Sandpocalypse

Introduction
Hey everyone, this is my first OU team, and decided to start with one of the most popular kind of teams in this generation: Weather Teams.
This is a sandstorm team, and the main reason I did this is so I can get used to the 5th gen metagame, abusing entry hazards, phazing, and of course the famous Excadrill. Yeah I posted this team in serebii forums too. So here it goes:

Team Building
450.gif

Hippowdon has been my favorite sandstream pokemon, (sorry Tyranitar) he's very bulky, has access to recovery and Roar.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I need something to set up hazards, and spin. Forretress was there, and he's pretty great doing his job.

I'm going for a phazer now, I was having parashuffling Dragonite but sandstorms breaks his Multiscale. So a great bulky pokemon, Gyarados

Now, what's a sandstorm team without Excadrill? He's a beast so I'm using it, he will be my set up sweeper.

With a lot of entry hazards, a Rapid Spinner can destroy my strategy, so I need a spin blocker. Substitute sets for Gengar are annoying so he'll be my spin blocker and my annoyer.

To destroy walls that can stop Excadrill from sweeping, I chose Choice Specs Latios, and he can be a good revenge killer.

After some testing, Hippowdon didn't help so much, so I'm using Tyranitar now.

I replaced Latios for Latias because I need a special wall to stop most of my team biggest threats.

THE TEAM
248.gif

Tyranitar @Chople Berry
Trait: Sandstream
EVs: 252 HP / 180 SpA / 76 SpDef
Quiet Nature
-Stealth Rocks
-Fire Blast/Superpower
-Ice Beam
-Crunch

MixedTyranitar is going to be my lead, setting up the sandstorm and setting up Stealth Rock. He has a Chople Berry so he can take an opposing Tyranitar's Superpower and resist weak non-STABed Fighting attacks. Ice Beams 1-2OHKOs Gliscor who will switch in thinking it's a Jolly/SpDefensive set, and Fire Blast kills most fire weak pokemons like Scizor. I may choose Superpower because I'm walled by pokemons such as Heatran and opposing Tyranitars.

205.gif

Forretress @Shed Shell
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpDef / 4 Def
Careful Nature
-Toxic Spikes
-Spikes
-Payback
-Rapid Spin

He sets the entry hazards and spin opposing hazards. Shed Shell is to escape from Magnezones I see 3 of each 10 battles, but I maybe replace it for Leftovers. Why Payback? It's there because it can kill spin blockers, such as 2OHKOing Jellicent after he Scalds Forretress.

130.gif

Gyarados @Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 208 Def / 52 SDef

Impish Nature
-Rest
-Sleep Talk
-Waterfall
-Dragon Tail

Standard SleepTalk set. Gyarados in a sandstorm team? OH YES. He is the MVP of my team, and one of the main reasons I made this. He can take hits like a boss, and still make much damage. He's a nice physical wall, and thanks to Intimdiate he can annoy pokemons like Scizor, Excadrill, and other physicall sweepers. With the entry hazards in the opposing team, Gyarados just spams Dragon Tail dealing damage and phazing. When I have low health or a status, I just rest and sleep talk.

excadrill_animated_sprite_by_devinwarriors-d382np0.gif

Excadrill @Air Balloon
Trait: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Speed / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
-Sword Dance
-Earthquake
-Rock Slide
-Return

The Excadrill everyone uses. Jolly nature because I want more speed, and Return for neutral coverage. Nothing too much to say, he's a great sweeper. Air Balloon is for safety against EQ users. The reason I run Jolly and no Life Orb, is so I can counter opposing Drills (unless Brick Break versions), outspeed them and they can't EQ me.

094.gif

Gengar @Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Speed / 4 HP
Timid Nature
-Shadow Ball
-Focus Miss
-Substitute
-Disable

SubDisable Gengar, damn it's so annoying. Specially to walls that only are carrying 1-2 attacks, and he can do a lot of damage with STAB Shadow Ball. Gengar is my team's annoyer, and it helps to stop pokemons such as CM Reuniclus.

380.gif

Latias @Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Speed / 4 SpA
-Calm Mind
-Recover
-Dragon Pulse
-Roar / Heal Bell
Latias is my Special Wall to take threats like Politoed, Rotom-W, Reuniclus, and most special attackers. She has great offense too after some Calm Minds. I'm not sure on Roar or Heal Bell, since my team is screwed by status conditions (such as paralyze and poison) and I have nothing to heal them. Roar could be another phaze move, tough.

Previous members
381.gif

Latios @Choice Specs
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 Speed / 252 SpA / 4 HP
Timid Nature
-Trick
-Psyshock
-Draco Meteor
- Hidden Power Fire

Latios was something like my revenge killer, but he was frail and died easily in sandstorm. So I just run Latias now.
450.gif

Hippowdon @Leftovers
Trait: Sandstream
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpDef / 4 Def
Careful Nature
-Earthquake
-Yawn
-Stealth Rock
-Slack Off

Hippowdon was my lead and my Stealth Rock set up before, but he was getting walled by levitate or flying types, and with a strong Grass or Water STABed attack, he died so easy.
Conclusion
I tested this team in PO, and it has been very succesful for me, however I'm looking for rates and suggestions because this is my very first sandstorm team :)

Threat List
Rotom-W
Opposing Excadrill
Other weather teams, specially rainy and politoed
Toxicroak
..I'll put more later.

