Britney Spears is back believe it or not. Her 5th album “Blackout” hits stores all over the world on October 30th. “Blackout” is a very high-energy album that suggests the sleek and sexy dance-pop hits of her previous time. Though there is a lot of negativity revolving this album, I believe it has some potential.
1. "Gimme More"
I think most of us have heard Gimmie More, the first hit of her album. Surprisingly after her terrible VMA performance, this song has been #1 on iTunes and the Charts for quite some time. This song is pretty unique, a hard core beat and with sexy lyrics, obviously a club song. Being the first track, leaves suspense of the rest of the album…
2. "Piece of Me"
As the second single, this song was very well done with a catchy beat and chorus. Club music I would say starting off with an electric trippy sounds, still pretty innocent lyrics wise. This song shows how powerful she can be, saying “You wanna piece of me?” after describing herself as the media would. Though, this song does scream redundancy with the overused “I’m famous so people wont leave me alone” idea, this song still sounds amazing as the vocals are mixed amongst the swirling ambience.
3. "Radar"
Another high-beat song, and I don’t think it has to do anything with her real life. This song is heavily edited, but still has the Britney sound, though showing the limitations of her voice. Once the chorus pops up it’s overplayed and repetitive, it brings about a very catchy tune that will stick with you. Not one of the better songs on the album, that’s for sure.
4. "Break the Ice"
Very nice introduction and melody. This song would have been better as a first hit than Gimmie more in my opinion. You can really hear Britney’s voice, and the chorus is very catchy… I almost got up and danced! The song bounces between her girly like voice into an alto chorus with a drum like beat. I think I enjoyed this song the most so far… great with headphones.
5. "Heaven on Earth"
Techno-ish beat, definitely raw and nice to listen to. Subtle lyrics and beat, kind of reminded me of “Stars are Blind” by Paris Hilton (but not as bad) or something Gwen Stephani would make. On her last album, this song sounds similar to “Breath” though with less sexual lyrics. This track is actually one of the more solid offering on the album, as Britney’s vocals pretty consistent with a richer approach than her normal shrill character. The chorus itself is incredibly enchanting, lilting along with melodic ascendancy.
6. "Get Naked (I Got a Plan)"
One of the first very sexual songs on Britney’s Blackout, obviously from just looking at the title. Starting off with a male voice and an excellent club-like beat, this song heats off with lyrics about “heating bodies”, while you feel like you’re in a club dancing away. The chorus being, “Get Naked x4”, “Take if off x4”, “Get Naked x4” with the devilish beat in the background just screams enjoyment. Britney exclaims "when I get on top you're gonna lose your mind" you almost want to believe her. I can see this as one of her second or third hits to be released with in the upcoming months, and will probably be a hit at many dance and strip clubs.
7. "Freakshow"
With an interesting first line of lyrics, this song starts off quick with a catchy and fast paced chorus and beat. Another club-hitter in my opinion. This song sounds something that Britney wouldn’t have done on her previous albums, which is good in a sense that she is creating a new sound for herself. This song is probably tied with “Get Naked” with having a club-like beat and atmosphere.
8. "Toy Soldier"
I love this song, Britney’s voice is very hot and so is the beat. Sounds like a mix between Avril Lavigne, Nelly Furtado. “I need a soldier, I’m sick of toy soldiers” I this song is about needing a man that can “take care of me [her]”, a play off of Kevin Federline. The sound of her voice is similar to that of “Do Something” as on her previous album with some kind of mock rap sound.
9. "Hot as Ice"
Putting Britney’s vocals to the test, with a high pitched sound of her voice and a staggering beat, this song comes out strong and different than the other songs. Hot as Ice is definitely a classic Britney sound, which is nice to hear after 8 songs of something different.
10. "Ooh Ooh Baby"
Guitar in the background, hand clap beat, Britney starts to laugh; I can tell this song will be a hot one. One of the most sexual songs on the track, guessing from the title of the song… “Ooh Ooh Baby, touch me and I come alive, I can feel you on my lips… I can feel you deep inside….Fillin’ me up with your love.” Nice straightforward track.
11. "Perfect Lover"
Sounds something like Timbaland in the background at first, the song comes out very fast yet she sings with a soft voice. There’s sex all over the lyrics and in the beat, “I like it when you touch me there, you make me feel so hot”. This is probably one of my favorite songs on the album, all about sex and has an excellent beat. “I’m so damn high….” As she’s moaning and breathing in the background she portrays an image of herself wanting to show you her naked body.
12. "Why Should I Be Sad"
The last track, and probably the “slow” song of the album, yet still has a pretty steady beat. I wasn’t really liking this one at first being probably the weakest track on the album, but it begins to stick with you. When the guys sing, “Britney let’s go!” I began to really enjoy listening. Britney starts talking about the magazines that talk about her, and her chorus “It’s time to move along”, basically saying “Goodbye” to everything. Nice song to end the album to.
Over all, this album is pretty good in my opinion, bringing some new material to the table as well as some older Britney-sounds. It’s basically a dance album as every song has a nice beat, sexually and inviting lyrics about either her personal life or sex in general. Each track on the album is unique to the other tracks, independent and different. But just one thing, if you didn’t like Britney Spear’s music in the past you probably won’t like it this time.
Score: 3.5/5
