Arena: Protegas' Sanctuary

A 50ft-by-50ft stone temple for the relatively unknown deity Protegas that provides protection to those who seek it. The room is lit by torches that provide ample light. There is a fountain in one of the walls that provides a water source for moves like Surf. The arena is set indoors so weather moves, SolarBeam and Thunder cannot be used. Despite being ancient, the temple still has a relatively strong structure that allows seismic moves like Earthquake, Bulldoze and Magnitude to be used up to 3 times in total (not 3 times each though). The floor can be dug through as well but, because it is made of stone, the energy cost for Dig is increased by 2 for pokemon that aren't rock- or ground-type.

At the beginning of every round, Protegas will protect any pokemon he feels is being ganged up on. A pokemon is considered to be ganged up on if it is targeted by:
  • At least four enemy single-target moves
  • Three enemy single-target moves and at least two enemy multi-target moves
  • Two enemy single-target moves and four enemy multi-target moves
  • At least five enemy multi-target moves
Any pokemon that meets any of those criteria will be given a protective barrier for that round. The barrier will absorb up to 15 HP worth of damage or up to two non-damaging effects from enemy moves (including stat changes and flinches), whichever comes first. The barrier will always disappear at the end of the round. The barrier will not protect a pokemon from allied attacks that hit it, nor will it be affected by allied attacks. A pokemon can still be considered ganged up on if it is the last pokemon on its team.

Go Empoleon and Lucario!
No mercy!!!!!!!

Empoleon, begin by using Swagger on Poliwhirl. Then, use Grass Knot on it, before trying to get a burn on Horsea with Scald. If it uses Hypnosis and is successful, jump in front of it to prevent it from hitting Lucario.

Lucario, boost up with a Swords Dance, before smacking that Poliwhirl with a Hi Jump Kick, and then a Drain Punch. If he encores the Swords Dance, change it for a Drain Punch.

Fun fact: Empoleon resists EVERY SINGLE MOVE in the entire Horsea lines movepool.
Except Hidden Power.
I got hidden power electric for exactly this reason, I'm actually quite happy I'm getting a chance to use it so soon.

Anyway, to begin with let's get Poliwag underground with Dig before he gets confused. Don't come up yet, stay safe. Horsea, hit Empoleon with Hidden Power. :D
Poliwag, wait for everyone else to move before you pop back up. Horsea, hit Empoleon with a nice inky Smokescreen. Now Poliwag, once everyone has attacked pop and and strike Empoleon with Dig. Congrats! You've avoided Swagger and Grass Knot, and made Lucario injure himself with Jump Kick. Good show!
Horsea, we're not too concerned with Scald since we're hitting from the special spectrum. Just take the brunt and strike back with Surf. Poliwag, you can also afford to take a hit; Swagger, Grass Knot, Hi Jump Kick and Drain Punch should give you Protegas' protection as you go in for a quick Dig attack against Lucario!

edit: fyi elDino I don't have a Poliwhirl. :D

Are you sure? Bulbapedia says it affects all adjecent opponents, and -1 stats attacks generally affect both opponents in doubles (eg Growl, Tail Whip).

Fixed regardless.

OK, my bad, Veekun was wrong and SmokeScreen does actually hit both opponents. The confusion about SmokeScreen is the reason this reffing has taken so long. We had to get someone to test it in-game.

And so the battle begins: Kappa the Horsea and Nu the Poliwag, two rather small pokemon, must face the giants Destruction the Lucario and Domination the Empoleon. Protegas senses that Nu is being ganged up on so he provides Nu with some protection. However, Nu has his own way of avoiding the enemy attacks: he Digs into the stone floor while Destruction does a spinning Swords Dance to boost his powers. Domination tries to Swagger at Nu but, since the Poliwag is underground, the move fails. Kappa finishes by unleashing her Hidden Power on the Empoleon, striking it hard.

Destruction performs a Hi Jump Kick aimed at the hole Nu made in the floor, but can't hit the Poliwag himself and crashes into the floor. Nu decides it's time to come back up and Digs out of the ground right into Domination, hitting him hard too. However, the Empoleon sensed this and, fortunately for him, there were a few vines that had broken through the floor over the centuries. Domination uses one of these to trip Nu up with a Grass Knot and, though the barrier protects it from the brunt of the attack, it can't protect Nu from the full power of the move and it disappears. Kappa finishes by spraying ink to form a Smoke Screen that gets in Domination and Destruction's eyes, hindering their vision.