Hey Farfan, really nice semi stall team you have here. First off, I would definitley recommend making the Latios -> Latias change you mentioned, because with Latias you'll have a much easier time handling CM Reuniclus and her Roar would be great for stacking up residual damage with all your hazards. Latias also gives you a bit more of a solid switch in to Rain sweepers like Rotom.

Volcarona and Thundurus seem really threatening to your team. You can't always rely on Excadrill to take them out (since sand won't always be up) so I recommend using Scarf Landorus over Excadrill. | Landorus @ Scarf | Naive | 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd | EQ | Stone Miss | HP Ice | U-Turn |. Landorus gives you a reliable way of revenge killing the afformentioned threats in and out of sand.

Finally if you decide to use Heal Bell on Latias, definatly consider Rest on Forretress. Shed Shell is really useful, but the loss of Lefties recovery really hurts. Rest + Heal bell remidies this and gives your Forretress much more time of hazard stacking.

gl! Sorry for the lame rate ^-^", I couldn't find much problems!

Hey Farfan, thats a great team you have here. It lacks a bit of proper moveset on most of your pokes but I think we can easily fix that. As you were saying that you're having trouble against rain teams to fix that issue I would definitely run CM Lati@s over Latios. Here's the set:
380.gif

Latias (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Roar
- Dragon Pulse
- Roost
This paired up with Spikes + Stealth Rock support is a great scouting strategy. This will help you overcome your Rain weakness and giving a solid stall-Breaker poke. Next your Tyranitar I'd suggest running something like this:
248.gif

Tyranitar (F) @ Chople Berry
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 236 HP / 24 Atk / 232 SDef / 16 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Crunch/Pursuit
- Rock Slide
- Superpower
This moveset/evs will give you great coverage for a lead. Setting up hazards is always the priority and still being able to do a lot of damage to your opponents pokes is also a key to win. Crunch/Pursuit is for Latios, Lati@s, Gengar, Reuniclus and etc. Rock Slide is for dragons, Volcarona, etc. Superpower is generally for bulky steel types and other pokes who are weak to it. I'd also suggest running Volt Switch on Forretress than Toxic Spikes. You could also try running Toxic on your Forretress instead of payback with leftovers instead of the shed Shell. Gyarados needs to be removed in order to support your team really well with:
472.gif

Gliscor (F) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Taunt
- Swords Dance
- Ice Fang
- Earthquake
Gliscor is great poke to counter common sand threats and yet having the potential to sweep. Taunt is basically there so your opponent has no chance except to attack you. Sword Dance is for boost, Ice Fang is for Dragons and Earthquake is for others who can't get a lot of damage by Ice Fang. On your Excadrill I'd suggest replacing it with this set:
530.gif

Excadrill (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Sand Rush
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Frustration
- Swords Dance
- Rock Slide
You need more power on Excadrill. This set will give you a lot of opportunities to sweep properly than the old jolly set. Earthquake is for stab, Frustration is to hit Gliscor, Rotom-W and others hard. Swords Dance is for boost once again and Rock Slide is for the Flyging Types. After these changes your team should look almost perfect. Lastly I would suggest running a female nature on all of your pokes to deal with CB Rivalry Haxorus better.

Glad it helped. Good Luck!

Cool team. I just have one thing; replace Return with X-Scissor on Excadrill so that you won't have to reply on a speed tie to kill Latios.

Since your not running Life orb or Adamant on Excadrill, you either need to put in brickbreak for ferrothorn because it can still hurt you, or x-scissor for Latios/Latias

I've had a lot of success with Scald Gyarados; Same EV spread with -ATK nature. It's a great wall verse Rain, answers your physical threats even better, and Scald does tolerable damage if you're in the rain.

I've found Roar to be >>> Dragon Tail on either your or my set, though. SubCM Jirachi and Latias look like they could do a number to the team.

Scizor + Rotom-W cores, LO Starmie under the rain and Double Booster Terrakion look like potential problems for your team. The Scizor+Rotom-W core can be very annoying for you as the two can switch in very easily against Tyranitar, Gyarados, or Latias, force you to switch, and make you eat Volt Switch / U-turn as they switch to their partner to take you on. E.g. If Scizor comes against Latias, you will be forced to switch to Gyarados, who will eat a U-turn and come face to face against Rotom-W. Starmie in the rain can outspeed your entire team and OHKO-2HKO everything from there. You can bring in Tyranitar to change the weather and weaken its Hydro Pump, but you will be outsped and killed. Lastly, Terrakion can be troublesome if it has its Air Baloon intact, and gets in a SD against Tyranitar, in which case none of your members will be able to stand up to its attacks, and the members that outspeed it won't KO.

