Waiting for a Shellder to bite... (Slowbro Discussion)

Here's a thread about everyone's dim-witted friend, Slowbro!

Base stats:

HP-95
Attack-75
Defense-110
Special attack-100
Special defense-80
Speed-30

Notable physical movepool:

waterfall
avalanche
zen headbutt
earthquake
return
focus punch

Notable special movepool:

surf
ice beam
flamethrower
psychic
shadow ball
grass knot
hidden power
focus blast
brine

Notable support movepool:

curse
calm mind
yawn
slack off
amnesia
toxic
light screen
rest
substitute
thunder wave
psych up

Now for the sets:

Slowbro @leftovers
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Def / 46 Sp. Def
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
-calm mind
-slack off
-surf
-ice beam/grass knot

-Calm mind 'Bro. The final move is a choice for whether you hate other waters or dragons more.

Slowbro @leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Atk / 82 Def
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
-subsitute
-focus punch
-ice beam
-surf

-I think he makes a pretty good subpuncher. Yawn could take the place of substitute in this set so he could punch stuff on the switch.

Slowbro @leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Sp. Def
Careful nature (+Sp. Def, -Sp. Atk)
-curse
-slack off
-waterfall/zen headbutt/earthquake
-avalanche

-The calm mind set is better than this one, but he can still curse. Avalanche is welcome addition to his physical movepool because he always goes last. The third move slot is for personal preference.

Overall opinion: I think that Slowbro has gotten much better since r/s/e because slack off has been added to his movepool. This gives him more bulkiness and in certain situations he can match up to Milotic. I think that he should be OU because there are SO many sets for him and there are few surefire counters for all of them. I could have written about 10 Slowbro sets, but I chose the ones that are my favorites.

This will probably be the new Standard..

Slowbro @ leftovers
Bold

Surf
Ice Beam
HP Electric
Slack Off

Bulky water that serves as a very nice Gyarados counter (with HP Electric).

Slowbro improved A LOT this gen with Slack Off at it's disposal.

Yes. Currently I am using the same set that you posted except I use thunder wave instead of HP electric for more bulky power.

HP Electric is pretty damn important for Slowbro, otherwise it gets basically walled by Gyarados while it DDs in it's face.

The worthless second type completely fucks him up the ass and makes Milotic, Vaporeon or even Suicune much more appealing. The only way I would use him is if i had some glaring fighting weakness, and he still gets nailed by Infernape's U-Turn. I can't see something weak to Crunch cutting it as a tank this gen.

Bulky Pure Water types have problems switchin' in because of lackin' resistances, for example Suicune, you can't switch Suicune safely into Tar's Crunch, neither into Heracross' Cloce Combat, etc...

But Slowbro actually has a secondary Type that helps it with a Psychic and Fightin' resistance, I know it adds Dark, Bug and Ghost weaknesses but the users of those moves can be predicted

Ice Beam
Hidden Power Electric
Flamethrower
Slack-off

Does this work? Bolt/Beam+ Flamethrower for Magnezone/Bronzong/Skarmary/Steelix/Metagross.

(Helps vs Metagross because Bro has good Defenses, Resists Meteor Mash, and can Flamethrower).

yeah but the Metagross will either Thunderpunch you or switch.

Last time I checked, sans meant without...

What I dislike about Slowbro is that it is slower than everything it is meant to counter. Further, it has no immunity to any form of residual damage; so Slowbro necessarily needs to be at near maximum health to switch comfortably into i.e. Rhyperior earthquake. Otherwise, it hits second and dies. For this reason, I am unlikely to ever use Slowbro in a competitive team.

I suppose Trick Room is meant to remedy this situation. You'll still take a hit while setting it up, but you should be faster than everything after that.
