[Overview]

Sandshrew can fit into many roles in a Little Cup team, acting similar to Gligar. It can play the role of an efficient Stealth Rock user thanks to its physical bulk, as well as an effective Rapid Spin user or a Swords Dance sweeper thanks to its above-average Attack stat and its ability, Sand Veil. Ifthere is a sandstorm, Sandshrew is definitely a Pokemon you need to watch out for. You may not see Sandshrew on a lot of Little Cup teams, but it is definitely one of the most underrated Pokemon in the tier.

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Rapid Spin
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Toxic / Night Slash / Rock Slide
item: Eviolite
ability: Sand Veil
nature: Careful/impish
evs: 196 HP / 76 Def / 196 SpD / 36 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Thanks to Sandshrew's huge Defense stat and boosted Special Defense thanks to Eviolite, it can be an amazing support Pokemon. Sandshrew has the ability to remove entry hazards with Rapid Spin and put up Stealth Rock at the same time. Sandshrew is a better Rapid Spin user than Baltoy because it is far more bulky, isn't OHKOed by Misdreavus, and can dish out damage too. It also isn't weak to U-turn, Sucker Punch, or Pursuit like Baltoy is. Earthquake and Rock Slide provide near-perfect coverage, so Sandshrew can deal out some damage and isn't a sitting duck once you get your Stealth Rock up. With Ferroseed present, entry hazards are popping up pretty often, and having a Rapid Spin user on your team can be very beneficial. The EV spread gives Sandshrew wonderful mixed bulk enabling it to set up Stealth Rock and remove entry hazards with Rapid Spin most of the time.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Hippopotas is the preferred teammate for Sandshrew so Sand Veil can be activated. Even without an investment in Attack, Sandshrew still has a respectable 14 Attack, so it can really tank a lot of hits and hit back hard as well. A Careful nature can be used if you want to further boost Sandshrew's Special Defense. An Impish nature can be used as well for extra physical bulk. However, Careful ispreferredbecause Sandshrew's Defense is already massive, and with Eviolite, it won't really make that much of a difference.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Night Slash / Substitute
item: Eviolite / Life Orb
ability: Sand Veil
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 40 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Sandshrew's wonderful Attack means that it hits a monstrous 34 Attack after a Swords Dance. Coupled with a decent 14 Speed, Sandshrew can be a very fearsome sweeper. With Earthquake and Rock Slide, Sandshrew gets perfect coverage barring Baltoy and Bronzor, and if you don't resist one of Sandshrew's attacks, you're in trouble. Night Slash is for Ghost-type Pokemon such as Misdreavus who have Levitate and are immune toEarthquake. A Jolly nature is preferred on this set because Sandshrew is relatively slow, and needs all the Speed it can get. The item chosen is purely a matter of preference. Eviolite will boost Sandshrew's already huge bulk, allowing it to set up a Swords Dance more easily. Life Orb boosts the power of Sandshrew's attacks, allowing it to KO things easier with and without a Swords Dance up.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Sandshrew should obviously be used with Hippopotas on your team to maximize its offensive capabilities. Drilbur is a good teammate for this set, as it can take out Sandshrew's counters and pave the way for a sweep, with Sandshrew doing the same in return so that either can sweep, though they share the exact same weaknesses. Carvanha is a good teammate with this set as well because it can reliably deal with Gligar, who otherwise walls Sandshrew. Bronzor is also a viable teammate because it resists Ice- and Grass-type moves and can set up dual screens. Exeggcute is another good teammate for Sandshrew as it resists Water- and Grass-type moves and can pass Wishes and use Sleep Powder to support Sandshrew's sweep. Chinchou resists Water- and Ice-type moves, and can beat other Chinchou who can take out Sandshrew, making it a great teammate for Sandshrew. Substitute can be used over Night Slash in the fourth slot if you want to block status and ease prediction. Oran Berry is a viable third item if you opt for Substitute over Night Slash. It can give you a few extra Substitutes if you want to trade for extra bulk.

[OPTIONAL CHANGES]

Sandshrew has physical options such as Brick Break, Shadow Claw, X-Scissor, and Gyro Ball, but none of them are as useful as the EdgeQuake combo is along with Night Slash. Sandshrew could possibly run a Substitute + 3 attacks moveset, similar to the Swords Dance set, with Night Slash, Earthquake, and Rock Slide. Sandshrew gets Counter, which is a viable move to use on the support set in some situations. Knock Off and Super Fang are also viable options on the support set, as they allow Sandshrew to support its teammates by removing the opposing wall's Eviolite and stripping off half their health with Super Fang.

