Crawdaunt [GP 2/2]

[Overview]

Crawdaunt was never a very good Pokemon in past generations. It had strong STABs and a high base Attack, but its pathetic Base 55 Speed stat kept it from doing pretty much anything useful. However, its first ray of light came when it obtained Dragon Dance as an HGSS Egg move. This allowed Crawdaunt to finally raise its Speed and possibly even attempt a sweep. Although the power of the metagame around it has risen dramatically, Crawdaunt has only improved in the 5th Generation. It received the ability Adaptability from the Dream World, raising its STAB modifier from 1.5x to 2x. Combined with the excellent coverage of Water- and Dark-type STABs, Crawdaunt has the raw power to smash through many teams in UU after a Dragon Dance. Although Feraligatr may seem to outclass Crawdaunt in a sweeping role, Crawdaunt boasts a secondary Dark-type STAB to dispose of walls such as Deoxys-D. However, Crawdaunt still has its fair share of problems on the defensive side. Its paper-thin defenses mean that priority moves spell trouble for our dancing friend, especially considering that Crawdaunt's secondary Dark typing give it a weakness to Mach Punch and Vacuum Wave. In addition, even after a Dragon Dance, Crawdaunt can be revenge killed by fast Pokemon thanks to its abysmal Speed. Overall, if you need a sweeper for a UU team, it's always worth giving Crawdaunt a look.

[SET]
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Waterfall
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Superpower / Taunt / Substitute
item: Life Orb
ability: Adaptability
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 244 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set makes use of the move Dragon Dance to raise Crawdaunt's Speed and Attack. After one boost, it outspeeds Pokemon with a base Speed of 105 and reaches 508 Attack, enabling it to break through many UU teams. Coupled with Crawdaunt's excellent dual Base 160 Power STABs, the crab will have very few troubles sweeping given the proper support.

The moves employed on this set are fairly straightforward. Dragon Dance is the basis of the set, boosting Crawdaunt's Attack and Speed to prime it for a sweep. Waterfall and Crunch are Crawdaunt's main attacks, with their awesome combined coverage capable of hitting almost every Pokemon in UU for neutral damage. However, the last slot is a much more difficult choice to make. Superpower is the primary option, enabling Crawdaunt to massacre Ferroseed and Empoleon, which would otherwise wall it. However, Taunt shuts down walls and prevents them from hitting Crawdaunt with a crippling status effect or setting up hazards or stat boosts. Substitute also stops Crawdaunt from being affected by status, and has the added bonus of allowing Crawdaunt to scout for moves its opponent may be able to stop it with.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs on this set could hardly be more simple, enabling Crawdaunt to outspeed Pokemon with a base Speed of 105 after a Dragon Dance, and giving it maximum attack power to help it blast through teams. The leftover 12 EVs go into Crawdaunt's HP, giving it a bit of help with taking stray resisted attacks. A Jolly nature enables Crawdaunt to outspeed Pokemon with a base Speed of up to 105 that also have a boosting nature, but if you really want extra power an Adamant nature is usable. A Life Orb is the suggested item because Crawdaunt needs all the power it can get, and isn't bulky at all so an item such as Leftovers does it no good. Crabhammer can be used for a slight increase in Base Power, but Waterfall's accuracy and flinch chance are far more useful.

The best teammates for this set are those that eliminate Crawdaunt's counters and help it sweep. Dugtrio is a great option for taking out Raikou, which gives Crawdaunt a lot of trouble. Dugtrio can also eliminate Empoleon, because if Crawdaunt doesn't employ Superpower, the metal penguin can wall the crab easily. Checks for Hitmontop and Arcanine are necessary to use with Crawdaunt. Slowbro works well for checking both of them, and Celebi is a great check for Hitmontop. In addition, a user of the move Rain Dance can be quite beneficial to Crawdaunt, as rain boosts Waterfall's Base Power to a ridiculous 270.

[Other Options]

While there are a few other sets that Crawdaunt can employ, most of them fall flat due to its terrible Speed. A Choice Band set can be used for huge power immediately, but unlike the Dragon Dance set it can't switch moves and is revenged very easily since it has no way to boost its Speed. Swords Dance gives Crawdaunt simply massive power. Almost nothing in UU can avoid a OHKO from a Crawdaunt with +2 Attack. However, it also suffers from the problem of having awful Speed, allowing it to be easily revenge killed.

[Checks and Counters]

Priority is an excellent way of checking Crawdaunt due to its awful defenses. Hitmontop is amazingly adept at this, OHKOing Crawdaunt with a STAB Mach Punch and even packing Intimidate to cushion the blow on its way in. While Arcanine can pick off weakened Crawdaunt with Extremespeed, if the crab is still in good health it can take the hit and massacre Arcanine with a STAB Water-type attack. Even after one Dragon Dance, Raikou, Azelf, and Jolteon that run speed-increasing natures outspeed Crawdaunt and can easily OHKO it with Electric- and Grass-type moves. If Crawdaunt does not use Superpower, Ferroseed and Empoleon can soak up anything Crawdaunt can throw at them easily. In addditon, Tangrowth can take a boosted Crunch easily and retaliate with a STAB Grass-type move. Lastly, the extremely rare Poliwrath takes negligible damage from anything Crawdaunt can do and phazes it out with STAB Circle Throw.

wtf it doesn't get Aqua Jet -.-

anyways, mention Ferroseed in the Checks and Counters, it resists everything but fighting moves and can cripple with Thunder Wave or Leech Seed or both.

