Smogon on IRC

Please join us to chat on server (irc.synirc.net) and channel #Pokemon for active Pokemon discussion!

#Pokemon is BW's version of #stark, with challenges (often held on a specific ladder), tournaments, cups, and pokemon-centric discussion. We welcome all users to come by to chat, chill, and relax.

Rules:

The standards for the channel are the following:

  1. It is IRC, so we recognize social chatter will occur. This is fine, and we even encourage a light hearted environment. All we ask is that IF pokemon discussion is currently going on, don't sabotage it with non-related discussion. As it is irc, it will inevitably be social, but we ask that you try your best to keep at as focused on Pokemon as possible.
  2. Be civil, and use your common sense. Not much to explain here...just use common sense guys.
  3. Note that #Pokemon's authority is determined by active, intelligent discussion. It isn't determined solely by either, but some slightly arbitrary and mostly subjective combination of both.
Just talk in the channel, remain active, and be both civil and intelligent, and you'll find yourself moving up the ranks in no time ^_^

Here's a link for those who have no idea what IRC is, it directs you to #Pokemon

Status in #Pokemon:

Have you ever noticed those unique characters next to the names you see on IRC? Have you ever wondered what those characters actually mean? They are the representations of status on our IRC channels. Status is given to users who make the effort to be helpful and active in IRC. It also comes with privileges, such as being able to talk even when the chat is muted, or even being able to kick other users. A list of status in decreasing order and the symbols that represent them can be found in the #pokemon status list and #smogon status list.

Status is solely based on activity and contribution to the chat. You can be as active as you want and your status in the chat can go as high as you want to take it. Just remember to speak intelligently and to keep your activity up. Anyone can gain status if they're active, remember!

#Pokemon Chronicles

ok so i want to get these implemented on site at some point but a nice forum spot will serve them well too at the moment. the following post will serve as a record of every #Pokemon Challenge i run:

The #Pokemon "No Hazards" Challenge
Begun: Sept 13th, 2011
Ended: Oct 1st, 2011

The No Hazards challenge was an interesting challenge, testing the idea of how truly necessary entry hazards are in the metagame. The rules of the challenge were simple - Spikes, Stealth Rock, and Toxic Spikes were all banned. Anything else was fair game!

Espeon was an early favorite for the challenge, allowing players to bounce back entry hazards (thus supplying them with their own, or at least keeping the playing field level). Espeon in its own right is a decent Pokemon, but is usually considered below average (hence its tiering (and subsequent banning) of UU). The fact that it was a popular choice here seems to only prove the theory that hazards are so game-changing that players are willing to put in a Pokemon dedicated to just getting them. In fact, this coincides with a popular metagame-trend from last generation; Suicide Leads. Pokemon dedicated to getting up Stealth Rock (and maybe Spikes), even at the risk of having an immediate disadvantage of trailing 6-5.

Another interesting effect of banning hazards for our players was the rise of U-Turning and Volt Switching. As seen here in ToF's 2nd place team, he filled his team with U-Turn and Volt Switch to replace the momentum that hazards had given him. This constant pressure gave him the ability to still dictate matches in the sense entry hazards would. It's important to note the use of Xatu on this team as well, another Pokemon that could use its Magic Mirror ability to steal the opponent's hazards.

One of the biggest complaints I had heard was what I had originally predicted; players felt overwhelmed by threats such as Volcarona. Even in ToF's team, a Volcarona with just one boost would sweep him and it wouldn't be very hard to get in without Stealth Rock on the field. Other dangerous Pokemon included Dragonite, basic Life Orb sweepers, and even old threats such as Gyarados. Obviously entry hazards help keep these Pokemon well in check, but it was truly intriguing to see how powerful they became when hazards weren't available to us. This might have been the biggest reason of all for Espeon's increased usage throughout the challenge (Xatu as well).

On a final note, Baton Pass was rarely used by anyone. I found it to be pretty successful myself, but most players opted for teams with just offensive presence. Perhaps players are too well adjusted for it now after its original suspect nomination? Or perhaps it just isnt as effective as we made it out to be? Regardless, players avoided using Baton Pass in a challenge that seemed to encourage it!

Here is the final list of players and their rankings in the challenge.

The #Pokemon "VGC 12" Challenge
Begun: Oct 5th, 2011
Ended: Oct 26th, 2011

To kick off the VGC 2012 year and recognize the recent addition to the Smogon Server (the VGC 2012 ladder), this challenge began with the goal being to simply "reach the top". Many recognized VGC specialists rose the challenge such as JRank and Human, but the winner, surprising many, was DetroitLolCat who topped the leaderboard with a final ranking of 1250.

