[Overview]

While Shroomish didn't really change much in the transition from the previous generation, it has become much less effective. The huge increase in Taunt along with the advent of new abilities such as Prankster and Magic Bounce, makes Shroomish's life extremely difficult. Playing identically to last generation isn't helpful either, as the introduction of Eviolite tends to make Shroomish a lesser choice when it comes to picking a bulky pivot for your team. However, Shroomish does have a few unique traits that give it a definite niche. It is still among the very select group of Pokemon who can use Spore, as the only new Pokemon to get the move, Foongus, is arguably inferior to Shroomish due to the lack of Poison Heal. While Shroomish's playing style hasn't changed at all, it still makes a viable choice for Little Cup stall teams.

[SET COMMENTS]

Shroomish is still quite the bomb when it comes to annoying your opponent: put them to sleep with Spore, use Substitute on the switch, hit the switch-in with Leech Seed, and you've got yourself a stalling cycle! Since Pokemon utilizing the abilities Vital Spirit and Insomnia are uncommon, Shroomish can really wreck havoc on teams that aren't prepared for it. The sheer effectiveness of a 100% accurate sleep-inducing move, Poison Heal, and Leech Seed all combined makes Shroomish quite a staller. It also fares very well against common physical attackers such as Pawniard and Mienfoo.

Shroomish can be extremely effective in certain cases. For example, a Pokemon who wants to use Trick while Shroomish switches in can eat the effect of a Toxic Orb while Shroomish usually gets a useful item such as an Eviolite or Oran Berry. Even a Choice Scarf can turn our menacing mushroom friend into a fast sleep-inducer, very much like how Choice Scarf Breloom plays in the upper tiers.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

If you really trust Leech Seed by itself and want Shroomish to take hits better instead of constantly healing, Eviolite is an option over Toxic Orb. Also, if you have a way to already get Shroomish poisoned, Eviolite or Leftovers will be of more value. Focus Punch or Seed Bomb are options for an offensive move, but Shroomish has trouble finding a moveslot for including the same. Entry hazards such as Spikes, and weather conditions such as hail and also help Shroomish immensely, whittling down the foe's health further.

Great examples of teammates include Dwebble and Ferroseed, who can both set up Spikes and Stealth Rock. Natu with Magic Bounce can take care of any Pokemon who tries to use Taunt on Shroomish, taking out any meddlesome Grass-types with Drill Peck or Hidden Power Fire. Shelmet can set up Spikes, but shares weaknesses to both Flying- and Fire-type attacks. Lastly, if Natu is messing up Shroomish's stall, Elekid and Gastly can remove Natu from the equation.

[Other Options]

You can give Shroomish a Choice Scarf if you want it to be able to put things to sleep quickly so you can set up. Shroomish doesn't really have anything else in its arsenal other than Wake-Up Slap, Giga Drain, and Focus Punch, none of which are ideal when Protect is available.

[Checks and Counters]

Taunt users can make Shroomish really sad, as well as Natu who does the same with Magic Bounce. Cottonee has a priority Taunt, and its Grass typing provides an immunity to Leech Seed. Lastly, any Pokemon with the move Substitute or the abilities Sap Sipper, Vital Spirit, or Insomnia laugh at Shroomish, as Spore will either help them or do nothing.

[Dream World]

Quick Feet is pointless, as Poison Heal takes advantage of Toxic Orb 200% better.
