reaching 22 Speed, it Chimchar can now pose quite a threat to Pokemon that it wouldn't have before normally. However, Chimchar is very fragile, and is weak to priority attacks, which gives it a hard time sweeping. Endeavour is an interesting move which Chimchar can use fairly well another a cool move that Chimchar can pull off (This is not a magazine article where you can say "cool", "awesome" etc.). Once you Chimchar has been brought down to 1 HP courtesy its Focus Sash the sash, you it can bring opposing Pokemon down to 1 HP (space) too, making them easy to pick off. While Chimchar is a bit too slow to make great use of it, it can work against opponents bringing in a counter to a predicted Overheat.

[Counters]

Fake Out leads, such as Meowth, Aipom, and Buneary, can all break Chimchar’s Focus Sash, and then outspeed it and KO it with a their STAB attacks. Diglett is a problem since it can prevent Fake Out with Protect and bring Chimchar down to its Focus Sash with Earthquake. In this case, Chimchar must chose between setting up Stealth Rock or bringing Diglett down to its own Focus Sash with Overheat. Ultimately, Chimchar will lose against opposing Diglett though. Once Chimchar's Special Attack has been cut after an Overheat, many set up (space) sweepers can take advantage of it. Gligar with an Evolution Stone Gligar won't take much from Overheat after a Special Attack drop, and can proceed to set up Swords Dance. Dragon-type Pokemon such as Dratini and Bagon can set up Dragon Dances because since they resist Fire-type attacks.

[Dream World]

Iron Fist is a neat ability nice ability, giving Chimchar a power boost on its punching moves boosting the power of Chimchar's "punching" moves. But unfortunately, Iron Fist Chimchar is illegal in Little Cup. Poor Chimchar, he'll have to stick to blasting Pokemon with boosted Fire-type attacks!

_________________________________________________________________________

Some things to remember, in general:
(1)Capitalisation. Remember, it is Base Power, Special Attack etc.

(2)Water-type, Grass-type etc. The type name should be followed by "-type"

(3) Don't use prose like,"xyz is this cool move that Chimchar can pull off." This is an analysis, not a debate about why Chimchar is so awesome.

(4)Be consistent in referring to Pokemon as "who" & "he", or "it" and "that".

I hope this helps. I will try and provide a c&p version later. Good luck with this analysis.

I'm not on the GP team but I'll check this for you anyway.

In this case, Chimchar must chose choose between setting up Stealth Rock or bringing Diglett down to its own Focus Sash with Overheat. Once Chimchar's Special Attack has been cut after an Overheat, many setup sweepers can take advantage of it. Evolution Stone Eviolite Gligar won't take much from a -2 Overheat after a Special Attack drop, and can proceed to set up with Swords Dance.

Remember, Nitro Charge is now Flame Charge. You're going to have to go through and make sure everything is up to date with the American names.