[COUNTERS]

Gligar can wall Sandshrew and set up on it, or cripple it with Toxic. Ferroseed can beat unboosted Sandshrew if it switches in safely. Bullet Seed will also hit Sandshrew hard even through its Substitute. Misdreavus can switch into Earthquake freely, and cripple Sandshrew with Will-O-Wisp or smack it with Shadow Ball. It needs to watch out for Night Slash, though. Chinchou will destroy all of Sandshrew's sets with STAB Hydro Pump, but will get KOed if it switches into Earthquake. Bronzor can check Sandshrew lacking Night Slash as it resists the EdgeQuake combo. Snover is also a pain in the butt to Sandshrew as it takes the sand away and KOes Sandshrew with Blizzard.

[Dream World]

Sandshrew was presented with a gift from the heavens in the ability Sand Rush. Sand Rush, coupled with Sandshrew's great Attack stat, makes Sandshrew an even more potent sweeper. With a Jolly nature and max EV investment, Sandshrew reaches a massive 28 Speed, outspeeding all unboosted Pokemon. Match that with a huge 34 Attack stat after a Swords Dance, and you have a near unstoppable little critter on your hands. Sadly, Sand Rush Sandshrew hasn't been released yet.

Serebii.net says that Sandshrew's DW ability isnt released yet, and even in that sense he is outclassed by Drilbur (because who uses a support sand rush set?), and you spelled way to many things wrong and you need to capitolize moves, or GP is going to have your ass.

okay im finished writing

@Paradoxus: i know that it is outclassed by drilbur, but that doesn't mean he isn't viable. Also i realized that it wasn't released like halfway through writing this so i changed all that stuff out. Idk what i was thinking.

edit: capitilized all move, thanks

You could also opt for Toxic over Rock Slide on the support set. Toxic can cripple a lot of sweepers like scraggy and put a timer on its sweep.
Scraggy has Shed Skin.

hippopotas is the preffered teammate for sandshrew so sand veil can be activiated.
Mention Drilbur in AC for dual Sand Rush SD EQ teamwork? One gets rid of counters for the other to sweep.

Bronzor resists Grass and Ice, and has Stealth Rock and Dual Screens to support a sweep.

Exeggcute resists Water and Grass, and has Sleep Powder and Dual Screens and Wish.

Chinchou resists Ice and Water, and with HP Grass or Ground, it can beat other Chinchou, which normally have HP Fire.

Sandshrew gets Counter, which is...somewhat viable.

Knock Off and Super Fang are options on the support set.

That's 588 evs on the support set.

I'm going to say it now, capitalize pokemon names, natures, and items.

Slash in Shadow Claw next to Rock Slide on the support set, as you can hit those spin blockers like Misdreavus pretty hard on the switch

Mention Carvanha in AC for the SD set as it reliably deals with Gligar

switch the order of the sets because gligar fully outclasses unless you need a rock resist bad. even then it's a better rock resist because way more bulk.

slash toxic over rock slide because of missy/gligar/slowpoke... yknow, stuff that likes to switch in.

add to the overview that it's a bad gligar without wings and not a scorpion.

say why you would use it over baltoy to spin, as it is generally the better ground type rapid spinner (better bulk i guess?)

say why you would use it over baltoy to spin, as it is generally the better ground type rapid spinner (better bulk i guess?)
Speed, no U-turn weak, no Pursuit weak, no Sucker Punch weak, so yeah.

Round 2

Gliscor can wall Sandshrew and can either Swords Dance in your face or Toxic you so your sweep is ended short. Ferroseed can beat Sandshrew if it comes in and you're unboosted. Bullet Seed can hit you hard and can hit through your sub. Icy Wind Misdreavus can cripple you before you are able to KO it. With -1 speed you will be significantly easier to revenge. Chinchou can destroy all of Sandshrew's sets because it can KO sandshrew with Hydro Pump. Bronzor can check this set if you aren't running Night Slash because he resists the "EdgeQuake" combo.

gligar

Scarf Chinchy only reaches 25 speed, Sandshrew gets 28, so...yeah, not a counter in Sandstorm.

Scarf Snover is a dick to it though, takes away Sandstorm and Blizzards away.

Also who needs Icy Wind, it's slow anyway, for a sweeper. Missy can just Shadow Ball it. Or burn it with Will-O-Wisp. Assuming you don't have Night Slash.

Also add DW section.

With Earthquake and Rock Slide Sandshrew is granted perfect coverage
Baltoy and Bronzor

Also, Sandshrew can run Substitute/SD/EQ/Rock Slide with Oran/LO, to abuse Sand Veil while stalling for free turns to set up and kill stuff. I'd use that over Night Slash, myself.

evs: 196HP/112def/196spD
76 defense, I think? It ends with a 5...

If so, this allows you to gain a speed point by putting 36 evs in it.

@masterful:mentioned carvahna in AC and slashed in night slash.

@Nails:made changes

@Dark:made all the changes except taking chinchou out of the counters section because sand rush shrew isn't released yet, thanks.

Substitute on the SD set is for abusing sand veil misses. IE, substitute until they get a miss, and then SD while they break your sub. If you're lucky, you'll be at +2 with a Substitute, and then you can start killing things.

but i digress

in the DW section:
