Blastoise [GP 2/2]

Blastoise
QC Approved [3/3]
GP Approved [2/2]

[Overview]

Blastoise is one of the few bulky Water-types that has access to Rapid Spin. Blastoise's base 100 Defense and base 105 Special Defense allow him to take hits very well all around, and checks Ground-type Pokemon such as Donphan and Rhyperior. Blastoise also has an excellent support movepool consisting of moves such as Foresight, Yawn, Toxic, Dragon Tail, and Haze. With all of these assets combined, Blastoise can easily aid teammates.

[Set]
name: Utility
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Scald
move 3: Foresight
move 4: Ice Beam / Toxic / Dragon Tail
item: Leftovers
ability: Torrent
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Rapid Spin allows Blastoise to spin away entry hazards such as Stealth Rock and Spikes, which can greatly damage the tortoise's teammates. Rapid Spin, in conjunction with Foresight, allows Blastoise to spin away entry hazards against Ghost-types, who would otherwise prevent you from doing so. This makes it incredibly hard to stop Blastoise from spinning. Scald is the STAB move of choice, giving Blastoise a chance to burn the opponent, making it much easier for him to take physical hits. The last slot depends on whether you want Blastoise to hit Grass-types for super effective damage, or if you want him to support your team. Toxic can be used to deal damage to bulky Water-types such as Milotic, or other Pokemon who would otherwise take little damage from this. Dragon Tail can be used to shuffle through your opponent's team while still dealing damage. It is recommended over Roar because it allows Blastoise to hit Magic Bounce Pokemon such as Espeon, and can not be stopped by Taunt.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EVs and nature give Blastoise as much physical bulk as possible. Although a Bold nature is preferred, a Calm nature can be used as well in conjunction with Scald. Blastoise already has an excellent Special Defense stat, and this means Blastoise prefers to be hit from the special side. If you opt for a Calm nature, an alternate spread of 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD is recommended. Roar allows Blastoise to shuffle the opponent's team, shift out threatening sweepers, and cause damage from entry hazards. Unlike Dragon Tail, Roar doesn't have to worry about Pokemon with Substitute, as Dragon Tail will not often break a foe's Substitute. Haze removes all stat modifications of the opponent's Pokemon. This allows Blastoise to stop set-up sweepers and Baton Pass teams with Espeon. Roar is generally the better option over Haze unless the opponent has Magic Bounce Pokemon such as Espeon or Xatu. Haze is incredibly useful at stopping Baton Bass chains, which these two Pokemon are commonly placed on. Grass-type Pokemon work very well with Blastoise, resisting both of his weaknesses. Roserade is a perfect example of this, sporting a 4x resistance to Grass-type attacks, a 2x resistance to Electric-type attacks, and access to Spikes and Toxic Spikes. This allows Blastoise to use Roar or Dragon Tail and shuffle through the opponent's team, causing damage and poisoning the opponent. Chansey has an enormous Special Defense stat which allows herto take special attacks aimed at Blastoise. Chansey can also provide Blastoise support from Wish, Stealth Rock, and Heal Bell.

[Other Options]

Other than the options listed, Blastoise has a few alternatives. A set consisting of Rapid Spin / Scald / Rest / Sleep Talk could be used, as Rest is Blastoise's only way of recovery. This allows Blastoise to come in more and support his team longer with Rapid Spin support at the cost of not being able to hit Ghost-types with Rapid Spin due to not having Foresight. Due to the new sleep mechanics in the 5th generation, this could leave Blastoise as set-up fodder for many sweepers, especially since Blastoise no longer has access to Roar or Haze. Blastoise could run a viable Choice Specs or Choice Scarf set. If a Choice Specs set is chosen, Blastoise should use a Timid nature with an EV spread of 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe. If a Choice Scarf set is chosen, use a Modest nature instead, while maintaining the same EV spread. A movepool consisting of Water Spout / Hydro Pump / Ice Beam / Hidden Power Electric is recommended on a Choice set. Blastoise does a lot of damage with Water Spout, especially with Choice Specs equipped, and can act as a revenge killer with a Choice Scarf equipped. This set is extremely surprising as well, and can net a KO just from the surprise factor.

[Checks and Counters]

Although it is hard to stop Blastoise from doing his job of Rapid Spinning, any set without Ice Beam allows Grass-types to come in with impunity and threaten him with super effective attacks, especially those with the ability Natural Cure to rid them of a possible burn from Scald or Toxic. This includes Grass-types such as Roserade (who is even immune to Toxic), Celebi, and Shaymin, all of which have a great Special Defense stat and can take little damage from Blastoise's attacks outside of Ice Beam.

[Dream World]

Blastoise gets the ability Rain Dish from the Dream World. This ability is useless outside of Rain Dance, so Torrent should be the ability used on all sets. However, Rain Dish on a Rain Dance support set could prove quite useful, recovering 1/16th of Blastoise's HP each turn, allowing him to stay alive longer and, of course, support his team with Rain Dance support longer. With Rain Dish, Blastoise is an excellent check to Rain Dance teams as well; backed up by his natural bulk, Rain Dish, and resistance to their STAB Water-type attacks, it will be hard for them to take Blastoise down.

does restalk really merit a set?

if blastoise isn't spinning, it's inferior to milotic, IMO.