Qwilfish is also a good check with intimidate, and it can haze away any boosts. On that note, any bulky water is a decent check, milotic too as it has haze and can toxic you unless you run taunt. For that reason, I would emphasize Taunt over Frustration, as Empoleon still resists all three moves

No mention of Superpower? I know the side effects suck, but it hits way harder than lol Brick Break

EDIT: lol totally did not realize there was another thread Chou

Mentioned Ferroseed

Completely forgot Superpower, replaced Brick Brake with SUPERPOWAAAAAH

The problem with things like Milotic is that before they get off a Haze they're taking around 70-80% from a boosted Crunch. Not a very good check.

EDIT: Didn't realize there was already a QC Approved analysis. I'll transfer the info later today, it's 2 AM and I'm tired as hell.

FOR NOW, NOBODY POST HERE

Choice Band is actually Crawdaunt's best set in my opinion, I've even used it in OU. Speed isn't your main issue when you're talking about wallbreakers - power and coverage are the two key factors that make it threatening. Between Crunch, Waterfall/Crabhammer, and Superpower, Crawdaunt covers everything in the game, and its Crabhammer alone has a chance to 2HKO 252 HP Empoleon after Stealth Rock damage. Imagine what its Crunch will do to Milotic or Cresselia.

If it's too slow to do anything, it's Dragon Dance; do not expect a sweep of any kind after you DD. You mostly want to get surprise kills on walls that try to beat you or slower sweepers that aim to check you after switching in on the right move. Choice Band makes the best use of its new ability that actually gives a chance to be a worthwhile powerhouse even with its terrible stats and low base power moves.

Okay, I've added in most of the information from the other analysis. However, there are a few things I added/took out that I'd like QC input on;

-Taunt in front of Substitute on the DD set. The main use of Substitute is to block status, but Taunt does that anyway and shuts down hazards, boosting, etc. without taking away Crawdaunt's precious HP.
-Removed mentions of Leftovers and the special EV spread to make 5 Subs. What's Crawdaunt doing with 6% recovery and an extra Substitute? Toxic stalling?
-Removed Rotom-C from Checks and Counters. Rotom just loses flat out if Crawdaunt is at +1, Scarf sets take a shitload from Waterfall (and are just OHKOd by Crunch iirc) on the switch-in and defensive sets are 2HKOd on the switch by Waterfall+Crunch.

EDIT: Got approval from Oglemi to start the writeup, I'll do that in a few hours

Nitpicky time

However, its first ray of light came when it obtained Dragon Dance from a HGSS Tutor

If that was really the case then we would be tearing stuff apart with DD Garchomps and Flygons now. DD is an Egg Move.

Just saying, if Choice Band is included then that set will have to go through QC which would delay the analysis. I would probably just get SJCrew to make a new thread for that set, especially since the writer doesn't seem to fond of it in the first place; this just makes more sense.

As for the CB set, I'll have to test it. I do like the DD set since it bypasses the average offensive Water-type counters, such as Milotic, Celebi, Roserade, Slowbro and the like.

I'm taking Heysup's suggestion, as I just want to get this done. Go ahead and post QC for CB if you want, SJ. I'll push this through GP later.

Why the rush? Crawdaunt is RU, and a Choice Band set is ludicrously easy to write for a generic powerhouse like him. The most important thing here is having every viable set Crawdaunt can run available to it, and the writer is skipping out on it in favor of doing less work. I mean, it's even still in the QC stage. The work doesn't bother me, but principally, it doesn't sit well with me having to go through hoops for a set that was already approved with an analysis still in the works, all because of a reluctant writer who hasn't bothered to defend his viewpoint. Is this even procedurally correct?

It's actually not in the QC stage (despite the incorrect title). The amount of work, if there is to be a CB set, is essentially equal. We don't have to go through hoops for the DD set. However, after something was already approved with DD as the only set it doesn't seem like the most efficient use of anyone's time to retest and question those QC members opinions again (considering they would have had to test it already too) while also delaying the entire analysis.

If you want my initial opinion, anyway, it's that Crawdaunt is not bulky enough to actually switch into anything more than once (look at any bulky Water's attacks vs Crawdaunt), it can barely take more than one SToss. If Crawdaunt gets in, it will probably do over 50% to something then get forced out. Without the boost from DD and LO it can't OHKO certain Pokemon that are even faster than it (for example, Zapdos). If Crawdaunt has a chance to get in, Dragon Dance has a very significant advantage over CB as far as I've seen.

However, I do see it's merit in some cases, but an LO set would have done equally well in that scenario, and due to Crawdaunt's great coverage with just STAB moves, having an extra move is unneeded...so why not put Dragon Dance there? When you start with a CB set and end up altering it and improving it and end up back to the Dragon Dance set....it's pretty easy to see how it is not recommended as an option over the DD set. I will admit, I haven't tested it fully (I've played a couple matches).

i will check this since request

add etc.