Physically Defensive Quagsire over Gyarados will help you against Scizor + Rotom-W cores as well as Terrakion. With Quagsire being immune to Rotom-W's Volt Switch, it won't be able to carry out its strategy, while Scizor has to be vary of Scald burn, since CB U-turn doesn't hit Quagsire hard enough due to Unaware. Unaware also ignores Terrakion's boosts, not allowing it to KO Quagsire, while you can force it out with Yawn and hurt it with Scald. What Quagsire has over Gyarados is a more reliable way of recovery with Recover, while being able to handle a larger variety of Physical attackers thanks to Unaware. Not having to rely on Rapid Spin and having perfect typing synergy with Forretress is also nice.

Changing Tyranitar to the Scarf Variant will not only solve your issues against LO Starmie, but it also means taking out sun teams is a lot easier, as you outspeed and OHKO Ninetales. Beating other Special Attackers in general such as LO Latios and NP Celebi is also nice. Stone Edge | Crunch | Pursuit | Ice Punch, Jolly Nature, 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Change Stealth Rock over Spikes on Forretress with Tyranitar being a Scarf variant. I feel T-Spikes are more beneficial for your team, as they weaken Blissey / Chansey for your special attackers making sweeping teams easier. Hidden Power Fire over Roar on Latias is also a good option, since you give Spikes users a lot of free opportunities to switch in and set-up, and HP Fire handles most of them (Ferro, Skarm, etc.), while giving you further coverage. Last Pokemon Reuniclus gives you problems even with Roar, though Gengar can take it out with Disable + Shadow Ball, and Quagsire puts it to sleep with Yawn. Also, go with Gyro Ball over Forretress since the new Pay Back mechanics suck, not letting you get that 100 BP when an opponent switches in to Forry.

195.png

Quagsire (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Def
Relaxed nature (+Def, -Spe)
- Scald
- Recover
- Yawn / Toxic
- Earthquake

Thanks everyone, I'm testing your suggestions now. :)
I will be using Adamant Excadrill now, and I'm testing ScarfTar.

This team seems like it would struggle against opposing sand teams, as Gyarados and your own Excadrill seem to be your only answers to it. I suggest running Rapid Spin on Excadrill. This opens up an entire teamslot in Forretress' place. I suggest using Skarmory. It is a superior physical wall. Can pretty much take an entire sand team on its own, and retains spikestacking capabilities. With so many Levitators/ flying types/ steel types/ air balloons/ clerics. Toxic Spikes is not that great an entry hazard. Leftovers instead of Shed Shell because Magnezone into Skarmory is about as predictable as Gliscor into Excadrill, and you should have no trouble playing around it.

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Sturdy
Impish
252 Hp/ 252 Def/ 4 SpD
Brave Bird
Roost
Spikes
Whirlwind

Yeah you're right, foretress isn't that good, and I tested Skarm > Forre, wich makes a good combo with Latias. It gives me, however, another electric weakness. And toxic spikes rarely hits something, everything has levitate/flying type/steel <_<

Thanks!

Hey there.

Two major threats for your team are double boosting Terrakion and enemy Excadrill. Relying on your Excadrill to keep it's Balloon and also win the potential speed tie is not a very reliable strategy; Terrakion just decimates you regardless. A Bulk Up Conkeldurr with Stone Edge can also give you problems. Gengar is easily your most replaceable member, especially since it can't heal after setting up subs because of sandstorm. Therefore, replace Gengar with a Tangrowth.

Defensive Tangrowth
Tangrowth @ Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature
-Leech Seed
-Sleep Powder
-Hidden Power Ice
-Giga Drain

Tangrowth has been steadily increasing in popularity recently, and for good reason. Regenerator makes it very hard to kill Tangrowth, especially with Leech Seed recovering it's health on the battle field. Excadrill cannot hope to beat Tangrowth; neither can Terrakion or Conkeldurr. Pokemon such as Scizor that are a threat to Tangrowth are taken care of by Gyarados, making it an even better choice for your team.

Definitely run Leftovers over Shed Shell on Forretress and run Volt Switch over Payback. Jellicent can just burn Forretress with Will-O-Wisp, so Payback won't be as useful. Volt Switch allows you to switch in Tyranitar safely on a predicted switch to Jellicent, and play some mind games with your opponent. It also stops Forretress from being complete setup fodder to the likes of Gyarados. Also, Leftovers should be the item of choice seeing as Magnezone isn't as popular nowadays, and Forretress needs all of the recovery that it can get. Also, run Spikes over Toxic Spikes. It is usually better to have Spikes + Stealth Rock than Toxic Spikes + Stealth Rock, as Spikes effects many more pokemon than Toxic Spikes and it can keep the pressure up on your opponent much better.

Finally, definitely keep Roar over Heal Bell on Latias. It can help you phaze your opponent and severely damage them with Spikes + Stealth Rock damage. It can also help you phaze out dangerous threats such as Calm Mind Reuniclus and Calm Mind Jirachi, and basically allows Latias to win every Calm Mind war.

Overall, solid team. Hope I helped, and good luck!
