Cubchoo

Ice-type

Coca-Cola anyone?
Tissue please.

[Overview]
  • Snow Cloak makes this Pokemon great for Hail Teams
  • Great Attack and Special Attack
  • Somewhat small movepool
  • Weak to Meditite's Bullet Punch
  • All in all, good offensive attacker
[SET]
name: SubPunch
move 1: Encore / Yawn
move 2: Substitute / Protect
move 3: Focus Punch
move 4: Ice Punch
item: Oran Berry / Evolution Stone
ability: Snow Cloak
nature: Jolly
evs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe

Set Description
  • Can run the good old SubPunch combo
  • Yawn is great with 100 accuracy but must wait a turn before they fall asleep
  • Encore is useful locking Pokemon into set up moves
  • Ice Punch allows you to hit Gligar and prevents Ghost-type Pokemon from forcing you to switch
  • Focus Punch just goes with the set allowing you to hit Pokemon and not worry about losing focus because of Sub
  • Protect prevents you from taking a hit after Yawn
Additional Comments
  • When Hail is set up, this set becomes even more effective, some Pokemon may miss you and then your Sub lasts longer
  • Hits 14 Speed so not that fast
  • Protect is to be run with Yawn while Encore with Substitute
  • Evolution Stone adds extra bulk
  • Oran Berry to gain HP while subbing down
[SET]
name: Hail Sweeper
move 1: Blizzard
move 2: Surf
move 3: Hidden Power Grass
move 4: ICe beam / Echoed Voice
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Snow Cloak
nature: Timid
evs: 76 HP / 196 SpA / 196 Spe

Set Description
  • Has great coverage
  • With STAB Blizzard in Hail, you are assured to hit like a train
  • Cubchoo gets Surf which hits many Fire-type threats super-effectively
  • Hidden Power Grass hits Water-types which is useful as they may try to check Cubchoo
  • Echoed Voice is a new move to generation five, gaining power of the turns it's used much like Fury Cutter but with 100% accuracy. Great on a Choice set where you are limited to one move
  • Ice Beam is to conserve the PP of Blizzard
Additional Comments
  • EVs are to hit that magic number 21 needed for Choice Scarf Pokemon to outspeed everything in the tier while maximizing your Special Attack along the way
  • Snow Cloak is to give Cubchoo a better chance to dodge moves and last longer
  • Sadly Timid is needed to hit 21 Speed due to Cubchoo's terrible Speed stat
  • Essential teammate is Snover to set up Hail

Other Options
  • Can run a RestTalk set
  • Can run a Special set with its decent SpA and large movepool
  • Can run a somewhat support set
  • Cubchoo hits 14 Speed allowing it to run a Choice Scarf set
  • Hone Claws is Cubchoo's only option if it wants to raise its Attack and could prove useful in many sets
  • Avalanche is good. Cubchoo sports a low Speed so investing into HP and defenses could work
Checks and Counters

  • Meditite can go for the Bullet Punch or Drain Punch along with Pure Power a KO is assured
  • Croagunk can come in and Vacuum Wave
  • Frillish and Tentacool resists both Ice Punch and Focus Punch
  • Growlithe resists Ice Punch and hits super-effectively
  • Things that set up Stealth Rock can do a number to Cubchoo who takes 1/4 of its HP
  • Dokkora is a notable counter, with access to STAB, priority, Super effective attacks can do a lot to Cubchoo
Dream World

  • Rattled raises Speed when hit by a Dark, Ghost or Bug type move
  • Useful for offensive sets
  • Viable on support sets
  • Unless you run a Hail-team, this will be more effective in most cases

Mention Blizzard because Ice-types like Blizzard, and Cubchoo has quite decent SpA.

Counters:
Pururiru and Tentacool resist both Focus Punch and Ice Punch.

Growlithe resists its STAB and hits it SE, while Intimidate lowers the power of your attacks.

Dokkora doesn't take much from either and Drain Punches away, with priority STAB SE Mach Punch for finishing.

Stealth Rock limits its ability to Susbstitute, good users include Tessy and Bronzor, who can hit it with a STAB SE attack and, in Bronzor's case, resist its STAB.

Mention behind a sub, it has a lot more problems since it can't Focus Punch.

TO:
Spinners, Natu, Taunt for stopping SR, Natu lures Dark and Ghost attacks
Gligar lures Ice-attacks and takes Fighting-moves
Wynaut and Diglett trap priority users, Wynaut helps get Subs and remove other threats
Snover sets up hail for Blizzard and can lure out steels and smack them with HP Fire
Water-pokemon resist Steel and Fire

maybe more later after I nap

I was thinking about that as I was going to school :P

I don't think this is much of a counter, takes neutral damage from both attacks and usually set up Bulk Up making it easy Encore target

Stealth Rock limits its ability to Susbstitute, good users include Tessy and Bronzor, who can hit it with a STAB SE attack and, in Bronzor's case, resist its STAB.
Mentioned Stealth Rock, another thing I was thinking of adding

YAY NAPS

Mm.

Well, Dokk is neutral to both attacks, yes, but it has SE priority, and takes beh damage from Cubchoo's hits, unlike, say, Croagunk.

Against max hp, Evo-stone Dokk, Ice Punch does 25.9% - 37%, Focus Punch does 37% - 44.4%.

Ehh seeing those calcs it can manage with Drain Punch and Mach Punch so ill mention

I think you should mention a Choice Scarf set, as it hits 14 Speed, which outspeeds all non-Scarfed Pokemon.

Mention Hone Claws as it's the only way Cubchoo can boost it's Attack stat, which could be helpful.

Have Protect slashed onto Substitute, not Ice Punch. If one decides to use Protect, then Cubchoo is a mono-attacker with only Focus Punch. Ice Punch should not have anything slashed next to it.

Avalanche can be mentioned in OC, as Cubchoo isn't that fast, and is a stronger option is one decides to forgo Speed and put EVs into HP / Def / SpD instead.

Stamped when done.

EDIT: Okay, I'm leaving for Tibet tomorrow as seen from my sig, so won't be able to stamp this for a week, so might as well say it now.

QC Approved: 1/2

(only once changes are made!)

I agree with the above post. A Scarf set with Blizzard and Base 60 SpA shouldn't be passed up.

On the subpunch set, both Blizzard and Avalanche are superior options over ice punch. Also, Jolly is not necessary as it wont be outspeeding any sweeper anytime soon. Maybe just enough speed to outrun common walls.

I think that should be a set, other than a mention in Other Options. A Choice Scarf set consisting of Blizzard | Surf | Hidden Power Grass | Encore could be useful.

Why Echoed Voice? >_< It's an extremely atrocious move. I would just use Ice Beam over it in case they both KO something so you can 1) conserve PP and 2) beat Hippo