But not by enough. Domination Punches the now unprotected Nu and Drains his life force. Angered, Nu Digs underground again while Domination fires a blast of Scalding water at Kappa. It doesn't burn the Horsea however. Kappa then makes her way over to the fountain and generates a huge wave of water big enough to Surf on! As well as hitting the two fully evolved pokemon, the wave of water dissolves the smokescreen and a lot of water goes down the hole Nu dug for himself. However, thanks to his natural abilities, the Poliwag restores health instead of losing it. Finally, Nu pops out of the ground and slams into Destruction.

Ok that went reasonably well.
Nu, begin by using Encore on Empoleon and try to get in front of Horsea, I'm sure you can manage to walk and applaud at the same time. Horsea, help out your teammate, try and get behind Poliwag (as in so he is between you and the Penguin) while firing a Smokescreen.
Next, I want Poliwag to drench* Empoleon with a Water Gun so Horsea can hit it hard with Hidden Power.
After that, we don't want Empoleon protected, so Poliwag can Dig Lucario while Horsea uses Bubblebeam.

Ok guys, this should be ok.

Empoleon, use Agility to get away from that Encore. Then, smack Poliwhirl with a Grass Knot, before following up with a Brick Break.

Lucario
, we're gonna kill Poliwhirl this turn. Begin with a Hi Jump Kick to its face as it protects it's little friend. Then smack him with a Drain Punch. Finally, as he tries to dig us, use Hi Jump Kick to jump out of the way, and smack Horsea in the face.

elDino, it's a Poliwag, not a Poliwhirl. Be glad I'm not making all your actions fail because of that.

Once again, Destruction and Domination are giving the evil eye to Nu, so Protegas puts up another one of his protective barriers on Nu, but it doesn't block Destruction's Hi Jump Kick, which crashes through the barrier and does a small amount of damage to Nu. So much for that, Protegas! But Nu, once again, has other ways of avoiding attacks. He calls for an Encore of Domination's Scald and the Empoleon is only too happy to oblige, so he fires a stream of boiling water at Kappa once more, while the Horsea sprays another SmokeScreen on both Destruction and Domination.

Now having to do double time, Destruction hits Nu with another Drain Punch, restoring some of the health he lost previously, while Nu soaks Domination with a Water Gun. Even though it hit his weak spot, it didn't do much to him but, just after he fires another blast of Scalding water at Kappa (and this time burning her mouth), Kappa unleashes her Hidden Power, which seems to be made more powerful by Nu's water gun!

As if things couldn't get any worse for the titans, Destruction jumps up to perform a Hi Jump Kick but crashes into the floor and hurts himself. Meanwhile, Nu Digs again to avoid an incoming Brick Break from Domination. Kappa's focus changes to Destruction as she fires a BubbleBeam at him, while Nu emerges from the ground to attack Destruction. Two basic pokemon are going toe-to-toe with two much stronger pokemon!

Empoleon.
Swagger on Horsea - Grass Knot Poliwag - Brick Break Poliwag. If he Encores, change first action to Brick Break on Poliwag.
Lucario.
Drain Punch Poliwag - Aura Sphere Poliwag - Drain Punch Poliwag. If Poliwag faints, all actions change to Horsea. This applies for both Pokemon.

Poliwag did you stick a target on yourself? Get out of there man! Go with Dig, but stay underground until the last action. Horsea, it's all you up there now, make the most of it. Start with a Surf to do some damage and heal Poli a little. Then hit Empoleon with Hidden Power twice.
Poliwag, wait until the last action after everyone else has attacked, then strike Empoleon with Dig.

Protegas strongly disapproves of elDino's commands and, for the third time in a row, gives a barrier to Nu. This disappears immediately on contact with Destruction's Drain Punch, but the attack does almost nothing to Nu and hardly restores any of Destruction's vitality. Nu, once again Digs underground to avoid his opponents' attacks, but Domination decides to Swagger at Kappa now. This enrages her, boosting her physical powers, but in her rage, she is susceptible to hitting herself. However, Kappa manages to control her temper as she creates another wave to Surf on, hitting both of her opponents and healing her ally a little. This also removes the smokescreen that was impeding their vision.

