Claydol (Analysis) [QC 0/3]

Why does this belong on-site?
With few viable Rapid Spinners on OU, many of them are forced onto teams in which they don't belong. Claydol is an effective spinner, although under-recognized. He can also lay SR, while possessing great resistances in this meta (Resists both of Terrakion's STABs and QuakeEdge!). He also has other options that can prove effective such as Dual Screens and Trick Room.

Claydol

[Overview]

The new generation has not been too kind to Claydol. Since receiving OU status in Gen III, it has fallen down to the depths of UU and is rarely seen in high tiers. Despite his use, Claydol has quite a few advantages as a defensive Pokemon. Claydol's possesses an array of resistances and immunities, including a resistance to the fabled QuakeEdge combination. In addition to this Claydol can also use a variety of support moves many other Pokemon lack, such as Rapid Spin, Trick Room, Light Screen and Reflect. Claydol also takes minimal damage from Stealth Rock and is immune to other hazards, increasing the number of times he can switch in.

All is not well for Claydol though, as its weaknesses do hamper his support capabilities. Weaknesses to common moves such as Ice Beam, U-turn, Shadow Ball and Pursuit don't help Claydol's case, and one must be wary of this when putting it on a team. Claydol also lacks any form of instant recovery, bar rest, and can be worn down quickly by repeated attacks. Although having several hindrances, Claydol can be used to great effect on a team if employed properly.

[SET]
name: Rapid Spin
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Ice Beam
move 4: Psychic / Earthquake
item: Leftovers
nature: Bold / Relaxed
evs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 12 SpA / 76 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

-Good spinner with access to Stealth Rock
-Cannot be trapped by Magnezone unlike Forretress
-Good mixed bulk, although repeated powerful attacks will bring it down
-Better than other spinners because he takes nearly nothing from hazards
-Psychic is for Fighting types like Terrakion and other things like Gengar
-EQ can be used if ground coverage is desired, use Relaxed though

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

-12 SpA EVs + Ice Beam net to OHKO on Landorus after SR
-76 S.Def avoids OHKO from Gengar's Shadow Ball before SR
-EVs can be tweaked as necessary
-Other offensive moves can be used: HP Fire, Bulldoze, Grass Knot, Explosion
-HP Fire for Scizor (BP is a 3HKO)
-Bulldoze for Ground coverage and speed lowering abilities
-Grass Knot for Gastro/Swampert/Quagsire
-Explosion is for that final bang!
-Rest for recovery and status heal
-Toxic is Toxic and is available

[Other Options]

-Dual Screens set w/ Light Clay
-Set up TR
-Specially bulky to absorb those hits better
-Set up Rain Dance w/Damp Rock for Swift Swimmers
-CM set, weak as hell and bad with no instant recovery
-Cosmic Power?

[Checks and Counters]

-Scizor (CB U-turn actually only KO's 12.5% of the time), bulky SD destroys
-Tyranitar's Pursuit
-Rotom-W can hit hard with Hydro Pump
-Gyarados sets up all day
-Gengar can come in on a Claydol with any residual damage and OKHO with LO Shadow Ball
-Latias takes nearly nothing from Ice Beam
-Powerful Ice-type attacks will take it down
-Starmie can take use Hydro Pump and spin SR Claydol has put down
-Empoleon is a great partner, only being neutral to Grass. Claydol also resists Empoleon's weaknesses
-Heatran is also a great partner, although they both share a common water weakness
-Toxicroak also makes a good teammate, absorbing water and resisting many of Claydol's weaknesses. Claydol can also take the Ground and psychic attacks that trouble him.

Not as good as BMB's old one =(
