Come here, Skarm...zap (Magnezone Discussion)

Magneton, the Pokemon that struck fear into the hearts of Skarmory everywhere. However, it died to all forms of bulky waters, and Dugtrio. What happened in DP? It evolved and got better.

Overview
http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/462.shtml
Base Stats:
HP: 70 Attack: 70 Defense: 115 Sp. Attack: 130 Sp. Defense: 90
Speed: 60
HP and Attack are mediocre, but Defense and SAtk are sky-high. But Magnezone ain't sweeping with that measly 60 Base Speed.

Traits
Magnet Pull & Sturdy
Magnet Pull: Steel type Pokemon cannot escape from battle
Sturdy: One-Hit KO moves will not work

Magnet Pull is the choice, no one uses Sturdy.

Special Movepool
STAB attacks are in bold.
Thunderbolt
Hidden Power
Luster Cannon
Charge Beam

That's it for useable attacks. Crap movepool, eh?

Physical Movepool
Explosion (!)
Return
Gyro Ball
Facade
Magnet Bomb

The only one you'll be using here is Explosion.

Support Movepool
Electrolevitate
Screech
Supersonic/Swagger
Thunder Wave
Toxic
Light Screen
Reflect
Rest
Recycle
Psych Up
Substitute
Metal Sound
Barrier
Mirror Coat

Check out THAT! Notables are Metal Sound, Thunder Wave, Light Screen, and Barrier to boost its above average defense.

Using these moves, this is a good moveset for Magnezone.

Magnezone @ Leftovers
Trait: Magnet Pull
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice/Fire/Grass]
- Explosion
- Thunder Wave/Light Screen/Swagger/Supersonic/Charge Beam

Rash - 196 HP / 96 Atk / 252 SAtk / 100 Spd

What does this movepool look like? Electrode's. Magnezone, with it's typing and high defense, actually survives hits. Magneton couldn't take a hit due to fragility. No defensive base stats below 70 is just cool, especially for a Special Sweeper. Pass an Agility or two to this, and you can potentially sweep. Charge Beam raises SAtk, don't argue. The Hidden Power is your choice, TB does more damage to Metagross than HP Fire.

Magnezone @ Salac Berry/Peteya Berry
Trait: Magnet Pull
- Thunderbolt
- Luster Cannon
- Recycle
- Rest

Modest - 252 SAtk / 252 Spd / 6 Def

A change from the standard electric. Luster Cannon + Thunderbolt gives double STAB. Rest and Recycle for the fact that Magnezone can use the berry, Rest, recycle off the used berry, and still pound away. This set takes time, but it is well worth it. However, Porygon2 does this better. Novelty.

Magnezone @ Salac Berry
Trait: Magnet Pull
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice/Grass]
- Endure
- Explosion

Timid - 252 SAtk / 252 Spd / 6 Def

Novelty, Endure an Earthquake from Dugtrio, and OHKO with Hidden Power. If something comes out that you can't OHKO, Explode.

Magnezone @ Leftovers
Trait: Magnet Pull
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Electrolevitate
- Explosion/Luster Cannon/Rest/Metal Sound/Thunder Wave

Modest - 96 HP / 100 Def / 252 SAtk / 196 Spd

Electrolevitate set. Use 31/30/30/31/31/31 DVs for no speed loss. If you use Thunder Wave, you can put the EVs in Speed into defenses. Go Quiet if you're using Explosion, Modest without.

Counters
Garchomp is faster, and OHKOs with a STAB Earthquake. The only way to possibly beat this is to use Reflect, Electrolevitate, or a ground-resist berry. Or the Endure novelty set.

Blissey just walls the crap outta you. Metal Sound would work, but it would most likely switch. Explosion doesn't OHKO when bliss is at 100% HP.

Snorlax only dies to Metal Sound and Explosion as well.

Dugtrio kills you too, use the same strategy for Garchomp.

I thought ELevi didn't "replace" your current trait with Levitate? I may be wrong.

I like the fact that with absolute Max Speed it'll always outrun Metagross, that's pretty cool for messing around with non-Choice Grosses. EL is probably gonna remain a gimmick but it's still cool.

It gets Mirror Coat to.

I don't really like it it is now slower than Metagross, Breloom and Skarmory (all of them are base 70, which ties with Magneton), the defensive boosts are nice though. Special Attack boost was unneeded.

Any Recycle set is novelty. Even Psych Up is better, but this thing is one generation late in general. In Advance it might have been fun to pull it out on Curse Snorlax or Calm Mind Suicune, Jirachi and Celebi. But seeing as Snorlax and Suicune are probably not going to keep up as easily with DP's hyperoffense on their Rests while Celebi can just Baton Pass out in general, it is a tad unnecessary and takes up a moveslot that could have been taken by a better move.

