Primeape #57 the pig monkey pokemon (previous discussion).

Abilities:

Vital spirit - cannot be put to sleep.
Anger nerve - when Primeape (or Primeape's substitute) is hit by a critical hit, its attack rises by 6 levels (400%).

HP: 65 (271/334)
Att: 105 (246/309/339)
Def: 60 (156/219/240)
SA: 60 (156/219/240)
SD: 70 (176/239/262)
Spd: 95 (226/289/317)

Relevant movepool: (physical/special/miscellaneous/novelty)

Low kick
Cross chop
Close combat
Focus punch
Reversal
Earthquake
Stone edge
Rock slide
Thunderpunch
Ice punch
Fire punch
U-turn
Aerial ace
Thunder
Overheat

Bulk up
Substitute
Endure
Protect
Taunt

Thief

Beat up
Punish

Movesets:

~ Vital spirit/adamant @choice scarf
~ Vital spirit/jolly @choice band/expert belt
U-turn
Close combat
Stone edge/thunderpunch
Earthquake/ice punch

Resistance to stealth rock makes this viable. The idea is to ease prediction because u-turn is usually used to scout what your opponent switches to. Choice scarf gives you an opportunity to stop fast sweepers.

~ Anger nerve/jolly @leftovers
Substitute
Close combat/focus punch
Stone edge/thunderpunch/focus punch
Earthquake/ice punch/focus punch

Substitute on a switch works two fold; helping with prediction and giving you an opportunity to activate anger nerve. With leftovers, you will have at least 5 such opportunities to abuse the trait (compounded 6.25% = 35.41% expected probability of CH over 5 turns).

~ Anger nerve/jolly @salac berry
Reversal
Substitute/endure
Stone edge/thunderpunch
Earthquake/ice punch

Only viable outside the standard environment where sandstream will not exist. It is probably still not a great idea with all the quick attack clones, choice scarf and even Abomasnow haxing your sweep. Still, anger nerve reversal is just scary.

Pros:

* rock and dark resist is better than nothing.
* vital spirit gives you free switches with accurate prediction.

Cons:

* if only it got mach punch... or even sucker punch/any quick attack clone to go with anger nerve.
* horrible defenses
* choice scarf version wishes Primeape had higher attack

Verdict: Haze- I mean Primeape is a fun pokemon with a number of options open to it. I can't see it being a staple in standard because it is simply too flimsy, but I certainly expect it to excel in the borderline/underused environments.

Primeape is a great UU pokemon and will most likely remain so. It is too fragile, and 105 attack and 95 speed are hardly seen as amazing in OU.

However it is the 2nd fastest (iirc) fighting pogey, gets Cross Chop and a bundle of other nice moves.

He's a trifle slower than I would have preferred but he is a neat pokemon.

There are many things that he can almost do but won't be able to execute and that deeply saddens me.

The Reversal thing would be neat except it didn't work very well in RSUU to begin with because everyone carried something with Quick Attack and Abomasnow ggs any attempts at using Reversal, which coupled with the fact he's a pretty solid UU to begin with will probably ensure he's fairly popular in UU which isn't any fun for Primeape.

Anger Nerve is cool except he has like four HP and seven defense so the odds of him actually surviving a critical hit are extremely low, and even if you try to trigger it with Substitute, if it doesn't activate on one of the first two subs you're pretty much in the same situation the Reversal set is where you'll die a horrible death to quick attackers, and the odds of that are far too low to justify using it. Not to mention that even if you get it off you're not assured to outrun all the other UUs without a Salac Boost.

He might be kind of fun with some combination of Stone Edge/EQ/Close Combat/Focus Punch/Elemental punches @ Choice Band depending on what ends up being popular in UU but I really have no grasp over what'll be popular in that metagame in order to predict a set.

At least he bears a resemblance to Hazerider.

Anger Nerve is pretty nice, but you kinda need to get lucky.
Does it block the damage? If so, he'd be better, as without a sub, a crit hit could be a problem.

Hes cool, but he lacks a bunch of moves (Pursuit, he seems perfect for it...) but has some good ones.

Anyone Wishing Pursuit is crazy because even Gengar with no Special Attack EVs 2HKOs Primape with Shadow Ball. What the hell are you going to Pursuit out?

I think I mentioned Primeape being a Darkrai counter. Vital Spirit means it can't be put to sleep (so it can come in on a Dark Hall) and Cross Chop is an OHKO. Unless Darkrai carries Psychic it won't KO Primeape first. At least it's an Espy-style counter to Darkrai. Prediction is the key to countering, with it many things become counters to others (like this). I have no idea what it would be doing in ubers except countering Darkrai but w/e because it does do that (unless it comes in on a special attack).

It can U-Turn Celebi now, that is so awesome. Loss of HP Ghost is somewhat annoying but Gengar should be Stone Edged anyway. Anyway, this thing has a pretty swift Cross Chop to dish out, but I'll stick with the old Vital Spirit. Anger Nerve is just useless, though this reminds me of Roy's monologue last night, proposing a L1 [something] (preferably Absol) with Slash and Quick Claw to go with it to Slash Primeape and pray for a CH. Well, it might have been about Tauros but whatever.

Just to pine in. I had some fun with a novelty Primeape set back in Advance.

Primeape@ Kings Rock
-Low Kick
-Swagger
-Substitute
-Rock Slide

Bad thing was Primeape had no other status moves besides Swagger. But quite simply all there was to this set was that Low Kick is the only flinch move that did gain a flinch boost from Kings Rock.

So basically you have a 95 base speed 60 flinch STAB Low Kicker which was quite fun.

I'm thinking that set could now be modified to.

Primeape@ Kings Rock
-Low Kick
-Stone Edge
-Focus Energy/Substitute
-Cross Chop/Karate Chop

Its what it seems, pure luck hax. Of course nothing more than a novelty set. Given how much more offensive D/P is Swagger is a death wish.

You do know that Darkrai 2HKOs Primape with Dark Pulse, right?
You mean Beam/Thunder/Focus Punch, no? Because Primeape resists Dark Pulse and prolly won't 2HKO unless it's Choice Spec'ed

That picture looks too much like Sheimi

Just to follow on, Jibaku is right.

A 405 spcl.atk Darkrai with Dark Pulse only does 43% tops on a no HP, no spcl.def Primeape. There is no way Darkrai can 2HKO without choice glasses and +spcl.atk nature.

However to call it a Darkrai counter is going too far. Theres no way in hell Primeape can outspeed Darkrai. Even at its slowest Darkrai is only 3 less speed than a completely maxed out Primeape.

This thing would be ridiculous in a 2v2 battle, you put it and a poke w/ a high crit hit atk out and atk it XD.

Hey, it could work. Then it's attack is like, monstrous and it will sweep. Add some speed and a Salac Berry, boom. gg.