I think it became quite clear through the ladder what the top method of play was in VGC 12 - Trick Room. And Trick Room is exactly what DLC used to top the ladder, found here. VGC 12's fast paced metagame definitely surprised a few people but some primarily single players, as is the case with DLC, embraced the change and built effective teams.

A Complete player and alt list can be found below:

Ashenlock - Sirk
Breludicolo - breludicolo_alt_7
Burnt Panda - burnt panda
Charizard92 - [TUS] Charizard92
Chenn - guest

Foxy Grandpa - Foxy Grandpa
Human - Human

Jibaku - Voltros
JRank - JRankurusu

Makiri - UltraDavid
Muffinhead - poof of the poffins
Nexus - Oathkeeper
Ninglido - Ningildo[TEST]
Raseri - Raseri
RBG - RBG
Sandman - Washy
ShakeitUp - dementor
Smith - HOT TAMALE
Solace - Lord of the Flies
Ssbbm - ssbbmdwvgc
StevenSnype - -NVK-
The Wolf - Rose Derrick
TheFourthChaser - TheFourthChaser
Theorymon - Jokemon
Tobes - Tobes
Unreality - Unrealiyt

DetroitLolCat won the challenge, topping the leaderboard with 1250 points while Human came second and JRank placed third. Congratulations to all of them and thank you to everyone who played.

The #Pokemon "Diversity Cup" Challenge
Begun: Oct 29th, 2011
Ended: Nov 17th, 2011

The Diversity Cup was one of the most interesting challenges yet, forcing users to add diversity to their teams from lesser used tiers - the rules following the concept of 1 NU, 1 RU, 2 UU/BL, and 2 OU - many players found themselves using lesser used Pokemon that were given Eviolite to survive in the heavy OU metagame. Other popular choices were Pokemon such as Sharpedo and Mamoswine, who were already considered very anti-meta.

A strategy that seemed to be everyone's favorite was the use of heavy offense with Magneton. These teams usually employed Deoxys-s to lay hazards while the rest of the team swept with the power of hazards. Eventual co-winner ShakeItUp reached number 1 with such a team, which can be found below.

Aside from heavy offense, the other most popular team was sun - because many of the available sun abusers are found in RU and UU, it was easy to begin stacking a team with the most popular. And as far as the NU selection went, these teams got access to Dugtrio, a Pokemon commonly found on many standard OU teams regardless! Sun teams were certainly a force to be reckoned with.

However, heavy offense and sun weren't the only viable teams available - other co-winner ToF topped the challenge completely (although at the time of his victory did not reach number 1) with his version of stall which employed use of many lesser used Pokemon. One of the most interesting things about this team was the lack of a Steel-type - Despite the weakness to Dragon-type attacks, ToF's team of heavy defense never found itself at a true disadvantage!

What I think this challenge showed all of us was that we all need to reevaluate which Pokemon are truly "good" in OU - as ToF and ShakeItUp proved by getting into top 5 on OU ladder, there are many Pokemon outside the box to consider using! The best way to keep learning about the metagame is to use these low tiered Pokemon and find out which sets truly hold a unique niche.

A few things about these:
1.) If you played in a challenge and you still have your team from a specific one, please PM me on IRC or if you must, the forums, and give me the pastebin to add
2.) I hope these are interesting to you, so you can see what is useful and what creative players thought of
3.) If you are wondering where the vgc scores are ... I lost them. I wrote the winners down so it worked out somewhat well, but i apologize in advance for that blunder.
4.) These will be updated after every challenge - Eventually, i hope to do things with them on site but i guess well have to see ^_^

#pokemon "No Arceus" Challenge!

Hey guys, I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving break! I'm back with a new challenge that will hopefully expand your thinking and get those creative juices flowing again! To increase the activity of Ubers and give a suitable challenge, the next #pokemon challenge will be a "NO ARCEUS" Challenge, held on the Smogon University Ubers ladder.

To join this challenge, PM me (kd24), Jibaku or bojangles on IRC or the Smogon forums (preferrably IRC!) with a new alt or nick that has never been used on the Ubers Ladder. Please try to keep it close to your forum or IRC nick if possible! The challenge will last until Sunday, December 18th at 8:00 PM EST - aim for the top!

The winners of this challenge will be the the following:
  • Anyone who reachers number 1 during the challenge
  • Whoever finishes the challenge ranked ahead of all other challengers

The winner of the challenge will receive short-term (and sometimes permanent based on your previous #pokemon activity) status (and in the case of hops, consideration for a promotion). You will also receive a slot in the illustrious Hall of Fame.