It can still Rapid spin with a Rest Talk set. Wouldn't a set of Boil Over / Rapid Spin / Rest / Sleep Talk be fine? Yeah, it doesn't have Foresight, but at least now it has some form of recovery (Donphan doesn't even use Foresight). I'm fine with this not being a set, I'm just giving a suggestion.

You're better off just slashing Rest on the utility set. Sleep Talk is kind of pointless if it's gonna be selecting either Rapid Spin or Rest 2/3 of the time.

Rapid Spin is the only thing Blastoise can do other than set up Rain Dance. I remember in Gen 4 UU we added Rain Dance sets if they were good enough and I think Blastoise might fit with awesome defenses, Rapid Spin and Rain Dish. It has a huge OO section at least, it's just outclassed by pretty much every other water except at Rapid Spinning.

Scarf with Water Spout is pretty awesome IMO and Specs can leave a huge dent if it can get in a hit untouched

I don't think Scarf/Specs warrants their own set. Blastoise's Special Attack is too low imo (base 85) for a scarf set. I'm not too sure about a Specs set either, but i'll let others voice their opinions first.

Anyways, the skeleton is posted for the utility/Rapid Spin set.

although I'm unsure how to incorporate this without having many slashes, dragon tail is more or less equal to roar but hits espeon.

Honestly I'd say move Roar and Haze to AC and put Dragon Tail there in their place. After Ice Beam and Toxic though.

It looks fine other than that, I'll let other members weigh in though. Also, isn't it Scald not Boil Over? w/e

Moved Roar and Haze to AC.
Yeah, it's Scald. *fixed*

Ok then, put it in the AC perhaps? (Scarf Water Spout)
I still personally don't think Scarf even warrants to be put in AC either.

Put Chansey in Additional Comments as a partner, they make an amazing combination.
Done.

Nit picking the second bullet point of the overview -

Blastoise is also the only one out of them that has a good Special Defense stat.
Isn't Blastoise the only Water-type to get Rapid Spin in UU anyways? The first bullet point implies that other Water-type Pokemon in UU get Rapid Spin. That isn't true. He's also not the only UU bulky Water-type with a good Special Defense Stat. So, what're you trying to say, exactly?

There is Kabutops, but since he's RU (and has terrible typing) I suppose it doesn't matter.
I wasn't implying that Blastoise is the only bulky Water-type with good Special Defense. I was implying he's one of the few Rapid Spinners with a good Special Defense stat (others being Hitmontop, but that rarely uses a specially defensive set, Cyroganal which has crappy Defense, and Claydol who has terrible typing).

Edited out the second bullet point since there aren't any other Water-type Rapid Spinners in UU.

I apologize that it took me so long to say this (I waited until the end of the round), but Blastoise works really well with offensive. Hydro Pump/(HP Grass or Ice Beam)/Focus Blast/Rapid Spin iwth maxed SpA and (EDIT: Speed was supposed to be HP) HP worked well for me; at the very least, Focus Blast deserves mention for its ability to surprise Empoleon that think they can wall it.

Aqua Jet, seemingly stupid, is actually usable on sets because it can gain a torrent boost and subsequently be rather powerful.

I'm not sure you need a DW section. Rain Dish is already available and the egg moves and 4th gen moves missed are very negligible.

Although it is hard to stop Blastoise from doing his job of Rapid Spinning, any set without Ice Beam allows any Grass-type to come in with impunity and threaten him with super effective attacks, especially those with the ability Natural Cure to rid them of a possible burn from Scald. It will also rid them of a threatening Toxic if Blastoise opts to use it. This includes Grass-types like Roserade (who is even immune to Toxic), Celebi, and Shaymin, all of which have a great Special Defense stat and can take little damage from Blastoise's attacks outside of Ice Beam.

[Dream World]

Blastoise gets the ability Rain Dish from the Dream World. This ability is useless outside of Rain Dance, so Torrent should be the ability used on all sets. However, Rain Dish on a Rain Dance support set could prove quite useful recovering 1/16th of Blastoise's HP each turn, allowing him to stay alive longer and of course, support his team with Rain Dance support longer.
Changes implemented, thanks.
Could a GP member stamp this for GP 1 please?

I apologize that it took me so long to say this (I waited until the end of the round), but Blastoise works really well with offensive. Hydro Pump/(HP Grass or Ice Beam)/Focus Blast/Rapid Spin iwth maxed SpA and Speed worked well for me; at the very least, Focus Blast deserves mention for its ability to surprise Empoleon that think they can wall it.

Aqua Jet, seemingly stupid, is actually usable on sets because it can gain a torrent boost and subsequently be rather powerful.

I'm not sure you need a DW section. Rain Dish is already available and the egg moves and 4th gen moves missed are very negligible.
QC members have any opinions on this?
