I cant believe there hasnt been a thread about THE best water type ever (Well, in looks)

Stats:

90/75/75/90/100/70

Trait:

Damp: Prevents Explosion/Self Destruct
Water Absorb: Politoed is healed up to 25% when hit with a Water Attack

The latter is ALWAYS most useful.


Usable Physical Movepool (STAB in bold):

Waterfall
Focus Punch
Return/Frustration
Earthquake
Brick Break
Payback
Bounce
Ice Punch (Emerald Move Tutor-Poliwhirl)
Body Slam

Quite Wide, and very good moves in Waterfall, EQ, FP, IP and Body Slam.

Usable Special Movepool (STAB in bold):

Surf
Hydro Pump
Ice Beam
Blizzard
HP Anything
Focus Blast
Mud Bomb
Psychic

Not very varied, but Surf, Ice Beam, Focus Blast and Hidden Power are enough if you want a Choice Glasses version.

Usable Support Movepool:

Hypnosis
Perish Song
Swagger
Toxic
Rain Dance
Endure
Substitute
Endeavour
Haze
Refresh
Seismic Toss (From Emerald)

This is where this thing shines. Hypnosis, Perish Song, Endure, Endeavour. and Haze are all good moves.


Ok, so this thing has a stellar support movepool, and passable attacks on both sides of the spectrum. What possible movesets are there for it.

Your basic Choice Glasser. Surf for STAB, Ice Beam for Dragons/Grasses/Flyers, HP Grass for Swampert. Focus Blast is mainly filler, but can hit Blissey for a Semi-Decent amount

Adamant/Jolly Nature

Earthquake
Waterfall
Focus Punch
Body Slam/Ice Punch

Waterfall for STAB, Earthquake for the same reason everything has EQ, Body Slam if you are hoping to get the Paralysis so a slower poke can come in. Focus Punch is a good move I feel, as Physical Politoed is unexpected, and will therefore cause Blissey to switch in. On the switch, use Focus Punch. Bye Bye Blissey. Ice Punch if you fear dragons, or dont need Paralysis

Cons:

* doesn't have the resistances of Poliwrath to switch in to many things
* mediocre defenses, mediocre offenses, poor speed

If you are not using hypnosis, you're better off looking elsewhere. Rain dance clears sandstream.

Choice glasses is the other option because you have the easy switch into water and ice attacks.

Verdict:

Use as a novelty. Otherwise, steer clear of Politoed. It is worthlessly average at anything it can do.

it really hasnt gained anything, even from the old GSC days, has it? i cant see any reason to use this one at all, especially since another mediocre and diverse water pokemon, blastoise, already exists, and thats not particularly useful either

still, if you want to use it anyway, the more accurate hypnosis will come in handy as you try to beat your foe up with typical water moves, or force switches with dumb moves like swagger and perish song

I'd take Mud Shot over Mud Bomb any day. After taking a Mud Shot, a lot of Pokémon are slower than Politoed.

Hits Blissey with Focus Punch on the switch, however its actually better to hit Blissey with Endeavor on the switch and Focus Punch behind the substitute.

Chances are if you endeavor them at low life they will switch, or try to recover, that's when u focus Punch them, however with Stab+better Special Attack, Surf/Hydro Pump is probably better.

If only it got tide, it would work nicely with Stoss+Endeavor.

Although this pokemon is cool. He didn't really change much since second gen. He does deserve mention for his big support movepool and his 100 Sp. Def.

The more and more I look at this, Im starting to prefer the Choice Band version for reasons unknown.

I mean, sure it can only reach 273 Max Attack, but its unexpected, and can shut down waters. I mean, with Water Absorb and Hypnosis, not much is gonna risk staying out waterwise, other than Milotic, who would stay in, hoping for Hypnosis, STalk and then get FPunched.

Focus Punch won't do enough to Milotic to warrant that viable. Why is there no standard Bold set in the first post anyway?

I'd use Blastoise, Poliwrath or Quagsire over this thing anyday in UU.

One thing I have against a Choice Band version of Politoed I have to wonder why you don't simply use Poliwrath. Its not like they're that vastly different.

Wrath sacrifices 10 base spcl.def and 20 spcl.atk for a good defense and decent attack and even STAB on fighting moves. They have almost the same moves, spcl.def and exact same speed and HP.

Only major differences is that Politoed gets Perish Song and hurts more with spcl. atks.

Basically I'd just stick to the old special attacker Politoed with a Counter.

Poliwrath does that way better with higher Attack and STAB on Focus Punch.

Even so, I bet Milotic could read into what you're doing and switch out to something Ghost or Psychic.

Politoed was one of my favorite Pokemon in GSC and the first one I got to level 100 in my Crystal version, so I always try to use one.

Still... I tried it out in NB and it wasn't that good, but its still an awesome Pokemon! I think its better than Blastoise because it has Water Absorb and Hypnosis, which are more fun to use than whatever Blasty has.

It also has Psychic, which I think is interesting!~ ^.^
