Default Shelmet (Analysis) [GP 0/2]

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

[Overview]

Shelmet is an often overlooked Pokemon, mainly due to its typing that gives it a weakness to Stealth Rock, as well as itspoor offensive stats. However, Shelmet has amazing defensive stats in 50/85/65, as well as access to interesting moves such as Encore, Spikes, Recover, Yawn, and others. Its typing, while giving it nasty weakness, also grants him excellent resistances to Fighting-, Ground-, and Grass-type attacks, allowing it to setup on some threats.

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Recover
move 3: Yawn / Toxic
move 4: Bug Buzz / Protect
nature: Calm
item: Eviolite
evs: 116 HP / 236 Def / 156 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Due to its natural bulk and resistances, Shelmet can be an effective supporting Pokemon, being able to come in threats like Timburr (without Stone Edge), Mienfoo, and others, to get Spikes that will help your team. Spikes is the recommended on this set, racking up damage when the foe performs switches. Recover is an interesting move that allows Shelmet to heal itself from weak attacks in order to get more layers. The third moveslot is for status. Yawn can be used to give more free turns, but Toxic cripples defensive Pokémon and can be used with Recover to stall the foe to death. Protect is useful because it has excellent synergy with the third slot works well with two options.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EVs provide the last odd HP number for Shelmet, meaning that it can enter on a field with Stealth Rock five times instead of four, while the Defense EVs are there to reach the last even number (in order to get a stat jump with Eviolite), as well as the Special Defense EVs. Eviolite is the recommended item here because it makes Shelmet significantly bulkier, which he will need.

Pokemon which benefit from Spikes are good partners to Shelmet. Carvanha is an excellent partner for Shelmet; itresists Shelmet's Fire-typeweakness, while Shelmet resists its Fighting- and Grass-type weakness. Carvanha also loves the Spikes because, with them, it gets many OHKOs that it couldn't achieve without them. Tentacool is another interesting partner because it can spin away Stealth Rock that mauls Shelmet and also give Toxic Spikes support so that Shelmet can stall its foes better. Duskull and Misdreavus are great team options too because they can block attempts to spin Shelmet's Spikes.

[Other Options]

Hidden Power Fire is an interesting option in order to allow Shelmet to 2HKO Ferroseed, who would normally setup on Shelmet. It's also worth to note that Shelmet can learn Baton Pass, and can pass off Curse or Acid Armor.

[Checks and Counters]

Because Shelmet generally uses no attacking moves, Pokemon with Taunt can easily do what they want against him. This means that Taunt + Nasty Plot Misdreavus can use Shelmet as setup fodder. Toxic also proves to be very dangerous because it really hinders Shelmet's staying power. Entry hazards will also cause trouble because Shelmet is susceptible to every form of them and is weak to Stealth Rock. It also has exploitable weakness in Rock-, Fire- , and Flying-types, meaning that Pokémon like Taillow, Houndour and Darumaka can easily OHKO him with their STABs.

[Dream World]

Shelmet gets Overcoat as his Dream World ability. It's useful since Hippopotas and Snover are common and not taking damage from Hail or SandStorm is nice. However, this ability isn't released yet.

Timburr will just Stone Edge you to death. Also, Carvanha doesn't take Fire-type moves that well as you would expect. 20 defenses mean he still is not going to take Fire-type moves that much better than Shelmet.

Encore is a great move. Can't you just slash it with Spikes and rename it "Defensive" or something?

Aside from the Ferroseed error pointed out, I think Encore should stay where it is. Perhaps a mention in AC. I also think that an attacking move should be slashed in or at the very least mentioned in AC as well--Protect is a great move, but it's not all that and there are situations where its unnecessary for a team and Bug Buzz will be better.

You should also mention in OO that Shelmet can Baton Pass either Curse or Acid Armor. The latter is probably more important, and Shelmet actually may have use on a Baton Pass team with its fairly unique typing.

Make these changes or refute and I'll stamp

Just some small errors. Remember to use either it or he as the pronoun throughout the whole analysis. Don't use both.

Due to its natural bulk and resistances, Shelmet can be an effective supporting Pokemon, being able to come in threats like Timburr (without Stone Edge), Mienfoo, and others many other Fighting-type Pokemon that lack Stone Edge, to get set up Spikes that will help support your team. Spikes is the recommended move on this set, racking up damage when the foe performs switches. Recover is an interesting move that allows Shelmet to heal itself from weak attacks when its HP is low in order to get more layers of Spikes up and support its team longer. The third moveslot is for status. (remove period),(add comma) Yawn can be used to give more free turns, allowing you to set up more Spikes, cause switches, and rack up residual damage from Spikes, but Toxic cripples defensive Pokémon, (add comma) and can be used with Recover to stall the foe's HP to death. Protect is useful because it has excellent synergy with the third slot works well with two options is beneficial to both status moves, allowing Shelmet to evade damage increasing Toxic damage, or evade damage while Yawn was previously used forcing the foe to fall asleep.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EVs provide the last an ("the last" just sounds weird to me) odd HP number for Shelmet, meaning that it can enter on a field with Stealth Rock five times instead of four, while the Defense EVs are there to reach the last an even number (in order to get a stat jump with Eviolite), as well as the Special Defense EVs. Eviolite is the recommended item here because it makes Shelmet significantly bulkier, which he it will need.

Carvanha also loves the Spikes support because, with them, it gets many OHKOs many Pokemon that it couldn't achieve without them. Tentacool is another interesting useful partner because it can spin away Stealth Rock that mauls Shelmet and also give Toxic Spikes support so that Shelmet has an easier time stalling foes can stall its foes better. Duskull and Misdreavus are great team options too because they can block attempts to spin Shelmet's Spikes.

[Other Options]

Hidden Power Fire is an interesting (you use interesting a lot, and most of the time i don't know why) option in order to allow Shelmet to 2HKO Ferroseed, who would normally otherwise setup on Shelmet. It's also worth to note that Shelmet can learn Baton Pass, and can pass off Curse or Acid Armor.

[Checks and Counters]

Because Shelmet generally uses no attacking moves, Pokemon with Taunt can easily do what they want against him. This means Pokemon like that Taunt + Nasty Plot Misdreavus is a great example of this who can use Shelmet as setup fodder. Toxic also proves to be very dangerous because it really greatly hinders Shelmet's staying power. Entry hazards will also cause trouble because Shelmet is susceptible to every form of them and is weak to Stealth Rock. It also has exploitable weaknesses in Rock-, Fire- (remove space), and Flying-types, meaning that Pokémon like Taillow, Houndour,(add comma) and Darumaka can easily OHKO him with their STABs attacks.

Shelmet gets Overcoat as his its Dream World ability. It's useful since Hippopotas and Snover are common Pokemon,(add comma) and not taking damage from Hail hail or SandStorm sandstorm is nice useful. However, this ability isn't released yet.
As macle noted, there was still a few inconsitancies between it/him, so I went through and changed all of them to "it" since it looks like an it to me lol.

Also,

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Recover
move 3: Yawn / Toxic
move 4: Bug Buzz / Protect
nature: Calm
item: Eviolite
ability: Shell Armor (right?)
nature: Calm
evs: 116 HP / 236 Def / 156 SpD

But I can't stamp this yet since it's not in the GP queue. Blue_Star, go ahead and post the link to this analysis in the fifth gen GP queue when you can.