I'd like to thank all of you for the phenomenal activity of the last challenge and I hope we can keep it up. And let's find out how truly hard it is to build an Ubers team without Arceus.

and the next challenge will be a UU challenge! Get ready!

#Pokemon "No UU?" Challenge

Merry Christmas everyone! Unfortunately, JabbaTheGrinch has banned everyone's favorite Christmas Tree from UU but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the holidays. This challenge will be a UU challenge with the only condition being: No UU's! This is going to give us time to explore the UU metagame without Hail, while also allowing us to look at some cool RU mons for SPL and some cool NU mons in general.

I don't expect this challenge to be "easy" by any means, but when was the last time we had a real challenge!

To join, pm kd24, bojangles, jibaku, and sometimes bloo, either on IRC or the forums. Be warned, you'll want to wait for our confirmation first (I disconnect a lot so I might not receive your pm!). When you pm us, you'll just need to give us your alt that you plan on using (remember, this must be fresh alt).

The challenge will last until January 22th 2012. The winners of this challenge will be the the following:

  • Anyone who reachers number 1 during the challenge
  • Whoever finishes the challenge ranked ahead of all other challengers

The winner of the challenge will receive a bump in status (and in the case of hops, consideration for a promotion). You will also receive a slot in the #pokemon Hall of Fame.

Good luck everyone!

As it turns out, we will have tiering shifts soon! This won't affect the challenge too much (your ratings won't be reset) - what this does mean, however, is that any Pokemon RU or NU before the shift will still be legal after the shift. Every Pokemon dropped to RU/NU after the shift will also be legal. So really, this just increases your options :P

IMPORTANT: ALAKAZAM AND SABLEYE ARE BANNED. ALL OTHER BL2 ARE LEGAL! This is because Zam and Sableye's released DW abilities pretty much pushing them to sure UU (if not the top of UU). It kind of ruins the spirit of the challenge. If you have been using one of these, then please change your team (you are not forced to make a new alt or are disqualified, sorry for the confusion!

(Expect the write-up of the last analysis to be on site soon I've been busy with vacation plans lately)

Dual Weather Team OU Challenge

So it's been a while since these have been running, and since kd24 departed (recently to return to everyone's dismay), I am taking over these challenges. Both the previous Uber and UU challenges were not as popular, so we're gonna head back to everyone's favorite BW tier, OU!

Can multiple weathers co-exist on one team? In DPP, sometimes you got to see Tyranitar and Abomasnow on the same team, but can it work in BW? Since the auto-weather starters in OU are limited, just remember that you have to have two of Tyranitar / Hippowdon, Politoed, Ninetails, and Abomasnow on your team. Don't be cheesy and run Tyranitar AND Hippowdon on the same team and say you're running dual weather, I'll DQ you faster than Eo jacks it.

To join, pm ToF, bojangles, jibaku, and sometimes bloo, either on IRC or the forums. Be warned, you'll want to wait for our confirmation first. When you pm us, you'll just need to give us your alt that you plan on using (remember, this must be fresh alt). Once I add your name to the thread, feel free to start laddering on the BW OU ladder on Smogon University.

The challenge will last until April 04, 2012. The winners of this challenge will be the the following:

Anyone who reachers number 1 during the challenge (I'd prefer to see this if possible)
Whoever finishes the challenge ranked ahead of all other challengers

The winner of this challenge will receive temporary AOPs in the #pokemon IRC channel, with consideration for permanent status bumps if you continuously do well (this is how I got my ops guys, it works :D). You will also receive a slot in the #pokemon Hall of Fame.

Good luck everyone, and may kd24 never run these again you lazy fuck!

Congratulations to ShakeItUp for winning this edition of the #pokemon challenge. I hope you guys had fun with the theme, and many of you guys did very well. In addition to ShakeItUp's beastly performance, McMeghan and Iconic both also eclipsed the 1500 mark, but were too lazy to keep laddering to avoid decay (dumbos :P). I'll link to both ShakeItUp's and McMeghan's team below because Iconic refused to give me a copy of his team upon asking multiple times.