Like Explosion. Every Special Attacker with Explosion is cool in my book, because it shuts down Blissey and opens the opponent up for things like Raikou, Alakazam, Azelf, etc.

I suppose Reflect helps it to survive a Dugtrio Earthquake while Light Screen makes it more impervious to Boltbeam and Surfs. Screech is novelty but it can soften up Snorlax and Blissey for a Dugtrio kill. Speaking of Dugtrio, Magnezone doesn't mind Beautiful Skin at all.

It definitely owns Choice Band Metagrosses. Meta uses CB MM on something. Come in and stop it from switching and it is stuck using a 4x NVE MM on you against your base 115 Defense. It also owns mixgross sets too because HP Fire doesn't do that much to it in all reality. Gross doesn't have the SAtk for it. Magnezone does and can easily out-HP Fire Mixgross.

Hidden Power Fire from Magnezone does less to Metagross (and anything else Hidden Power Fire does 2x as much typed damage to) than Thunderbolt. This is one of the most stubborn myths/misconceptions ever.

So, for once and for all:

95 (Thunderbolt base power) * 1.5 (STAB) = 142.5
70 (Hidden Power base power) * 2 (SE) = 140

Unless some maths freak like X-Act can prove me wrong with the changed formula of course...but still, even if HP Fire does slightly more, Thunderbolt will always suffice for Metagross and will never shut down Jirachi any quicker than Hidden Power Fire would.

But it promptly dies to Agiligross as it's earthquaked to oblivion. On that note, I wish Magnmite still learned agility like in nypc gsc, then it could use the special attacking version of the same set.

Discharge might also find its way onto a few sets, the 30% paralysis is a good a Thunder's and paralyzing your counter is almost always a good idea. It also frees up a slot from Thunderwave if you like your odds.

EDIT: I read it as Metagross's HP Fire hitting Magnezone? Why Magnezone would be using HP Fire is beyond me, electric takes Skarm just fine and HP Ice/Grass are far better for coverage.

Magnezone would be using HP Fire because it traps stuff like Forretress/Scizor that are 4x weak to it. At least that's why Magneton carried it in Adv...

Also I was talking about using Metagross's HP Fire on Magnezone too. The Metagross set I used in ADV is MM/HP Fire/Psychic/Explosion.

I guess the extra stats are a welcome advantage now Maggie will have to invest way more of its stats into Speed to beat Metagross. It just sucks it now gets outsped by something considered slow, Tyranitar.

How well can this thing take CBTyranitars crunch and stone edge, I would like to get an idea of the numbers I know nettbattles damage calc isnt this greatest.

Magnezone (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Magnet Pull
EVs: 120 HP / 244 Spd / 144 SAtk
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
-Thunderbolt
-Hidden Power [Ice]
-Electrolevitate
-Filler

This is my idea for a sweeping Electrolevitate set. The speed is 216, enough to outspeed Rampardos, when the HP Ice speed reduction is taken into account, though I am thinking that it may be too much. The Special Attack is enough to OHKO 12/240/252 Garchomp with HP Ice. The last move can be basically anything from Magnezone's movepool. Luster Cannon for STAB, Explosion is a generally cool move, Rest is actually viable with EL to make it live longer, Thunder Wave paralyzes things, Metal Sound makes getting past Blissey and Snorlax easier, and the screens for team support.

31/30/30/31/31/31 = HP Ice with no speed loss, btw
(hp/atk/def/speed/spcl a/spcl d)

With that depressing speed though, I wouldn't bother giving it any speed EVs at all. I'd rather just stick Thunder Wave on it and pump defenses/special attack. Magnezone's not going to do much with speed, with all of the Infernape/Heatran running around anyway.

As far as i know Electrolevitate doesn't change your ability, it just makes you inmune to Ground attacks for 5 turns so it's a very nice option, ibecause without that 4x weakness and nice Defense you can handle physical Fighting attacks and still own Steel types that could come (except Heatran of course)

dpmfa462.png

Magnezone@ Leftovers
-T.Bolt
-Luster Cannon (bye bye Tyranitar, Rhyperior, etc.)
-Electrolevitate
-T.Wave/Metal Sound/Explosion

The last option is a Filler, you can catch many things on the switch with Metal Sound, T.Wave because of its lack of speed and Explosion to "counter" Blissey or any other special wall.

Why not use Charge Beam? Charge Beam's got the hightened chance of raising SpATK on Magnezone, making it all the much better for a sweeper with the pumping action. Besides, with it's higher power in the SpATK department, I doubt there'd be much of a difference between the gens of using Magneton's T-bolt and Magnezone's Charge Beam, wouldn't it? (I'd calculate it, but I can't find the calculations to do it.

You might want to EV Magnezone so it can beat Dugtrio, can it in anyway survive a CB Adamant Dugtrio EQ?