Despite being able to see clearly now, Domination and Destruction's next attacks completely miss their underground target. Kappa takes the opportunity to strike Domination with her Hidden Power once again. While Domination hastily and fruitlessly continues to try attacking Nu, the Poliwag emerges from underground and strikes Domination. This triggers a reaction inside him that strengthens his water-based powers. But he doesn't use them. Instead, he Breaks Nu like a Brick while Kappa dives into the stony floor and hurts herself. This also brings her back to her senses however.

If elDino doesn't change his strategy soon, his two prized pokemon are going to suffer a humiliating defeat at the hands of two small pokemon.

Lord Jesseus is up now.

You're doing great guys! Let's try to finish off empoleon. Horsea, use Hidden Power, Poliwag use Dig!
In the second action, Horsea use Disable on Lucario's Drain Punch while Poliwag uses Dig again priority Empoleon>Lucario.
In the final action, Horsea use surf while Poliwag Chills.

This is sooo retarded...
Lucario, begin with a Heal Pulse on Empoleon to restore health, and then Detect against the Disable. Finish off by hitting Poliwag with a Drain Punch.
Empoleon, you might be going down now, but let's do some damage. Begin with an Ice Beam to freeze the ground above Poliwag. He shouldn't be able to come up for another turn! Then, abuse your Torrent ability by using Hydro Pump on Poliwag twice.

Good luck guys!

Destruction and Domination are looking ready to take down Nu for sure this time, but once again, Protegas intervenes and protects Nu from their attacks. Suddenly, there's a change of plans as Destruction emits a Heal Pulse that heals his partner. Meanwhile, Nu Digs underground to avoid an incoming attack, but Domination is clever and uses Ice Beam to cover the hole in ice. Even as Kappa unleashes her Hidden Power once more, the Empoleon is confident that his plan has worked ... until he feels something whack him from below - Nu was smart enough to dig up out of the ground in a different place. From there, he strikes Domination, hurting him badly.

Kappa then tries to Disable Destruction's attacks but Destruction Detects the incoming attack and avoids it, while Nu Digs yet again, this time avoiding Domination's Hydro Pump, and whacking him yet again when he comes back up. To even things out a little, Destruction breaks through Protegas' barrier and hits Nu with a Drain Punch, but while he can absorb a little bit of vitality, he can't absorb any energy, which is what he needed the most. He immediately drops to the ground exhausted. Nu Chills out and restores some energy while Domination hits with a Hydro Pump, but instead of hurting the Poliwag, the attack actually heals him. Finally, Kappa creates another wave of water to Surf on and, while Nu gets healed by it again, it hits Domination particularly hard and brings him to his knees. Shortly afterwards, the Empoleon is down and out, meaning Lord Jesseus' weaker pokemon have prevailed!

Prizes
  • Lord Jesseus gets 2 TC
  • elDino gets 2 Tc
  • Kappa the Horsea gets 1 EC, 2 MC, 1 DC and 2 KOC (she got the last hit on Lucario with Surf in the previous round)
  • Nu the Poliwag gets 1 EC, 2 MC and 1 DC
  • Destruction the Lucario gets 3 MC
  • Domination the Empoleon gets 2 MC and 1 DC
  • In the event that any of the above are already fully evolved and have already unlocked their DW abilities (not as a result of this match), they get 3 MC instead of the usual 1/2/1
  • Objection gets 4 RC

Finally, I would like to say that this arena was intended to make ganging up on one pokemon in a doubles/triples/melee match a much less viable strategy, and I think I can safely say that it has worked. Thanks to elDino focusing on Nu the Poliwag with his attacks, Nu was protected from a total of 60 damage. Sometimes Lord Jesseus came close to giving Domination the Empoleon a barrier but he targeted Destruction the Lucario with enough moves each round to avoid this.

Good game elDino, looks like we've won one each now.Rematch sometime eh? :p
Thanks for reffing Objection. You're choice of arena was very interesting, it certainly achieved what it was designed to. The fact that every attack destroyed the barrier immediately was terrifying though I'll tell you that much...
