[Overview]

Though outclassed by more potent Swift Swim sweepers, Goldeen still packs quite the punch, and is not to be underestimated. It hits 30 Speed in the rain, allowing it to outspeed most threats and smack them first with a
STAB rain-boosted Waterfall. Goldeen's Water typing also gives it only two weaknesses, which is a boon for any offensively-oriented Pokemon. Unfortunately, Goldeen is too easily countered by walls such as Frillish and Ferroseed, and also has trouble setting up Rain Dance in the first place as it is too easily forced out. Despite these flaws, Goldeen can fit into rain teams pretty well, and should always be considered when building a team.

[SET COMMENTS]

This set is Goldeen's best bet at pulling off a sweep. STAB Waterfall in the rain can
inflict some serious damage, hitting anything that doesn't resist it very hard. Return complements Waterfall very well, dealing with opposing Water-types and granting Goldeen great neutral coverage. Megahorn hits the Grass-types who can sponge Goldeen's boosted Water-type attacks with ease. More importantly, it also hits Ferroseed, who laughs at the other moves on this set pretty hard.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread maximizes Goldeen's Attack and Speed while adding a point to its
defenses. An Adamant nature is preferred over Jolly, since Goldeen needs all the power it can get its fins on, and boosting Speed is redundant when considering the fact that Goldeen already hits an unassailable 30 Speed in the rain. Life Orb is the item of choice, boosting the power of Goldeen's attacks and turning some 3HKOs into 2HKOs. The latter is all the more crucial in the fast-paced metagame that Little Cup is. Since Frillish walls this set cold, teammates which can check it aid Goldeen immensely. Ferroseed beats Frillish with Bullet Seed, and can also set up Spikes, making it easier for Goldeen to sweep. Shed Skin Scraggy and Pawniard deal with Frillish effectively as well. Magnemite also makes a fine partner, as it can trap and finish off Ferroseed with ease while also benefiting from the rain, which allows it to run an accurate STAB Thunder. Finally, Bronzor and Goldeen have good synergy, with the former being able to set up Rain Dance, thus freeing up a moveslot for the latter.

[Other Options]

Goldeen can run a special set consisting of Hydro Pump, Hidden Power Grass, Ice Beam, and Rain Dance, but its terrible base 35 Special Attack makes this a bad idea. Bounce is an option to hit Frillish, but
it is innacurate, highly predictable, and Goldeen will find it tough to spare a moveslot for the it. Aqua Tail can be used for more power, but Waterfall is accurate and also has a chance to flinch, which could be game-changing. Poison Jab can be used to hit Grass-types, but this is already achieved by Megahorn, and Poison Jab has no use otherwise. Agility is an option for a boosting move, but it is outclassed by Rain Dance, which also boosts Waterfall's Base Power. Goldeen also has access to support options such as Knock Off, Haze, Toxic, Protect, and Aqua Ring, and while it can run a support set in the rain, it is better off just attacking. Damp Rock can be used for three more turns of rain, but Goldeen will badly miss the power boost granted by Life Orb.

[Checks & Counters]

Eviolite Frillish walls Goldeen to the moon and back, as it resists or is immune to all the moves on this set, packs Will-O-Wisp to
cripple Goldeen, and smacks it pretty hard with STAB Shadow Ball. Ferroseed does a decent job as well, as it comfortably takes Megahorn while OHKOing with Bullet Seed. Faster Swift Swim users such as Anorith, Buizel, and Poliwag check Goldeen pretty well too, KOing it with the appropriate attack.

[Dream World]

Goldeen gets Lightningrod from the Dream World. While this gives Goldeen a very handy immunity to Electric-type moves and boosts its Special Attack when hit by the former, Goldeen's lone niche is its access to Swift Swim, and it just cannot afford to lose that.

[Overview]

Goldeen has a good speed and also has decent attack stats. With Swift Swim, Goldeen can run a good Rain Dance set. Since Goldeen has a small movepool, it can only run an attacking set. Goldeen's Water-type gives it only two weakness, which can be helpful to Goldeen since this may allow it to attack for more turns. It is able to hit 17 attack and 15 speed, which can be very useful. In rain, Goldeen can hit 30 speed in rain, which is quite fast. Though outclassed by more potent Swift Swim sweepers, Goldeen still packs quite the punch, and is not to be underestimated. [SET COMMENTS]

Rain Dance is the only set Goldeen can utilize without being fully outclassed. Waterfall with its relatively high base power, combined with a STAB boost, Life Orb boost and Rain boost can pack a serious punch in the opponent's Pokemon. Megahorn provides good coverage and allows Goldeen to hurt Grass-types, which can otherwise prove to be a serious threat. Megahorn also allows Goldeen to hit opposing Water-types, especially Slowpoke. Return provides good neutral coverage and when paired with Waterfall, hit everything except Frillish and Ferroseed. Feroseed takes neutral damage from Megahorn This set is Goldeen's best bet at pulling off a sweep. Megahorn hits the Grass-types who can sponge Goldeen's boosted Water-type attacks with ease. More importantly, it also hits Ferroseed, who laughs at the other moves on this set, pretty hard.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Life Orb provides Goldeen some power that can allow it to hit opposing Pokemon harder. This helps Goldeen turn some 3HKOes into 2HKOes, which can be useful in a fast paced metagame like Little Cup. Swift Swim allows it to do significant damage or even sweep Pokemon, due to the boost in speed. Adamant increases Goldeen's Attack slightly. This is more important than Speed, since speed gets boosted under rain. The specified EV spread maximises its Attack and Speed, and increases both defenses by a point.

Ferroseed can set up Spikes on Frillish, which is a great counter to Goldeen. Shed Skin Scrafty can also set up on Frillish. Pawniard can hit Frillish hard with a Dark-type STAB attack. Magnemite can trap Ferroseed, and defeat it with STAB Thunder in the rain. Bronzor too has good synergy with Goldeen, and can provide Rain Dance, which also removes Bronzor's only weakness. As such these Pokemon aforementioned make good teammates to Goldeen.

[Other Options]

Goldeen can run a Special set with Hydro Pump, Hidden Power Grass, Ice Beam and Rain Dance, but Special Attack only hits 14, which is not as good as the Rain Dance set. Bounce is an option but it doesn't offer much coverage, and isn't very reliable. Aqua Tail can be used for more power, but the extra accuracy and the chance to flinch provided by Waterfall is useful. Poison Jab is an option but it only hits Grass-types, something Megahorn already achieves. Agility can be used, but is outclassed by Rain Dance, which also boosts the power of it's STAB attacks. It can run a Rain Dance support set with a bulky EV spread, but Goldeen is better off attacking. Damp Rock can be used for 3 more turns of rain, but the loss of power from Life Orb is not worth it.

[Checks & Counters]

Ferroseed walls this set almost without problems. Megahorn can pose as a threat to Ferroseed at times with critical hits. Eviolite Frillish also puts a complete halt to this set, due to its useful typing giving it resistances to all of Goldeen's attacks. Faster Swift Swimmers like Buizel, Poliwag and Anorith can outspeed Goldeen and KO it with an appropriate move Eviolite Frillish walls Goldeen to the moon and back, as it resists or is immune to all the moves on this set, packs Will-O-Wisp to ruin Goldeen, and smacks it pretty hard with STAB Shadow Ball. [Dream World]

Goldeen receives Lightningrod as a Dream World ability. Lightningrod can be used as an ability, but Rain Dance is not compatible with Lightningrod, so a filler move can be used over Rain Dance, and a teammate can set up Rain Dance instead.
