Cottonee (Analysis) (Placeholder)

Taking this over and I'm kind of reworking eric's skeleton since it's a little outdated imo...

[Overview]

Cottonee is one of the more interesting Pokemon that was introduced to LC this generation due to its impressive and unique supporting capabilities. Prankster makes it by far the best SubSeeder in Little Cup, and it is also able to further annoy the opponent with priority Encore, Stun Spore, and Taunt. These make Cottonee a difficult Pokemon to play around safely, and one that is almost impossible to set up on.

[SET]
name: SubSeed
move 1: Leech Seed
move 2: Substitute
move 3: Encore / Stun Spore / Taunt
move 4: Hidden Power Fire / Taunt
item: Eviolite / Leftovers
ability: Prankster
nature: Bold
evs: 36 HP / 196 Def / 196 SpD / 72 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-Priority Leech Seed+Substitute allows Monmen to set up a SubSeed cycle on almost anything incapable of OHKOing it
-Encore lets it switch in on any Pokemon using a set up move (Dragon Dance Scraggy, Nasty Plot Misdreavus, Bulk Up Timburr, Swords Dance Gligar, etc) and lock them into that
-Stun Spore can cripple sweepers like Carvanha and stop them from running over a team (if a counter died or something). Accuracy is meh but at least it hits all Pokemon
-HP Fire 2HKOes standard Eviolite Ferroseed and helps Cottonee against other Cottonee (I think its like a 3/4HKO though lol)
-Taunt stops defensive Pokemon like Ferroseed and Dwebble from setting up hazards.... considering putting it in AC because imo its not as good as the other moves

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
-The last two slots can really be mix-and-matched to suit whatever the team Cottonee is on needs
-Eviolite improves Cottonee's bulk, allowing it to set up a SubSeed cycle easier and to allow it to come in on Scraggy Ice Punch predicting a DD etc without being too crippled.
-Leftovers can be used to help Cottonee stall better once it has gotten a Sub up
--If using Leftovers, min HP should probably be run
-maybe mention Toxic? idk seems kind of OO to me

teammates:
-Cottonee forces switches easy, so entry hazards are nice. Stuff like dwebble, gligar, bronzor, etc can lay hazards nicely.
-Bulky Water-types help against a lot of the pokemon that threaten Cottonee. Chinchou, Slowpoke, and Tentacool all make good teammates.

[SET]
name: Defensive/Supporter (idk)
move1: Stun Spore
move2: Encore / Taunt
move3: Leech Seed / Giga Drain
move4: Hidden Power Fire / Cotton Guard
item: Eviolite
ability:Prankster
nature: Calm
evs: 36 HP / 196 Def / 196 SpD / 72 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]-This set is more of a team player
-Stun Spore cripples sweepers
-Encore/Taunt makes sure stuff can't set up on Cottonee
-Leech Seed/Giga Drain for recovery
-HP Fire for Ferroseed and other Cottonee
-Cotton Guard helps make Cottonee more defensive and stally

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
-Toxic can help to stall out other Pokemon.... 4MSS makes it a bad idea though
-can run a different nature/EV spread I suppose

teammates:
-see above

[Other Options]
-Switcheroo can be used to give the opponent a nasty item like Toxic Orb/Flame Orb/Iron Ball/Choice Scarf, but it's kind of a gimmick
-Grasswhistle can be used for Sleep, but it's poor accuracy makes even Stun Spore look good
-Endeavor gives it a way to be an offensive threat, it could be used well with Substitute and Stun Spore
-Sunny Day can be used but its inferior to Vulpix

[Checks and Counters]
-Mienfoo can come in on almost anything and use U-turn to break its Substitute or damage it, while it can shrug off damage with Regenerator. Needs to be wary of Stun Spore (but that's rare)
-Shellder can use Icicle Spear to break Substitutes and hurt Cottonee
-Scraggy doesn't mind status and can hit it with Ice Punch. Dratini is also not worried about it and can Dragon Dance and then use ExtremeSpeed
-Taunt usually shuts down Cottonee. Misdreavus and Gligar can both use it to give Cottonee a hard time.
-Natu shuts it down pretty nicely
-Pokemon immune to Leech Seed can beat Cottonee if it isn't running HP Fire, however most do. Snover, Ferroseed, etc.

Hey, I've NEVER, NOT ONCE, played LC before, but I know from using Erufuun that Cotton Guard allows it to tank physical attacks like nobody's business. I'm not sure how a +3 defense boost would affect a pokemon in LC, but with all the fighting types running around it should work very well.

I probably wouldn't run Encore and Taunt on the same set but maybe that's just me. I'd take the slash for Encore off the fourth line but it's up to you.

Natu is a 100% counter

Grass/Poison types wall it if it runs Toxic>Stun Spore and no HP Fire

Sap Sipper Shikijika (shut up it works) walls it without Toxic and no HP Fire

Dratini shed skins off status and can espeed it before it moves

Meditite Fake Out+Bullet Punch wrecks it if it doesn't have a sub

Fighting-types can Drain Punch subs away while using the damage to recover Leech Seed drain. Scraggy has Shed Skin, and Timburr and Machop have Guts, to boot.

Without HP Fire or Stun Spore, it's Snover bait.

for teammates, hazarders like dwebble are cool, water-types resist fire and ice (chinchou resists flying too and kills water/flyings with thunderbolt), steel-types resist ice/bug/poison/flying (bronzor sets up sr too), and fire-types resist bug/ice/fire and kill grasses that resist leech seed (vulpix is cool for taking away hail/sandstorm)

also i would never use giga drain over leech seed, but maybe that's just me.

ok updated a little. I still need help with good teammates..... cottonee works well with just about anything so it's kind of annoying..

I just had a few suggestions:
Probably not a whole set, but maybe a mention in AC for:
I tested this set:

Cottonee @ Focus Sash

Lv. 1

Nature: Jolly - EVs: 248 Atk / 252 Spd

 • Leech Seed
 • Substitute
 • Protect
 • GrassWhistle
The idea is simple, Leech Seed turn 1, focus sash will save you. Then just spam Protect and Sub. You'll force a switch and if you can predict when (usually first two-three turns) then you can GrassWhistle the incoming Pokémon. So all in all its pretty useful.
Walled by: Ferroseed, Priority users and Machamp [Confusion] and obviously status.

GrassWhistle's accuracy is also pretty low, so Cottonee would be better off running Toxic or Stun Spore. Protect isn't exactly spammable, since it has a higher chance to fail when used in succession. In general, I don't think this set would work considering Cottonee's sash would most likely get broken by weather or entry hazards. Better off running an Eviolite.

Also, this is just a suggestion, but mabye mention Cottonee's advantages over DW Purrloin? I mean, yeah, Cottonee has SubSeed, but Purrloin also has priority Taunt with the same base Speed and has better offensive potential.

dw purrloin doesn't exist yet

I know, but it's just a suggestion. When it does come out I think there should be some mention of Cottonee's advantages over it.

Edit: V My bad, didn't think "spam" referred to Protect and Substitute collectively. But I stand by my opinion that Grasswhistle's low accuracy makes it a waste of a moveslot.

Protect, then sub. Protect, then sub. That works. and yes, weather can make it void.