ShakeItUp: http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3464491

His RMT pretty much describes the role of every team member, but I thought it was interesting to couple Tyranitar and Abomasnow on the same team. Abomasnow's Hail was moreso a secondary effect, and he used it more as a wall-breaker against opposing stall teams. Many sets were unique on his team, including Agility Gliscor and Dragon Dance Tyranitar, both which are never seen on common teams today. Lastly, that Jirachi set was very popular in DPP, and ShakeItUp brought it back similar to Ojama's team with Excadrill that was also RMT'd in the past. Overall it was a very nice read, and a very creative team that I enjoyed watching you battle with on multiple occasions.

ShakeItUp: K so when this challenge was posted I hadn't played OU in a long time (couple months) since I was trying to get Tiering Contributor by playing RU (which I did). So I had to figure out if anything changed and what people used and just make a random dual weather team. So I made 3 teams, 2 of which were awful because they didn't fit my playstyle, and one of which was just a joke team with a Level 1 Endeavor Politoed + Ninetales. So, instead of trying to play with the weather, I just decided to use my normal style and slap on two weather pokes without caring about the weather they brought with them. I decided to use Tyranitar since it was the most versatile weather pokemon, and then slapped on an Abomasnow since I thought the Mixed set would be fun. I then just went with my normal playstyle with an entry hazards setter in Deoxys-D, and 3 other pokes that could take advantage of them. I didn't want to use a spinblocker so I used my Deoxys-D as a means to obliterate almost all of them (curse you Starmie). All in all, the challenge was fun since I got to relearn the metagame and use some cool Pokemon like Gliscor and Jirachi. I also got to own a lot of people with Mixed Abomasnow so that was fun too.

McMeghan: http://pastebin.com/9iEGasg7

While I didn't have the opportunity to watch McMeghan play in the challenge, one look at his team blew me away. He ran a pretty DPP-esque stall team without Spikes or Toxic Spikes, which I thought at first was crazy but ultimately worked out for him. McMeghan's two Choice Scarfers (Jirachi and Tyranitar) disposed of metagame threats quickly (DD Dragons, Gengar, Starmie, etc), while the rest of his team was extremely solid defensively to take hits from both the physical and special side (Gliscor and Blissey). Starmie provided spinning support, and took advantage of Politoed's instant rain to boost Scald's power. I was expecting to see a lot more Politoed / Tyranitar combos, and McMeghan was one of the few to use it successfully, so great work!

I'll have the next #pokemon challenge posted shortly. Note that it will involve the Dream World OU tier. Stay tuned!

No Dream World Abilities DW OU Challenge

Sorry for taking some time to get this next challenge up. A few people knew I was going to put this up, but unfortunately a lot of work and laziness on my part prevented me from getting it up as soon as the previous challenge concluded.

With the Dream World OU tier gaining popularity as per the recently released statistics, I thought it's fair to utilize the tier for this month's challenge. Dream World Abilities, in addition to being able to use certain banned Pokemon from Standard OU, are the main drawing points of the metagame. But will players be able to succeed and climb the ladder without using the Dream World Abilities of the tier's Pokemon? For example, Shadow Tag Chandelure, a central part of the tier, will be banned for this challenge. No Dream World Abilities, but all DW OU Pokemon are legal, so feel free to use your Genesect's and Keldeo's.

To join, pm ToF, bojangles, jibaku, and sometimes bloo, either on IRC or the forums. Be warned, you'll want to wait for our confirmation first. When you pm us, you'll just need to give us your alt that you plan on using (remember, this must be fresh alt). Sorry for the delay ToF ditched people, it's time to end the previous challenge !

ShakeItUp (once again) won the challenge, congratulations to him, he even wrote a RMT to show you guys what he used with success, be sure to read it when you have some time.

ShakeItUp: This challenge was great in that I won in a couple weeks despite never having played Dream World before. Knowing absolutely nothing, I just threw together a sand team with the always-broken Garchomp, a Deoxys-S, and my awesome Gliscor. After playing a few matches, I decided to play Omicron, who actually knows what he's doing in Dream World (back then anyway ;) /me runs). After getting demolished by his Offensive Life Orb Deoxys-S, I decided to use one, and then decided to modify my team by using some things like Genesect and Gastrodon. After that, I toyed around with the movesets until I built a team that could easily win the challenge, which it did; I changed Garchomp from Sub SD to Sub + Fire Blast, for example, in order to kill all of the Skarmory that switched into me. This challenge was fun in that I got to learn a new metagame that I had never played before, and ended up demolishing everyone :) Using innovative sets such as the all powerful Flame Charge Genesect was fun too (always wanted to own people with a Pokemon with Flame Charge). It was especially interesting because of this guy named Kidogo, who was my constant enemy in winning the challenge. In the end, I got #1 :) . So overall, fun challenge.
